Thanks for confirming, Jeremy. Two questions...
1) Has there been any progress towards having the meeting more often?
2) What's the process for Campaign Workbooks? I've tossed the question out a few times, but I don't recall seeing a reply anywhere. Do those go through a meeting as well? Do "acceptance" and "rejection" e-mails get sent?
Thanks. :)

They change each month. Things like Gen Con and the Christmas break cause them to shift around, as does conflicts with Dragon deadlines and all sorts of other things. Although it seems to me that the third week of each month is usually the most frantic...

I've got a query in as well, but missed the cut off date that was early in September. (Mine was submitted September 13 via e-mail and I heard from Jeremy I missed by a few days. Such is life.) I had hoped to hear from them early this month as they were attempting to streamline the process, but deadlines have a way of sitting on you so you cannot ignore them. This I understand, so I wait.
In the meantime, I'm entertaining friends with playtesting the adventure, which pointed out some weaknesses in my text and the final encounter. Fun, fun!

Okay, am I doing something wrong here? Back on the 10th of July, I submitted a query. I waited patiently as the boards recommend I do. On the 20th of October, one hundred days later, I sent an email asking what was up and if anyone had seen, read or psychicly felt my query. Today is November 2nd and I still haven't heard anything. Is this normal? Should I do something else? I need some closure, man!!

Dante -
At last report, Jeremy still had to send responses to about half of the people who had submitted queries between the end of June and September 9th. I am also still waiting. No, this is not unusual.
I wish I could say you can count on an answer soon, but the editors have about one week that is not deadline driven every month, during which submission meetings happen and notifications to folks about their queries can be sent. I'm sure Jeremy is doing everything he can to get our responses to us.
- Ashavan
PS - Yes, it tears my gut up too. But until you get a no, a yes is still a possibility. Don't stop writing. Keep submitting - having more material on the editors' desks is your only real defence against the rejection when/if it comes.

Great advice, Ashavan. Dante, just keep track of what you sent out and move on to the next project.
The good thing about Paizo is that they are usually pretty fast at responding to the short queries, so they can keep their writers writing. I generally get responses on my lists of possible campaign workbook and ecology ideas within a few weeks.
BTW, I currently have about 10 submissions or proposals in the queues at Dungeon and at Dragon, though none are older than about 10 weeks. This isn't unusual or particulary annoying.

Campaign Workbooks tend to get gathered in, read, sorted by section, and then put in a big pile for me to sort through when I need to pull them to put in the next issue. There is no formal meeting for that, it's basically just up to me (although the other editors can veto my choices, of course). And then, every once in awhile, I will go through them and pull out the ones that have been in the pile for too long and formally reject them. But (unfortunately) that is pretty rare.
As for the latest round of adventure proposals, the next issue is shipping out on Monday (to the printer) so I should be able to get back on the reply shtick next week.

Nope. Nothing here yet. I almost have a new proposal ready to go in for this batch...and I think this will be my only one for this round. (Too much r/l invading my writing time). If it goes according to plan, Dec 8th should be the next cutoff date, give or take. So, that leaves about 4 weeks to put anything new into the pot for this round.

Waiting on a triple query from August 1. I've followed up a couple times, just to see how it was doing.
The bummer about this one is that I'm no longer as eager to put it together. Sometimes it's hard to capture that "Oh yeah!" that made you submit the query in the first place — there's other bright, shiny things to work on that distract me from the older material.

Oh, and does anyone know what they do with the articles they've accepted but haven't sent out a contract for? How likely are they to print those somewhere later down the line?
It depends on the article and schedule. I have a Backdrop that is sitting on Jeremy's desk that will propably continue to sit there at least until the Age of Worms is over. Heh - assuming we survive it! Likewise I have an adventure sitting with Dungeon that might see print sometime after the Summer, because at the time I sent the manuscript (April I think) there was a post (I believe James Jacobs on EN Wolrd) saying they were backed up with adventures at least until next (2006) May. Also a greenlight only means it has about a 75% chance of being printed (much better than the 10-15% it has of getting accepted), but still.
That said, a friend of mine on these boards had a Campaign Workbook article appear in print before Paizo even sent him the contract (I assume someone just forgot to). Likewise if you submit something that conveniently fills a sudden hole in the magazine's schedule you might show up in print that much quicker. So you never know.
There is a more formal method of picking out Adventures in Dungeon (I would assume Features are handled the same way in Dragon) and therefore more feedback shows up on these boards while shorter articles like Campaign Workbooks and Class Acts sit in a huge pile (with Zerog's stuff on the bottom) on the responsible editor's desk. When an editor needs something he filters through the pile picks stuff based on need and like, with little in the way of response either positive or negative to the author (mainly for lack of time on the staff's part).
Since the holidays are upon us I have the feeling that if you don't hear anything in the next two weeks you won't hear anything until early next year (see the very first few posts on this thread).
Hope that helps,
GGG
By the way, in regards to your thread/post asking if you can use the new stat block format I know Green Ronin does so I think you're cool.

