What I'd like to see

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

I'd like to see any of the following articles:

1.) More epic-level articles. Anything epic-level would be appreciated. WOTC has started incorporating a little epic-level content in many of its recent books, so hopefully Dragon will follow this trend. I don't know the number of people who run or play in epic-level campaigns, but I see alot of posts on other messageboards desiring more epic content.

2.) More planar content. I'd like to see articles similar to the planar cities articles (N'gati, Balefire), but pertaining to perhaps a layer of the Abyss, or a region of Limbo. The Manual of the Planes left many possible hooks open to further exploration.

3.) Compiliation lists. It would be nice for DMs to be able to reference an article that lists all the monsters from official products that can be summoned via a summon monster or summon nature's ally spell. Same goes for spells that can be made permanent. I'm sure other compilation lists could be beneficial.

Thanks for requesting the feedback!

I love that idea!

Liberty's Edge

Hi there! Again - great Site!!!

What I want to see in Dragon?! Ok, here it is:

1) ITEM TOKENS
This would be so cool. Two years ago I started to give my players little pics of the items they find. So they get a better feel for it. The loved it from the beginning and we had now more "double-items" in the group, because someone lent an item to another player and suddenly it appeared on both character-sheets. After a while we couldn't recap if both had a potion of X or if there had been only one...
I also had a player who wouldn't give away his +1longsword in order to replace it with a +3longsword!!! Why? He loved the picture of the +1sword and thought it more fitting to his pc...
So, Item Tokens would be really great! (like the monster tokens you had once!)

2) SHEETs
Monster sheets, Combat sheets, NPC sheets, etc... to copy and use during game!

3) An article about how to fight monsters when you have no weapons! What kind of things could help you, when you are surprised during a big festival and happen to be without armor and weapons... I ask for this, because as a player I came two times into such a situation and we all had a hard time to cope with the monsters attacking us... Just want to know if there is more to this topiv than the chair, table, chandellier, etc...

So, that's all for now! Keep up your wonderfull work on the magazine!!!

Heres some of mine.

1) Eberron stuff (kinda like the FRs one but with spells, monsters, feats, magic items, and Prcs that fit the setting).

2) Yes more epic stuff (only got to play in two epic games and in pot we started there not as fun as getting there but).

3) More feats, spells, and magic items for spellcasters (as well as some for the none spellcasting classes).

4) More DM stuff in dragon (at least a small part still in the mag for DMs).

Thats it for now.

Another thing I'd like to see that I left off my earlier post is a definitive article on advancing monsters. For instance, the rules are unclear whether spell resistance, damage reduction, and caster level for spell-like abilities increases as a monster advances by Hit Dice.

What I would like to see is this:

PSIONICS: A monthly psionic article, due to WotC's infrequent integration of psionics into D&D's core for those of us who love psionics and would like to see more and more of it. New feats, prestige classes, psionic powers, psionic monsters, psionic items, and even the occasional fluff material for those with psionic campaigns or would like to include psionics into their games.

And another thing I'd like to see is CLASS ACTS covering the other core classes besides the Player's Handbook normal 11. In the new Class Acts series, I would like to see articles on the following classes published by WotC:

---Psion, Psychic Warrior, Soulknife, Wilder (Expanded Psionics Handbook)
---Samurai, Shaman, Shugenja, Sohei, Wu Jen (Oriental Adventures)
---Healer, Marshal, Warmage (Minatiure's Handbook)
---Hexblade, Samurai, Swashbuckler (Complete Warrior)
---Favored Soul, Shugenja, Spirit Shaman (Complete Divine)
---Erudite, Ninja, Urban Druid, Sha'ir (pages of Dragon)

I sure would also love to see more articles on Oriental Adventures. Not everyone wants to buy AEG's Legend of the Five Rings d20 to use in their OA games. Very few do.

I agree it might be nice once a month or so to do a wild card class and pick one from Razz's list. I would like to see more on the Urban Druid, Psion, and Shugenja. In that order.

Awsome suggestion Razz.

Is it also possible to do a Dragonlance article? Now I know someone is going to say there was one in Dragon 315.

