XBOX or PS3

Should I get my son (14yr) an XBOX 360 ($350) or a PS3 ($400)?

It depends on what kind of games your son is into. XBox 360 has a much wider selection at present than the PS3 and the PS3's sales/performance haven't been as strong as expected (from what I've read/heard). The Xbox has had a lot more time out of the gate to fix glitches and things like that. On the other hand, PS3 may be the more powerful system in a few years. Find out what kind of games he likes and which system they're on.

If I were buying it for myself, I would go for an Xbox 360 just because the games I want to play are on that platform or coming to that platform (Bioshock, Oblivion, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Resident Evil 5; there is a lot of crossover, though). Take a look at what games he already has on his shelf for the other systems you own and figure out from there what may be the best fit (if you want my advice).

Is this a surprise? If not, I would ask him. Second question are you going to be playing it? I'm sure he'd like either, but hey who to say you can't have fun too. Third don't you need a HD TV to play the PS3? Do you have a HD TV? How much do you care about Blue Ray? If you're like me not a lot.

Don't forget the third option: Wii

The base price is $250. With that you get the console, a controller (with nunchuck), and one game. You can pick up a second controller for $20. There are other peripherals as well.

The Wii has its own games, and plays Gamecube games. In addition, if you connect it to the internet, you can access the Virtual Console, which lets you download a lot of older Nintendo games. Those games cost points, which can be purchased from stores at a rate of about 100 points for $1. I think a typical old game costs about 500-800 points. They don't have every game from their 2000+ library available yet, but they put more up all the time.

The Virtual Console also gives access to a weather station, a music stations, and others. I'm not really sure what all of them are.

The Wii, of course, has the added bonus of you don't just sit their on you butt and play. You get up and move. ALthough you've got to watch the bowling - I hurt my shoulder.

Some people might say that Nintendo mostly targets little kids, and I think that has been true in the past. However, I know that Wii has a version of one of the Resident Evil games, and they also have stuff like Metroid Prime. And there are other, more mature games that they will be putting out in the future.

All in all, I like the system.

The Wii is not even in the same league as the 360 or PS3. It's a fad that will only last a couple of years.

No, you do not need an HDTV to play either the 360 or PS3. They both support both HD and SD formats. However, the PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray player, so if you have an HDTV and are in to HD movies, you might want to think about the PS3.

But to me, graphics, movies, and extra features are just iceing, and gameplay is the cake. The best iceing in the world won't make bad cake tast better. The biggest question you have to answer is: What games does your son want to play?

The major games are:

Xbox 360:
Halo 3 (the biggest game this year, and the system seller for me)
Halo Wars (RTS set in the Haloverse)
Mass Effect (new RPG from the makers of Knights of the Old Rebuplic)
Gears of War
BioShock (awesome creepy game)
Ninja Giaden 2
Dead Rising

PS3:
Final Fantasy XIII
Metal Gear Solid 4
Resistance: Fall of Man

Both Consoles:
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Devil May Cry 4
Assasins Creed
Fallout 3
Guitar Hero 3
Rock Band

If your son just likes sports or racing games, either console will do just fine. The new NFL Madden game comes out on both consoles as do most other sports games.

If you have a high-speed internet connection at home, you should look at the online capabilities of each console. I haven't used the PlayStation Network, but I've heard it is full of bugs and lacks major features, but it's free. XboxLive on the other hand costs $8 a month, but it's well worth the price. Online multiplayer, downloadable content, parental controls, classic arcade games, and the Xbox Creators Club (if your son is intrested in programing, I highly recomend this) make for a great package.

Also with the 360, you can stream media from your computer to your TV and download movies and TV shows from online.

The 360 also comes with a 3-year waranty, the PS3's is only 90-days.

If your son isn't a huge Final Fantsy fan, then I would recomend the 360.

P.s.: If any body wants to throw down in Halo 3 or Gears of War, my XBL gamertag is "Vissigoth". Send me a Friend Request.

I'd go with the 360, but I'm biased since I own one and don't own a PS3. Don't get a wii whatever you do!

