Is there a black hole in the submissions room at Paizo?

The nomad produces a Decanter of Endless Rum and puts a shot down in front of the Band of Five. Then, reaching into the cool leather Robe of Very Useful Items, he brings forth a chilled sixer of Cokes to wash down the stout beverage.

"Cheers", he hiccups. "I still have heard nothing. Maybe sunspots are jumbling communications with the patron, or maybe it's the rum. Did someone say they got a 'go'"?

The Las Vegas Assassin meekly bows his head in obeiscence as the all-powerful-one on high pronounces judgement upon his works. The first pronouncement causes him to cringe, but he nods his head in humility, accepting the criticisms bravely. The second pronouncement causes the Assassin of Las Vegas to lift his head hopefully.

He stands and bows to the all-powerful-one and scurries off to carry out the orders from on high. He has a slight swagger in his step and begins whistling a nameless tune as ideas flood though his mind and disappears into the shadows.

You guys rock.

Somebody set up this 'Community Storytime' thread...with all the rules (1st level, two-paragraph limit, no half-elemental templates, whatever) and let's see what happens.

The '3 word only' thread over on the Off-Topic Discussions board is kind of fun too, if you wanna play over there. Though Ronnie James Dio gets caught with some underaged cheese and a pack of Skittles in that epic saga.

So I got a "No thank you" on one adventure in the first batch right after Dungeon's big shakeout meeting, but I haven't heard anything on my second proposal yet - maybe that's a god thing. I guess I can always track Jeremy down at GENCON and get an update. Anyone else planning on being there? Maybe I'll see you in the "Writing for Dungeon" seminar.

Contributor

Congrats, Steve. :)

Contributor

Thanks, Zherog. It's just a resubmit with changes, but I guess with so many "no thank you's" lately, that's something to celebrate! Baby steps...

Contributor

Well, "resubmit with changes" is certainly a heck of a lot better than "no thanks." :)

Hey, i'm with zherog on this one... still better than "no thanks"

Yeah, I got "resubmit with changes" too (along with a bucklet load of "No thanks", "Forget it", "What do you take me for?" and strangely enough even one "A liquidation squad has been dispatched to your location you commie/mutant/traitor" :) ).

I did learn one thing though, apparently they aren't interested in "Backdrops" right now. Not sure if anyone else has touched on this but I thought I would mention it.

Hal -

It's good to know, and frankly I'm not surprised... backdrops take up a lot of space, and they seem to be short on that right now with the adventure path. Either that or they have a really good line up already!

Anyway, thanks for the tip.

So what about things on the Dragon side? What's a reasonable expectation over there for hearing back on queries and/or submissions?

I have one outstanding submission I'd love to hear back on. Jason B. was kind enough to confirm for me that he received it, so I don't have to worry about it bouncing around in cyber space. That's certainly a relief. But to actually hear the status would be great - especially if that status is, "We love it!" :)

I also have some queries that I have yet to hear back on. One set of queries was attached to the submission I talked about above, and had some follow up ideas. I can understand not hearing back about those ideas until the article's fate has been decided. The others, though, were "normal" run of the mill types. One query goes back to June 20th, and the other goes back to May 24th. Should I have heard back from either of these by now? Am I just being impatient?

More generally, what's the typical "turn around" time on the Dragon side for a query or a submission? We know that it's around 3 months of so for Dungeon, and having a similar time estimate for Dragon may help some of impatient writers. :)

Dragon's turn around time for queries is much faster. I think my longest wait time to hear on a Dragon query was just over 2 months.

Dungeon has kept me waiting to hear on a query for far longer, I think my longest was just under 7 months. I also have several critical threats that have been waiting for just over six months.

I just do my best to be patient. Six months is a telling marker though, and I will probably send a friendly "just making sure these aren't lost in cyberspace" note to Jeremy for the Critical Threats in the near future.

Contributor

I'm certain nobody's going to hear anything from Jason B. (me included) until at least mid-September. Thanks to the giant time-sucking void that is GenCon and the D&D open.

