Fantastic Quality

5/5

This book is well worth the price. The quality is amazing, the prints are beautiful (actually going to frame them and hang them) and the individual handouts are extremely helpful.

There is literally only 1 tiny thing that I was thrown off-guard about with this book and that is with the locking hinge with the grimoire case. There is a single piton about a centimeter long that is holding the hinge in place and if you hold the case upside down it falls into the metal casing in a way that it allows for the hinge to be removed, and if the hinge is removed and you turn the case right-side up the piton will fall out. Easy remedy, keep the book right-side up or flat on its back to let gravity do its work to keep the hinge in place.

So that is the only concern I had and wanted to put that out there for anyone who wants to purchase this fine piece of awesomeness so they are not caught off-guard as well.

Amazing Book!

I love this thing. I've had it for a while now and the only complaint I have is the star on the cover. The seven pointed star emblem on the cover of the case (not on the book inside) arrived partially scratched off and over time (maybe a few months) it has gathered a couple more scratches so I'm kind of bummed by it's lack of perfection. Everything else is wonderful!

The most awesome ..

5/5

Just got the deluxe edition as a pre-birthday gift from my players, and I have to say: It's the most awesome and unique roleplaying item I've ever had. Needless to say, I'll be using it for many forthcoming sessions, know all I need is a new haircut and color, some diamonds in my forehead and on my hands and loose a few pounds ... ;-)

If paizo ever considers doing other adventure paths in a deluxe edition/reprint (please consider it? plz) - I would suggest to stock some more AP related stuff into the box, like the Sandpoints Pawns, GameFlip mat, a printed version of the Players Guide (to the AP) etc.

Unbelievable

5/5

When he drops it on the table video, it didnt seem that heavy to me. when i went to lift it out of the box, i almost dropped it before i got a second hand in there!

This is a serious amount of metal, and that leather is SO SMOOTH to the touch. this is not a book make to look like a leather and metal bound tome, this IS a leather and metal bound tome!

the artwork in envelopes are also vastly better quality than what the video presents. the stock they are on cant be called paper, not sure what the industry term is for it. it is extremely thick and durable and the colors just shine off it.

Words cant describe... should have sent a poet...

beautiful!

5/5

There's not much I can add in a review that hasn't already been said by the others, except that it looks far better in person than it does in the pictures and videos.

My only possible complaint might be that the simulated edges of "pages" on the presentation box seem a bit too white, and might have used a very light stain to a colour more like aged parchment, but that's only a very, very minor nit-pick, and the case still looks great without it.

The hardware seems to be steel, and it's fastened to the cover with screws, making the construction quite sturdy. The clasp is a perfect fit - neither too loose, nor too snug.

The apparently fake leather of the box and book looks and feels quite real, and it's very soft and comfortable to the touch. This may be the nicest cover material of any book in my small collection. The spine of the box and book are textured as if the contents were bound with a heavy cord under the leather (though I don't think that's actually the case, rather just a simulation.)

The inside of the box cover seems to be a very heavy, high-quality paper, and the box itself is lined with a nice, black cloth, with a dark red ribbon which makes lifting the contents out of the box easier. The inside dimensions of the box are just right for holding your typical RPG book, or the Pathfinder DM screen and one or more Flip Maps, for example. (As others noted, if it's not holding the special edition RotRl book, it would make a fine box to store a DM's screen, dice, paper, and other such materials in.)

The book is printed in vivid colour in high-quality detail on heavy paper. This is the first time I've seen a Pathfinder adventure path of any sort, but I would have to imagine this is much higher quality printing than the original. The artwork is quite beautiful, meeting or exceeding Paizo's usual standards, the text is crisp and easy to read, and everything seems quite well-organized and easy to follow. The adventure is quite detailed (there is, perhaps, almost too much detail: the information provided is quite dense). The binding seems quite secure and well-done - this book seems to be designed for the long-haul (I can't really say the same for any of my other game books.)

