Sorry.. mine took unusually long. Just under a week after the e-mail notification just to get the PDF's. That must be a good sign if the warehouse guys have that many to send out! Whoohoo!
Anyway, hope you get yours today.
Paint me a Mr Happy shade of yellow 'cause mine are finally shipping!
So now I have those sweet, sweet .pdfs to drool over until my hard copies arive in a week or two =D!!!SavageRobby |
I posted in the product thread, but when I saw this announced I had little interest, and almost temporarily canceled my Chronicles subscription to skip it. And I am really glad I didn't. This may be the best gaming book that I purchased this year. Its fantastic, and I'm going to get tremendous mileage out of it.
I hope they make more in this line. :)

I'll be using both this and the earlier Ecologies book in moving my game to Golarion.
Hrm, I don't think my players read these boards but just in case:
The PCs will be granted some minor boons by Desna as part of their journey between the worlds, which sets them up to be harassed at regular intervals by Lamashtu's agents (in which group I'll include Huzuraal), so was very pleasantly surprised to read during my commute to work this morning about the link between Lamashtu and barghests in the Goblins article.
It's like you guys keep planning stuff I want before I even know I want it! Keep it up ;)

;D
(I think I was thinking druid.)
Then you can use the substitution levels presented in PF#5 in the Lamashtu article.

The gnoll chapter is definatly my favorite, but what class are the shamans of Lamashtu?
I've even changed my background to the chapter's opening picture and might consider kidnapping someone to get a hyena skull avatar (if they were in Iowa)
This makes me a very happy northman indeed - have ordered Classic Monsters and am patiently waiting its arrival. Am currently converting the old TSR UK modules "The Sentinel" & "The Gauntlet" to Pathfinder, and gnolls are amongst the main bad guys in the latter.
(Hoping there's some nice takes on gnoll society and tactics...)

You know, I'd buy a book detailing ten monsters with depth and love like this one than a MM anytime. I'm no fan of the "monster of the day" approach though.
Excellent piece of work. I hope we'll be seeing a second Monsters Revisited soon, maybe with higher CR monsters this time, like giants, dragons and liches.

1) What ten monsters does it cover?
Bugbears, Gnolls, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Kobolds, Lizardfolk, Minotaurs, Ogres, Orcs and Trolls.
2)Does it have any crunch, like racial feats our sample classed monsters from each race?
Very little crunch. A few racial feats. Some variant races are described (but not stated out). The stats for each is straight out of the Monster Manual/SRD. Its a fluff book, how to make the old monsters feel new.

We will almost certainly be doing another book like this in the first quarter of 2009.
Given that the new book will focus exclusively on one "type" of monster, what type do you think we should do? What ten monsters of that type would you prefer to see?
We have some ideas of our own, but I'm interested to hear yours.

Aberrations did appeal a lot, but undead would be just as good. Give them some place in the world!
I agree, Aberations or Undead would be my suggestions.
Draconomicon would be nice.
Demons, Devils and Daemons would be another good idea, either as 3 seperate volumes or as an oversized CMR with all 3. (Although Daemons aren't really a CMR, they are the invention of Paizo, I think it would be a good companion volume to the Demons/Devils CMR).
There you go, next 4 (6) CMR's already set out. Now you guys just gotta write 'em! =)

Aberrations, please. They give me the willies.

In all seriousness?
I own Lords of Madness. No Aberrations.
I've already got the Libris Mortis. No Undead.
It's not like it's still hard to find the Fiendish Codices. No demons or devils.
There's been a Draconomicon every edition. They're DRAGONS, people. They like treasure, being the boss of you, and eating dire beavers.
What we *don't* have are good, solid books on Fey or Monstrous Humanoids.

I want you to breathe new life into the true monsters of myth and legend. We've seen books on undead. Aberrations are too weird and most of the good ones are closed content. Dragons are seriously played out. Give them a few years and then come back to them with new ideas. You just covered humanoids. Nobody has tackled Magical/Monstrous Beasts yet.
I propose the following ten "beasts of legend" need some scrutiny, a slight facelift, and some interesting tales to fit them into Golarion's own mythic landscape.
Chimera
Griffon
Manticore
Sphinx
Naga (yes I know it's technically an aberration)
Kraken
Cockatrice
Hydra
Phoenix
Basilisk

Hm. That's a really good idea.

FAE
- Dragons have already had a fairly comprehensive article, and a module concerning their ancestral graveyard. I'm not saying that a dragon compendium shouldn't ever be done, but that there's enough to tide GMs over for now. I appeal to getting the most bases covered before narrowing on one focus too tightly.
- Dragons serve a certain level range, whereas Fae could apply to a broad spectrum of different levels in terms of PC challenges
- There's a lot of unanswered questions and ways to explore the campaign setting by featuring the Fae. There's the First World. Sanos Woods. The really dire and terrible Fae, as described in the book found in Ironbriar's Office in PF#2
- It compliments Darkmoon Vale and some pre-existing modules, allowing people to stitch together their own sandbox campaigns that feature the Fae prominantly.

If I haven't made any compelling arguments for a book on the FAE, I do think that this is a pretty good second choice for me. Good job Eric.

My opinion in order of preference:
1. UNDEAD (I have a serious unnatural obsession for what you guys are doing with undead, I'd love to see what you can do with wights, liches, mummies, vampires, and so on)
2. Toss up between Aberrations and Fey.
3. Dragons (I've never been in a game where Dragons are "common" so I really haven't met a stereotypical Dragon, except for a quick slay)
4. Magical Beasts. (I'm sure what you guys can do with it would be great.)

Watcher, what specifically would you include in this book, ideally? I'm working on the assumption that this product line is about long-existing monsters that are in need of a fresh coat of paint.
I'd envision a Fey book that looks something like this:
1.) Group "shy, reclusive, temptress" sorts of fey into one "family." Keep the individual creatures separate but relate them somehow... Nymph, Dryad, Nereid, Sirine fit into this category.
2.) Satyr, cause you've gotta have something that was crerated to play havoc with the "shy, reclusive, temptress" fey.
3.) Trickster Fey, like Nixies, Pixies, Brownies, etc. would be the best place to go wild with the "amoral mischief" we've seen in Pathfinder Fey so far.
4.) Merge Merfolk/Tritons. The fey kingdom beneath the sea.
5.) Harpy, though a Monstous Humanoid, fits a fey theme pretty well.
6.) Hags, also fey in their outlook, perhaps designed specifically to do horrible things to those who would seek out the fey.
7.) Will-O-Wisp
8.) ...
9.) .....
10.) ..............
I can't figure where to go from here, especially from an "update the old" perspective. Sure we can create new fey as Paizo has done to date, but that seems to be a different kind of supplement. I'm interested in what you'd include in the book you're describing.
