Pick your 6

Having the ability to communicate on messageboards (such as this one) via the medium of the internet have broadened the spectrum of social interaction to people and locales that have traditionally been exempt from individual interactions. The medium of the internet and identity/personality issuses that can be problematic in society are well documented and perhaps should not be brought up in this forum. What is of particular interest and germaine to this site is our understanding of those who post here in relation to the values, beliefs, and practice that we, as indidual gamers, perceive. In short, if you could put together a group of six other gamers to game with based only on the posts that you have read in this forum, who would your group consist of and why?

As ever,
ACE

Scarab Sages

I think all six are complete 'love of the game' types

1) Chris Wissel - Chris has a calmness and 'consider the possiblities' type attitude that is awesome. Undoubtedly, my 1st seat.

2) Great Green God - Funny, pithy, thinking as bent as a slinky. If nothing else, we can spend the gaming session driving others nuts by quoting 'The Tick' an nauseum.

3 & 4) Farewell2Kings & Ultradan - The dynamic duo seem like peas in a pod. I think that they would be excellent gaming buddies.

5) Marc Chin - Seems like a fearless DM who is willing to give his players a lot of free reign in trying new things, but likewise runs a tight ship. Marc is a 'screen-monkey' I would love to butt heads with, because I think that it would challenge me and make my a better player and DM.

6) James Jacobs - The mind that cherishes the Demonomicon, Greyhaw, and Cthulhu? It almost goes without saying. And James always seems to have a fresh angle on things. Would you pass up a chance to be running with the next Chuko or Tyrandi?

Hmm... that's a sticky issue. I'll be the first to say that I really cannot decide. Sexi Golem and DragonNerd are already members of my group, but there are so many people that have so many good points and views, I just can't choose who would make the best gaming group. Sorry for the indescision.

Gav, you flatter me; I appreciate your sentiments.

Having a history of running big groups, I would thus pick ten people:

1) James Jacobs - We seem to agree on 99% of rules & game mechanics and I'm sure that DMing would improve just by knowing he was there.

2) Erik Mona - Got to invite the bigwigs; it's not golf, but... ;-)

3) Gavgoyle - Flattery gets you nowhere? Not at my table!
I notify all my players that I'm fully bribeable... :-D

4) ASEO - A sense of humor and good character for the table, in and out of game; military stories are bonus.

5) Ultradan - Compliments ASEO at the table, as would...

6) Farewell2Kings - Any fellow Rush fan is welcome.

7) Great Green God - Can you tell I like group chemistry in the group?

8) Flushmaster - Has been folowing the game journal and is familiar with my style.

9) Steve Greer - Also familiar with my game and similar in style as a DM.

10) Guest invite to Vin Diesel - need I say more?

There are others I would add (Lilith, Medesha, Platypus, Tiger Lily, as well as others I don't recall), but I'd be getting out of thread, wouldn't I...

The Six

Farewell2kings; For his overall experience and calm demeanour. It would be cool to hear all the stories a detective/ex-combat medic has in his backpack. F2K’s posts always enlighten me. I would kill to have a player like that in my group.

Lilith; I like to read what Lilith has to say. Her posts are smart and interesting. Just from her posts, I have developed a great respect for her. She just kicks ass! She would surely keep us on track (and maybe, as a systems administrator, she could develop great software for our game!).

Saern; At almost twenty, he walks and talks like the pros. His fresh views on many subjects have often put my own views into question. He’s welcome at my gaming table anytime.

Gavgoyle; Come on! Who wouldn’t want a museum curator in his group? Imagine all the cool props he could bring to the table. How cool would that be? Seriously though, his remarks are intelligent and to the point. He would make a great addition to any game

Chriss Wissel – WerePlatypus; He ALWAYS has a good point, no matter what he comments on. It’s like, when I read a thread and get to his post, I find all the missing answers. His insight into the game would be a very valuable asset.

Tiger Lily; There just ain’t enough girls that love this hobby. Not only would one more girl be welcome at my table, but I think she (as a associate director at a domestic violence & sexual assault organisation) would bring a humane aspect to game play that just a bunch of guys couldn’t bring. You rock girl!

