I've finally begun reviewing Rise of the Runelords for an upcoming adventure. My hope was that I could use it for d20 Modern/Urban Arcana ... and it seems a possible fit.
The problem is that while I like the goblins in Burnt Offerings, I'm thinking it's a bit too early to insert them. I don't want the supernatural/fantasy feel just yet.
I was thinking gangs from a nearby city.
An attack from urban gangs into a rural community should provoke plenty of anxiety ... but the humor of the goblins will be lost.
That said, I was torn between Maine and Lake Superior for its foundation.
Ultimately, I went with Lake Superior - Magnimar becoming Sault Ste. Marie and Sandpoint, keeping its name, will be a small village to the west off either Batchawana Bay or Pancake Bay. (Go to Superiortrails.)
I'm pretty early in, but if any of you have thoughts or suggestions you want to throw my way, I'm more than happy to take them.
Oh, and I'm also starting the campaign around this time of year ... just when things are getting cold. (Haven't read Scrimshaw Murders yet, but the cover looks like fall.)

Why not make them addicts? I think thats how I'd try to squeeze the goblin type personality into a human in the modern day and age, that or mental patients.

Actually, I was thinking of a Filipino gang. A nice tie-in with Tsuto Kaijitsu. (My twist will be like that little guy who kicks the Rock's butt in The Rundown.

Now that I'm reading through Thistletop, I have a little more to add:
1. The original attack will be by a gang (likely heralding from Sault Ste Marie.
2. Runelords are by ancient myth of the Ojibwe, an ancient race of creatures who date back to Creation Stories.
3. Beneath the Glassworks, the group will have their first taste of the supernatural - moving from mundane gang threats, to the abomination that serves the Mephit Queen, undead gang-bangers, to the Mephit Queen herself. (Unless there's a need to keep the access open, I think the Mephit Queen will attempt to bring it all down on the heroes' heads when she realizes that she's on the losing side. As such, there will be no way for the heroes to prove what they have witnessed.)
4. Thistletop will be extra secluded and darn near impossible to reach by boat. The structure itself will be hidden and buried beneath a canopy of trees.
5. There will be goblins at Thistletop - primarily guardians of the place. Nothing more.
