New release from Open Design Books!

Dragons are the big guns of any fantasy game, but sometimes your party just isn't ready to face off against the epitome of draconic might. Enter Midgard: Book of Drakes from those fine kobolds over at Open Design!

Drakes are perfect introductions to the wondrous variety of the dragon family tree, and with this book, there are over 20 varieties to choose from! The fairly benign alehouse, paper, and steam drakes show their scales in this book, as well as the deep, prismatic and sewer drakes. Game masters wishing to try their hand at crafting a drake of their own have step-by-step guidelines for crafting some of the more esoteric varieties of drake, ones whispered in tales from storyteller to storyteller.

Lest you think this a book only for game masters—it's not! There are plenty of options for players, whether you want to have a drake for an animal companion, take the drake tamer alternate class, or even play a drake as a character! New archetypes such as the paladin's dragon challenger await, as does the Drake subdomain, the Order of the Drake, two new oracle curses, and a slew of other drake-focused choices! Drakes get a choice of weaponry, including tail spikes, as well as magical items designed to take advantage of their small size and agility!

Even better, the Open Design kobolds have a deal for you! Until the Fourth of July, the Book of Drakes PDF is only $4.95, and those nimble kobold couriers have delivered a freshly-hatched batch of print copies to our warehouse! Check out the rest of the world of Midgard right here, and Open Design's other Pathfinder RPG books right here!

Thanks for the Store Blog love!

Edit: ...and seriously, take advantage of the $4.95 limited time offer on the PDF. If nothing else, there's 60 beautifully laid-out and illustrated full-color pages to drool over.

Nice guys! Congratulations!

This book rocks! I just got a copy today and it's got 21 new dragons from CR 1 to CR 14, plus a bunch of thematically-appropriate spells, feats, and class variations. I smell a dragon-hunter campaign in my near future!

I've been waiting for this book for a long time. It reminds me of the awesomeness back in the early days of Dragon magazine when we discovered there was a class of neutral dragons named after gem stones. I think I was sold by the preview on Kolbold quarterly.

The Exchange Kobold Press

The preview is pretty cool, and shows off both the excellent mechanics of the drake designs and the sheer visual coolness. I'm glad people are digging it, Book of Drakes is a really fun release.

I'm curious whether people will use it more for familiars or foes. Hm.

Clockwork Gnome Publishing

Congratulations guys! I am just going to start digging into it myself. The book looks fantastic.

I was just saying the other day that your work for this book is amazing Hugo. Seriously wonderful stuff.

Bought the print/pdf bundle. After looking through the pdf, I'm really glad I bought the print also. The design, layout and artwork of this book is excellent. I cannot wait to see the printed book.

Looking forward to using some of these drakes in my Kingmaker campaign.

Congrats on a great product.

Zombie Sky Press

Drakes FTW!

Congrats Adam, Mike, and Hugo on a wonderful release!

The Exchange Kobold Press

Thanks Allen Taliesin and h2ofowler! I'd love to hear about the drakes in play.

I don't suppose I can buy the PDF and if I love it upgrade to the PDF/Paper bundle for the difference?

I don't know whether Paizo does that sort of thing, but it seems like the sort of extreme customer service they *might* do.

I do know the Kobold store will do this upgrade if you purchase your PDF there. Just mention it in the Notes field.

I can totally set that up for you, Galnörag. After you get the PDF, if you want to upgrade just send me an email (to customer.service@paizo.com) with your request. What will happen is that we will "return" the PDF for Paizo store credit that you can then use towards the Print/PDF bundle purchase.

Thanks,

Neat book; no regrets in buying it. In particular, I'm likely to get some use out of the drake creation guidelines; those alone are worth the price.

That said, there are a couple of places where the graphics don't come out right if you're viewing it in Preview on a mac; pages 4 & 7 to be precise. Not a serious flaw in this case - it's only two images, and none of the text is lost (though you do need to do a bit of copy-paste to get at what's written on p4), but I figured you might want to know.

Just bought the pdf and it's gorgeous! I may just have to try the upgrade route too :-) Poor Cosmo!

I love this book. I have two copies and the PDF. I was fortunate enough to have a very nice badger who snaffled up a color printing for me, that's going in a Mylar bag =). I love the artwork, and the various drakes are great opponents for those who want to challenge lesser level parties! Kudos all around for a great book!

RPG Superstar 2012

Thanks, Emerald Wyvern, carborundum, and Patrick for the nice words! Thanks also for the heads up, Emerald Wyvern.

Patrick, I'm glad I could do it for you, especially since you've been a "drake supporter" since before this book was even a thought. :)

You're welcome! Midgard's the first OD I haven't bought in on (new baby) and it's just typical that it's turning out so awesome :-)

Patrick, when you say color printing... is the book not in glorious technicolor like the pdf?

I'm afraid it is B&W on the interior. =(

Congrats on the new baby! Although it is too bad your finances are restricted, because OD just fired up a planar project. Link

Sorry to tease you with this, but I'm am shilling this project everywhere I can to get some patrons in. =)

And less the. An hour later I've bought the book/PDF combo...

Great work

Small complaint, the PDF on my iPad is funky . The embellishments between sections appear like black blotches, and on page 4 the image that looks like a drake shaped watermark is instead a black blob. On page 7 the text appears aligned for an image I. The left corner but no image is there. The embellishments are an issue through the whole PDF, but don't detract from the content, nor prevented me from purchasing it, just hope they can be tweaked and the PDF updated?

First, thank you, sir!

Second, I'm not seeing that on any of the ways I have to view the file, but I don't have your set-up. Maybe it's a simple fix, but to be honest, I'm ignorant of the magic that happens behind the scenes that turns text and sketches into a real book. I'm sure Wolfgang or someone will see this and check it out.

Third, thanks again! All of you.

Adam, seems like something like this is more easily solved when the problem is evident. So I sent an image of "what I see" to the email address you have listed in your account. Share to whomever is needed, and no getting me in trouble for sending you unauthorized copies of pages ofyour book :P

The Exchange Kobold Press

Galnörag, thanks for reporting this! We didn't test the file on the iPad, an oversight I'm happy to remedy next time.

Thanks for sending screenshots, we'll work on a fix right after the holiday!

Not actually appearing in Book of Drakes: The Arachnidrake!

While I was working on this drake, I actually felt itchy all over.

Thanks! The art really brings out the creepiness.

(It's a lot of fun to see an artist's interpretation of my work, because I kinda have an image in my mind, but I can't possibly translate it to the page. Oftentimes the illustration looks far better than what I envisioned.)

Also not appearing in Book of Drakes: The Beatific Drake!

I felt the need to create a "nice" creature to counterbalance the creepy ones, although necromancers might disagree with the description.

It's a great free preview of what people should expect. And also, a decent companion drake.

Good news: Book of Drakes is the #1 PDF download at Paizo this week! As in, the bestseller, the top shelf, the king of the 3PP heap!

Congrats to Daigle and Taig, and a big thank-you to everyone who checked out the Book of Drakes!

Indeed. I'm glad you've been enjoying the book.

Thanks also to Mr. Baur for taking a chance on Adam, Hugo and me, and publishing the book.

Scott, thank you for your comment as well as your role in getting those first few drakes up on the KQ website.

I'm glad I was able to produce some options for Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat. The magus especially needs a drake. :)

I see a Book of Drakes: Addendum on the horizon.

Actually, since I kinda pitched this book in a public forum to begin with, I think our next thing should be a stand-alone adventure where the players can choose from 6-ish pre-gen'd drakes. That'd kick ass!
