For Karrin I don't really draw on too much for her character, her look is inspired by Hellboy, as are her religious beliefs to a certain extent, but the comparisons do pretty much stop there. Karrin acts a bit like a valley girl albeit with her own vernacular. She loves to ramble and talk and talk and talk (and stuff, she always says "and stuff" where ever it will fit) but she is also a master manipulator, often twisting people on instinct or subconsciously rather then design, but make no mistakes she's always playing everyone to some extent. She is very altruistic though, manipulating everyone for the common good is kind of her thing, but she's not above short turn gains. She is a bit like Colombo, making people assume she's stupid or inept, usually so they'll say something that they assume will be over her head or reveal something unintentionally because they don't feel threatened by her intellect. Sadly most people at the silver rose are onto her by now . . .

Also she loves competition, course Karrin is insanely intense, she'd drop kick her best friend if it meant winning a sack race, but thankfully that's only come up a couple of times :)

One of the other running jokes is Karrin is remarkably unobservant thanks to her low WIS score, this has caused her to use the slang "Burt" when everyone in the cage uses "Burk". Karrin also loves to pretend to misunderstand at times when it's convenient to her. Like the time she was disguised and pretended to have misheard Mr Swire's name as Mr Swill. People might not have picked up on it but this was Karrin's way of getting back at Swire after the business with Merle.

The other running gags are Karrin's disguises, her incredible appetite, and crazy deceptive strength. Karrin seems to think she's totally ripped while she is in fact just of average build and size.

Honestly the best thing about Karrin for me is her reactions to everyone else in the group. Karrin might be interesting in a vacuum but I love other people's reactions to her antics and there's nothing better then seeing her put in her place now and then. I love Merle and Nari's relationships, Karrin acts like an older sister to Nari, and is a good frienemy to Merle (although Karrin may or may not be aware of the effect she sometimes has on the catfolk.

Isaac is the potential love interest, if she can catch his eye, Justin is more of the snarky brother she never had, but sadly Karrin hasn't yet developed strong relationships with Ekuur and Rhiannon. I'm hopping that this upcoming side adventure will rectify this partly. I need more time with Rhiannon as well though.

It helps that I have started to read the series myself ;)

heheh, yeah.
I'd like to think that i'm making Justin mine, and not a (Bad) copy of the master's work. :) But it probably helps that you know where I was coming from! :)

And I'll admit, when you said Justin heard a scrabbling in the room, of all the things that ran through my head, I was NOT expecting the psychic rat swarm! ;P

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Hah! Hows THAT for a plot twist?!? ;P

Now if only our overrated fire slinger had more charisma than a wet mop,... ;)

Sorry, I got carried away.
I must have been watching an Indiana Jones re-run recently,... ;P

No worries. I am starting Book 2 of the dresden Series so we shall see how things converge. The Us is a monster worthy of Harry. I've wanted to us it/them for years! =D

FYI: book two of the series is probably the worst. I'd almost recommend skipping it.

Patrick I See you've posted In the Goblinswork thread have to say youre far more tolerant of those people than I am.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

@Kevin: I really want the game to succeed. I have faith in how Paizo works, and I hope they can keep the PvP issue down. If not, I will simply stop playing.

I gave it up as a lot cause after I saw how most the pvp crowd there acts towards none pvp'ers (Apparantly I'm a carebare, can't roleplay and a Goon.)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Oh yah. I'm in the same boat. I HATE PvP, but...I love Pathfinder. I love MMORPGs, and I'm willing to give them a chance. Perhaps if they have a tight moderating community and built-in anti-griefing safeguards it will keep the worst excesses down.

Like I said I am skeptical, but I am willing to give it a shot.

Hey, great minds think alike! ;P

I also detest PvP. (In general at least.)