If you want to subtly suggest to your son to play with friends, or just get some exercise, I'd get the Wii. It's just damn fun. Just remember to avoid Red Steel.

I own Both..

Xbox 360 I always use because of the great Game selection and none can compare to thier online gaming and additions you can get for the games.

PS3 Not been a game I want to get that is not already on the Xbox 360 (360 has good things you can buy and downlaod to add to the games PS3 does not) Except 2. Folklore and Heavenly Sword, both very good games. I do Constantly Use the Blue Ray player so I love that about it. I own a 1080P 46" LCD screen.

That both said... What makes both those sytems awsome is the HD gaming. And you get the most out of it if you own a HD TV.... If you don't I would suggest getting a Wii which is also a fun System

Well, the only games I ever really play on a console are:
-Halo 3
-Bioshock
-Assassin's Creed
-Guitar Hero II and III

All of those but GH3 are 360 exclusive. *cough*

Between my brother and me, we own all three systems. I can say that there are fun things for each system, but they have different types of things.

I'd have to say that my first pick, if I was getting a system would actually be the Wii. It's a very different gaming experience, with the added bonus of having Raving Rabbids, and its soon-to-be sequel, which is the best multiplayer experience I've ever had. Ridiculous amounts of fun.

As for the Wii being a fad, I really doubt that. Nintendo produces some of the most intriguing games out there, and they make a system that puts a great twist on old themes. Plus, it's already outselling either system the world over.

Oh, so that's why it is outselling 360 all over and still outselling PS3 here in the states.

Granted, I never said that PS3 or 360 were bad systems. I think they are quite good systems, depending on what you are looking for. I was just offering a third, viable (and less expensive) alternative.

Folks seem to dismiss Nintendo, even though they are the oldest of the three major console systems with a library of over 2000+ games. Of course, I'm sure that's just a fad.

Definitly a Wii first if you dont own one. The thing is inexpensive and its cool as heck.

It pretty much can play every single game ever made for Nintendo. The original NES, Super Nintendon and Nintendo 64 games can be downloaded if the Wii is hooked to the internet. Gamecube and Wii disks can be just be played on it of course.

Short of handheld games I own every Zelda game on the same console.

Also online you can purchase Sega Genisis, Turbo Graphix 16 and Neo-Geo games if any of them float your boat.

Every Monday they release 2 or 3 new titles so every week I eargly anticipate what will be available (I keep hoping for the Sega Castlevania game Bloodlines).

Now of course there are people who dont like Wii games and having to actually move around to play them..And other people are not interested in old dated video games.

Out of X-Box 360 and PS3 Id go with the PS3. Admitadly right now PS3 has no desirable games..Only Ratchet and Clank 4 and Guitar Hero 3. XBox 36 however has alot of good games right now (Bioshock rules).

But I feel PS3 has the staying power and over the course of 2008 will blow XBox 360 away.

Yeah, its an Xmas gift, so I hope its at least a mild surprise (you know, like the surprise that Lashonna wasn't evil type of surprise LOL).

I won't be playing it.

No HDTV in the foreseeable future for him. We may occasionally bring it in to the theatre room though.

I am indifferent in the format war.

Thanks for the input everyone!

My sister has a Wii for her kids, and it is indeed pretty fun. But it seemed more like a party system - not for serious gamers.

I was just torn on this issue because of the close proximity in price and the BluRay player was awfully appealing to break into the format war. But you all are right - its not for me, its for my son, and he is interested in games.

I'm going to get the 2-year warranty from "Big Box" store; they tell me that you can pay the difference in the upgrade if you step up the system. I heard that XBOX may integrate the HD DVD player in a future release, so if he wants it down the road, he can get it.

So XBOX 360 it is. As they say, "Content is King".

Thanks again!

PS3 isn't worth getting just yet but half way through next year they'll be Wipeout HD and Tekken 5! :D

Bioshock does indeed rule! I'm currently completely addicted to it.

I started gaming life as a PS2 gamer, but over time grew to like the XBox more due to better graphics and (generally) faster load times. I have a 360 now and love it, the XBox Live Marketplace is very cool and it's nice having lots of Arcade style games for casual party gaming. I also like the XBox controller over the PS2, but haven't played a PS3 yet so am not sure how that controller handles.

