Rheticus throws the thunderstone down the trap door and into the caverns under the graveyard, which hits the stairs about 20 ft away with a loud BANG Anju and Takaani need to make fort saves. Everyone can hear it loud and clear (even if your dice hate you).

Anju Fortitude Save

1d20+(5)=24

Tikaani Fortitude Save
1d20+(5)=7

Anju goes over to the stares and looks through the trap door angrily casting Gust Of Wind at what she thinks are grave robbers.

Trying to either startle them or make them lose their footing so they fall into the hole.

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

Arius jumps, his concentration on Liz and the doorway broken by the thunderous boom. He sees Anju rush toward the entrance.

"Wait, Anju!"

"We need to back her up. Creature, follow me!"

He pulls out his wand and follows Anju, the skeletal owlbear shambling a few steps behind and with Branahm or Keth in front, I hope.

I'd rather settle this without going into init and worrying about rounds if possible if you guys want to roleplay it out that's cool with me

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

All Cap is saying
Is give peace a chance! ;-)

I don't want to go into initiative either. Arius pulled out his wand as an logical precaution, but he's not going to use it once he sees that the new PCs look nothing like (a) undead or (b) the party's quarry.

Of course, now Arius has to explain why he's being followed by an owlbear skeleton. [Force Persuasion] "This is not the necromancer you are looking for." [/Force Persuasion]

Haha. Yeah, don't worry about init. I don't intend to fight them either, I cast a spell that does no real damage for roleplaying and hopefully some comic effect =p

With the loud report of the sphere still echoing in his ears, Hoskuld is surprised by the sudden blast of wind coming up from the shaft. With a startled shout he loses his balance and tumbles down the trapdoor. Cursing loudly about the ancestry of Chelaxians he struggles to his feet, clutching his bruised ribs. He glares around him at the figures rapidly approaching. Squinting in the dim light, he starts to reach for a weapon before suddenly realizing what he's seeing. Holding up a hand in a motion to halt, he calls back up the shaft. "Ho, Rheticus, I think ve have found them." Turning back to the others he says, "Easy now, ve are only looking for a group of citizens working for the city. I am seeking their services." He keeps his hand clear of his weapon, though he ensures that it will be in arms reach should they prove to be hostile.

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

Arius puts down his wand. "Easy, Anju. I think that this warrior is not an enemy."

"You have found us, ser. I am Arius Pelgane, a magician currently in service to the Guard. What do you want from us?"

Wondering what happened to the thread...the bookmark I have for my other PbP magically takes me to the latest page of the thread...not so this one.

"Did you HEAR that! Wow, those alchemists are amazing aren't they?
So are you the people Hoskuld is planning to kill...maybe I should rephrase that...or not say it at all.."
Rheticus gives his head a little shake and looks up:
"Rheticus Finn, accomplished finder of people, 100% success rate, at your service". He executes very ladylike curtsey and smiles warmly at you all.

go to a page other than the last, and right click on the link for the word "last" on the page count. this will make your bookmark default to the last page.

Seeing that a confrontation is not an immediate danger, Hoskuld stands up and dusts himself off. He explains that he has come from the Land of the Linnorm Kings and is seeking a man who had manipulated the mind of his queen. The man was a Chelaxian from Korvosa and when he fled he was returning to this city after a failed attempt to kill the queen. When Hoskuld arrived and began seeking answers, he learned about your party and how they had been working for the guard handling tricky situations. Hoskuld finishes his tales and says "So I am seeking your services, once you have dealt with your current task, to help find this man so that I might see justice done."

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3
Hoskuld Wulfson wrote:

"Although I cannot speak for us all, I would be willing to help you find this man if he is as wicked as he sounds. What is his name?"

Arius' interest in Hoskuld's story seems to make him forget his surroundings for a moment, but his player is expecting the thunderstone to attract some attention soon.

I never named him or fleshed him out too much just in case there is a bad guy in the module that could be suited to the role, Hoskuld would supply the name the man used, though it was likely an alias.

You will see him again, prolly not until the "cutscene" at the end of the second book of the AP though... OK - like I said earlier, I leave my house for Gencon in 24 hours, and will be gone until next Monday. I plan to have a laptop there to be able to update, but no guarantees. you have about one more round to talk before you see more 'friends' comming from the crawlspace Liz found. I'll update with that soon

I was wrong it wasn't the crawlspace...after one round..

2 short humaniods with ebony skin and white hair come running at you from the main entrance, screaming. One carries a hammer, while the other grabbed a short sword.

init? if someone feels up to running the battle and playing it, these are derro, if not I'll try to get online tonight or tomorrow

Initiative. (1d20+8=14)

Elizabeth pays little attention to the interaction between the newcomers down the stairs and the rest of the party (other than to throw herself against the wall momentarily when the Thunderstone went off).
She continues to stare down the crawlspace, debating whether or not to enter whe the screams of the Derro echo up from below.
This does grab her attention and she peers around the corner to see them attacking the others. She dismisses her Dancing Lights and stealthily moves up the stairs, Caress in hand and attempts to intercept them from behind.
Stealth Check. (1d20+9=28)

Keth sees the small humaoids and scowls at the newcomers, wondering what if they would be helping or hindering. He moved to intercept them placing his spear at the ready and shield up.

