Me too. XP are not too interesting by themselves; level gain, on the other hand...

Hey, guys! Just curious how this is all working out for you.

I have no idea how it even works. I'm old and easily confused by computers.

Well, it hasn't officially started yet, so I don't know how it will work, either! Grimcleaver's game was going great before his system kicked the bucket and ended all our fun, but we never got to try combat in that game. I'll post up a link of some kind to wherever I decide to hold it (all my time's been spent working on the campaign itself thus far, and I haven't really had a chance to look into the Internet mechanics so much).

Sexi- if you could repost the name of Daeman's father, I'd appreciate it. I know you told it to me last night on the phone, but I can't remember anything than it had an H and an F in it now. :) Heck, just post up the whole shpeel whenever your computer stops having its "issues."

Liberty's Edge

Right on.
I think I saw somebody at enWorld say, "pbp is kinda clunky,...but not as clunky as getting five 35 y.o. men in the same room at the same time." So, I'm interested in seeing how it's all done at least...

Grand Lodge

Concerning combat - I assume we won't be rolling it out in real-time, or even rolling anything at all. Do you want us to write up some combat macros or some equivalent guidelines for handling armed scuffles?

Also - what time of year is it when we start?

Well, my handy-dandy d12 is currently telling me that it's going to start in September. I'll have to sit down and think about the possible campaign implications and see if I want to change that, however. I use the Gregorian calender, by the way, since I tried coming up with my own a few years back. Someone (*cough* Sexi Golem *cough cough*) laughed it right out of existence, however, and I've never bothered to take the time to make another. (The year, however, is 3126 of the Sundered Age (S.A.), which relies on the elven reckoning of years (thus the very large number)).

As for combat, I'm not exactly sure what you mean regarding macros. If I go with MythWeavers or some other PbP site, they have built-in die rollers that will be utilized. If I just run it here in the campaign journals section, then I think rolling out of game will be just fine (it worked in Grimcleaver's game).

I suppose a good format would be to roll the attack and damage simultaneously, to save time, and then just ignore the damage if it was deemed a miss. I would handle critical hits as listing the attack, the critical confirmation roll, the normal hit damage, and critical damage. The irrelevant parts can be left out as needed. Of course, that may not be necessary if Myth Weavers has a proper system for such a thing. My goal is to have that element of the logistics figured out by the end of today.

Also, a question for Fatespinner: How long ago was it that your uncle was slain in battle with the chimera? And how long have you been in Thirgard? It's a pretty long walk (~1,000 miles). Is there a specific goal you've set for yourself so that you'll know when you are "ready?" Or is there anyone back home that would come looking for you? Also, do you plan on ever returning home, or just becoming "one" with the frozen north? I suppose your character can change his mind about this at any time, but I'm just curious what is in your/his head at the moment.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Just got back from vacation out of town! :)

Ethras' uncle was slain about 20 years ago, when Ethras was still adolescent. I feel that 1000 miles is not so great a distance to traverse over such a time. I have the impression that he's BEEN in Thirgard for about two or three years at this point. He's starting to acclimate to the terrain and learn how things work up here. At the moment, Ethras will believe that he is 'ready' when his own understanding of the natural world exceeds that of his uncle (his uncle was 9th level). He does intend to return to the forest for vengeance but not until he is certain that he has surpassed his uncle's skill. In game terms, I think Ethras would recognize his superiority around level 11 or 12.

As for people coming to look for him, Ethras and his uncle lived alone a hundred miles from his family. His family almost certainly knows about his uncle's death but Ethras was nowhere to be found. They would not have any idea where to begin their search if they were so inclined. Honestly, his father probably recognized that, if he is still alive, Ethras is more than capable of handling himself. "He's a ranger now. He is more prepared to face the world than most of us. Let him return on his own terms." I doubt anyone is actively looking for him. Elves are certainly known for their patience and there would be no rush to locate him. After all, he's got a few CENTURIES left to live. He'll come around eventually.

All right, good to know!

Daemans father is named Hunfreer and He's full blow Ak. He is alive well and currently somewhere around the frozen wastes trying to pick up on his arcane advancement now that his son no longer needs his guidance. I'll leave his current location, well being and level of power/importance up to you Saern use whatever works for your world.