I realise I left out many other interesting posters that would surely have no problem making the cut. I specifically left out all the people that work for Dungeon, as I thought many would choose them.

Ultradan

Wow! Thanks! (I'm blushing now...)

My 6:

1.) Farewell2Kings
2.) Ultradan
3.) GreatGreenGod
4.) Gavgoyle
5.) Aberzombie
6.) Chris Wissel - WerePlatypus

If I could pick from the "knowne" staff/contributors
1.) Erik Mona
2.) James Jacobs
3.) Rich Burlew (OotS OotS!!!)
4.) Vic Wertz
5.) James Sutter
6.) Jeremy Walker

Well, your SOL today, Ultradan. Today I've been prossessing hundreds and hundreds of Rabdotus mooreanus shells...terrestrial snails. Nothing exotic about today. :P Although, I could always show you my Mammoth bone. It's a great ice-breaker at parties (both as a pun and double entendre!)

Oh, and yeah, Lilith, Tiger Lily, and Mesheda are the kick-ass trinity of Gamer Grrls!

So, are we Cuthbert's Angels, or something? ;-)

Thanks, Ultradan! If you ever happen to be somewhere between Indianapolis, IN, and Louisville, KY, you're welcome at the table!

Wow, I'm flattered to be included in some of your choices of six.

It would be so tough to pick just six, because I thoroughly enjoy the conversations and these boards, as so many of you would be great additions to anyone's gaming table.

If I was forced to pick six...well, I would hate to hurt anyone's feelings who picked me and I didn't pick them in return (Wow, is that a grade school emotion resurfacing or what??)

Okay--my rules--all my current players went away and I'd have to pick six for all the D&D games I'm involved in. That gave me 18 choices and I still couldn't pick everybody!! Another rule--no Paizo staff...(they can't play regularly enough because they have deadlines and stuff)

For my biweekly GH 576 campaign that I DM:
Steve Greer
Koldoon
Wereplatypus
Dryder
GGG
Aberzombie
Drunken Nomad

For my weekly Wednesday night SCAP game that I DM:
Ultradan
Lilith
Stebehil
The Jade
Medesha
Jeremy MacDonald
Fake Healer

For the bi-weekly FR campaign that I play in:
Sexigolem
Saern
Gavgoyle
ASEO
Richard Pett
Gavgoyle
Marc Chin

(edit)
I just found another six or seven that would be great players based on their G-Harmony personality profile, but I just have to stop. I was never good at picking on the playground either, I found something I liked about almost everyone.

I plan on going to GenCon in 2007--how about we plan a special game for Paizo messageboard regulars? Maybe we can con James Jacobs and Erik Mona to run some adventures for us.

Sovereign Court

KnightErrantJR
GGG
Saern
Celric
Ultradan
Sexigolem

I really don't want to just pick six as there are so many good posters here but I do want to remedy the fact that Scylla has not been mentioned and he's an individual who I have repeatedly found myself disagreeing with and yet who has very much earned my respect as a thoughtful poster.

That is just very difficult...

The werecabbages would win, of course, since I've worked with them all.

But I'd also love to play in a game with Mike McArtor and Medesha...

And I think Jeremy Walker must be a hoot in a game... his character in Eric's campaign is a hoot, and frankly any player willing to devote ten pages to character history needs to be in my game - I'm lucky to get a paragraph.

So, no official six - it's obvious that I'm just too indecisive.

This is a great question. I have to say after reading it I wish I had posted it!

Since, I am posting I guess I should make a list.

- Dithering Fool
- drunken_nomad
- Gavgoyle - he didn't pick me, though :(
- Byron Zibeck
- Sebastian
- Black Dougal

Too many of you have impressed me to no end. It would be easier for me to mention who I wouldn't like to play with... but that would only number three who don't seem to care for my opinions all that much.

I will say that the first name to enter my mind was a very popular choice, judging from the other posts. Then came the second name, then a third... etc. But to limit it to six? Can't be done. Anyone who truly loves the game and has a great sense of humor is welcome at my table.

Perfectly put, as always. I was browsing some of the other posts and found another half dozen people whose responses to certain questions and comments showed that they're just the type of people who would be great to have in a gaming group.

