If It's Not Here, You Probably Don't Need It

5/5

Ultimate Equipment is a whopping, 400-page collection of stuff to kit out your Pathfinder character. With stats and prices included for everything, the book is a shopper’s dream. It compiles, occasionally revises, and significantly expands the gear options from previous Pathfinder hardcovers as well as various other Paizo products. The book doesn’t have *everything*, of course—new books continued to be published after it, containing new items—but it does have a wealth of gear for the vast majority of characters and builds. The lists of items and their descriptions is broken up with a lot of illustrations, and the book is in full-colour. Structurally, the book is sectioned into an introduction, six chapters, and three appendices (plus an index, crucial for a book like this).

The book’s introduction is just two pages long. It starts by going over where the items in the book are drawn from, noting that there are also several new ones (it’s great to see several contributions from the RPG Superstar contests). Each chapter then gets a paragraph or two of description, but the structure of the book is pretty self-explanatory.

Chapter 1 is Arms & Armor, surely the most visited part of the book. The 46 pages of material here cover all of the well-known weapons and armor in the game, but also includes a *lot* of fairly obscure ones. There are good descriptions of the equipment and helpful, clearly-written refresher on rules elements related to them (so you don’t have to switch to the Core Rulebook to remember what Armor Check Penalty affects, for example). There’s an extensive overview of the firearms rules, an organisation of the fighter weapon groups, a section on special materials (including some really interesting ones!), and a section for gear made of primitive material like bone or stone.

Chapter 2 is Gear and comes in at 56 pages. Everything from general adventuring gear (like rope) to mounts to clothing to lodging and services are covered here. Alchemical items receive several pages of coverage (a lot of the alchemical remedies are as good as spellcasting, and much cheaper), and there’s a couple of pages on poisons (with a good, clear explanation of how they work). I’ve always found particular value from the section on services—the book has costs for things like hiring a lawyer, a doctor, or a scribe. A lot of players (i.e., those not as interested in equipment) will appreciate the expanded list of class kits to get things done quickly.

Chapter 3 is Magic Arms and Armor and is 38 pages long. This chapter has weapon and armor special abilities as well as specific named weapons and armor. Some of the named weapons are really cool because they can do some things you just can’t do with the generic list of special abilities. Other items I noticed were things like folding plate (a brooch that instantly covers or removes a suit of full plate mail—like Iron Man in the movies!) and burrowing bullets (staggers living creatures as it burrows through their body).

Chapter 4 is Rings, Rods, and Staves (28 pages). I find most of the items in this chapter too expensive with effects easily duplicated more cheaply elsewhere. Most staffs, for example, just aren’t worth it apart from the few with one-of-a-kind abilities. On the other hand, the metamagic rods are surprisingly cheap for the instant versatility they give spellcasters, and probably should have been priced higher.

Chapter 5 is Wondrous Items and is the longest in the book at 122 pages! The chapter is broken down into body slots, so it’s easy to find something to fill an empty slot on your inventory sheet. There’s a ton of fun things that one hardly ever sees because folks are too busy with optimising every +1 they can out of the game. Neat things I noticed include the belt of the weasel, the shirt of immolation, the cloak of fiery vanishing, the bracelet of friends (in case you *do* split the party), and abjurant salt (could be a real life-saver!).

Chapter 6 is the shortest chapter (26 pages) and covers Artifacts and Other Items. The “Other” category referred to consists of cursed and intelligent items. I’m not a fan of intelligent items--they require the GM to role-play an omnipresent NPC and their ability to cast spells makes the action economy of the game too unbalanced. On the other hand, I am the evil type of GM who likes cursed items, and wishes we saw more of them--classics like the berserker sword and innovations like the dust of sneezing and choking really twist things around! Artifacts aren’t something I’ve ever had much opportunity to use.

The three appendices contain *extensive* random tables to generate various types of treasure, gems, and art objects. If you want a random level 1 potion or level 4 wand, this is the place to come.

