I first have to say that I absolutely love this article, it is just what I have been looking for. I do have some questions about the feats that are presented. First, with the Haft Strike feet, could you attack with the blade of the weapons at a 10ft reach and then attack an adjacent foe? To avoid powergamers I am assuming you could not attack a foe at 10ft with the blade, then attack with at 10ft with the haft. Also, can Haft Strike and Shorten Grip be used at the same time?
If Haft Strike can be used against an adjacent foe while attacking at range, can it be used in conjunction with Long Strike (it wouldn't seem likely based on the description, but figured I would ask.) Finally, Shorten Grip, are their any prerequisites for it, I would expect at least a different base attack bonusm but none are listed. (seems a little powerful to not have a BAB requirement.
As I said though, great work. I always wanted to see polearms used more in DnD. You will definately see it more with some of my characters. Just picture your mage with Spinning defense while using his wizards staff.

Because the feats do not specifically prohibit the feats being used in combination, I would allow it. I could imagine an extremely dextrous fighter, particularly, doing things like thrusting the weapon forward, then flipping it back to strike with the haft....
This would of course mean that the number of actual blows would exceed that in a full-round attack (but by the mechanics, we would only resolve the appropriate number with a d20 roll).
Of course, maybe someone with more specific knowledge can comment.

I've fought with multiple types of polearms in real life (i'm not that great). It is certainly possible to hit someone at range and still be able to strike someone with the haft. I have a friend who is extremely good with pikes and he can do some pretty amazing tricks. So I would allow it, just make sure that their attacks don't exceed their max for the round.

Haft Strike does not alter the fact that the weapon has reach. If you strike with the haft, you must use the reach given by the weapon. However, in combination with Shorten Grip, you could use it to strike an opponent 10 ft. away and then haft strike the adjacent foe (albeit with a -4 penalty on the roll).
Glad to hear you like the article, it was a fun one for us to put together. It involved the Dragon staff sitting around one night watching a stack of kung fu movies and dreaming up cool things to do with a pole arm. Unfortunately, we could not come up with a feat that allowed you to knock out someone's teeth. (bonus points if you can name the kung fu movie that special move is from.. one hint.. wolves).

Thank you! Thank you everybody! No, please, hold your applause! I humbly accept these 8 bonus points (which are redeemable for a piece of string), and just want to thank the people that made this all possible. First, thanks to Mr. Jason Buhlmahn for replying to this thread and holding the contest. Second, thanks to Mr. Erik Mona for chiming in on this one. Finally, thanks to salcor for starting this thread, and to everyone else that participated. You’re all great. I really mean that. (Holds up 8 bonus points certificate and the piece of thread that he may redeem them for. Humbly bows amidst thundering applause and revelry before exiting from stage right).