The detachable hand-outs are quite a nice touch, though perhaps not really practical for real-life gaming, as I would imagine it could be quite easy to abuse the book by removing and replacing the handouts until things get dog-eared and distressed. Indeed, I would have to say that the book is best used for display as a collector-item only, rather than used on a real-world game table.

The high-quality art prints are another nice touch and could also be used as hand-outs or visual aids, though these seem more like bonus material than an integral part of the adventure path. Each print is protected in its own high-quality translucent paper (not plastic) envelope for protection, and yes the prints do seem to be nice enough to frame if you are so inclined.

I've shelved the book on my bookshelf next to the special edition of The Other Guys' fake-leather-bound special-edition 3.5E core rulebooks; the fit right in with each other, though I'd say that Paizo's product is much nicer than the Other Guys' special edition books.

The whole package seems to me to be worth the price, and I'm sure it will hold its value quite well for the future. Paizo have gone above and beyond on this product, and they've earned 5/5 stars for it.

Germany. And that's not all. I must pay toll and taxes. The result is a 400 USD adventure for the book. To much :(

Tax depends heavily how it is declared. Books should be free of tax in Europe - at least they are in the UK and I'm pretty sure this should be the case for Germany as well.

Gaming assesory on the other hand isn't - and then you pay Mehrwertsteuer not only for the book but also for shipping - and handling fee as well.

I do assume this is a book after all and is declared as such. And yes - how it is declared easily makes a difference of $60-100 extra.

Dark Archive

In Germany, you pay 7% taxes on books, including shipping. If the resulting taxes would be less than 5€, you don't have to pay them, though.

Sweet! Thanks James!

So when is the actual cut-off date for ordering this and still getting the PDF? I ask because I want to order it if possible, but I want to actually buy store credit ahead of time for a purchase of this size, and I will be doing that a little bit at a time each week between now and November.

Contributor

We don't have a final date nailed down yet when the product is available, but the preorder cutoff will end when we start shipping the product (currently estimated for November).

Liberty's Edge

Not playing Pathfinder right now, Swords & Wizardry my current fetish, but am SO looking forward to this product!!!

The PDF for this Product isn't any different from the regular anniversary edition is it?

I hear the pdf of this one includes a two-page spread pin-up picture of Mammy Graul too. Admittedly, the voices in my head are rarely right about these sorts of things.

The PDF is the same.

This product does not appear on the Product Schedule.

It is a problem because this means the Product Schedule is not the one-stop place I am looking for to learn every few weeks what Paizo products are going to be released soon. Even if I had previously understood it was supposed to be just that.

Contributor

Currently, the product schedule is for subscription items only, and the Collector's Edition Hardcover is not part of a subscription (unlike just about everything else that we publish). I'll poke the tech team to see if this is something that they can alter.

I am looking forward to it.

It's my Christmas present from my wife. :D

Vic Wertz is a good salesman.

Is there a more exact release date than "Early November" yet? Trying to figure which paycheck it's going to come out of is all.

Dark Archive

I too would sort of like to know when my check book is scheduled to take it's beating, any sort of firmer date than "early November"?

Me too :D

Heh, you think yours is going to take a beating? My wife and daughters birthdays are the third week of this month. I'm cringing.

Ouch!

I hope we get word of news of this soon. I am biting my fingernails. I need this on my pulpit book stand.

I'm sorry if this has been answered.

If I pre-order this product do I get the .pdf? Do I get the .pdf now since it's the same as the one for the normal product?

Yes, and you get it when the print edition ships.

Grand Lodge

Yes you get the PDF, but you do not get it until your card is charged.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Cannon fodder! :p

That is disappointing since the .pdf is already available. I'd like to go ahead and get this but that delay is frustrating. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for the people that have been waiting the full duration.

And no word on when it might ship?

Sovereign Court

I may be wrong, but I believe that you have to be an Adventure Path subscriber at the time that it ships to get the pdf. If you're not a subscriber, I don't think you get the pdf.