While I do love Pathfinder, and playing video games, (I played (N)Everquest when it first came out) and was VERY excited when I first saw the announcement, I have pretty much come to the sad conclusion that even if I LOVE the game, and there was NO pvP, I still would never get to play the game enough to do ANYthing like what they are proposing with the whole castle/world building thing. There simply isn't enough hours in a day.
;P

Am I the only one who misses the 'old' style RPG games? You know, the ones you play by yourself, (Not online) work through from beginning to end? (Play again if you liked it!) And most importantly to ME, had a PAUSE button! :)
I still play Neverwinter Nights when I get a chance. (Not often, but hey.) ;)

I think I might have loved MMORPG's if given half a chance. But while I did play Everquest for a couple of years, it was a couple of years of BORING griinding, and while I did meet a few nice people online (Most Of whom I could never find a second time) most of my required grouping experiences were one miserable failure after another. ;P

Still, I wish them luck, and I have hopes that maybe they'll do a separate Non-PvP server one day! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I guess I am an optimist. While initially I was friggin horrified about the non-consensual PvP, I really want to play this game. I'm hoping the beta will give me a 'leg up' as the buy should keep the worst jerkoffs out (I hope). Still, I'm not sure what the final architecture will be. We shall see

But, there's always PbP! =D

Ah. I used to be an optimist, then I realized I am a REALIST.

The difference?

-Optimist= The glass is half full,

-Pessimist= The glass is half empty,

-Realist= "WHO drank my friggin' beer?!?"

:)

I also hold out hope. It's dim and fading, but still there. I will probably try the beta, or the 'week free tryout' or whatever they do if I can get in without spending money. Like you I was VERY happy when I read the first announcements. I would like to try it at least.

I have been pleasantly surprised before! It could happen again! :)

Dark Archive

Yeah more I read the threads of the pro PVP crowd (That from what I can tell Ryan wants in the game) the less interested I am. Also dosent help that things conciderd grieving in most games (Camping outside boss areas/dungeons to jump a weakend and exhausted party_ are being held up as features for this one.

Wow, yeah. I hadn't even read enough to know about that either.

And the more I hear, the less likely it seems I'll be joining.

Sorry, I still hold out hope, (and wish luck to those enjoy that kind of thing) but I'm pretty sure I won't be playing it.

Sad wizard is sad,... :(

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Well, to be honest it seems like they are pledging to keep an active moderator presence. Plus, there won't be 'boss mobs' per se, but I am worried about harvesting resources in the wilderness. I'll keep you guys updated in the beta and see if the mechanics work

No need to bother I already feel like I was taken for a bit of a Mug after the first kickstarter. (Pvp is my main problem but there are a lot and I mean a lot of things about this kickstarter I am not happy with.)

I'd appreciate occasional updates. I'm not gonna stress over it, but your opinion on how things are working I would be interested to hear. :)

I've just had bad experiences with griefing, and feel that RPG's (in general at least) are (or should be) about cooperation, not (personal) conflict. I get to fight the NPC's, why would I wanna fight you? Especially if I don't get a say in it. ;P

Ever notice how the pro pvp'ers are the ones who only ambush others who are half their level, or after a boss fight? Just sayin'. :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Oh yah, I understand both your opinions completely. I even mostly agree. The first KS I was so excited I pledged without doing my due diligence about what kind of parameters the game would have. I assumed PvE. Obviously I was way off

However, I hope if there is enough moderation and mechanical disadvantages for 'killing for the lulz' that the PvP greifers will marginalized. I like the closed beta. Hopefully those of us really unhappy with the non-consensual aspect can be an active part of some solution.

Dark Archive

This gentleman here highlights several of my other problems with the Second Kickstarter and why I wont be fuding it even if PVP werent an issue.

Noisy Rogue

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Well, there's no reason to pledge. I'm still kind of on the fence and I have a month to withdraw if I decide to. I just figured a limited-entry beta would allow a core community to set up. We shall see. I'm willing to give Paizo the benefit of a doubt. If I am wrong, well I'll be sure to tell you ;)

Dark Archive

Also apolagise for using your discusion thread to have this little vent but I dont feel I could have mentioned it on the PFO forums without causing a bit of a flamestorm.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Oh no worries. I've kinda backed out of the discussions myself because I've said what I need to. I don't want to play the troll the the true believers. I enjoy talking about these things, and honestly your input as a gamer who considers PvP a deal breaker is important feedback, whether the community wants to hear it or not

New blog about this subject is up

https://goblinworks.com/blog/

My first thought is that in trying to stop Griefing the sytem will end up simply making a new kind of reputation grieifing (Griefers trying to force you to waste reputation to get them back for killing you.)