But how about a new one?

With the current developments on Krynn and according to the Wizards Conclave novel, wizards and sorcerers are going to becoming into major conflict. This could make for an interesting versus article that if written just right should be easily transferred to any campaign setting. Just a suggestion though. Any Dragonlance article would be nice.

Also, in case anyone did not know there was bonus content for the Dragonlance article from Dragon 315 posted at http://www.dragonlance.com/products/enhancements/10001.aspx

Heh, doesn't Dragon only come out once a month?

Yeah, It comes out once a month. But I meant it would be nice for them to cover a non-standard class once an issue, once every other issue, or whenever they can fit it in. Maybe I should of said 'once in a while' sorry.

There was a Dragon issue that did that. It listed monsters from MMII, MM, and MoF that can be summoned via summon monster and summon nature's ally.

It was issue 302. It listed all Razz mentioned and creatures from the Manual of the Planes.

Yes, I have that article. However, that article was more of a "how to" article and based the list on the author's formula. Additionally, it was 3E and is no longer completely relevant, since the fiends received a substantial power-up. For example, a cornugon was listed on the Summon Monster VIII list in the article. In 3.5, it is too good for even summon monster IX according to the summon lists in the Player's Handbook.

Plus, many more monsters have been released since then (Fiend Folio, Book of Vile Darkness, Book of Exalted Deeds, Draconomicon, and so on), so an update wouldn't hurt.

I'd like to add support to the suggestion that the Class Acts feature include a wild card class from a book other than the PH. Personally, I'd like to see the ones from the Expanded Psionics Handbook but I can understand people wanting to see stuff from the Complete Books. One a month should be enough to make both the "PH only" camp and the "whatever class you want" camp happy.

I don't believe one wild card class would do it. You have to remember, there're 17 new classes published by WotC (not including the ones published by Dragon), and so to make it one wild card class a month wouldn't really make much people happy since a particular class would have to wait almost over a year to make an appearance in Class Acts.

I say each issue should have a random selection of the classes presented. Not only is it more fair, but there is one fact. There are tons of new stuff to spice up your 3.5 PHB classes...but the amount of material to spice up the new ones published like Swashbuckler, Spirit Chaman, etc. rather pales in comparison to the PHB classes.

I as well would like to see more epic content in dragon. Even if it is only feats. Any type of Epic support would be great.

Also, you need a gnoll avatar!

I agree, both Epic and Psionic support should be in the magazine. And the occasionaly Planar article as well.

Actually I only buy Dragon (and Dungeon) for Forgotten Realms content. So, quite simply, if you want me to buy an issue put in some FR articles. If you want me to buy every issue, put an FR article into every issue. Pretty easy really.:)

The number of people Dragon would lose as subscribers in order to get George to subscribe is definitely not worth it. If George wants to buy the occasional news stand copy that contains an FR article, Paizo counts him as a bonus sale. One-setting-purchasers are not Paizo's target market, any more than Climbing Magazine targets Colorado-only rock-climbers.

If you want most of us to sunscribe, keep the magazine diverse.

One thing I would like to see them do is place sidebars informing us how to place the articles into Forgotten Realms campaign or and Eberron one. They used to do that but it's slowly fading out the magazine, which was bad cause those sidebars would make FR people happy to see how they could fit a prestige class, monster or whatever into their games.

To the Forgotten Realms crowd:
How hard is it to add a Prestige Class, Feat, Spell, or anything else new into your campaign?

The Greyhawk users don't have that big of a problem fitting an adventure with a Red Wizard of Thay into the campaign. Some of us just change it to a wizard working for the Scarlet Brotherhood, or make it something completely different. Except for the Forgotten Realms material being a bit more powerful than the core rules (requiring a little bit more balance care), just about everything in the Forgotten Realms sourcebooks can fit into a Greyhawk campaign (or other homebrew) by simply changing the name of a city or leader.

Does the majority of Forgotten Realms population really *need* every detail spelled out?

Note: If this commentary does not apply to your campaign, play style or experience, please disregard it. It is intended to query those who consistently request that material not designed "for the Forgotten Realms" be spelled out for them.

