You all come to Archive in Absalom Lodge. The entire Pathfinder Society is abuzz over the recent disappearance of Scrollmaster Effeflinn Whyst into a mysterious portal following her singing a strange song. Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine almost immediately entered the portal behind her.

Gorm Greathammer stands near a strange shimmering portal. Several Swordmasters stand guard, ensuring no one enters by accident. Gorm nods approvingly at the assembled Pathfinder agents. "Wonderful. I’m so glad you were all available on such short notice. I’m not sure I’ve seen such an accomplished group of agents together before. I’m sure you’ve heard the rumors already about today’s events, and you may even know more than I do. Here’s what I’ve been able to piece together so far. Effeflinn Whyst, one of the Scrollmasters, the elf who’s always singing strange old songs, she found something in the Grand Archive that took her by surprise. A hand-written journal of some kind. She ran off with the journal in hand, started singing, and made…this."

He gestures toward the portal. "That’s odd enough, but then perhaps twenty minutes later, after word started to spread around the Lodge, our Master of Scrolls, Kreighton Shaine, ran into the portal after her, looking furious. We haven’t seen either of them since."

He shuffles through some parchments. "We’ve done some divinations, and about all that we know is that it connects to the Darklands. Probably Orv, but some portion we’ve never heard of before." He sighs. "Frankly, we have no idea what’s going on. We could just wait for Effeflinn and Kreighton to return, but I don’t like the idea of what might come out of this portal in the meantime. I’d like you to go through, find them both, and figure out what the heck is going on. Hopefully, there’ll at least be a good story in it for you. I remember once, when I was in Osirion—" Gorm’s words are cut off when Kreighton Shaine’s head suddenly pops through the portal and looks at the gathered agents.

"Good, you’ve got them. The song is finished, but now it’s lost. We’ve got to find them. Hurry!" As quickly as Kreighton’s head appears, it vanishes once again. Gorm stares at the portal, speechless for a moment.

"Well, I suppose you should get moving, then. You should take a few minutes to go buy any supplies you think you’ll need. We’re not sure how stable it is, so you should avoid going back and forth through the portal until you’re ready to come back for good. Without disturbances, we think it should stay open for at least a couple of days. Why don’t you try to be back in 48 hours? I wouldn’t stay much longer than that, but do spend enough time there to see anything interesting. We’re looking at something very strange here, Pathfinders. Good luck."

You head to Grand Archive and are meet with the above, please introduce your PC's, and ask questions state what you want to buy. I will chase the druid who is missing form the campaign, and we can get going

A stocky young man of mixed heritage and average height approaches the portal. He is bedecked in full-plate armor, has a bastard sword at his side, and a pack on his back. He has chiseled handsome features with unkempt short brown hair.

When Gorm begins Leo strains to reach and grab a parchment and quill on the side of his pack. He finally succeeds just in time to take notes.

He takes a step back in surprise at the emergence of Kreighton's head.

Leo regains composure quickly and nods to Gorm, his faction leader, "48 hours. Got it. Master Greathammer, if the portal goes down, where should we head to get back?"

"Has anyone ever asked Effeflinn Whyst about the songs she sings? Are they Elven?" Quinoline, a bespectacled Thuvian alchemist, asks.

She introduces herself to Leo, and nods at Astrid, flinching when Astrid reaches forward to punch her in the arm.

I've seen you face down a giant bear with nary a complaint before so don't try to tell me you're afraid of a tiny punch to the arm. Anyway it'll be good to have a fellow shield maiden in on this business." She jerks a thumb to indicate Leo. "At least you won't be whining like buttercup over there about needing 'air' to cast your spells." She makes finger quotes as she speaks.

Her eyes have a mischievous glint as she turns to the wizard. "Ha! Just kidding Leo. Those healing spells of yours sure came in handy up Urgir way. Anything that helps your allies and harms your foes is alight in my lexicon." She gives the wizard a similar punch in the arm.

"So Gorm, I can't say I've met Effeflinn. What do we know about her? You say her songs are old. Just how old are we talking about?"

The shield maiden taps a finger on her chin as she considers other questions. "Darklands and Orv you say? Can't say as I've ever been there. Underground right? What should we expect there? Do we know anything about the journal that she took? It wasn't Shaine's diary was it? We certainly don't want any of his ramblings going public."