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

Lisa Stevens is part owner of goblin works isn't she? Could be that they didn't get the money they wanted from investors, but then again traditional investors want a return on their investments, and the money that comes from a kickstarter campaign are theirs to keep. So I kind of see it as them milking their fan base for a higher return on their end. Personally if this campaign is even remotely successful I imagine there'll be a kickstarter campaign every year till launch. Another thing that irks me is that if you're willing to spend the big bucks, and I mean really spend the big bucks ($1000 or more) you're not getting a lifetime subscription to the game . . . which is what I'd expect. Seems even if you pay an unreasonable amount of money to kickstart a game you're still going to eventually have to pay subscription fees for premium content.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

No they've been upfront that the game has adequate funding. This mil was to push the date of release up. The timing of it is very poor IMO. There's a lot of other issues that need taking care of during the holidays. We shall see how things go. I do want to get in to the ground floor, if nothing else to see how well they keep their promises

Well keep your sharp monkey-eyes on it! :)

I think we all agree, we wish Paizo and the game in general the best of luck. I still hold out hope, and your idea of getting in early and keeping up with the joneses is a great strategy, especially if your able to stay involved time-wise and help mold the new system. Good luck!

I also apologize for the OOC thread derail, but I LIKE talking to you guys, and I hate trying to hold an intelligent conversation with a bunch of predisposed mental midgets. ;P

(I know, pot-kettle-black, but at least I'm honest about my predispositions!)
:D

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

No it's all good. I enjoy talking to you guys as well, and I get frustrated talking to the 'true believers' sometimes. At times it reminds me of when certain people were posting about how Paizo was killing D&D and we should just get over ourselves and support WotC since it was a foregone conclusion that 4e was going to beat the snot out of pathfinder.

I am going in, but I am going in very suspicious

Heh, But I LIKE being the underdog!
No one is surprised when the big-wig on campus wins the game.
When the underdog does it, EVERYone notices! :)

Go on in Monkey, we'll cover you! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Urgh. Yeah, I'm still committed, but the recent threads make me wonder if it's going to be worth it. I just love the semantic dance of 'Oh, we dont want to greif, we just want to play bandits, and quit being such a baby over it'. If you want to murder and steal as a fun exercise, at least have the freakin stones to admit the fact ...ugh

Double-ugh.
+1

My answer? If I actually got to play and build up a powerful PC?

Be the bandit hunter! :)

When the 40-something levels camp and jump newbies 30 levels lower, I'd be the 50-something level kicking their cans and looting THEIR corpses! Then ask them how much fun they think it is. :)

Sigh, if only it were that easy.

Hm,... we could all get together and form a group, and advertise that we are for hire as the bandit-hunters? If they can do it, why not us?
:D

<rubs hands together while chortling evilly>

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Well, there is a strong movement in the pro-PvP anti-greifing community to form such associations. Several have recruitment threads. I sincerely hope they will be able to. It also looks like the mechanics they have outlined (being able to put bounties on your killer's head, alignment shifts, evil/chaotic pcs not able to get best training) will make the 'gank' culture much less rewarding. I just worry about the perversity of greifers.

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

So it sounds like they're going to make greifing a challenge. Trouble is some people like challenges.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Exactly. That's the worry. But at least they are trying to restrict it through a combination of social/mechanic means. Will it stop all greifing? No. Will it make greifing a rare act? Well, only time will tell

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

They have also mentioned the possibility of a 'death curse' where you can use some of you character's reputation to curse your killer (under greifing circumstances). The cursed character would suffer some sorts of penalties until the curse wears off)

Dark Archive

Patrick Curtin wrote:

Yeah I see problems right out the gate with that such as 1. my character's reputation gets worse for the other guy being a murderous jerk and 2. it forming a new type of griefing where they ruin other characters reputation by having them repeateadly give out this death curse.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Well, yes, the devils in the details Kevin. Obviously they are all just discussion points for the moment. They don't want the death curses to be totally consequence free because that could encourage 'reverse greifing' where pcs could ninja loot or just make asses of themselves and use the death curse to punish anyone who kills them. Plus, I think there could only be one curse per person.

They are also discussing the concept of 'threaded' items. You can keep certain items from being looted. Also, there will be a sliding scale where a pc can use a high-level item, but it would take more 'threads' to lock it down. It sounds like an interesting way to allow low-level characters to carry puissant items, but make it risky because if you deck yourself like a Christmas tree you won't be able to protect everything if you are killed and looted.