Yeah, I saw that in there after I asked, thanks though.....guess I should have spent less time looking through responses and more time reading the product description. :-P

Still would be nice to be able to pre-order it and get the .pdf at that time rather than having to wait. Oh well, I'm sure they have their reasons. I guess I have a decision to make.

Thanks all for the help.

Sczarni

Well, considering the unknown ship date and unexpected bills (in addition to birthdays and christmas), I'm probably going to have to cancel my preorder. This is an extremely depressing moment in life. :/

On a side note, how many in addition to preorders do you plan to make? Maybe I can get it after the holidays. If it still exists :/

You'll have to be quick with your decision, given it's due to arrive any day now. After that, it will be too late to sign up for an AP subscription and to preorder it. This would be an expensive outlay if one were expecting a free PDF and it didnt eventuate.

(I dont mean to imply you'll screw it up, but periodically people post about how their 'free PDF' didnt arrive only to learn they arent entitled to one. This would be a costly item to learn that lesson on..)

We have a set quantity that we've ordered, and this is not something that we are likely (if ever) to reprint in this form. We've gone through a little bit more than half of our allotted amounts, and I'm trying to get a firmer release date than what we've got.

Thank you Liz. for the update. I really don't want to have to cancel mine, but it's getting down to the wire now.

I take it that the change to my subscription shipment for November means that my monthly box of joy shall not contain this. Ah well, such is life... thankfully I don't have a group ready to start Rise of the Runelords yet, so all it means to me is another month until I can hold this book to assure myself that it is in fact as glorious as I believe it to be.

I'm glad to see the Paizo staff are as keen for this as I am :) I figure as long as you're all excited about a product, it's going to be a quality release (not that I've ever had any concerns when it comes to that)

I've been hearing about Rise of the Runelords since I first picked up Pathfinder last year, and I'm a sucker for all things limited edition, so this just seems like a match made in heaven for me. Plus, my players have been getting cocky due to some appalling rolling on my part, and some amazing rolls on theirs... From what I've heard about it, Hook Mountain Massacre ought to take some of the wind out of their sails *Cue evil madman laugh*

Do we know how large those "premium full color prints" are?

same size as book to fit in the box I would guess

It's now listed as "Unavailable." Dare I say.... does this mean my group should start preparing?

Webstore Gninja Minion

It should be available for preorder again—the original date estimates were off in the system, so they've been kicked forward again.

Now that the date has changed to "early December", can we get an actual date? The address I gave is going to change halfway through December, and since it takes about a week for Paizo orders to reach where I live, I'd like to know which address I need to have it route to.

So barring R'lyeh rising out of the Pacific . . . right before Christmas?

Sczarni

I don't mean this to come across as rude. Paizo is wonderful and I enjoy their products. I'm excited for this product. But it is YOUR product. Why is it that you're just as in the dark on release dates as we are about it? I'm just curious.

Understand that this is just a guess on my part. But I suspect it has to do with no control over the actual time needed to print it, nor pack for shipment back to the US, nor any control over the weather in the Pacific that affects the time a ship takes to arrive, nor the time it takes for the shipment to clear customs and be shipped to Paizo's warehouse. Then it takes time to unpack, inventory, repack for us and ship out.

I could be way off track but that is what I suspect happens.

Just my 2 cp.

EDIT: I am not even going to mention what happens if the longshoremen happen to be on a work stoppage or strike.

Webstore Gninja Minion

Another point to consider is that all of the metal pieces for this Deluxe Edition are not stock parts, and have to be custom-made. This is a process that takes time, in addition to all of the normal printing, packaging, and shipping.

Pathfinder Maps, Pathfinder Accessories, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I would also guess that "Twenty-two full-color player handouts and key maps are printed on high-quality paper and tucked into slitted pages" isn't exactly part of a standard book printing either.

I do hope that part turns out well.

Just ordered it the other day, and waiting for it is probably the worst torture I've ever had to endure. At least it gives me time to get a display case for it.

Well the delay has meant I've had to cancel my order. It is coming into Christmas expense time so I'll have to delay until next year, I hope there'll be some left.

And I miss out on the free PDF :(