Typically you SHOULD see a contract for an article about a month, a month and a half before the magazine with your article in it appears in stores.

I think there are two kinds of people when it comes to ideas:

2. Those who pile their ideas into a mound and indulgently swim around like Scrooge McDuck.

My longest wait so far, from first submission to eventual print, was 30 months (for "Glimmerpane"). I've currently got about eight Campaign Workbook articles somewhere in the depths of Paizo, and I'm planning to do a few more in the next few weeks.
I've found that the real killer of articles is the dreaded, "new approach" (an aberration if I ever saw one :) ). Many an article has patiently waited to make its way to print only to fall prey to this hideous beast.

So, I've been working on this new proposal and I finally send it in last night about 2 AM and then when I look in the light of day today...I notice that I have included about 5 uses of the "will ****" verb tense in the proposal...JEEZ! I can't even follow my own rule for eliminating those pesky passive verbs!
And, totally off-topic, it was a blast to be able to quote Mr Baur in my previous post. He sent me my first rejection letter waaaaaaay back in 1990-91 when he was intern-ing under Kim Mohan at Dragon, reading the slush of short fiction. I never got to thank you for those actual personal notes you added to the form letter.
And, Chris, I am a swimmer too. I know I have lost hundreds of ideas by not keeping some sort of notepad handy. Does that mean I am going to start now? Heck no!

Good point.
This has happened to every article I've sent to Dragon so far - I had an outline accepted and wrote an ecology of hags before the relaunch, when I was asked to split it into seperate articles. I wrote a seperate ecology of night hags, re-wrote it based on feedback about a new format, and submitted it only to find that the editor had given up on me and written a night hag ecology himself. Very similar story with a green hag ecology - green light on the outline, but no thanks on the submission because the editor had already written a green hag ecology. I'm currently waiting on an ecology outline which was re-written to match the new ecology format, and on three class acts, which will have to be re-written (if the find they want them) because of changes in the class acts format.
Hopefully they'll give me points for persistence.
Dungeon seems to have stabalized since the relaunch - haven't had this issue with them.

Hey Steve. Long time, no posts. I guess congratulations are in order, are you a proud pappa assassin? Anyway, there are still a few from the September 8th cutoff that have not heard about their proposals (including me). And, as far as I can tell, December 8th (give or take a couple of days) is the new cutoff date, Chris, you still have about two weeks to get those sent in!

Dungeon seems to have stabalized since the relaunch - haven't had this issue with them.
That's an accurate assessment. After a long period where the magazine seemed to switch formats (and editors) every year or so, I think we've finally hit upon a format for Dungeon that is more or less perfect, and that won't see major changes as long as I'm associated with the magazine (which I hope to be a good long while). That process took a good year or so of putting my ear to the train tracks and getting the lay of the land before making some big decisions. We've had 11 months of sustained subscriber growth on the magazine, so it's not just the staff that likes the current format.
Dragon is still somewhat fluid, and wasn't helped by the scatter-shot relaunch in #323. We're only now (with the revised Class Acts format and new features like the Demonomicon, Cities of the Realms, and Core Beliefs) getting that magazine where it needs to be, so "the dreaded new approach" is still something of a potential danger to contributors over there.
But you guys are safe on the Dungeon side. The only thing you need to deal with is the fact that we are currently woefully understaffed and don't have as much time as we need to work on things that aren't directly involved in building the issue at hand.
In order to combat this, the staff has scheduled the magazine's adventure content way in advance. For the first time in the magazine's history, I can point to an issue eight months from now and reliably tell you what adventures are slated to appear. That wasn't ever the case (to my knowledge) before about two years ago, and consequently the churn of submissions went a lot faster.
My impression of the magazine before I became its editor was that the content was planned about two or three issues in advance, and when a given issue was finished, the editor had to frantically scan the submission pile in order to decide what adventure to run in two or three months. This often led to running what was available "on hand," and didn't lead to significant stockpiling of good adventures. That's not an indictment of the magazine's former editors--they usually worked as one-man teams and faced bimonthly (rather than monthly) frequency, so the magazine was just a different beast back then.
I'm not at all pleased with the response rate we're managing at present, but we are doing the best we can under a rather unfortunate set of circumstances. Each month of profitability makes it more likely that we will be able to draft the staff help that we need, and 11 months of sustained growth is nothing to scoff at, but we haven't hit the magic number that will allow us to afford another employee yet, and until then I'm afraid long delays are going to be the order of the day.
On this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the patience of Dungeon's able contributors. You are much appreciated around our office, believe me.

Just a quick question: does the dragon@paizo.com email adress still work or is it completely defunct (and if so, for how long now)?
Both of those emails (dragon@paizo.com and dungeon@paizo.com) still work fine, and remain the prefered emails for authors to send proposals to for either magazine.
