My tattoo finally stopped peeling.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

After a hectic, emotional and otherwise crazy busy couple of weeks, I have a free Saturday AND Sunday. From here on I get to play a CoC game tomorrow and then have a couple of days to finish preparing for GenCon (except for Monday which is my lady's birthday).

I'm looking forward to the quasi-vacation that GenCon will be.

I am going to have to report for jury duty sometime this week.

Why is this on the Good Things thread, you ask?

Because my employer pays full salary while employees are on jury duty.

The fact that I would rather go to jury duty than sit in my cubicle is NOT a Good Thing, but I am putting this in the Good Things thread nonetheless.

Anybody have any tips on how to make sure they select me for a jury? I'd like to stretch it out as long as possible.

Don't dress too formally, or too casual. Stay away from any comments that show your opinions. Be a robot. Then, hope they even call you up for questions once you get in a court.

I'm with ya. I think I'd almost pay to have jury duty right now.

I have to report tomorrow. We shall see...

This also serves as my notice that I won't be posting during the day tomorrow, since I don't plan on bringing a laptop to the courthouse. (I think trying to keep track of it while being called into courtrooms, etc, would be a pain in the ass. I will, however, be bringing my Kobold Quarterly.)

Scarab Sages

Crowd Pleasing Slow Cooker Potato Casserole

Ingredients:
• Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
• 5 (4.9 oz.) boxes Hungry Jack® Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes, or any Hungry Jack® Casserole Potatoes of your choice
• 10 1/2 cups water
• 2 (12 fl.oz.) cans PET® Evaporated Milk
• 4 tablespoons butter, sliced

Preparation Directions:
1. SPRAY a 5 or 6-quart slow cooker with no-stick cooking spray. Add potatoes, sauce mix, water, evaporated milk and butter, stirring until well blended.
2. TURN slow cooker to LOW. Cook potatoes 4 to 5 hours or until fork-tender. Turn off slow cooker. Gently stir potatoes to distribute the sauce. Sauce will thicken as potatoes hold in covered slow cooker. Potatoes will hold in covered slow cooker for up to 1 1/2 hours.

Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 4 hrs

I was picked. Might be a tough trial though. Meh. I'm sure it's going to be very interesting, though.

Let us know how it goes (within the confines of how much you're allowed to talk about the trial, that is). I haven't even been called up for jury duty since I left the Air Force and moved to North Carolina. My wife has been called up three times, though. She never had to actually serve on a jury.

It shouldn't be a long trial, so once it's over I'll be able to shed a little more light on what it's about. It may very well be wrapped up by Friday.

Possibly these things will be happening in the next few weeks:

-Possibly being approved for Social Security Disability income;

-If not, have an opportunity to work at local VA Hospital under Work For Pay program;

-Move into a one bedroom apartment and out of an efficiency. Will allow me to get furniture and D&D book collection out of storage and into use again. Oh, have fairly good collection of Reaper minis that need painting too.

Things seem to be looking up. Just thought I would share.

sounds good there, silverhair. Hope this comes true.

For me, finally getting my hands on the dragon mag CD collection via ebay. I payed 20 Euros for it, including s/h - about as much as a single copy of one pathfinder AP book. And continuing expanding my collection of old dragon mags - expecting #20 to #35 later this week, and for 45 Euros for the whole bunch in a pretty good condition. I like to think that I got some pretty good deals there. Oh, and I just recieved the last three spelljammer novels earlier this week for about 12 or 15 Euros together.

I'm also happy to hear about your possible changes, Silverhair.

I love the CD collection. I've put the whole thing on my computer, which is really nice. It's one of my usual "research" places I refer to.

Okay, so I definitely got more than I bargained for, although the trial was short. This probably doesn't belong on the Good Things thread anymore, but since this is where the discussion began...

It was a child sexual abuse trial involving a father and his very young daughter. That's what I meant about a tough trial. It did end in a guilty verdict and he is going to be in jail for a very long time.

As disturbing as the testimony was, I will say that it was a rewarding and fascinating experience to be on a jury. I'm not about to hop back into jury duty, but eventually I would like to do it again. Hopefully something less violent and disturbing next time. Give me an embezzlement case or something...