Daemans only other relative is an Aunt Gwendred the head cook and owner of a nice Inn in Northwind "The Spoon and Spindle". I can make her more detailed upon request (married? kids? ect.)

Saern wrote:

Even simpler: just assume that the critical is a straight multiplier of the initial damage dealt, so you don't need to list critical damage. Format I suppose would be...

Mithras charges the warlock and strikes fiercely with his spear. (25! (18); 10 dmg)

So 25 would be the result of the initial attack roll, the ! represents a 20 being rolled, the 18 is the confirmation roll result, and 10 damage is noncritical (critical would thus be 30 for a spear). Nonmultiplied damage would go after initial damage (so a flaming spear would be listed like 10 dmg + 4 fire or the like).

If it's been established that, for example, the 18 in the previous example confirmed a critical hit against that opponent, further criticals against that foe above the known critical point would be shown as X crit rather than X dmg. Sound good?

EDIT: How do want to handle natural 1s?

"Macro" might not have been the best term. I was thinking of a general description of "how I fight", or something along these lines:

Hrothgar is uninterested in glory - he has seen too many "heroes" in his native lands, all of whom seemed to be middle-aged cripples with nothing but dubious tales to their name. He does not shun fights, but he fights to win. He would rather drop a huge rock on an opponent's head from a safe distance than face it in combat. Thus, he does not hesitate to strike from ambush, kick sand in his foes' eyes or grapple a vulnerable foe while an ally strikes it. He maneuvers in melee to flank foes, and seeks to drop the strongest enemy first. Though he he is more capable in melee combatant than missile exchanges, he tries to get off a few slingshots before closing for hand-to-hand combat.

Hrothgar tries to conserve his spells in combat. If forced to fight a seemingly superior foe, he casts Bless before the fight starts, and then casts Command at the biggest enemy, trying to force it into situations that provoke attacks of opportunity (i.e. "Sleep" in the middle of a melee). Otherwise, he saves his spells for healing.

Of course, if we'll be rolling out our combats, this isn't really needed anymore...

Yeah, I like this idea and format. For things like flaming burst (or other abilities that alter the way a critical functions), we would have to add something like "+4 fire dmg (+7 if critical)" and that seems kind of needlessly complicated. Do we just want to say that 'burst' weapons deal an additional 4 damage of the appropriate energy type on critical hits or do we actually want to roll a d10 on potential crits with such weapons 'just in case'?

I'm kind of worried about the 'auto-multiplier' for crits, though. It seems like it will streamline things nicely, but for an archer like me, rolling a '1' on my longbow damage means scoring a whopping 3 damage on a CRITICAL HIT. Kinda sad. Sure, I could ROLL three 1s for damage normally, but its much less likely than rolling a single '1' on one die. I'm willing to go with the concensus here, but I'm just expressing my concerns to the masses.

Well, energy burst weapons are (supposedly) not going to come into our hands for a while (if ever), so I don't think we'll have to worry about that just yet.

I just had an idea: Why don't we let Saern do all the mechanical stuff? He has access to our character sheets. He can see our bonuses, damage, hit points, and all that. Why don't we make combat posts like so:

Ethras steps forward and crouches slightly as he quickly fires upon the approaching giant (Rapid Shot, both shots at giant #1).

Then, Saern does all the rolling and posts the reply completely free of mechanics (except damage total):

The first arrow strikes true, punching a hole through the giant's flimsy armor. The shot draws a bit of blood and an irritated grunt from the charging giant (4 dmg). The second shot flies a bit low and buries itself in the snow as the giant charges right over it...

For dramatic's sake, we could keep the '!' to denote criticals as such:

The first arrow strikes the giant in the forehead, sending the monster reeling back in pain (17 dmg!)...

What does everyone else think (especially Saern, as it would mean ever-so-slightly more work on your part)?

Grand Lodge

That's more or less how I thought it would be. For what it's worth, I like it.

Gods, you guys are demanding!

Just joking, I'm totally fine with all that ("that" being me handling the math). It will actually save a lot of time and streamline things quite a bit.