It varies considerably, depending upon the time of year, the needs of the editor ("an interesting idea, perfect for that issue we're planning six months from now...")and numerous other factors. I was recently asked for an outline for something I originally queried back in January. On the other hand I was once given a deadline of less then a week.

The guidelines say they'll reply within 12 weeks so I usually send in an email about that time if I haven't heard back. I also, if need be, send follow up emails if I don't hear back on the first one :).

On the subject of queries specifically, I tend to pitch a lot all at once, and then stagger the resulting deadlines out over a couple of months. It usually takes at least a month to hear back on feature queries, and sometimes quite a bit longer.

So, the desert assassin and a scottish MacLean imp both got a Sending spell and then they 'ported out. Who's left? An invisible fungus, a moon-worshipping/fearing platypi, and a green dragon that splatted onto the floor in a heap from 'hanging' too long. I got too nervous yesterday and sent the Gatekeeper a missive, knowing full well he is packing for the Fall Fest but wanting to verify that I am not floating alone on the Astral Plane.

I sent my missive on Tuesday. No reply yet.

Okay, new guy here. As I understand from what I am reading on these boards, it's taking Dungeon around three months to get through any queries. So if I submitted in the middle of July, my expectation should be to hear from them around the middle of October?

The WerePlatypus sends news. He quiety slipped out the back door after receiving his answers, and forgot to mention it to the others that continue to wait. He sends his regrets, and wishes those that remain the best of luck.

Oh no. . . a full moon!

"Oh what's this? A missive? No, in fact its two! Ah ha! I seem to have kicked butt in the realm of fairy-tales and board games though all trips to grandma's house are off for now. But lo, it says they want more information and a unique angle to boot! It is time write once more."

OK, who brought that damned Mirror of Opposition in here?!

Dante, your guess as as good as anybody's in here, but that's probably as close an estimate as any.

I'd bet November, though I certainly hope to hear earlier.

Dante,

The most official thing I've heard was: "sometime after GenCon", although no year was given.

I was going to comment on your slight resemblance to Steve (iconically anyhow) though I think your nose might be a bit narrower and you eyes less dark. Other than that you both have winning smiles. Who does your sewing?

In the past, I've sent submissions to dungeon@paizo, but recently, I sent a batch to gatekeeper@paizo, per the Tips for Contributors thread (or one of those). I just realized that James Sutter was an intern, and may not be working there anymore/much longer. . . is gatekeeper@paizo still preffered, or should they go the dungeon@paizo?

Thanks.

gatekeeper@paizo.com still works. So does dungeon@paizo.com.

Interesting. "Old Man Katan", "A Hot Day in L'Trel" and "Courier Service" were some of my favourite adventures in Dungeon and ones which I stole several ideas from for use in my own games (I've only ever run one module and it didn't work out... but I steal plenty of material from them).

I found this as well. Especially with a Hot Day in L'Trel. As it stands it probabkly does not work with any specific campaign becuase ea mahor city has to be burned down and if your going to burn down a major city in your campaign then its a good idea to tailor the adventure to that city. But conceptually the idea was brilliant. I liked much of the time line material as well since it gives a good idea on how this plays out. After this one just has to take the material and make it their own before burning down WaterDeep or where ever.

My proposal didn't make it either. It's back to the drawing board for me.

James Sutter's still here (and full time now!), but I have gotten bounced around a bit. :) Jeremy's once again the first line of defense against an overflowing slush pile, but if you have any issues with shipments or subscriptions, I've got your back....

Dejected, the nomad gathers his things and slumps out of the dark room into the bright afternoon. The offerings of pie and rum remain on the water clock for the man on high.

Well, 2 of my subs just got shot down. And one is lost in transmission. The man says to resend it for the next go-around. The band of five had two get rewrites and no straight-out acceptance. CRUD!