Gorm clears his throat at Leos question and he shifts uneasy

"Well, we don't know much about this portal, if it closes you would have to figure it out. That is why we send the best and brightest that we have in the Society."

Quinoline wrote:

A huge and scary warrior rides in here right on a big red drake. The rider is a humanoid, but not quite human. His hands and neck partially covered with red scales and there are many short horns on his head. But the most remarkable part is four red spider legs growing from his back. He looks powerful and ferocious enough, although the most observant of you may notice surprisingly intelligent and attentive eyes that betray that a very decent mind is hiding under the appearance of the hulk. Drake, the size of a large horse, greedily sniffs the air and seems about to issue a war roar when the rider slightly pulls back the reins and the wyrm obeys and quiets down. Rider has a bastardsword in a scabbard on the back and a silver sacred symbol of Nocticula as a medallion on his chest.

Name's Kagan. This name maybe tells you something... It seems that this is the guy Zarta once left in the old Dark Archive in order for him to monitor the return of all secret and dangerous tomes and grimoires by agents, which they take and then often forget to return. Since Kagan took office, the percentage of returns has increased significantly. No wonder he's here now.

Quinoline's heart skips a beat when she sees Kagan. She has an overdue library book. But then she realizes that it wasn't the Dark Archives one, it was the regular Grand Archives one. She roots around in her bag of holding to see if she brought it with her so she can finish in Downtime.

"Oh. Hi," is all she can outwardly muster, all her thoughts unvocalized.

Leo and Astrid recall that the Darklands are an interconnected network of caverns and passageways deep underground, spanning multiple continents. Residents include xulgaths, deep gnomes, derros, duergar, and calignis, as well as strange and powerful aberrations. While Quinoline also knows that that Orv is the bottom level of the Darklands, comprised of many distinct, enormous caverns called vaults. Each vault tends to have its own ecosystem.

After small brainstorming you head to the library, Kagan is leading you there with his drake happily swagging its tail. In the library you spot an old hag, and you see a comotion, some agents seeing Kagan run to hide behind the regals. And you quickly spot that Quinoline joins them. After Kagans conversation with the hag she points you where the elf was researching before leaving.

"That part of the library includes firsthand accounts from people who interacted with deities when they were mortals." says Hag named Jagoda.

When you take a look through the papers you quickly find a reference to Nivi. That specific section of the library has personal accounts of dealings with Nivi Rhombodazzle. Nivi Rhombodazzle is the god of gems, stealth, and gambling. She spent much time in the Darklands avoiding her creditors and is known as the first deep gnome. She approves of using stealth and guile over violence where possible.

After you gathered what was needed you enter the portal, you catch glimpses of a song being sung, but then the song come to an end and you show up in a underground cavern completely black.

Please describe your light situation, I see a lot of humans in the party which natuarally do not get darkvision. This is the time to finish your daily preparations

You feel that beyond your group there is also someone else.

Kreighton Shaine addresses the newly arrived Pathfinder agents without turning to look at them. "You’ve come at last. We must find Effeflinn at once. I’ve forgotten the song; I’ve forgotten the song. It doesn’t matter, we need to find all of them! After all these years!"

When Kreighton sees your blank stares, he calms slightly as he slips into the role of a teacher. "It was so many years ago. Almost a century. Effeflinn Whyst and I, we were on a mission to reach the part of the Darklands where Nivi Rhombodazzle once lived. When she was mortal, she hid in the Darklands for many years to avoid her creditors. She didn’t always win her games, after all. She magically sealed it away to prevent being found. We had a song that should have opened a portal to reach this cavern. It worked, briefly. Part of our team made it through, but then the portal suddenly closed! Nothing we tried could open it again. The rest of the team was lost. I know that Effeflinn did something wrong. She was the song expert; she was supposed to know how to do it right! She must have found the rest of the song, to open the portal again. The strangest thing is that I can’t remember any of the song now, after it haunted me for all these years. It doesn’t matter. We’ve got to find the rest of the team. They might still be alive!"

