I find myself to be a grognard now as well. While I have only ever played 3.x I am certain I will still be playing 3.x in 10 years. Now this all depends on if 4E does suck as much as I feel it is going to. We could all be surprised. Just saying......and hoping.......
Git outta here with all that optimism! You call yourself a grognard!?!? Now drop an' give me 50 soldier, an' if I ever here that kind of talk outta you again you'll be gittin' the lash!

My copy of Basic Dungeons and Dragons came with "dungeon geomorphs" and a "monster and treasure assortment", since B1 hadn't been written yet...
I remember when they came out with the Monster Manual...
My favorite issue of The Dragon (Yes, "The Dragon") magazine was Number 29. It had Gary Gygax's Sorceror's Scroll column, "The Half-Ogre, Smiting Him Hip and Thigh", which was our excuse to make half-ogre characters (5 charisma, here we come!)...

Thanks, we grognards try. I sense a sea-change here in this thread, though. Perhaps we should transmute it into a:
"You know you are a grognard when..." thread.
I shall begin.
"You know you are a grognard when you had brand new Dungeons and Dragons action figures to stand in as miniatures when playing 'Quest for the Hearstone'.

Speaking of dice you had to color in. I still have mine... except for the d20, it actually split in half during a session a few years ago.
I remember the orange one that I had . . . its edges were so worn that it was more of a sphere than a d20. The light blue one held up better though.

I lost my red, colored-in d12 in the Snake River. I was using it to randomly select which dredge haul to subsample...the waves swelled, the barge rocked, and my poor little die shot into the murky depths.
<sniff>
Although I don't feel like a grognard, I probably am. Still have my red box set of D&D basic, the blue Expert book (with 3-hole punches!) and the aqua-blue Companion box set. Plus, the original boxes of Gamma World, Top Secret, and Star Frontiers.

Your products make you grognard worthy. But it is also your mindset. Losing a beloved die in such a fashion, and weeping salty tears into the depths of the Snake River qualifies as such.
Welcome, grognard, be at ease.

How about Metamorphosis Alpha and Empire of the Petal Throne?

Old red box set of basic D&D is only a suggestion of a box... all corners busted out... fullah yellowed graph paper... the cover faded to pink...
Original weird sized Traveller...
Boothill. Top Secret. Star Frontiers.
Never bought a set of dice. Had a few recently as gifts, but never bought any.
Unpainted Grenadier minis that look tiny next to the new guys...
... but I will not go gently into that goodnight.

I started playing during 3rd Edition? Can I be grognard yet?
That depends on whether you consider D&D essentials to be a new game. I'd guess that a good definition of Grognard is when the players of the edition after you complain about their new edition woes, you can gripe about how the world left you behind oh so long ago.
By this principle, very first Original D&D grognards own us all. Or is it Chainmail players? Emily Bronte?

ah good I was hopeing not to be late to the party.
I have come to the inevitable conclusion that yes I am a grognard simply because I still want to play 2nd ed and still have all of my 1st ed stuff waiting for that magical day when I can use it again.
3 and 3.5 will do until then as far as the "other" choice, well I'll just say no.
