Let's get all the Savage Races

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

We have Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome, and Human. That's good. But we should have Orc, Hobgoblin, Goblin, Kobold, and Drow on the next page.

It covers a lot of bases and has a simple "fanged" version of each of the basic races. I'm pretty sure that we could get playable versions out of all of those without resorting to Level Allowance or weak player options. And Pathfinder already has nice art of all of those races.

And this is really important: we would then have a race for each of the classes to show up with an Iconic version. I would love it for the Iconic Sorcerer to be a Kobold or the Iconic Fighter to be a Hobgoblin.

I'd like to toss the lizardman in the ring. For savage area campaigns, nothing says savage like a hissing lizard with a crude spear and a necklace made out of animal fangs.

Lizardfolk would be nice. However to do them properly, along with other similar favorites such as Gnolls, Bugbears, Kenku, Wererats, Pixies, and Doppelgangers we would need to institute a mandatory Paragon class of 2-4 levels that prospective players would have to take in order to play those races. Certainly doable, and it would definitely be a good idea to include that in the rules - but such races are definitely subject to more argument than the standard first level guys.

well, i really dont think you need to have 2-4 levels of paragon, thats basically the same thing as having a level adjustment. Id be happy to see a gnoll written up like the half-orc, with maybe the following changes:

weapon familiarity: Gnolls are proficient with battleaxes and throwing axes, and treat dwarven waraxes and ugrosh as martial weapons.

everything else written for the half orc would fit the gnoll IMO

Level Adjustments are totally screwed up, as are the CR computations for Non-Associated class Levels.

I'd like to see each race with a "Full Grown" version in a Monster Source Book, but then an accessory of "playable monsters" in which each starts as a CR1 juvenile and then levels as Frank suggests in a required racial paragon class into adulthood.

I would make two modifications:

The first is that I'd allow them to multi-class at some ratio, probably 1:1, with any other PC class. There's no reason an adolescent gnoll or giant can't be training as a Ranger or Sorcerer before adulthood. It's uncommon, but then so are PCs by definition.

The second is that I'd allow them to stop early, but somewhere at or after half-way, though perhaps only for "non-associated" classes. This was it's easier to build an adult-giant Sorcerer who's not as physically strong as his fellows because he's spent years developing his mystical powers rather than throwing boulders.

In other words, the Paragons should have a minimum level that must be achieved by any member of that race on a 1:1 advancement rate with any other multiclass, as well as a "full" development that equals their Level/CR as an "adult" as given in the source books.

Frankly, it might even be cool in this case to tag on an extra 50% of levels to the Paragon class for Advanced versions, in case the aforementioned Giant or whatever doesn't so much want to be a giantish Fighter when he;s grown but just an Uber-Giant and, as the "class" name implies, a Paragon-of-Gianthood.

FWIW,

Rez

Uh we sorta talked about this over in the New Races thread. Just thought you'd like to know. No more racial classes or ECLs. Don't water down my character.
I'm going back to sleeping with my eyes open now. Carry on.

Here's a suggestion that is a slight change in direction for me. I would like to suggest that, if it could be arranged, that we see some official manimal races as in taking various normal animals and adding the Green Ronin's Manimal template from Advanced Bestiary as a PC option. Paizo has used the template before in Carnival of Tears for one of the adversaries the PCs face in that module.

Really? That sounds cool. I'll have to check out the advanced bestiary. I was going to play an anthro horse in Curse of the Crimson throne because I'm odd like that.

The whole manimal name has to go though. Wasn't Manimal a 70's TV show?

Yes again! I'm thinking Dangerous Liasons with a little Three Musketeers meets The Black Stallion.

Woohoo, instant thread death.

Can't wait for Curse of the Crimson Throne. If Roman Polanski or Stanley Kubrick had filmed a Dumas book, one of my characters would probably be in it. Muhaha.
