Chapter 5: "Rasputin Must Die!"
by Brandon Hodge

Worlds at War
The search for the Queen of Witches finally ends when the Dancing Hut travels to Baba Yaga’s homeland of Russia on the planet Earth. The year is 1918, and the First World War rages throughout Europe. The heroes find themselves in the wilds of Siberia, where they must face Russian soldiers armed with twentieth-century technology to infiltrate an ancient monastery and rescue Baba Yaga from her estranged son, Grigori Rasputin. Can the heroes kill the “Mad Monk”—who has already cheated death once before—and free Baba Yaga, or will they fall before the horrors of modern war?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Reign of Winter Adventure Path and includes:

  • “Rasputin Must Die!”, a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 13th-level characters, by Brandon Hodge.
  • A look into the cultural climate of Russia in the midst of revolution, along with rules for her weapons of war, by Adam Daigle and Brandon Hodge.
  • Revelations on Szuriel, the Horseman of War, and her brutal quest for souls, by Sean K Reynolds.
  • Spiders versus sentient dolls in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Kevin Andrew Murphy.
  • Four new monsters, by Adam Daigle, Brandon Hodge, and Sean K Reynolds.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Player review.

I had been looking forward to this one simply on account of the title. I have to say that the story elements and the setting were top notch. Where we all found it lost points was just how overpowered we found most of the fights. Even for experienced players we found them too difficult for the levels.

Absolutely amazing!

5/5

Everything about this book - from Brandon Hodge's introduction to the back-matter to the inside-cover items - was a joy and a pleasure to read!

This is, by far, my favorite book/module/scenario/AP to have read and GM'd - slightly edging out "The Flesh Collector" PFS scenario, even!

My players were having so much fun with this book that I purposefully dragged out RP and certain sections of it so the book took us longer than any of the others, and they loved every minute of it.

Bravo!

Two words : Must-Buy

5/5

It is simply amazing.
There are several 'look so mad' things, but,
actually all of them are perfectly harmonized without way over the line.
Rasputin must Die! is definetly top of the adventure path line.
Highly recommend!

,One of the best adventures I have ever read

5/5

Brandon Hodge was definitely the best choice for this adventure. He expertly handled historical content and mixed the fantasy with real world elements in a way that enhanced the story. I love this adventure and he it gives me hope for seeing more boundary pushing content from Brandon and from Paizo as a whole.

Amazing adventure

5/5

I admit when this was first announced I was at best sceptical of the entire idea however having read and Dm'd it I can say I have never been happier to be completly wrong about a product before. Ths is an incredible adventure path instalment and I cant recomend it enough.

Insane dark horse Bestiary candidate: The monster from Horror Express. :D

The Horror on the Orient Express? Train ride o' DOOOOOOM!! :D

I've been trying to work out where this "ancient monastery" would be, exactly. Rasputin was never actually a monk, but he did spend three months at a monastery in Verkhoturye north of Yekaterinburg, which would be right around the eastern front of the Russian Civil War.

However, that monastery would still have been active at the time, so it's unlikely Rasputin would be hiding out there, and I'm guessing that Mr. Hodge will probably use a fictional monastery, for all sorts of reasons.

Still, if I were to guess, I figure the AP will probably take place somewhere in the vicinity of the southern Urals.

Another possibility would be somewhere around Arkhangelsk, since it's cold and remote and there are a lot of old monasteries in the region. Plus, then you might theoretically have an excuse for a British tank to show up. On the other hand, that area isn't really part of Siberia...

I can only confirm that one of those guesses may or may not be correct. ;-)

*Waiting for an update.*

Huh, I haven't seen Cheapy in here needling the Paizo staff for an update in days. Maybe he has lost interest or something...

*Still waiting for an update.*

Others are doing my work for me, so I sit and watch.

And wait.

Old Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing horror movie set on a train on the Trans-Siberian railroad during Tsarist years. Undead alien thing in a frozen corpse in a crate leads to all sorts of badness during the trip. There's even a Rasputin expy!

Also, Telly Savalas plays a Cossack officer without even bothering with an accent.

Telly Savalas is so cool, he doesn't need to bother with an accent.

Almost, but not quite, as cool as Sean Connery, whose accent fits the nationality . . . no matter what! ;)

Horror Express is an EXCELLENT movie. It frightened the hell out of me when I saw it on TV as a kid... the scene where they cut open someone's skull and expose a brain that's been drained of its fissures and is smooth and featureless stuck in my head. It's also a relatively Lovecraftian-feeling movie as well. Great stuff!

with that i bring you a riff of the Horror Express brought to you buy Rifftrax. Sadly its one without Mike, Bill, and Kevin. Link

For those of you working on your Russian accent, just keep repeating "Laquer Box" ;)

And it parks within relative proximity to where Die Raputin, Die! takes place, doesn't it? ;)

I too, recall Horror Express on TV as a kid. I think about the same age as James or just a couple years older. It was freaky at the time.

I have no idea. Siberia is a huge place, and I wasn't all that involved with the nitty-gritty writing/development of that adventure or the Reign of Winter AP.

so when do you think they will update the description and cover, before or after the release of the next AP?

I'd advise doing what I did and taking a page from Cheapy: Patience. I'm sure it will happen any day now.

And still waiting...

I still want to know what the foreground image is on the mock-up cover. Can anyone tell me, please?

Dark Archive

It's from the bestiary section starter of one of the Skull and shackles Ap either book 5 or 6

That's the background image (from Skull and Shackles #5). But what is the foreground image?

So Updating the cover today maybe?

OK, at this point I'm finding myself getting suspicious that there has been some sort of delay in the delivery of the artwork or something. But I shall try to be patient...

They are working weekends in order to meet Convention Season deadlines—and they're salary employees, so that's mandatory overtime that they're compensated with by lunch, not overtime pay.

It could be just a case of simply being busy and prioritizing work. Try not to worry!

My personal theory is that they're hiding some kind of awesome surprise. The cover art will only be revealed when it's ready to ship.

If there was a delay in the artwork, we'd have bigger problems than not having the updated cover on the site. Not having the artwork by now would have messed up our production schedule, so I can assure you not having artwork is not the case.

Also, typically, cover art is some of the first pieces of art to come back from the artist since all the covers are done by the same artist and are assigned all at once.

I'm a canadian horticulturalist which means that right now I'm working long and exhausting hours—as soon as the snow melts, we have about three weeks in which to get plants dug, potted, and moved all while dealing with customers and maintaining the new seedlings and cuttings we have to bring on new plants. Imagine a farmer who has to do planting, selling, and harvest at the exact same time and you have a general idea. So I get it, I really do. So I am not worried!

Good to hear! I will assume it is the busy craziness then. Completely understandable! And...I sympathise.

That looks like something from a Shin Megami Tensei-verse game. Devil Summoner?

Damn if technology isn't cool.

Specifically, Devil Summoner: Raidu Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army

@Adam: Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but it looks like the Internet Zeitgeist answered it for me!

It is, as said, from Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army, an RPG for the Playstation 2 set in an alternate-universe weird-war style 1930s. Rasputin is one of the primary antagonists and has his whole matroyshka shtick that he seems to have in Reign of Winter, too.

The idea of injecting a little more "weird" into Earth is really tempting (depending on how much is already there.) I love the idea of things like clockwork undead (ala Hellboy) and the like popping up.
