ever burning torches

3.5/d20/OGL

Every adventurer needs one. The coolest things since, well... choppy things that make orcs be dead and treasure come out. Frikkin everburning torches. Even if you have them cool racial "abilities" to see in the dark nd such, you just gotta get one of these things for the low price of 110gp.

So, the description says:
Everburning Torch
This otherwise normal torch has a continual flame spell cast upon it. An everburning torch clearly illuminates a 20-foot radius and provides shadowy illumination out to a 40-foot radius.

Now, does it have to be a torch with the continual flame spell cast on it? I've always allowed (and taken the liberty to take) things other than torches with continual flame cast on them. For example:

My favorite - 3 ft. piece of rope with a metal ring spliced onto the end. Spell is cast on the end of the rope w/o the ring. You can hang it, loop or tie it around things, wear it "bolo tie" around your neck, et al.

I've had players just cast it into a bullseye lantern. Of course, cost of spell and cost of bullseye lantern. I had another player fit a polished piece of silver and glass into the back of a slim tube and had cont. flame cast inside to make a "slim lantern" (flash light). I gave it the illumination qualities of a bullseye but lighter and easier to carry.

I even had a player rig up his helmet (with a gnome helper of course) to have a little shutter attachment added with cont. flame cast inside of the little opening. In battle, he'd use a movement action to flip up the shutter, unleashing a flame on his head! The baddies all aimed at him obviously - the player loved it.

Can any of you guys come up with other really good uses? I'm thinking of having a specialty merchant NPC sell these things.

Oh, and a tip: good lantern bearers are monks in the party. They can hold a lantern or torch and still be fully combat effective (unarmed at least).

Always been a big fan of the ol' Continual Light on a coin, kept in a small puch or box. Or multiple even so you can chuck one or two down a dark hole to see what's down there.

A good sized rock. If the party has a spell caster with access you can get a light source that can be dropped in a lantern or in an emergency (and low levels) can be whipped at an enemy as an impromptu weapon...all for a simple spell slot and the effort it took to bend over and pick up your stone. ;)

My friend's dwarven cleric is inordinately proud of his continual flame mug.

Word!

Gotta tell that to my ever-dwarf playing player.

A friend and I have a habit of picking up Dusty Gray Ioun Stones with Continual Flame cast on them. Hands free light source, and it looks cool as well -- I'd rather not mess with a guy who's got a flaming marble flying around his head. Casting it on a length of rope is a nifty idea as well, though I've always liked the idea of Armor of Continual Flame. It's just a light source, but it might help deter would-be grapplers anyway.

Coupla questions that repeatedly come up regarding Continual Flame, or... as the group calls it, "The Everburning, Never-Burning Torch."

So, Continual Flame creates light, but no heat. So, it can't burn anything. Thus, "Everburning, Neverburning Torch."

(This one was brought up by a player at last night's game, so I thought I'd ask what the lot of you think - I have my own idea).
If you wish to dispel the light on the Everburning Torch, do you treat it as a magic item, or as a stick with Continual Light cast on it?

Personally, I'd treat it as a stick with Continual Light and thus the Dispel Check is against the level of a caster who can cast Continual Light (thus, not that hard to do).

Cool, does the flame's light project from the inside of the mug?

"Finish your drink, Thorin, I need to see what's down the corridor!"

Well, this may not exactly be useful, but back in the day, my favorite character, Fang, had continual light (2e) cast on his teeth for a truly brilliant smile :)

Continual Flame cast on an arrow allows the party to illuminate distant targets at night, in long corridors, or in the underdark's larger caverns. Sort of like a flare.

As a variant to the Continual Flame stone, if you cast the spell on a sling stone, the party's halfling could use it for the same effect.

There was an article in a very old issue of Dragon describing light bombs made by encasing a rock with Continual Light (now Continual Flame) cast on it in ceramic. No light showed through until the ceramic was broken. Recommended against Drow, if I recall.

Continual flame sheild, good light source while stil having the defence bonus...
another spell in this vein is Glowing Orb found in the "Spell Compendium", I dont remember the level off hand, but do remember that you need a glass orb to cast it on, it's permanant, and you can control the illumination level up to 60ft(I think)

Agreed. i, too, have always used it on a coin.

Frequently used it on sling bullets, coins, the back shaft of arrows (because it doesn't help if you cast it on the head and shoot it into an opponant...unless you want to light up their innards), shields, and helmets. Mostly I use it on things that don't have to be continually held.

One of my thieves, sorry... rogues kept a continual light copper in his beltpouch along with 7 or 8 others. That way if he tossed 'em down, smart enemies wouldn't know exactly which one to snatch to control the light source.

Yep. Since it was more of a stein, he could put the lid back on it and cover up the flame if he needed to. Considering getting him the If It's Not Dwarven, It's Crap shirt because of that dwarven cleric. :) The player was always creative with his spells - the party was fighting a dokufu (from Oriental Adventures) and couldn't come up with a way to really defeat it. They happened to be fighting in a cavern, so he cast transmute stone to mud on the ceiling, then quickly followed it up with transmute mud to stone, encasing the dokufu.

Me & my other half got him the "adventurer's towel" for his birthday last week - he always insists that his characters have this much-needed item in every game setting we've ever played with him. It was appropriate, and as he put it "thoughtful - much better than a random, traditional birthday gift."

Lilith. Let me guess... You have the "'cause I'm the GM, that's why" T-Shirt? I thought so! I think you should also have the "Chaotic Evil" shirt too! You evil, evil Demon Queen of Victuals!

Sometime, I just use it on that damn party rogue who keeps stealing from me! "Ha! Try hiding in shadows now, you thief!" Followed by a quick Teleport out of there as he attacks me in rage!

I'm thinking codpiece.

But then again, I'm sort of an idiot.