Well, since you put me down twice, I guess I could be magnanimous and give up one of my seats at your FR game. Or are you makin' some kinda crack about the size of my ass?

C'mon, pally, put 'em up! Put 'em up! ;-)

LOL....too much typing and this time around --too much thinking as well....

Seriously--I think it's actually tougher to judge people to see if they might be suitable gamers from their postings, as I think it's sometimes easier to talk about D&D than it is to be a good player in a real game. I think I'm probably in that category.

However, one of the reasons I've made Paizo one of the only Internet forums that I read and contribute to regularly is because even the disagreements on this site have been generally civil and intellectually stimulating.

Don't worry, we'll just go smoke under the bleachers.

I am relatively new to this board, but as has already been said over and over, I am so impressed by the civility, creativeness, general knowledge, and overall thought provoking quality of most of the posts on this website. I have read so many different people's take on so many different issues, that I have cought myself MANY a time saying...wow that sounds like a fun person to play with! Unfortunately I too think that 6 is way to small a list, as I have already "mentally flagged" a couple DOZEN people i wouldn't mind sharing a gaming table with.
Unfortunately for me, I live on the other side of the world from most of you, in the Middle East...should ANY of you be passing through Dubai, feel free to let me know =p. The only one here is Kyr (who i have spoken with on the phone, but we just haven't been able to get together for a game yet...one day).
Having said that, I hope i'll be forgiven for singling out a few people specifically (though by all means this list is NOT exhaustive by any stretch of the imagination):
Ultradan
F2K
GGD
Kyr
Saern
Sexi Golem
and many many more =p

Be safe all.

First off, thanks to those that picked me, for those of you that didn't................................... also a good call, my characters have a habit of dying too fast anyway.

My pick

Ultradan
F2K
Kight errant Ur

These are the co-DM's

Everyone else, make a character.

The Exchange

Here we go. In a perfect world, I would be able to game like 5 days a week and my list would include all you guys on rotation but if I had to pick.....

GGG
Ultradan
Farewell2kings
Lilith
Medesha
Sexigolem

with 3 others on stand-by/pinch-hitters.
Saern
Gavgoyle
ASEO

Thanks F2K for the inclusion.....I know I'm still a relatively new poster and the inclusion means alot.

There was already another interesting thread that took a similar turn:
http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/dnd/general/dDTeachingEnglish

Seems that you would have to propose regional "pick your 6".

As a side note: after some of my less diplomatic postings here I would volunteer for playing a monster. :p

Greetings,
Guenther

I just remembered Waterdhavian Flapjack--I don't think he's posted in a while and he and I had some great discussions late last year. I think there's a core group of about 40-50 regulars who we all would love to game with. They include all those who are smoking behind the bleachers ;] I probably got included so many times because I never hesitate to drop my opinion in on a subject, welcomed or not. It's one of my shortcomings.

Hi there Waldbröhler, ;-)

does that illustrous group include non smokers?
I never heard that expression!

Hmmm... it's funny how right now I'm going through this strange process of trying to imagine what it would be like playing with all these people I know through their words and their avatar...

The group I game with now has been going strong for over five years and it's funny... that started as a random post on a local gaming store message board. I didn't know any of them from Adam and now we're damn close.

That being the case I've never had the opportunity nor the luxury to pick an "All Star Table" but if I did here goes:

1. Jesus
2. Gary Gygax
3. Gandhi
4. Chuck Norris
5. Stephen Hawking
6. Bill Gates

Now if I had to pick from the boards I'd have to say that it would be even tougher. There are so many creative minds, so many intriguing personalities, that I wouldn't want to limit it.

But if I could get to GenCon I'd second the idea about a Paizo messageboard meet & greet and roleplaying experience - that would totally rock.

On a similar note I wonder who would want whom to be their DM?

Oh my ... too many great, intelligent posters here to pick. It would be cool you meet you folks at a Gen Con sometime.

Thanks Jeremy, it's been a lousy weekend and I really appreciate you saying that. Your posts have definitely made me think and earned my respect as well.