Initiative-1d20+2=21...sorry havent been around in a bit. good intentions and all, but life sometimes throws curve balls yanno. Work has been hectic.

"Wow, there's a lot going on here!"

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

Arius is slower to react to the threat than Rheticus.

Initiative:1d20+1=14

Arius will probably use his wand and order the skeleton to attack. We can roll initiative separately for the skeleton or have it act on Arius' turn, as you prefer.

Owlbear Skeleton's Initiative:
1d20=12

Still trying to figure out what's going on. Sorry.

Init 1d20+4=13

Male Human Fighter 3

Hoskuld has his back turned when the strange humanoids come streaming out of the darkness. He slowly turns, not anticipating the danger until it is right on top of him.
Seeing an enemy upon him, he snatches up his weapon, a long pole with handles protruding from it and a black cloth wrapped around the upper half. Tearing the cloth free reveals a four foot long blade lying parallel to the pole. He slams the bottom of the pole against the floor causing the blade to spring open and lock into place. Wielding his scythe, he prepares to attack the creatures.

Hoskuld had a 4 for his initiative, move action to ready his weapon and then going to ready vs approach.
If needed I can help run the battle

Just as Anju lowers her guard to the newcomers she hears the 2 creatures approaching.

Initiative
1d20+4 -> [13+4] = (17)

Tikaani is still overcoming his deafness from the blast. He looks around rather dazed and confused.

1d20+3 -> [5+3] = (8)

Male Human Rogue 3

"What's a dog doing down here?"

Rheticus points at Tikaani.

"Is it sick, or simple?"

Keth scowls and says "Thats Tikanni. Anju's Companion. Harm him, and I will harm you!" as he watches the two humanoids approach, ready to fight.

Male Human Rogue 3

oh, a polymorphed lover or some such! that makes some sense
Rheticus' eyes pop open wide:
"Have no fear, I'll do my part to ensure he is returned to his proper form! And, uh do keep me informed of what will and will not get me hurt...please?"

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

:-) Poor Anju--lost in an alien society without help for her polymorphed boyfriend. Arius will wipe away a tear of sympathy.

Cap seems busy, albeit understandably so. Keepiru, if you're still up for running the first rounds and know where the derro stats are (or want to pull suitable ones from the monster manual), I'd say roll initiative and go for it.

M DM

The first Derro races forward towards the cluster of people at the entranceway. It leaps up with sword in hand and tries to slice Anju's face, but misses by centimeters. The second creature stops close to the group and raises both hands upward. Shadows from the corners of the room seem to rush into it, then flow outward, snuffing out your lights and plunging the room into darkness.

Spoiler:

Liz successfully sneaks around into position behind the second Derro just before it used its Darkness ability. If you have Darkvision you can still see normally. When making your attacks remember to roll a 50% miss chance if your character cannot see.

Liz 28 - Stealth 28
Derro Init (1d20+6=22)
Keth 21
Anju 17
Arius 14

Derro 1 attack (1d20+4=9, 1d4=4)

Fascinated by these little creatures, Rheticus tries to recall some detail about them. 1d20+11=25 knowledge dungeoneering

As he ponders the Derro, Rheticus' hands fumble around on their own, pawing over his equipment and eventually pulling out a hand crossbow.

Whoops, sorry to be a pain, but Liz's Initiative was 14, her Stealth Check was 28. So she wouldn't get an attack before he cast the Darkness. She'll just accept the 50% miss chance on her attack.

Sneaking behind the creature, ready for a strike, everything suddenly goes black. She bites her tongue to keep from cursing and swings Caress in an arc before her, hoping that the creature didn't move from his last position.

Sneak Attack Derro with Caress. (1d20+6=24)
Confirm Critical. (1d20+6=20)
Damage, Critical Damage, Sneak Attack Damage. (1d4+1=2, 1d4=4, 1d6=6)
Drum Roll please... IC has been very generous giving me those rolls, and now lets see it be it's usual self and make me miss with the 50% chance...
50% Miss Chance. (1d100=91)

EDIT:And I just read that Sneak Attacks can't be used under cover of Darkness either, so there went that good roll anyway... :(

M DM

Heh, figures, butchered the init this time around b/c I was in a hurry that day.

Know. Dungeoneering DC13

Spoiler:

Derro are small, dwarf-like creatures with pale blue-white skin, bulging white eyes with no iris, and drooping mustaches. The derro are a degenerate breed of subterranean humanoids created by the crossbreeding of dwarves and humans. They are afflicted with a form of racial madness that drives them to inflict pain and torment on surface dwellers. Derro favor ambush attacks and prefer to disable their prey to torture them later.

You know that any direct exposure to sunlight is excruciatingly painful to them. A derro exposed to light for extended periods will eventually die.