Can you all e-mail me the sheets, just so they're in a nice format that I can copy and paste into my files? I'll also have your return e-mails in case I need to send a super-secret DM message! The address is williebiel@epowerc.net

Oh, and as for Daeman, his aunt is single and his father moved to Northwind after the bard left, to take advantage of the city's well-developed libraries, something woefully lacking in Ak lands.

Sounds good to me. Saern, you have mail. The formatting may be off, since I've got a mac and moving files between plaforms always futzes with the formatting.

Fatespinner wrote:

Oh, dang! I just now realized that was your character's name! Uh... is it too late to change my character's name (again)? I'll try and think of something better this time (maybe Hrothger? ;-P).

Okay, here we go.

In the interests of an inside joke, my third choice is Zeke.

However, I'm striking that out as swiftly as it was brought up, so...

For my final, not changing end of the line name....

Ian. That's it. I ain't changing it any more than that.

Saern wrote:
Also, Thanis, how exactly, does Mithras' mother cope with her handicap? And what creatures are your parents exactly? Human? Aasimar? Half-celestial?

I guess I missed this.

I think I'll leave the specifics of how she overcomes her disability to you, but I will suggest: First off, a mundane wheelchair (or whatever would be appropriate for someone who's crippled but not poor). It won't get her anywhere in a hurry, but she's learned to take life slowly. Secondly, a headband or similar wondrous item that allows 5 uses per day of levitate (CL 4, 14,400 gp). Also, she would focus on spells that provide and augment mobility. Flight, Freedom of Movement (not that that would allow her to walk), etc. Heck, maybe she has a shield guardian who carries her around?

My father is human; my celestial bloodline is from my mother. Again, I'll let you decide what that makes her. In one game I'm playing a tiefling in, my mother (again, the bearer of the outsider heritage) was human, but her father was a half-fiend. Essentially the bloodline skipped a generation.

Grand Lodge

Just mailed you my character sheet as well. If you didn't get it, please let me know.

Sweet! Greensails family reunion! I've decided that his family knows he is coming home to visit and Daeman is taking the dangerous land route just to surprize his family as they will probably be checking the docks looking for him to sail home! It's chaotic and totally justified by a 7 in wis!

Genius! Um, not really...., but, well, you know what I mean.

I recieved the character sheets. Thanks!

Ian sounds fine, Thanis. :) I think the mother will be human and I will utilize the "generation skipping" element. That's how I've envisioned a lot of planetouched as occuring, often without explanation.

All right, that should give me all the info I need (for now!). I'll work on the finishing touches and decide on a campaign platform and we'll be good to go at last.

Grand Lodge

Well, I'm nothing if not a follower, so I too added some more detailing to my backstory and put in some family stuff as well on my character sheet.
Saern - do you want me to re-mail the sheet to you? It hasn't changed beyond the background, but if you want the newest version...

Nah, that's not necessary. I've already done my own write-ups and blurbs off the various character backgrounds, particularly the parts that I plan on working with. I just wanted easier access to the mathematical elements of the characters, since I'm going to be doing the rolling.

I have registered over at Myth Weavers and, once I figure out the inner workings of the system, should be ready to go. The major deciding factor was the apparent ability to post images, so I can actually show you all a map of the region you're in. I'm looking at late Friday or sometime Saturday as a launch date.

I apologize if things get slow once and a while due to school work, but I have high hopes and lots of ideas for this game and am looking to take you all into the higher levels with it. I'll post up a link when the thing gets off and running, but feel free to head over to the site any time and look around. Erian_7 posted a link on the first page of this thread.

I'm also looking to continue using this thread as the out-of-character discussion grounds for the game.

Hmm... the Myth-Weavers site is blocked by the firewall at work. This could prove problematic as work is the only time I would really be able to participate (and possibly on weekends).

Wow, that is a problem. I'm not completely sure what to do about that, other than move to a different site. However, if Myth Weavers is blocked, my guess is most other, similar pages would be also. Any suggestions from the peanut gallery?

I play on Rondak's Portal I dunno if it will work from your work but give it a try, it set up in away that it USUALLY works, but not all the time.

Also after looking around on Myth Weavers, Rondak's Portal looks way better and more organized, only problem is that games can take a few days to be posted (but they get their own private 'forums' basically... and character sheets can suck, but since we already did those and don't need them then its no problem!)

