Fast Track Experience as a 3.5 Conversion Pages 6 and 62

Alpha Release 1 General Discussion

One of players noticed that when using the Fast Track experience table as a conversion for 3.5, there gets to be a broader and broader discrepancy in the level up requirements, particularly after 7th level.

That is the fast track works okay until about 7th level, and then you hit some problems with players leveling at a slower pace.

The concern is in converting a 3.5 AP for playtesting.

Example: I'm starting a new Runelords campaign at first level with Alpha Rules. If this trend continues they might be way underleveled at some point in the future after Chapter Two.

Or am I missing something here?

Now, once all the monsters and encounters are recalibrated, this might fix itself.. I'm not done going through the conversion notes yet and I admit that I might be missing something.

Or.. this situation might require telling the players to level up at the point in which the AP says they should be at a particular level. If that's the best solution then I'm fine with it.

Spoiler:
Like telling them to level up to 6th Level when they go to Magnimar in Chapter Two

Any thoughts on this?

Did you put in all the Story Awards of XP?

No, I haven't factored that in yet, and that might be the missing factor.

We started the new campaign, played the first few scenes on Tuesday night.. Then I got home and then saw the new Alpha Rules. Since then we've agreed to convert the game over to playtest them... but we haven't met again to play. We've mostly just been discussing the conversion process over the phone and through e-mail.

To everybody: do you think the Story Awards would make up the spread between Fast Track and 3.5 after 7th level?

It should be noted that the fast track rules assume about 15 encounters per level as opposed to 13.3 for 3.5. This slight difference will play out over the length of a character.

There are a number of solutions here...

1. Add an extra encounter or two. Many GMs do this anyway as the PCs explore places that are "off the map" in a published adventure.

2. Reward Story Awards.

3. Use the old XP system.

All are viable.