It's a convenience thing for me, Seeker. I haven't had a lot of time lately to work on my FR campaign, but being a FR fan, I don't need everything spelled out, in fact, I prefer that it not be, so I can add in any of my specifics I want to add without saying, "hmm, can't put it there...already defined."

But conversely, if Dragon puts out material on the FR that previously has not been included in Realmslore, nor supplementally been added in by me, then yeah, I like to see it. Actually, I think Greyhawk material can just as easily be incorporated into the FR. All you need to do is change the names and modify it to taste and you're good to go.

Actually, I think I'm very close to reaching full-on saturation in regards to my FR. Only truly unique and original material makes it in now, and it has to wow me, whether that material is from official channels or private.

No, we don't need it spelled out for us to include something in FR. We just need a sidebar for suggestions on how to make it fit. Sidebars are small and don't take up hardly any space on the page.

In Dragon issue #323, there was an article on feats mainly for the Desert and Seafaring adventurers. It stated the feats could be used as regional feats in an FR campaign....the problem was, it didn't give us a sidebar stating which feat would truly belong into each region. While I could sit down and cross-examine each feat with each region piece by piece, that takes up time I normally cannot spare (nor should anyone else).

Clearly those feats HAD to be regional feats, they were way too good to be General feats. (for those who have Dragon #323, you will know what I mean). A sidebar detailing which feat belonged to which region would've been very useful and saved a lot of times for us DMs that can't truly spare any time to properly fit those feats into their proper regions.

That was just one example. I have seen prestige classes so clearly defined and specific that it was very, very hard to place it into an FR campaign. I can't remember which ones, but they were there and they were a nuisance as I sat there doing what I could to make it fit an FR game.

But a sidebar could've fixed it in 2 seconds. So, that's my reason for wanting the FR/Eberron sidebars (I don't play Eberron but it'd sure be nice if it were there for both types of players)

Razz and Varl,

Thanks for the feedback. When I saw that there were two responses after my post, I was nervous that my comments were going to be taken as personal attacks, and they were not intended as such. I was quite relieved that both of your posts responded to the question, and not any perceived intentions behind the question.

I still don't see what real benefit an FR-placement sidebar would have for you, but just because I can't see it doesn't mean you can't either.

Again, thank you both for the responses. And to Paizo, are you listening? While I can't use such an element, Razz and Varl outnumber me 2-1, and I won't drop my subscription just because you use their idea. :D

I have run a homebrew since '79.

I read every article and glean what I can. Then just like all the other products that don't fall simply into place I twist, hack, and gut them as necessary to fit my world's aura and mysticism. Those that are irrelevant are I cast aside like so much chaff. My players reap the benefits I have sown and in return breathe life across my world. New players are greeted with a living history portrayed against the backdrop I created.

I do this in the time it takes to read the article. I know my world backwards and forwards (in timeline). The same should go for any DM. You are the ultimate referee. DMing takes painstaking time and effort. In the end, your world and players are worth it.

Sidebar:
I, however play in FR. I have changed the face of the Realms. I have engineered a canal from the Vilhon Reach to the Lake of Steam to provide Cormyr and the Dales sea travel to Halruaa and Waterdeep. Nevertheless, you have never read of this and I am sure it would never exist in any other’s world the quite the same way if you did.

I’m still tinkering with some thoughts about aspects of Eb.

What i would like to see are stats and history for the new characters that are gracing the cover and adventures inside

Dark Archive

I like the idea of a regular psionics-article (Mind's Eye-style), maybe two pages every other month or something like this. A one-page series would limit the depthness of the content (as its the case with many class-acts).

The wildcard-option for class-acts sounds good to me.
Another option would be too include a psionic class and one from the complete books every month. Okay, this would blow up the section by two pages, but the class-acts seem quite popular to me. One of the mayor critics is always the length and the limitation to PHB-classes. If something is done about these aspects, you'd have a really sucessfull section...

I'd also like to see more planar-stuff, be it locations (i'd really like to see a city-article on one of the lower planes as well), planar items, NPC's (planewalkers) or creatures.