Rondak's Portal works just fine! Thanks, Arc!

You're link isn't working for me- it's just taking me back out to the D&D general discussion page here at Paizo.

EDIT- I got to the site, just by going to www.rondaksportal.com, and it looks interesting, but before I register to another board, I'd like to know that everyone can actually access this one with ease.

Grand Lodge

Both sites work just fine for me.

Ditto.

Likewise. Rondak's Portal seems a bit less intimidating than Myth Weavers, anyway. I couldn't figure out quite what the point was in applying ability scores and a class archetype to my account, anyway. Looks like the Portal may have been built with earlier editions in mind -- I see references to non-weapon proficiencies and Night Vision in one of the "guides".

In short, though, either site is a green light for me.

Both work for me

The Portal has games of all types... from first edition D&D to Vampire the Requiem to Amber the Diceless Roleplaying game (alright I am the only one that runs an Amber DRPG there...)

I been at the portal for going on 6 years now, the community is awesome too.

Very well, Rondak's Portal it is. I'll go ahead and register, and, once I get the opening scene worked out, launch the game sometime this weekend!

EDIT- Or, maybe not. I've been spending the last 20 minutes just trying to register. My connection speed is slow, but I've never encountered this much trouble getting to a site before. The computer keeps telling me that the "connection timed out." I am officially registered, and I didn't have this trouble when I went there before. I'll check the site later today and tomorrow, but if the problem doesn't resolve itself, we'll need to find yet another PbP site.

Here's hoping for the best!

Also, to Arcmagik and Sexi Golem: can you e-mail me Arerath and Daeman? They're the only characters I don't have saved to my hard drive yet. Thanks!

YAY! I look forward to rendering many foes into pincushions in the near future!

The Portal is currently have some ISP issues, which will hopefully be resolved very soon. My bet is something had to happen in Canada were the server is located that caused it to get wacky (the last week has seen an increasingly problematic lag/time-out issue, Rondak is aware of the portal being out right now and is working on correcting it as I said, it is ISP issues.)

I know all of this because I am in the Portal's yahoo group for when things like this happen.

Very well, then. I suppose we'll just be delayed a bit longer until things return to normal on the website. Hopefully it won't take very long.

I was just looking over our aspiring Ultimate Magus' hit points, and noticed they were listed at 14. You wouldn't happen to have a toad familiar not listed somewhere, would you, Arcmagik? If so, I presume you have two familiars. What is the other one?

EDIT- I also notice you haven't spent any of the 900gp alloted to a 2nd level character. When you've got that all taken care of, please send me the character sheet so I can plan your imminent demise, er, how to integrate your character....

Grand Lodge

Speaking of hit points, do you have a system you prefer us to use? After getting 8 hp on level 1, I intended to do the 5,4,5,4 sequence - thus, I have 19 hp now, will have 25 on level 3, 32 on level 4 etc. Is that fine with you?

I've never had a player choose to take average hit die, but I've got no objection to it, I suppose.

Thanis (or anyone else), can you post the text on monkey grip? Specifically, does it give a -2 penalty on attack rolls? Because your attack bonus is off by that much if it doesn't.

Grand Lodge

Monkey Grip lets you wield a weapon one size too large in return for a -2 attack modifier. Thus, his attack bonus is correct.

Okay, that's what I thought, but I was just double checking. Thanks!

I'm more or less ready to launch, so it really comes down, now, to when the portal gets back online.

so how is this going; I would like to run some adventures or campaigns from my world online like this but dont know much about it and have been checking threads like this to glean a little insight; I tried a few I found online, but they never got off the ground.

Portal is back up, you should apply your game with all haste as it will take a few days to get it posted so that we can all join in on it. I will finish up my inventory tonight or tomorrow night (and the HP is in error, its suppose to be 12. I don't know how PC Gen got that error, because it even says 12 now when I checked in PCGen.)

It's going to take a wee bit longer: I just got a load of course work to deal with. School work first, you know? Hopefully it won't set us back too far, I just need to get these projects under control, and then I'll get us launched.

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

Just bumping the thread for an update. Any new info? How's the school stuff going, Saern?
