Paizo - Can you match Amazon's price for the 4e Core Books?

4th Edition

Before I go and place my pre-order on Amazon, I was wondering if Paizo will be able to match their price on the 4e Core Books (including my newly announced 15% subscription discount). Here is what Amazon is offering:

Amazon wrote:

4th Edition Core Rulebook Collection (D&D Core Rulebook) [BOX SET] (Hardcover)

$66.12 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. Details

I'd rather give my money to you than to them, but that's a pretty low price...

This seems like such a strange request. Most small shops can't match Amazon discounts, they would go under quickly. The reason for buying from a smaller vendor usually have a lot less to do with price.

*shrug* I like Paizo, I want to give them my money, and I will do so if the margin is fairly close. And if they can match Amazon, or come close, I'd like to shout it from the rooftops so that I can direct the other gamers in my group to buy from Paizo rather than Amazon.

They could match it, but you'd have to wash dishes for a week at their corporate headquarters.

Deal.

Maybe they could sell them at cost to anyone who prepays for a year's subscription to a 4E Pathfinder???

The 15% off I get for being a Pathfinder Subscriber is incentive enough for me to remove the Gamesmastery materials from my Amazon Wishlist and add them to my Paizo Shopping Cart... but not incentive enough to buy 4th edition materials from them.

Paizo would have to, somehow, make 4th edition look and feel like "classic D&D" in order for me to buy the core books (at least round 1 of the core books) from them at a 15% discount.

You mean fill the pages with confusing and often contradictory rules, pencil drawings by an eleven-year old, and comics that aren't even funny to drug abusers coming out of a coma? Ah, the nostalgia!

Yes!

What nobody has mentioned yet is how we're aiming for more of that classic 1e feel in Guide to Darkmoon Vale by having me do all the interior artwork (all black and white, of course). It veers just a little bit from that true nostalgia feel, though, in that my drawing style has a strong anime influence. On the plus side, though, it's not very good, so it should look pretty comparable to those pieces you mention.

No serious response? If this is just plain old impossible, just say so.

That's what you get for tricking everybody with that other thread.

I laugh at your misery.

An interesting observation on the subject of Amazon: I order from China, and when I get stuff from Amazon it comes in about 10-14 days and usually arrives in a box inside a bag and has hardly been scuffed, sometimes it's even virgin fresh. When I order from Paizo it looks like each of a dozen mail handlers has had a crack at punting it through some uprights, and it takes a week longer.

Now obviously this is not Paizo's fault, but it does indicate that Amazon has got pipelines open that circumvent the usually mail goonery, and they are significantly cheaper. This is just evidence of the awesome majesty of Amazon. So sadly, as much as I want to support Paizo I just can't afford to order this kind of stuff (4E books) from them AND I can't bear to have it (possibly) beaten to a pulp. Life ain't fair.

The people who would be able to answer your question are out of the office today.

I was 10 when I got the AD&D books with those cartoons in them, and they warped my sense of humor for life.

If you ever draw an anime-style Froghemoth, let me know. I'll definitely want a framed copy.

Oh, now that was funny.

I imagine there is a fair amount of brainstorming going on right now. Give it a week.

Joking and kidding aside ...

Like Sebastian, I've held off ordering the new Core Books from Amazon, and would much rather get them from Lisa.

Price needn't be the same ... just in the general ballpark.

Like Sebastian, I'd prefer to support Paizo.

Same-same here in South Korea.

We are talking about offering some kind of package deal for the 4E books but we're not ready to commit just yet. Stay tuned.

I would encourage you to pause and take a very, very, very serious look at what you just agreed to do.

There are things ... things so horrid, so vile, so putrid and evil, living in our sink ... you think the unedited Nick Logue adventure was bad ... we edit the sink daily.

And by "edit" I mean "set it on fire."

That explains a certain post from James Jacobs. So, did he ever identify the sink infestation?

When I lived in Seoul, I couldn't get anything shipped to me because no one could find my address. If you ask ten koreans how to get to the building down the street from you, you'll get 8 different answers including at least one "you can't get there from here."

And this is why I'm a loyal customer!!! Nice reference to the AD&D DMG (though it's a +2 back-scratcher). ;)

Damnit. Always read the fine print. I should really know that...

Thanks for the response Josh - I'll keep my credit card in my pocket and await further instruction.

It was that way when I was here 8 years ago, but now it's a lot better. There's WiFi and GPS nodes on virtually every street corner, every car has a GPS system (they come standard over here), and there are these really cool touchscreen terminals in the subway stations that are in Korean and English; they will give you a detailed map taking you from the map terminal to the input destination, giving both topside directions, and undergound (which Line to board), plus you can download the info to your cell phone (if you have a Samsung or LG smartphone) with the touch of a button on the terminal screen! I never get lost now! (another cool feature with my Samsung phone: I use SmartPass, a monthly underground subscription that keeps me from having to stand in line at ticket kiosks. The best part? As long as I have my phone on me, I walk right through the turnstile!

As far as mail goes, it took two months for me to receive a letter from my sister because she wrote the address in English...My wife speaks Korean, so I have an advantage there for international and Korean deliveries; but I now use my Army APO address for all mail incoming from the UK and US. I'm not sure if Amazon would ship to a Korean street address anyway.

China is the same. We've gotta go get a mailbox at the post office.

I'd quickly drop my Amazon preorder of 4E core books if all Paizo offered was a free 4E adventure (created by Paizo) with them.

Considering that they haven't received the 4E GSL/OGL or seen the rules yet and that they wouldn't be allowed to publish an adventure before August or early 2009(depending on if they pay $5000 for the right to publish early), it not only is improbable that that would happen, it is impossible.

If I buy 4th ed books, I'll buy them from Paizo.*

*At this point, with my gaming group lined up to finish ROTL and then start Crimson Throne, plus numerous GM Modules that we want to play... unless 4th edition is the best ever, I'm not in a huge hurry to convert in 2008, or even 2009. But if/when Paizo 4th ed products start coming in from my subscriptions, I'll pick up the books. Or maybe earlier is something else dazzles me, but I'm not in a hurry to be an early adopter for the sake of change unless there is a cool 4th ed setting or adventure path to run. (I'd accept a kick-ass Eberron update, but I'm wary after the Realms being nuked)

good call. Been stocking up on eberron 3.5 supplies from amazon. half of them are under a dollar used plus 3.99 shipping. Never thought I'd see the day when a book purchase had the shipping at twice the purchase price.

If GMM's were an option instead of Pathfinder I would be on board. Otherwise, I'm already pre-ordered on Amazon and will stay that way.

Does anyone know what the wholesale price is, and ow much it varies by volume purchase? Just curious.
