And I do tend to get up in arms rather quickly over things I feel strongly about. No shock to anyone that I feel strongly about my child :)You are doing it right. Get involved, know the facts, don't take someone's word for it.
I think a lot of the problem with kids being over-diagnosed is a lack of parental knowledge/involvement. Quite a few parents just take the school's word on an issue that could have a serious impact on a child's life.
I know there are some people who really do have probelms, and I appologize for being too general in my post.

I would suggest looking into herbal and natural supplements for you kid, Lynora, before going to medication. ADD/ADHD act a lot like Autism (which my almost 4 year old kid is on the spectrum for) and I have found that a a couple harmless supplements really go a long way to helping him control his actions. He doesn't hand flap or tippy-toe walk anymore and his language skill are developing nicely. He is making gains every day now where he could get into a "learning mode" before because of the way his autism was effecting him. He still will throw a fit sometimes if I do something in a different way than usual but usually I can talk him out of throwing a fit.
Anyway the brain is a funny thing and I believe that looking at safe, natural remedies (and make sure that it is safe! Natural doesn't always mean safe) before modern medication is a good idea. Not that modern medicine is bad but every it seems like EVERY medicine has 20 side-effects with a capstone of "may result in death".

A pox on the layoffs!
I am blessed with my daughter. The worst I have had to deal with is being labeled 'mean'. But then she has asthma and gets sick easily…so I guess I am just dealing with different issues.
Oh, and I guess I should add my own Thing In Life That Sucks...my wife. And not in the good way.

Yeah, having a kid with asthma sucks. I was that kid. No fun. I'm very thankful that, even though my kid inherited my asthma, he didn't get my low constitution. He's almost never sick. I know on those few occasions he does get sick it just kills me to see him so miserable. I'm sorry that you have to deal with that more often. And about your problems with your wife. I hope things get better soon.

I can't remember if I've asked you before, but what supplements do you use?
My son is 3 and a half, so similar age.Diagnosed as somewhere on the Autistic spectrum, and still does the dancing on toes and flapping when excited.
He doesn't like chocolate or sweets, so no-one can blame a sugar-rush from them, or chemical food-dyes.
He loves fruit (apples, raisins, bananas), and would eat it all day if he could.
Any possible help greatly appreciated.

Who cancel your social security after sending you on a work experience placement without any kind of explanation for the non payment whatsoever.
And who when you try to get an explanation after you finally discover that they haven't sent you any money for a month pass you from department to department over the phone and then give you a corny 'sorry, our lines are busy, please call back again later' prerecorded message. [/rant]

Going out to the movies for a nice end of the week treat and having someone pull in front of you leaving you no other choice but to either a) slam head first into the side of them, b) swerve into the other cars in the oncoming lane, or c) lay down your bike and hope for the best.
I chose c, and still hit him and now I have back and neck pain, and this is only a few months after I got in a wreck that was my fault. So I just got over a wreck and you heard what happened when I went to court for the tickets, and now I have someone hit me. Lets see, december was the last one, so yeah, two wrecks in the course of 3 months. At least he was at fault and got ticketed.

I know how you feel. Not good. Gotta find me a job!
Damn financial crisis!
I gamed with a guy who worked there some time back, it was a real eye-opener. He used to go on and on about how everyone that came for help were total losers and how they just needed to sort themselves out. How there were 25'000 jobs available in the system, so the unemployed were just being lazy and pathetic and so on....
I remember thinking, "Man, if everyone who works there is like that...." Regrettably, a lot of them are. Doesn't help anyone. :(
Peace,

Continuing with the trend, I'm definitely going to be out of work as of the end of the current season (June) at the TV station. Not all bad, because I'm going to be moving to Georgia in September, but I'm still going to have to look for a two-month temp job.
Good luck with the job hunt! Are you looking foreward to school?

I remember something about running AoW from over on the Tyralandi Scrimm thread.

It's not a great job and it pays minimum wage, but I would suggest maybe going to Goodwill in your area to look at a job. They may be full up with the economy and all, but they're kind of used to having people in on a short term basis.

I did that once; half the length of a joint of an index finger; bled for hours.
Yowch!!!
I've seen much of the like during my tenure as a Scout camp counselor, including:
- a two-inch gash across the back of a staff member's left hand (bow-saw)- inch-long slice along the inner surface of the right index finger (can lid)
- paring knife stabbed through palm of left hand (note: this was the same guy that cut himself with the can lid)
- half-inch, crescent shaped slice on right thumb (broken dishwasher)
- 1.5-inch gouge along left index finger (chisel)
- rusty nail through left foot
As far as personal injury goes, I only have a couple of minor ones, including somehow getting an eXacto knife stuck in the back of my hand, and, when I was in Cub Scouts, burying a two-inch penknife up to the hilt in my upper leg. Kids, learn knife safety early.

Having my family's financial support get pulled out from under us just as we were finally about to get on top of the finances again. Now I'm facing moving to New York to live with my wife's family, very much against my own wishes.
Life is about to take a massive turn downhill.
That's a bummer - I hope it gets resolved soon.

My wife is getting laid off. She is six months pregnant. It doesn't completely suck, because they are going to pay handsomely to avoid a lawsuit for discrimination, and the company is crashing and burning sometime soon anyway. Better to get out now.
We are going from a double income, no kids, to single income, one kid.
And the tax law for foreigners in Taiwan is changing. I jump from 6% tax to 20% tax.
And the Taiwan dollar is losing value.
And my new schedule is only 17 hours.
But we are having a baby boy, and he will be called Merlin, and he will be the luckiest kid in the world, because daddy is such a geek, and mommy is such a saint.

Just had to spend two hours in a cold (somewhere between 15 F and 20 F)garage, while holding a cold metal transit level in order to measure the damn floor (which has been in need of replacement for decades). All the while, I had to listen to my grandfather b!@#+ing at me about how "the economy's been falling to shit ever since that colored boy got elected." F+~%ing wonderful.

When I went downstairs to put in a load of laundry this morning I found that my cat had died. She was curled up in front of her food and water bowls, like she just fell asleep and didn't wake up. We had been talking about having her put to sleep because she'd been acting senile and having trouble finding her litter box, but I guess she got there first. I have spent the last half hour comforting a crying five year old who is very upset about the cat being dead.

My condolences Lynora. I know how hard it is to lose a pet. I lost my 19 year old Dachshund last year and it about killed me.

Very sorry to hear that, Lynora. My sympathies.
