How do you Maximize 'Scribe Scroll'?

Advice

What advice would you give to a Support Cleric with Use Magical Device oh how to maximize using `Scribe Scroll`?

Same advice I would give a wizard. Combine it with Cypher Script. +1 Caster Level to all scrolls. It doesn't sound like much, buy for support spells, and scrolls used with UMD it makes a big differance.

A couple of ways.

First, realize that storing uncast spells as scrolls at the end of the day (well, as many as you can), is just storing money. Because the sale price of the spell (1/2 price) is the same as the creation price (1/2 price), you can always sell them and get your money back. So when you have them in scroll form you have the choice of 'paying' for that perfect spell right now. It's worth having a lot of scrolls.

Next is to think about spell selection for scrolls. Not all spells are good scroll spells, and others work beautifully.

What you are looking for is:

- Duration of instantaneous, 10 min/lvl, or hrs/lvl. Things that are mins/lvl tend to be too short to make it worth your time and money... but sometimes they are so niche that they are worth it.

- No save. This could be a spell that has no save or just one that is cast on people who won't save (buffs). Either way it doesn't matter that the spell is not using your casting stat and has weak saves.

- Unique, low frequency use abilities. Things that happen out of combat that are PERFECT once in a while, but not worth memorizing every day.

- Things you are not planning on casting a ton of. Wands are better deals per charge (assuming you craft wands), so if you have something like Cure Light Wounds that is just better in a wand, go that route.

you can only make one scroll a day as per the magic item creation rules.

Half elf has an alternate racial trait that can use spell trigger and spell completion items as if one level higher. I think it has to be an arcane class though.

Benefit: You can create a scroll of any spell that you know. Scribing a scroll takes 2 hours if its base price is 250 gp or less, otherwise scribing a scroll takes 1 day for each 1,000 gp in its base price. To scribe a scroll, you must use up raw materials costing half of this base price.

The price of a scroll is equal to the level of the spell × the creator's caster level × 25 gp

It actual a great way to make money at low levels and later on... take leadership to start your own scribe business with level 1 adepts.

PRD on magic item creation paragraph 6.

"Regardless of the time needed for construction, a caster can create no more than one magic item per day."

There is no money gained. Item creation costs half the base cost to create. For scrolls this is equal to half the market value which is also what you get if you sell an item.

A level 1 scroll has a market value of 25gp which is its base cost. You can create this for half the base cost which is 12.5gp.

As per the equipment section on selling treasure;

"In general, a character can sell something for half it's listed price, including weapons, armor, gear, and magic items. This also includes character-created items."

Spells with expensive components will be an exception to this and the component price will be factored into the market value and must be provided for when creating the scroll.

You can use the hedge magician trait to make a tiny profit. Also if you house rule selling and buying at different prices then you also could make a profit.

Is umd needed for scrolls of spells you can cast? Wands certainly don't.

Also you are doing more than just saving money. You are getting extra spells per day. It's worth getting some super useful but very rarely needed spells but also potentially some things you need often if you have the spare cash.

Hmmmm. That is an odd question. Getting the most out of scribe scroll is basically about having access to all of the spells that are not dependent on being cast from memory. Scrolls are going to have really low DC's, low chance of beating SR, and often be at minimum caster level.

Using scribe scroll, AND UMD opens up some opportunities that get interesting. [I was about to say that you could use the feat to scribe druid or sorcerer spells, but there is the sentence, "Benefit: You can create a scroll of any spell that you know." So I don't think you can use the feat cooperatively. ]

However, you can still use UMD to use scrolls you normally could not. Shield, Magic Missile, Haste, Mirror Image, Glibness, etc. Find the best druid, sor/wiz, bard, and even paladin scrolls you can, and use them when your enemies least expect it.

I tend to scribe scrolls of spells that have the most utility, and are ideally seldom cast, as well as some spells that you might find yourself desperately needing:

[Druid]

- Healing Spells
- Restoration Spells
- Neutralize Poison
- Dispel Magic
- Divination Spells (scrying, for example)
- Transportation Spells
- Campsite Fortification Spells
- Niche Damage Spells (sunbeam versus powerful undead)
- more that I can't think of at the moment

For a cleric, I'd look at a very similar lineup, but also including disease removal, and possibly omitting healing spells (or just make them less of a priority for scribing into scrolls).