I don't know much about the PS3, but if I end up with a few hundred bucks I'm not sure how to spend I might pick one up just to play Ratchet & Clank 4. Otherwise, I'm happy enough with the 360 that I don't really feel a need to get another gaming system.

I love my 360. I usually buy all of the consoles, but the PS3 hasn't sold me yet. It was WAY too expensive at launch, and it still doesn't have any exclusive titles I want. That may all change once Killzone 2 comes out, but the 360 is not lacking for good first-person shooters (Bioshock and Rainbow Six Vegas come to mind).

I'd get a 360.

Yeah, hopefully I'll be able to afford one of those shiny expensive systems by the time RE5 comes out. African American Advocacy groups are already upset over it (the game's set someplace in Africa, thus you're shooting infected black folks for most of the game much like RE4 had you shooting infected spaniards for the most part), but it looks like it will be an amazing game.

I think all races should be shootable in videogames. Let our bullets be blind and just. With the exception of the innuit. I hate shooting innuit for some reason. Must be that terrible beta test I played through, Eskimo Die.

I have a PS3. I'm not an avid gamer, but I like it just fine and the Blu-ray comes in handy quite often.

It is hard to answer this question with using Opnion, I perosnally like the Xbox 360 more because the Xbox only games IMO are much better then the PS3 only games.

I used to say get the 360 because it has a much better online system, it still has a better one but PS3 is getting better.

PS3 is more expensive but it has a blu-ray player.

Xbox 360 if you are going to get it, get the ELite version, and get it now because they are stopping the production of them and only the elite has an HDMI connection.

In graphics, they both look exactly the same.

Do you know anything about the new Xbox chipset?

Also, if your current console and all your games were irretrievably lost, which console would you buy as replacement?

Go for the XBOX 360. It has more games and most multi-platform games are equal to or better on the 360 than the PS3 despite it being the more powerful system. (go figure)

Do you know anything about the new Xbox chipset?
Make sure you get the one with the jasper chip set. Those units will run quieter, cooler and are FAR less likely to get the red ring of death.

I would get another XBOX 360.

As a side note you can download HD movies/TV shows through your XBOX. And both the 360 and the PS3 can stream movies through netflix on demand. (google for details)

Basically speaking, all my competitive gamer buddies were not really all that concerned about HDMI, and the Elite system didn't do so well. The original Elite used Zephyr chipset, and it's prone to RROD (Red Ring of Death). I believe some of the more recent ones may have finally been upgraded to Falcon (I haven't tracked them that rigorously), though the red Resident Evil Elite Limited Edition is Jasper. There's also a new ELITE system being packaged with Halo 3 and Fable 2. I can't say anything about that chipset without seeing the system barcode (see below), and it may be repacks of older black systems. Caveat emptor.

The Falcon chipset reduced the CPU to 65mn, but the GPU stayed old and you got better heat sinks. The newer models (Resident Evil Limited Edition, for example) have the Jasper chipset, which is preferred for heat control and a more solid mobo connection (both CPU and GPU are 65nm.)

How to spot a Jasper System:

The XBOX 360 Box has a window where you can see the system's barcode. Bottom left of the sticker will have "12V--12.1A". Falcon is "12V--14.2A". Both systems are 175W systems.

RUMINT: Two new chipsets: Opus and Valhalla. Opus appears to be the Falcon chipset, but sized for older systems. I'd expect to see that in referbs. Valhalla is rumored for late '09 or '10. I don't have any info on that and all my friends at Microsoft aren't talking. Communists.

But if My Wii, P3S and Xbox 360 all got fried and all the game were lost, I would get a 360 since I have gotten Much more enjoyment out of that system.

But, I do know peope who think other wise..

Think of it this way... Bioware is not developing for the PS3.

Xbox and the WII. 360 for it's wide variety of games. Wii for it's price and its appela to "casual" gamers. PS3 is WAY behind in the console wars. It's price being to high and the only real thing it offers is a cheap BluRay player. PS3 is the top dog in Japan though.

