"Over the last five or ten years, I've noticed a particular term rise to ascendancy amongst video game critics that's used to describe what you do in games. That term is "gameplay loop," and I don't like this term. Maybe this is because in my formative game-playing years, I cared little for "loops" and nor did anyone else, and so I never understood why, years later, we all needed to see games through loop-shaped lenses to better understand what you do in them, when you can already understand what you do in them by just... doing it.
Or, maybe it's because terms like "gameplay loop" remind me of my time in university, where I spent several years being taught to wield certain academically-approved terms to describe normal things in abnormal ways in order to gain greater grades and an over-inflated sense of self-importance that stemmed, not from anything of actual substance, but instead from the fact that we used words that other people don't."
