When you've been rolling dice for over two decades, sometimes you forget what it's like to have no idea what a roleplaying game is. The tome that is the Pathfinder Roleplaying Core Rulebook is massive, but not so friendly for the first-time player. Many of us at Paizo got our starts on a boxed set of some vintage or other, and we wanted to pass that on to a new generation of gamers with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Beginner Box!

Top to bottom, the Beginner Box is stuffed with everything you need to begin playing fantasy roleplaying games (with a little bit of extra room for paper and pencil)! The Hero's Handbook introduces you to rolling dice and fighting monsters right away with the solo adventure, "Skeleton King's Crypt." From there, we move on to creating your own character, with classes and races that have long been a part of fantasy roleplaying. Choose between the honorable dwarf, graceful elf, or the adaptable human for your race, then select one of four adventuring classes: the faith-driven cleric, brave fighter, stealthy rogue, or the magic-wielding wizard! The Beginner Box takes you through five levels of play, with guidelines on how to become stronger in your class and suggestions on how to make your character unique and your own. If you just want to hop in and play, well, we've got four pregenerated characters for you to choose from, as well as blank character sheets for your own characters!

Being a player is only half of the game—you also need the referee! The Game Master has a tough, but exciting job. You get to set the stage, bring in the supporting cast, and arrange a bevy of challenges both martial and mental for the players, and with the Game Master's Guide, we're there to help you! The provided adventure, "Black Fang's Dungeon" gives you an idea of an exciting challenge to players (which goes with the Flip-Mat we included in the Beginner Box), and we also give guidelines to GMs looking to craft their own adventures. We talk about The Most Important GM Duty, give random story ideas, varying encounters for some spice, how to reward characters, building a campaign, then building a world! We didn't skimp on the magic or the monsters, either, and the latter half of the Game Master's Guide is packed full of classic loot (and their owners) for your game!

Did we mention the 80 cardstock pawns that are included in the Beginner Box? From the restless dead to pyromaniac goblins, enormous insects, and stronger foes like the mummy or hell hound, this set of pawns will give you plenty of exciting challenges for players. We've also got pawns for the good guys too, and we've got plenty of bases to use for the figures as well. Don't worry, we didn't forget the essentials, either: dice! You'll get your very own set of red polyhedral dice so you can get gaming immediately!

All of the Beginner Box material has clear examples of play, beautiful art, and step-by-step instructions on getting into the endless worlds of imagination possible with roleplaying games!
