Dragon 344: very UN-COOL feature

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

I just got my Dragon 344 and was very disappointed to find that the glue used to stick the Book-club advertisement to page 66 was so strong that it ripped apart the right-hand section of the page.

I've dealt with these glued-in adverts before and pride myself on getting them out without damaging my magazine, but whatever was used for the latest issue SUCKS for we the subscribers.

PLEAS PLEAS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE -NEVER- used this wretched glue again!

ditto. i had the EXACT same problem!

Same thing happened to me as well. Started to peel it like it always does then RIP! "Crap!"

And me... After reading these warnings, no less!

WELL, that advertisement shall be eternally ensconsced in the pages of MY issue. Thanks for the warning.

CU Amiga magazine had a similar problem when they sticky-taped disks to the cover. By the time they had moved to CDs on the cover, they began to use a flat line of sticky stuff that was soft, and so peeled off safely with no tearing or residue. Presumably it was like glue when applied, but the time you get the magazine it's like slightly sticky rubber.

With some tenderness, I managed to pull the Book Club ad out without tearing, but yes, that was some strong glue.

Well, good thing I haven't checked the mail yet - I will be careful, and thanks for the warning!

Hey, don't feel bad - my advance copy that I got a week or so ago did exactly the same thing. We're looking into it, I can assure you...

When my copy arrives I will make sure to not remove it. Thank you for the warning and I am sorry to hear this happened to anyone.

Somebody actually mentioned an Amiga magazine?! Well! Thanks for the warning guys, I have a week left before it comes out in my FLGS.

Thanks for the warning; I Xacto'ed it out (Bookofthemonthclubectomy?) with no complications. Post-op recovery went smoothly...

Actually, my grandfather helped to invent those things. Every time I see one of those cards that falls out when you first open the magazine or the little glued-on inserts, I think of Grandpa Tony. He also worked on the first plastic milk jugs, and when he brought one home, my dad (who was young at the time) said they'd never catch on.
And yeah, that annoyed me that it ripped them.

Wish I had seen this post before I tore into my issue... literally thanks to that glue.

I had no problems at all removing mine. It was the usual "rubbery" glue, and peeled right off without a problem.

*shrug*

So, perhaps letting it cure another couple days would have helped. It's been warm where I live, mine came off with no problem, although it was a bit stickier than normal.

I'm sorry to hear that so many of you are running into problems with this insert.

I've tested removing these cards from several issues and from what I can determine the tearing of the page seems to happen most often when the card is pulled in a perpendicular motion relative to the spine. When I pulled the card in a parallel motion relative to the spine (either softly and slowly or with plenty of force) it seemed to separate without damaging the page. I've checked with our printer and they have assured me that they used the same glue they normally use when tipping something into the magazine (the booger-glue) and they are experiencing similar results as I did when attempting to remove the card.

I hope this helps :)

rubber cement, perhaps? :D

I didn't have any trouble. I had to go really slow, but it came out without a hitch.

Update: The operation was a success! The object was removed without injury to the patient. The glue seemed perhaps a tad stickier than previous occasions, but that could have been my imagination (I was pretty nervous). Commiserations to those who have not had my luck, and good fortune to those yet to try!

Mine made it out safely, but I was extra-cautious thanks to the warnings here.

I had to bend my magazine a little so I could make sure it was flat. The resistance seemed more than normal. Was it the placement in the mag? It seemed closer to the end than normal, but maybe that was my imagination?