I don't know if it is a byproduct of popularity or scarcity of console availability, but I know that everywhere I go, the WII is the console of demand, while the stores will have several 360s and PS3s.

XBox got that head-start that extended even further because of PS3's poor starting year and initial release titles (I think WotC patterned their latest PR efforts after Sony.)

I think the PS3 will sell, but it's more of a trickle-into-mainstream. I still haven't seen a "ZOMG! I gotta have it!" app for the PS3.

I work at a game store, and have an Xbox 360 myself. Both systems are respectable choices with each one having some small benefits over the other.

Xbox 360 can be purchased at $200 new as a bare-bones model; you have to pay $400 for the cheapest new PS3. However, I'd recommend the $300 Pro system at least, considering how online savvy all the new systems are. But even this 360 doesn't have a built-in Network Wireless Adapter; Microsoft charges you another $100 for those. At this point, both systems cost the same, but the PS3 has 20GB more memory.

On the other hand, although the 360 offers you the choice of installing games to the hard drive with the NXE, a select number of PS3 games require you to install them. This means you can play any 360 practically as soon as you pop it in the system; you may have to wait some time before you can play your PS3 game.

Although Sony introduced a movie service recently, Microsoft's deal with Netflix members being able to instantly access movies in the Netflix member's instant queue is truly fantastic, and gives them the multimedia entertainment edge.

Although you must pay to play online on the 360 (I believe it's still free on PS3), the value of a gold membership goes beyond just online play. You can occasionally download games at a cheaper price, and it's my belief that this money is going to gaining access to console-exclusive downloads, like the Fallout 3, GTA IV, and Tomb Raider: Underworld expansions.

Admittedly, the PS3 should be the definitive HD system with a Blu-Ray player, but I'm not sold on the big deal about Blu-Ray yet. I've seen HD graphics in 720p and 1080p, and the difference between these two resolutions is difficult to even notice, unless you happen to have a 55-inch or larger HDTV capable of 1080p resolution; if you do, could you send some money my way? ;)

Lastly, and importantly, almost every 360 owner I know who's played their 360 frequently has had to replace it at some point over a year or two. My PS2 had to be serviced once in it's 7-year life span; yeah, the 360 console feels cheaply made. Admittedly, Microsoft has made great efforts to repair/reissue the gamer their system with little to no hassle, but I only rarely hear about the PS3 owner who encounters something similar to this.

Most times, I tell people to buy their console based on what games you want to play, but with so many PS3/360 titles being practically identical, it really does come down to the additional features. I put my money down on the 360 this time out, but in the end they're similar enough that I would've been fine with either.

What system do his friends have?

I have a good friend who prefers the PS3 over the Xbox, but is constantly playing the later because it's what all his other friends own and you can't play the same game cross platform.

(I'm all about the Wii personally, but I'm too old and with too little free time to be a hardcore gamer. Plus, I like platformers and Nintendo first party titles a lot, though sometimes the likes of Left 4 Dead do tempt me...)

I have no love for the Wii. The only games that interest me are those staring Samus, and one line is not enough for me to buy the machine (Unless that one line is Final Fantasy, but that's something else entirely.), but I wouldn't call the Wii a 'fad'. It has a lot going for it, price not being the least of them in today's market. And that whole motion sensing controller thing is kind of intriguing. I mean, even Sony is dabbling in that area.

The PS3 is far prettier, but I think the Xbox has more games going for it (at least for my taste in games). For library, I'd say Xbox, for graphics, I'd say PS3.

Can't recommend Wii. I have a friend who owns all three systems, and he almost never plays the Wii. Not enough games to pique his interest, I suppose.

Aside from the oddities like Barbie games, and the occasional useful thing like Wii Fit, I think people miss the point with the Wii.

It's not a videogame system. It's a drinking game system.

Oh, and for the record, I prefer the 360. It has the franchises I'm most interested in these days; Gears of War, Mass Effect, etc - and I believe just recently, according to ign.com, also has the largest RPG collection.
