Complimentary copy for writers?

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

This is prehaps a bit off topic, but since this seems to effectively be a Dungeon/Dragon writers' forum as well...

Do writers get a complimentary copy of the issue in which their article is published? It's common practice for many magazines around here, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that Paizo does this too, but I can't find it now. Or was that just wishful thinking? :)

Yes, you do though it might take several months before you see it. For example: I'm still waiting on my extra copies of Dungeon 142. I believe it is a copy or two per article - though they don't come with any of the frills (like fold out poster maps) that may have been included in the regular subscription or newstand copies.

Hint-hint, wink-wink, nudge-nudge,
;)

Of my three published articles in dragon, I got complimentary copies for two of them... as GGG says the ones I did get took a while to get here.

i've had 3 printed articles so far, but i didn't know we get a comp copy...

(from the looks of things, i've also got at least two monsters in Dragon #355 next month - hello obliviax and scarecrow!)

I had an article in #352, but still haven't seen any compimentary copies. But, if it's common for them to take so long, at least I know I'm not waiting in vain ;)

Was afraid I wouldn't even be able to get my hands on one; they're nearly impossible to obtain where I live and I don't have a credit-card, nor do I know anyone who has one.

Never got a comp copy for any of my Dragon articles ... but I got some compliments. :)

But since I'm already a subscriber, what would I possibly do with a second copy?

I got a comp copy in the pre-Paizo days but not more recently for my "Impiltur" article. Who cares, I was just thrilled to get published again.

I give one of them to my mother, so she doesn't snitch my subscription copy. The other I put away in a box.

Your MOM plays D&D!?! That is sooooooo cooooool. (My mom just plays Sequence, which she beats me soundly every time.)

We send comp copies when an author requests them. If you'd like to receive comp copies for articles you've written you need to email the editor you worked with. In your case, Jasin, that would be me. :)

And just so we're clear up front: It takes a while for us to send out requested comp copies. If you get your comp copies within a month of asking for them consider yourself fortunate.

Oh! And if you don't request your comp copies within a couple months of the article coming out you're likely out of luck. So no asking for comp copies of #333 or something like that!

I get comp copies randomly. I consider them little presents from my editors. :)

No, my Mom hates D&D. She calls it "that stupid game you play." :-\

She just thinks it's neat that I'm a published writer.

Nothing like a mother's love ...

Well what do you expect when you wield a +3 greataxe and rage right before posting?

Umm...

I'm not sure why I ascribed barbarian levels to you, Troy. What I wrote is not even funny.

Hmm... :\

is there anyway to get onto a permanent "I would like comp issues" list?

I would like to be on that list.

Spoiler:
*rubs hands together at the thought of free Dungeon and Dragon magazines*

Wait...you mean I only get the issue if I'm published?

In that case, I just want to set the record straight, although I post under the name Sebastian, my name is really Nick Logue. I happen to have a second address for my Sebastian account because I am fabulously wealthy from being a successful freelancer, so please send my comp copies to that address.

$1,000 in small, unmarked, nonsequential bills sent every month to the Paizo office. Attention Mike McArtor.

After a year or two of that, I might try to put together some kind of list...

;D

Duly noted.

i'd need a better guarantee than that for $12,000 a year. ;)

If it takes a rage special ability to resurrect a thread, I'm all for it.

Raging Resurrection (Su): Once per day, when raging, you may resurrect a thread.

Man, that's such a munchkin ability. I imagine a player taking this feat and walking around, getting angry at nothing in particular just so that he can true rez this thread. And, since it's (Su), it has no expensive material components!

This looks like a job for Power Word: Back on Topic!

...

Damn. My wisdom is too low for even a simple cantrip :(

Hehe, they'll even send their comp copy abroad. I got a few about two months after they went on sale. Not bad considering I live in the UK.
