Useful in Isolation but Hard to Reference, Store (Still)

5/5

What follows is another repeat of my Bestiary 1 Battle Cards review. I have all three bestiary card sets and they're of the same high quality and make running even adventure paths easier! Great production with baffling reference choices:

Useful in isolation and the highest production values. These are much better than the equivalents in the other roleplaying game. However, there are some serious flaws for use as a Referee (who grabs and stores these cards often):

1) The box. The cards lay flat in two columns. There's no possibility to add dividers for the 300-400 cards. The box is hella sturdy, so they could've been stacked on their edge: sideways or vertically -- like magic. This would allow you to add dividers for storage and referencing the numbering, which leads me to...

2) The numbering. This should be great. However, these numbers aren't in the Bestiary. They're arbitrary to this card deck and, thankfully, matched in the cardboard minis. Which makes it great to store if it weren't for #1. I wish the monsters had canonical numbering in the bestiary so everything was clearly organized and laid out but...

3) The layout. Some monsters are split across three cards. Due to layout. They couldn't easily used a landscape orientation, two-column layout for the statblocks, a trick the books use to eliminate empty space. They have two magic cards worth of space but use one at best. Most GMs will flash this to the players then use them as reference, letting the matching cardboard or plastic miniatures take over representation. There's no indication of which bestiary it's from, so if you spill multiple sets, it'll be hard to organize them again. There's a 1-400 in each set.

Production values are great. Totally support the amazing workers. Just needed a little more practical experience and use by Referee to understand what would be useful as a reference.

Very nice! I love these cards (I've got both Bestiary 1 & 2 Battle Cards) and will buy this set as well. They're very handy at the table, but storing them is another matter, since the boxes are a bit too small and tight. It'd be better if you could riffle through them.

These cards are always beautiful!

Excited for these! One of my favorite digital products!

So I happened to get the PDF's/Digital Jpegs of these early and I noticed that several of the Jpegs are very poor quality. The artwork itself is very pixilated.

Good example is comparing Card 24 (Azarketi Explorer) jpeg verses the one in the pdf. That isn't the only example though there are several super-pixelated ones.

Yup- Confirmed. The same thing happened with the JPGs for the first set. Paizo was able to get it fixed pretty quickly though so I’m sure the download will be updated.

In short, we did have tech issues on the digital product. We know what happened. We are working on a solution.

Glad to hear it Aaron, thanks for the update!

The card for the Clockwork Mage shows it as level 13, but the bestiary shows level 9. I believe the 9 is correct based on the guidelines in the GMG.

Hope you guys enjoy your day off! :)

I know it has been a crazy time at Paizo, but I still wanted to prod this to see where this is at.

Thanks!

I've advocated internally for someone to take a look, again.

I have not heard. I have escalated this to those who might know how to make some progress on the issue. Thanks.

Hey there. I'm afraid this is still an issue for several of the cards, and since it has been 5 months since the last post I wanted to bump it a bit for visibility's sake.

Hi Aaron!

So this still isn't fixed. I guess is there a chance you could poke them again? I would like to be able to use them and at this point and it has been over a year with no fix. Don't take this at me being mad at you by the by I know you are just the messenger. :)

Thanks!

Just to check, battle cards line was discontinued right?

I'm bit sad about that since with pawns boxes also being out it means we won't ever get art for all new bestiary monsters, but they were also handy even if they didn't get errata'd or took lot of space and money :'D (I haven't gotten lot of these just because I'm running out of space)

Where did you hear of a discontinuation? I have not. If it's because remastered ones haven't been announced yet, just to put it into perspective, we are JUST starting to get the remastered spell cards for PC1 and PC2.

Given that we have Monster Core Battle Cards coming (according to the Accessories Sub), I'd say reports of the battle cards death are greatly exaggerated :p