They often coat their weapons with poisons that can incapacitate their prey.

They have some minor spell casting abilities, as you have seen already.

Liberty's Edge

Female Elf Druid

That roll that Tikaani made was his init btw. Sorry, I forgot to label it. Anju and the wolf are not effected by the Darkness spell I take it.

Basically these things are dwarves gone drow!

Anju will do a full attack on the closest derro with her staff.

Attack
1d20+5 -> [20+5] = (25)
1d20+5 -> [15+5] = (20)

Confirm Crit
1d20+5 -> [13+5] = (18)

Damage (with Crit)
1d6 -> [5] = [5x2] = (10)
1d6 -> [1] = (1)

Damage (no Crit)
1d6 -> [5] = (5)
1d6 -> [1] = (1)

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

Arius tries to take a step away from where the creatures were as he casts a spell of protection (Mage Armor, which raises his current AC from 8 to 12).

"Skeleton, attack the nearer humanoid that just charged us!"

No Knowledge: Dungeoneering for me, and I don't have Continual Flame available. I'm assuming that the humans are effectively blind, but please let me know if the light from the entrance provides any partial visibility. My skeletal minion has 60' darkvision from the undead type, so he only has to suffer the 20% miss chance.

The owlbear skeleton silently moves through the darkness to attack.

Claws:
1d20+9=21, 1d6+5=9, 1d20+9=22, 1d6+5=9

Bite:
1d20+4=16, 1d8+2=9

Miss chance for Darkness:
1d100=24, 1d100=76, 1d100=20
No joy from the bite, but the claws are okay.

No reach, unfortunately. If a full attack is impossible, it will make a single claw attack.

Male Human Fighter 3

Hoskuld curses the darkness and tries to tell whether or not the creatures have come near him. He witholds his attack until he is certain what he will hit.

Hoskuld Perception (1d20+5=19)

M DM

Hopefully the Cap will be back this week, I will be gone the next four days.

Derro1 - Dead
Anju: 6 points
Owlbear: 18 points

Derro2 - Wounded
Liz: 6 points

Anju turns and hacks at the creature blindly, but has the satisfaction of feeling the weapon strike flesh. A rattle of bones and the sound of rending flesh nearby tells you that the owlbear has joined in. The derro lets out a keening cry that quickly turns to a gurgle, then is silent. You hear the skeletal creature continue to rend and destroy the remains of the derro.
Liz raises Caress to strike a lethal blow the Derro in front of her just as the lights go out. It spoils her aim and her blade passes through the flesh along the ribs rather than piercing internals. She hears the creature hiss in surprise and pain at the blow.
Arius moves back next to Hoskuld and casts a spell to protect him while the northlander tests the darkness in front of him for enemies.
Rheticus draws his crossbow and listens intently to the darkness as he tries to tell friend from foe.

Still need Keth and Branahm actions. Keth, being a half-orc, can still see normally. Arius, the darkness spell is preventing the dim light from the area above the trapdoor from reaching the room. Unfortunately, yes, anyone without darkvision is blind. I'll say you can still pinpoint who is in what square with a DC12 perception check.

Actions forthcoming

Keepiru wrote:

I'm back, was going to post when I got home from work today, but you did my job for me... working on an updated map now if maptools will let me today (I've been fighting with it for 2 days) Thanks for picking up my slack during vacation

Keth Lunges at the remaining Derro through the darkness with his spear. he misses the creatures jugular by mere inches (nat 20 on first roll, only a 5 to confirm)

Male Human Rogue 3

"Their blades may be poisoned" shouts Rheticus. He pulls an 'everburning torch' from his gear and waves it around, as if his gestures might help to dispel the darkness. Finally, Rheticus wanders close enough to the Derro for his light to do the rest of the party some good.

"Do you think that skeleton would mind if I fastened my light inside its ribcage? He asks no-one in particular.

I think/hope this light(level 3) trumps Derro Darkness

"Perhaps I can shed some light on this mess."

I'll cast light.

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

Arius blinks at the sudden return of illumination. "Much better! Smite that thing, skeleton!"

He chants a brief incantation and gestures at the derro.

Daze, DC 15 if he's vulnerable.

The skeleton silently attacks.

Claws:
1d20+9=17, 1d6+5=6, 1d20+9=18, 1d6+5=8

Bite:
1d20+4=21, 1d8+2=6

Branahm Pelgane wrote:

As soon as Branahm sheds some light on the Derro, The owlbear and the wolf attack. The owlbear rips apart the first one, as the wolf grabs the second by the throat, shaking his head a few times until it no longer moves (crit on the bite), you see no other humanoids approaching.. so, you were deciding which way to go?

Male Human (mostly Chelaxian) Pathfinder Universalist Wizard 3

Arius points at the way from which the derro came. "Skeleton, guard that entrance, and attack any creatures approaching our group. Also, note that no living creatures in our group are acceptable targets for my future, generally directed commands to attack."

Arius addresses the newcomers. "To avoid additional interruptions, perhaps you could assist us in bringing the necromancer to justice."
