Thorn of Clovenwood |
The two guards are the halfling and the elf, right?
Thorn remains standing. “Well, what exactly we can do for you isn’t yet clear to me, but be sure we’re quite capable. What you can do for us … well, it’s a small thing really I would imagine, for one as connected as you must be. We’re looking for someone, a berk name of Enoch – though he may now go by another name – former proxy in The Cage to the recently deceased prince of demons. He has interests in this place, and we believe he came here, possibly by the same Door we did, probably a few days back. We’re trying to find him, or at the least what he is doing here. If you’re able to help us in that, I’m sure we could see clear to doing you a favour in kind.”
the Gray Scribe |
"Hmmm ... quite a bit of interesting things here." Gray will try to stay close to Swire and Reghar, but he's also extremely interested to peruse the books and scrolls that may be available. He especially tries to find out if anyone has a scroll of comprehend languages for purchase.

In a small scroll rack on a table cluttered with potions of dubious origin, half-used wands and jars of spell components you find the scroll you're looking for. Inquiring with the merchant in charge (a halfling in a fez) the cost is a mere 25 gold coins.
Mr Swire |
While he's here, Swire inspects the lock picks and such, looking for any that are better than the ones he has.
Thieves Tools, hoping for masterwork. If I need to roll something, would you mind rolling it? I don't want it influencing my choice to buy, and I'm not having much luck on IC lately.

If the halfling allows him to do a quick inspection, Gray will review it, and if it is what the merchant says it is, he'll hand over the gold coins. He's not much of a haggler.

"Watchin' you, berk.", he says," Keep it in-n-out and everything's Mr. Tinker."
Not quite knowing what 'everything's Mr. Tinker' means, you use a quick incantation to read the scroll. It is, indeed, a minor spell for the comprehension of languages. The halfling takes your money gladly and tries to interest you in some of his spell components.
Mr. Swire browses for a bit, picking out a burly man standing next to a door studded with keyholes and latches of all descriptions. Arranged before him are the tools of the locksmith and trapspringer's trade: probes, picks, pliers and small hammers. Some of them are of very fine quality.
For a moment, you think the merchant is calling you by name, but you quickly realize your mistake.
"Give my picks a try, Squire, an' you won't be disappointed. 125 ladies for a set fine enough to crack the Arch-Lector's palace itself."

Marvent slumps down in his chair with a frown. The halfling and the elf tense up where they're standing, like they just discovered the family dog is rabid.
"Not exactly what I expected to hear, sir.", he growls,"Well, what can you do, then, if you're so capable? I've got leg-breakers aplenty and I've got enough personal power to handle things for myself when the situation demands. I don't like vague language, so spit it out. Then maybe we can discuss your rogue Proxy."
He snaps a long-nailed finger and the elf hops to attention.
"Shut the door.", he orders. The gold eyed elf quietly shuts the door, one hand on the rapier at his hip.
"And I was told that there were six of you. Where are the others?"
Thorn of Clovenwood |
“Ha!” Thorn steps forward a pace, face twisted in a mirthless smile. His hand also rests near the hilt of his sword “If you’re so un-fond of vague language, spit it out. What do you want of us green man? I’ve told you what we want, and that we’re willing to try to help you; seems pretty clear from my end. What do you want?” His voice is a snarl by the end. Intimidate: 16+10 = 26
“As for the others, they’re not at my beck and call. I’m sure a resourceful and personally powerful cutter such as yourself should have no problem tracking them down.”
Warden of Doors |
The cronies look from their boss to Thorn and back, hands on their own weapons. Marvent stares at the bariaur for a second and quirks his mouth into a smile. As he rises, you can see that his eyes are full of hate.
"Very well.", he says,"Forgive me."
"I was under the impression that you had something specific for me, information or goods or the like. Now I understand that the situation is reversed, I have something for you. Not what I expected. Well, I can't say that I have anything specific in mind... but since you're willing to throw your weight around..."
He cranes his neck to stare Thorn full in the face.
"Kurth hasn't gotten around the knocking sense into a gang of punks in the Residential District. You're going to find Pox and his boys and explain with your winning personality that they're going to quite peddling their second-rate trash and start selling my goods. Do that and I'll tell you what I know about your Proxy. Now get out."
Mr Swire |
Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the thieves guild...
"Well, might as well test them. Mind if I test these locks out with mine first? Have to make sure that yours are actually better."
He then takes out a pick and begins working on one of the locks.
Sense Motive, does he seem to believe his tools are better. 8

The salesman is the picture of confidence, certain in the quality of his wares. You take a few for a test spin with the locks in the door in the stall. They're fine tools, sturdy and precise.
Thorn: All you've heard about him is that he's a powerful mage and a megalomaniac. Former adventurer from the Prime. That's about it without a diplomacy check to gather info or a knowledge: local.
Mr Swire |
"Well, my good merchant, you have sold me. Just remember, if these break next time I use them, I will come back for a refund, and you will give me one whether you want to or not. Have a good day.", he says with a cold smile as he sets down 125 gold on the table and takes the tools.
Thorn of Clovenwood |
“I think that’s our cue.” Thorn gives Rennet and Olli a glance, smiles unpleasantly at Marvent, then turns to leave, watching the mage, halfling and elf carefully out of the corners of his eyes for signs of treachery.
Assuming he is allowed to leave, he does so, emerging back out onto the street and moving a little distance away from the inn.
“Well. That was … interesting. What do you two think? Do we bother with this Pox berk or just try to find out ‘bout Enoch by our own selves?”

O.L.L.I bleeps
"Perhaps dealing with this 'Pox' being will allow us to access inside information about Enoch. The gang leader Green Marvent would be a logical repository of information on Enoch. This unit would postulate that there is a 78.883% chance he has valuable darks about Demogorgon's former proxy. "
Thorn of Clovenwood |
Thorn rolls his eyes. “Maybe. Still … we’ve got a few hours methinks until we’re due to meet back with the others. Maybe they’ve had better luck than us … I’d rather be out of here before this Festival tomorrow if possible. What with the expected riot and all. Still, maybe we’ll be lucky and the Green Rags and the Hounds will all kill each other off. In the meantime, let’s try to find out about this Pox creature eh? Just in case …”
Diplomacy: 10+4 = 14 to Gather Information about Pox. Maybe I can get an assist from Olli? Trying to find out his whereabouts (a bit more specific than district) and how tough he is, what sort of a gang he runs.