Posting something like this could be sufficient to grant a retrial on the grounds of jury prejudice - you've already made up your mind. At least it would in the UK. I'm just saying be careful what you post.

Edit: It might be best if you ask Gary to nuke these posts.

No, that Friday estimate was provided to the court by the judge before jury selection had even occurred and is part of the public record. I didn't reveal anything prior to the reading of the verdict that needed to be kept silent. My subsequent posts were after the verdict was read, so I am free to say anything I like, down to the full names of the people involved (not that I plan on doing that here, mind you). Might be a difference between the US and UK there.

Edit: Just noticed the post you quoted was on Tuesday, so the trial hadn't even begun, which is even safer. But, again, since I was only repeating the presiding judge's comment, there is no issue with anything I've posted here.

I ask you to overlook any possible negative aspect of what I am about to ask.

If you are capable of working for the VA Hospital why would you be trying for the SS Disability?

It seems it would be the opposite if you can't work at the VA Hospital then you would try to get disability.

Not the other way around.

Again not trying to start anything just curious?

Perfectly safe then, and thanks for taking the time to clarify.

@damnitall2, my main attempt is to obtain SS Disability. However, if that fails a second attempt then I have knowledge of a program at the local VA Hospital that puts disabled Veterans to work as part of their rehabilitation into "polite" society. So that is why I made the statements I did. Call it hedging my bets if you like.

Just my 2 cp.

It may be a bit strange, but still:

My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer this spring, it turned out to be inoperable already and will be fatal in a few years. So, all the docs can do is try and keep it in check. So far for the backstory, which I posted in the "things that suck" thread a while ago.

Now, my mother just called to tell me that my father responds very good to the hormone therapy, and that the count of the indicators was very low indeed. So, we are quite happy now for the time being. My father is 74 now, and on average, you will have 3 to 5 years after that diagnosis. He is in quite good shape for his age, having been fond of bicycling for 25 years now. This, coupled with the above news, lets us hope that it will closer to five than three years he still got to live - if he does not die of other causes. To be honest, at 74, the chance of a fatal heart failure or stroke doesn´t get any lower. Still, if the overall situation is bad, news like these are pure gold.

Thanks for the kind words. I´m happy that I have a very good relationship to my parents, and they live within walking distance from my place. Everybody dies eventually, of course, but getting presented with the confirmed knowledge and even a rough timeframe was quite tough for me to digest. OTOH, we get the chance to say goodbye, which is a good thing IMO.

I got to run / play in two different Pathfinder Society games yesterday! And I'm running another one later today! And I get to play in one tomorrow night!!!

I'm in Pathfinder Society Elysium!!!

Its gonna be a great weekend.

An Addendum to my original post. I have not heard the decision on my application for SSDI. However, with that being said, I have been accepted into the program at the local VA Hospital that allows veterans to get "work therapy" and be paid for it. There are restrictions like half minimum wage and 32 hours or less a week. But I was told that it does not count as income nor will it affect any disability income I receive. So, it looks like I might be able to afford the Mini's subscription (?) and be able to eat at the same time.

Good things.

Okay. Well despite some recent failings by the England (men's) cricket team which I may have mentioned on another thread, that really was quite a good throw by Flintoff today to dispose of the Australian captain, Ricky Ponting. Which run out may well have been the key to the day finishing with England actually winning The Ashes, somewhat to my surprise.
Yes. That was probably quite a Good Thing. :)

Congrats Derek, it is a rewarding journey, even if occasionally you feel like someone gave you a part in a play with no script or prompts, LOL.

My wife accepted a job at a catering bakery. It is exactly what she wants, and although the pay and bennies are less than her previous gig, she is much happier about working now. Also, her mentor/boss there is a gamer, in fact her and her husband host a bi-monthly 3.5 D&D game somewhere on Cape Cod. I am hoping for an invite eventually once they become friendlier. Oh, and I guess this pack of grognards haven't heard of Pathfinder yet. Word-of-mouth away!