The one thing I did learn is that they have had their fill of half- whatever based BBEGuys. So, scrap all those proposals guys! Luckily, the 3 I have in for this next meeting have none (except a genasi cleric in one of them, maybe that will be overlooked).

drunken_nomad wrote:

The Band of Five are gonna keep at it though, so keep your hipflask ready.

For me, my fellow wereplatypi thalls have already started to dig trenches and pull down trees for an extended siege in the next round. My warriors are primed . . . quacking and grunting and laying strange mammal eggs.

Good luck to all. :)

Ah yes, the Siege on Renton WA, Mark VIII! I'm bringing the massive stereo system to blast them Noriega-style. Though I'm not playing ACDC or almighty Sabbath tracks....NO! This time it's all Steve Lawrence and Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute tunes. With repeated listenings of "Party all the Time", by Eddie Murphy! TAKE THAT!

LOL :)

Was there a recent submissions meeting? I'm still waiting on a couple adventure queries from June an July. Last I heard the next meeting wasn't going to happen til after Gen Con.

Hunter, Jeremy was just finishing getting back to people (finally!) from the last meeting. No new meetings yet (as far as we've heard).

Good to know, thanks Mr. Greer.

On another note, congrats to James! I should be addressing future queries to Mr. Walker?

I have finished writing responses to the final few people who were waiting, so all the adventure queries from the last meeting have finally been cleared off my desk. As always, it took longer than I would have liked.

One note for everyone: while it’s fine to send proposals and submissions to the gatekeeper account, please send emails that have questions or are inquiring about the status of a proposal to the dungeon account, or to me directly. Oftentimes I won't read over all the emails in the gatekeeper account until I am ready to start working on the submissions themselves. So if you have an issue that you want me to address right away, please send it to dungoen or to my email account.

Finally, to the "Band of Five" I have only this to say: Many are called, but few are chosen. Keep at it!

It's time to dust off this thread and see what is going on now. If I am looking at it correctly, June 10th was the last cutoff date...so assuming everything is hunkydory over in Renton, three months would make the next cutoff Sept 10th. So, if you guys have anything you want to be evaluated... GET IN SENT IN! Skip work, call in sick to school, tell the kids to take the 20$ and go down to chuck e cheese...and lock yerself in front of the compy and write. This time I have six stories in there, one is a resend from the last go around that got lost. Of course, GenCon prolly set everything back a little bit, but still...the deadline is coming quick. And now, a quote from my sponsor, RJD.

One day, in the year of the fox
Came a time remembered well,
When the strong young man of the rising sun
Heard the tolling of the great black bell.
One day in the year of the fox,
When the bell began to ring,
It meant the time had come for one to go
To the temple of the king.

Given that my thesis is due in on the 12th I suspect that I'm going to miss this deadline too, unless Dungeon is after scenarios about biotech startups!

Yes. My spider senses have been tingling. Perhaps we'll see the results of the implementation of this new fangled system for reviewing and responding to submission proposals?

I have only 3 in the pile this time. Still working on thier request for a "resubmit with changes and a City of Adventure article..."

My first query was sent in last week. We'll see how it goes...

Question for all you guys: How do you send in a "query" for campaign workbook articles? I am ready to start trying to get into the mags, and have an idea for a critical threat, but read the submissons guidelines which state that you don't send in a query for CW articles. So how do you tell them what you want to write?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

WaterdhavianFlapjack

For Campaign Workbooks, you can just send in the completed article rather than going through the query process.

Thanks. One more question: What about Class Acts? Do you have to send in a query, or can you just send in the completed article?

So, is there any news on how the new submission meeting process is going?

The news is nothing has gone forward on this yet. We've been in panic-mode since getting back from Gen Con, getting issue 128 of Dungeon out the door. At this point, I'm not sure when we'll be able to get back on dealing with submissions, but it certainly won't be until next week at the earliest.

Again, thanks for being patient with the process. Just keep in mind that editing the magazine generally takes 3 weeks a month, leaving about 1 week for everything else we need to do (including submission meetings). We'll get there... eventually.