At this point, I see no feasible way to play a bandit.

Then you're not looking hard enough.

I've said before that being a bandit is more than being a ganker. A big part of being a bandit is putting people in a place where you make them an offer they can't refuse.

Bandit: We will kill you, loot your husks, take all that valuable cargo that you're transporting, and wipe hours of hard work out in the next 30 seconds unless you give us a huge pile of Coin to leave you alone. I think you'll see that losing some coin to us is better than losing the huge value of coin if we torch you.

Bandit: We have scouted you with our harmless-seeming alts, tracked you with our harmless-seeming alts, and equipped our hidden, nearby lair with effective PvP gear with our harmless-seeming alts. Now when you're in the most vulnerable part of your journey, we switch to our PvP-equipped bandit alts and blitz you 3 or 4 to 1. We take your stuff, and vanish into the mists before your friends can arrive and help you. Later on we'll run our ill-gotten gains through a series of alts who are fences and get the money transferred to our Settlement coffers where we can use it to continue to advance our nefarious plans. Sure, our bandit alts are persona non-grata pretty much everywhere, but we are willing to accept that problem and engage in the huge logistics and coordination effort required to minimize it.

Bandit: We're at war with your Settlement. We're targeting everything you are shipping out of your Settlement, and we're declaring war against Settlements that are consistently delivering stuff to your Settlement. Anyone coming within a few hexes of where you live who is a war target is running in fear because of our effectiveness at taking out your logistics.

Bandit: Turns out, there's one class of folks we can gank without concern. Other bandits. When you take down a rich target, we're watching. When you manage to accumulate enough stuff to be worth our time and...

The bolded section pretty much nails the coffin shut for me Ryan has now up and said that a tactic that would be bannable and considerd griefing in most other games I know is now a completly valid tactic.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Ugh. I had not seen that post

Double-ugh. Seriously.

I thought the idea behind role playing games (at least the games I played in) was to be the HERO, or at least a good guy.

While there is a certain understandable fascination with the anti-hero, or even scoundrel, the basis of most all games is to be the hero who rises above adversity. NOT be the cause of it to some other poor player! ;P

Just my poor 2CP

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Well, there's no accounting for human perversity. Just as some people enjoy insulting others over the Internet, there will always be a core of douchebags that get their jollies from causing anger (the classic UMad Bro effect). Ruining others fun helps them feel better about their own pathetic lives. I don't understand it, but I recognize the impulse. Unfortunately there are a lot of emotionally-stunted people drawn to MMORPGs. I like online MMOs because I am a fan of RPGs and my life situation prevents me from participating in many outside activities, but I understand that there will always be a large contingent of sociopathic emotionally-stunted manboys playing, getting their revenge for whatever real-life issues and disappointments they have by being douches to others online

Blergh. I've almost talked myself out of contributing to the KS :P

Heheh,...

Oh, wait, you were serious,...

;)

Yeah, some people just get their jollies by;
'Doing unto others,... first'

I don't understand it, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to. I just participate in what I hope will be fun games and try to find others like-minded as myself to minimize the grief.

Hey, do any of YOU guys have NWN or even NWN2? We might could get out own game going. :)

Sorry so slow, just busy in RL.

Also, trying to go back and see what I neglected to update my sheet with regarding accrued wealth. I have the need to do some serious shopping and I honestly do not know if i have any GP to spend!
;P

Honestly, I have GOT to get better at doing quick updates to my PC profile with regards to Exp and GP/treasure type updates. It shouldn't take that long, but I ALWAYS seem to say "I'll get that later tonight at home when I have time" and then of course,... blah blah blah,...

This has been my one, consistent, (my) problematic issue with PbP games, I have GOT to get better! O_o

See you late Monday, Wife & I both taking the day off tomorrow for our annual 'Get the Christmas shopping done all at once, and enjoy a nice lunch together' day.

Sovereign Court

Things sure have died off in the game thread.

Tis the insane week before Christmas!

It happens. A lot.

At least to me. :)

Hopefully we'll all get to pick back up after the holiday.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I think it is a combination of the time of year and a certain lack of free time I am experiencing. I am currently stuck at an auto service shop, so I am going to see what I can do to jump start things.

Coming back to the PFO online thing I have to say I am not impresed with how Ryan and several others have been actng towards people bringing up concerns about the game such as this thread here
