Welcome to The Sinking, Campaign Serial, Season II!

"Locks of the Panopticon," written by John Ling, is part of an ongoing series set in the Great City.

The Sinking is now entering in its final stage as the adventures become more specific, and should be played in a sequence.

Each one will be a stand-alone adventure, designed to be played in a single evening’s play.

The PCs learn that the Trypus unearthed secrets from within the Sink that have allowed them to build a colossal-sized, monstrous construct death-machine. To counter them, the PCs must find and open a series of mysterious locks that allow them to access the fabled Panopticon.

"Locks of the Panopticon" is an adventure for Season II of the Great City: The Sinking adventure serial. It was designed using the Pathfinder RPG system and intended for a group of 10th-level Player Characters.

An Endzeitgeist.com review of the revised edition

4/5

This installment of the Sinking-mini-modules clocks in at 21 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page SRD, 1 page editorial, 1 page ToC, 2 pages of advertisement, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 14 pages of content, so let's take a look!

This being an adventure-review, the following contains SPOILERS. Potential players will want to jump to the conclusion.

Still here? All right!

With a massive bounty on their heads, courtesy of the Trypus Acadamae, the PCs hopefully have managed to flee the city once again towards their refugee camp, where blood senator Vulgrax may actually prove helpful with the help of the information the PCs have uncovered - the PCs are presented with a blade with weird etchings that may prove to be from the hold the Malchort Cabal operates from/seeks to control - the fabled Panopticon. (And yes, if this does not feature an omni-scrying device, I will be very much disappointed for using cool terminology and then failing to deliver.)

Now via the lost tunnels in the Vulgrax's old holdings, the PCs may penetrate the fortress of the Malchort -however, they will have to succeed in elementally-themed challenges - from freezing cold subterranean lakes with sea serpents, magma lakes etc. - the challenges per se are simply awesome and at this point, I've seen *A LOT* elemental shenanigans: They actually require brains as well as brawns to solve and e.g. challenge the player's logic with an AWESOME poem/light-based puzzle. Better yet, the problematic map-glitch that rendered one puzzle unwinnable has been fixed - kudos!

Finally bypassing a crystal dragon and dread undead guardians, the PCs can penetrate the panopticon through the Darkgate...where the final chapter of The Sinking awaits!

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are good - since the map-glitch has been resolved, no particularly crucial mistakes remain.. Layout adheres to a 2-column b/w-standard and the pdf comes with cool, original b/w-artworks and 0onegame's great cartography. The pdf comes extensively bookmarked for your convenience.

Author John Ling cares about this module and one can see why. He has delivered an array of solid challenges, which, while in theme being of the "been there, done that" type, in execution, panache and flair more than make up for the classic theme. I love it if players need to use their brains as well. The elemental challenges herein proved to be surprisingly neat and this module with its low price point and now fixed maps may not stand as the best in the series, but it is definitely a good module. My final verdict will clock in at 4 stars.

Endzeitgeist out.

I'm just seeing this review - I don't search myself all that often. ;)

End - let me poke around over the next couple of days and see if I can figure out what happened with that map. I'd like to think I included all the information in my map turnovers when I wrote it, but it was so long ago I have no idea for sure. The plus is that since this is a PDF, once the problem is identified - thanks! :) - it should be pretty easy to fix.

Other than the map glitch, I'm glad you liked the adventure.

So, as a follow-up (and I'll pass along the info to Tim and Mario as well so it can get updated): I just re-downloaded the product from DriveThruRPG.com so I have a current copy. Based on that version, here's what needs to be fixed on the map for The Test of Air encounter.

Potential adventure spoilers:
1) One of the squares marked with a "Y" should instead be marked with a "V". It's immaterial which - both are "safe" squares.
2) All the squares along the west wall should have a "W" in them. These are the "white" squares.
3) In the short term, the GM can randomly select other squares to have "O," "I," and "G." As with 1 above, the actual location doesn't much matter. These squares - and, really, every other square in the room - are unsafe and bad mojo will happen to anybody standing in them.

Again, my apologies for the confusion; I'll pass the corrections along to Tim and Mario, and hopefully the PDF can get updated.

Hej, it's cool that you actually contact the guys in charge and provide the changes. I will update my review, as always, once the changes hit. :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's an advantage to working with great companies like 0one Games. Hopefully it can get fixed relatively quick.

I appreciate the kind words in the review about the encounters and such in this adventure.

I'll update the maps as soon as I can, and will get it published. I'll post an update on this thread when done. Thanks all for getting this to my attention.

The map has been updated today, customers should be notified shortly. Thanks all again.

Upgraded my review in all the places to reflect the improved content.

Cheers, End. Thanks for pointing out the map glitch; I'll need to do better turnovers in the future. I always knew my turnover maps were bad, but this is a reminder that even somebody as awesome as Mario needs decent starting material. A good lesson/reminder.

And of course, thanks for the kind words and solid review.

And thank you, Mario, for being so willing to revise the error. Working for awesome publishers has some benefits. :)
