TACTICS

Spoiler:

Before Combat If Arius can’t think of a way to win without fighting, he’ll move away from the front lines and ready an enchantment spell to hit the toughest-looking fighter or rogue. If terrain permits, he may Grease a chokepoint in front of the fighters.
During Combat Arius will attack with Hand of the Apprentice, focusing on spellcasters; he will ready his attack to attempt to disrupt their concentration. Alternatively, he will use an enchantment spell on mentally vulnerable melee combatants. He avoids melee himself, but will take risks if necessary to help his companions, especially his brother Branahm.
Morale Arius will not flee while his companions are in danger unless he thinks that it is tactically necessary to help them.

APPEARANCE

At 25, Arius is fair-skinned with black hair prematurely turning white and very black eyes; he's moderately attractive, but too sharp-featured to be as handsome as his brother Branahm. His clothing is finely made, but has seen better days.

BACKGROUND

Spoiler:

Arius is the middle son of a prosperous, part-Varisian weaponsmith Trias Pelgane and his wife Ginevra, the younger daughter of a slowly decaying gentry family that had been demoted from the nobility during the Cousin's War. Partially out of family tradition, his mother encouraged his youthful interest in the arcane, and in due time he managed to enter the Academae, much to her delight.

Unfortunately, his apprentice career was cut short by his unscrupulous tutor Valin Ornelos, who used him as a guinea pig for a new potion designed to permanently enhance physical power. The potion produced an amazing temporary increase followed by a permanent drain and extended illness.

Valin had Arius expelled from the Academae to cover his tracks. (Arius suspects that the only reason that he did not "disappear" was Valin's desire to observe the long-term effects of his concoction.) Trias stormed down to complain to the school's masters, but suffered a fatal heart attack after he made his initial complaint. Arius' oldest brother Uther decided not to pursue the complaint against the school, an action which led to a lasting coldness between the brothers. His mother never recovered from the shock and died a year later. Arius still believes that his father was murdered by Valin to cover his tracks, and he has little love for the Academae or the Ornelos family as a result.

Arius finished his studies at the Theumanexus College with the help of a legacy from his mother, now long since spent. His bonded object, a platinum ring that he wears on the little finger of his left hand, is an heirloom from his mother.

Despite stormy relations with many members of his family, he retained a deep love for his youngest sibling Alika, a beautiful young woman in training as an acolyte of Sarenrae. Alika felt drawn to help the poor of Old Korvosa. That's where she disappeared: Her bodyguard ended up floating in the river, and the authorities believe that Alika was probably killed too. Arius refused to accept it. He and
his brother Branahm have worked hard to find out what happened to their sister, and they finally believe that they've found her abductor: a piece of human debris named Gaedren Lamm.