Liberty's Edge

As I am sure it would be fun to have every one of you guys at my table once a while, I don't want to pick six to have as as players but those guys which I would love to join as a player while they're DMing:

F2K - I am pretty sure, he works out some really cool backgrounds and his campaigns can be very political. And btw - he's been mentioned so often here, that I don't dare NOT TO! ;)

Steve Greer - Well, I KNOW, he gives his players shocking moments and knows how to scare them!

GGG - But I am so sure he has absolutely no time DMing, because he's constantly writing, writing, writing... ;)

James Jacobs - Because I would love to have a good Cthulhu-DM at least once in my life! All the others had been catastrophies so far!

Onrie - "Our little brother" here on the boards. Would be great to attend a kind of "Next Generation D&D" type of game!

Greg Vaughn - The "Wrath of the Abyss" trilogy had been too cool and it would be nice to have the writer of Tammeraut's Fate DMing it for me!

That's just six out of all the messageboard visitors. Let me say, that I think this is a great community which helped me in a lot of ways already (even gave me the chance of getting published...) and if I have a problem with a game, the answers of all of you here on the Paizo-Boards are what I am looking forward to! I love "being" here and as well being part of it! Thanx to you all!!!

- TOM

Hum, all interesting responses...especially the ones who feel left out. We need more data points though. If you haven't sounded off yet - let's hear more of who you perceive are the best people on this message board for your games.

Even though I'm new here, or maybe especially that I'm new here, I like most of you guys. Especially the old bastards like me. Six is too few and too silly for the best message board dealing with this hobby/affliction. I'll try and see ya'll at GenCon. Thanks for everything!

Sovereign Court

Maybe the thread should be rewritten as "Pick Your 66" instead of six.

If you like D&D enough that you're willing to post here regularly and discuss ways to play the game better and make it more fun for you and your players (if you're a DM)--well, that already is a pretty big qualifier for being someone I'd want to game with. So...just picking six is too hard--I think anyone who has taken the time to get involved in serious game-improving discussions probably has a lot of redeeming features as a gamer or DM.

Of course, in a perfect world, we'd have those Star Trek matter things to create anything we needed. As a result, there would be no want, no need for jobs, and we could spend all of our time travelling around the country gaming in various campaigns and tournaments. Hmmm...What if Gamers Ruled the World? Sounds like a good thread idea.

This really made me laugh! Thanks, Timault! My mind just reels thinking about what class everyone would take. Will Gandhi and Steven Hawking argue about who gets to play a barbarian and who gets to play a rogue? Would Jesus be a druid or a sorcerer? I think that Bill Gates would be a Priest of Zilchus...

1. Jesus would ALWAYS roll natural 20s.

2. Gary Gygax would ALWAYS complain about the third edition.

3. Gandhi would ALWAYS refuse to take part in any encounter that involves sword-swinging or offensive spells.

4. Chuck Norris would ALWAYS get angry at Ghandi for not fighting and beat the hell out of him.

5. Stephen Hawking would ALWAYS successfully be able to explain how his character could theoretically still hit his opponent even by rolling a natural 1.

6. Bill Gates would ALWAYS find a way to end up with a zillion gold pieces by the time he reaches 2nd level.

I never even figured which characters they would play, I was thinking about their personalities around the table...

Jesus would always be the caring gamer that bends over backwards to help his friends. Also, no game would be cancelled due to illness. Lastly, he could turn water into Mountain Dew, or wine, or beer, or club soda...

Gygax would be a great roleplayer, always developing his character and challenging the rest of us to hone our roleplaying skills. Plus, it's pretty sweet bragging rights to claim Gygax as a player in my game.

Gandhi would also follow in Jesus' example (as he did in life) and care for everyone else. You would never have to fight him for the Cheet-o's.

Chuck would be able to show us all what various weapons and martial art techniques would look like as he roundhouse kicks LARP'ers for effect and our ammusement.

Stephen Hawking of course would be able to explain to us in both the macro and micro levels the exact physics of how magic works in relation to contemporary string theory.

Bill Gates is the rich guy (who according to The Onion increased his charisma score to 20) who would be able to buy all the coolest game aids and hook all of us up with the latest in virtual reality technology in order to further enhance our gaming experience.