Kreighton describes the team with who he was traveling:
Kreighton Shaine (CG male elf scholar), expert on rituals, that's him ;)
• Effeflinn Whyst (CG female elf poet), expert on songs
• Irlah Kestiwhitt (CG female gnome cleric), Nivi Rhombodazzle lore expert
• Piltineff Gosk (NG male gnome fighter), physical protection
• Eltha Embercall (N female dwarf druid), expert on survival

You see (I hope) a trail left by Effeflinn that you could try to follow

To follow the tracks one of you would have to pick Track exploration activity and roll Survival check DC24 (trained at least)

After Kreighton finishes, Leo raises a gauntleted hand. The gauntlet, while mostly matching the rest of the armor, is tinted white and has golden runes emblazoned in rows along the backside. "Master Shaine, we'll find them!" he declared confidently.

With that, and a decent amount of armor clinking, Leo begins looking around intently. Every so often he can be heard whispering "vide"

Greetings, Astrid. That sounds... impressive. And I am Kagan. His voice low and hoarse. Perhaps there is a slight irony hidden deep there in the answer, as if Kagan does not need to explain how good he is, but it is extremely difficult to assert this - he does not behave defiantly. When he communicates with you, his red spiderpaws move slightly behind his back. And yet, he is surprisingly polite for all his monstrous.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to meet God, Leo. We will still have time to do this in due course.

Creighton, how many more secrets do you have, old man?

Both Kagan and his drake have darkvision. Btw, Kagan also has motion sense in 30ft (he feels the space around with vibrissae on his spiderpaws)

Kagan looks around while his riding lizard also moves its muzzle from side to side. The tiefling then puts on a red helmet in the shape of a red dragon spreading its wings. I'm ready. Do you want me to follow track, or will someone else do it? I'm not the best tracker, but I can still take on this role. (+15)

You follow the trail with Leo taking the lead. You frequently spot Kreighton disappearing and reappearing down side tunnels as you make your way through the strange Darklands, but he doesn’t report anything of note.

While traveling, you might notice that this part of the Darklands seems strange. You notice that many of the rock structures have streaks of vibrant hues. Stalactites and stalagmites nearly meet each other, but then grow in spiral patterns around each other. Drops of liquid that condensed on the ceilings above fall on Kagans's heads. Occasional breezes carry scents of metal and blood.

As that happens Leo spots a makr of some odd creature, and you hear them nearby.

Leo knows that those are Isqulugs, but he can't recall much beyond what they are. Since it is closer you can clearly see that the isqulug's appearance, though unsettling, might be its least awful aspect. The creature resembles a bipedal amphibian with tentacles instead of arms and a head composed of an undulant mass of what appear to be shifting, slimy transparent eggs filled with writhing larvae. In truth, these larvae constitute the mind and consciousness of the isqulug—its “body” is little more than an organic suit manufactured from the flesh of those it has consumed, analogous to the complex web of a spider or the hive of a colony of bees, but fully capable of movement and violence.

Quinoline knows that they are evil and violent, she also knows that they have regenerating ability that is deactivated by cold, cold is also its weakness.

I will do RK's and let Leo and Quin to decide on their 2 actions before resolving.

Quinoline will not raise her shield, then. She'll draw a moderate frost vial from her bandolier (she crafted 4 many levels ago) and throw it.

She only has a +20 modifier with moderate vials so that's (14)+20=34 to hit, and (2,5)=7 cold damage and 8 splash cold.

Quinoline's splash is limited to the target, by the way (bomber alchemist).

Leo steps closer and raises shield. While Quinoline reaches for her cold bomb and tosses it at the creature, the bomb hits the creature in the head and splashes it with cold. The creature shrieks in pain, and you see it making bigger difference than it would seam Weakness to cold Red -25

Astrid tries to blast the creature with cold, but she barely misses, then she tries to smash it but her shield bounces of the thick skin of this monstrosity.

The other two creature moves closer.

Kagan emits a guttural roar, which feels like a huge, terrible threat! Flames begin to dance on his blade, and red scales appear on certain areas of his skin (neck, forearms, hands). After hearing this, Kagan's tame drake rushes into battle, but at the same time, like a snake, cunningly going out to the nearest enemy behind its back. The barbarian furiously slashes at strange monster twice, and each blow is accompanied by the exhalation of the flame of his dragon-blooded ally.