Everything in Ultimate Equipment is setting-neutral, so you don’t have to worry about adventure spoilers (unlike those naughty players who just start googling stuff!). The items are also better vetted, and I wish more tables just limited available options to this book. If you can’t find what you want here, you probably don’t really need it!

By far my favorite PF book

5/5

I didnt realize how much I would be using this book when I picked it up. It is by far one of the most valuable PF books available. Get it to add all the right contexts to your partys equipment.

2/5

I'm rather disappointed with Ultimate Equipment overall. It reminds me an awful lot of the 3.5 Magic Item Compendium, with insanely cheap items and an overabundance of swift actions.

I find UE nearly useless for treasure generation since "common" Core items end up being so rare, and 80% of what else it generates are broken (too powerful), over-exotically flavored, or too niche. The Treasure Tables themselves, while useful for certain situations, seem turn every NPC into a Christmas Tree of items, half of which I would have to look up to even know what they do.

There aren't quite so many over-powered/dirt-cheap items as the MIC, although the exceptions are pretty exceptional (e.g. the PFS-banned Quick Runner's Shirt and Bracers of the Falcon). At least it fixed the APG staff prices though, and yes, the layout is useful, though I find it encourages metagamy "fill every slot" mentality

excellent book

5/5

This is a great book for finding equipment when cashing out your loot in the game.

Will the PDF have the spelling and price mistakes rectified? Especially given the extra time for the devs to sort it?

Nice. We "could" sell but we won´t. Because we CAN.
Finally a book I care for and then this. -.-

Liberty's Edge

@Patrick you do understand that shipping delays means they do not have them to sell right?

Liberty's Edge

I still don't understand what it says on the miniature market site.

Its says that its on pre order, that it has not been relased. But it also says they have 18 in stock? See the link on last page I posted.

Exactly! I was counting down the days until tomorrow. Now it'll be another week. Damn, I'm waiting on this book to fill out the treasure inside an ancient tomb I'm designing for my players.

Paizo doesn't sell PDFs until their retailers can sell physical copies of the book. Its a self imposed limitation as a gesture of goodwill towards the FLGS that help support the hobby. There was a delay in the physical copies getting to the retailers so the PDF is delayed also.

Wennalonn Fordaryde wrote:

The PDF counterpart to any Paizo product will reflect the printed version. Any errata will be added to the PDF as additional printings are released. Any errata discussed will not be reflected in the PDF at this point, since this is the first printing of this product.

What they have no pdf? ;)

I absolutly understand their self imposed restriction. But I also have the right to complain about this. I hate the constant delays and it bugs me that the product I want is already there (the pdf) and I can´t get it because someone hasn´t done their job at another product - the printing copy (be it the printing company, the shipping company or whatever).

Probably Minis Mart have received N preorders, and have ordered n+18 books from their distributor. Therefore they have 18 more that people can order, but they haven't actually arrived at their office.

The system will have evolved from the fact that they are originally a site for PPMs, so would have what they randomly got from the boxes to sell as singles, so the quantity can only be determined once they'd opened them, and tend to operate on a 'once they're gone, they're fully gone' principle

Vic has said that the PDFs will release on schedule. Someone quoted it upthread. Given that I assumed you were talking about the physical product.

Well now it says the PDF will be out on the 23rd, same as the new street date for the book.

Vic Wertz wrote:
Due to shipping delays, the retail release date for all of our August products is now August 23; the PDF onsale date is the same.

Which can be read one of two ways: the PDF onsale date is "the same" as it was before the delay of the retail release date, or the PDF onsale date is "the same" as the delayed retail release date. Given the available evidence, the second seems to be the correct reading: both PDFs and physical products are delayed by a week.

Lots of great object art, some of which I've seen in older products and item cards, but some of it I don't recognize. Any chance the new stuff will end up in a new set of item cards? Mundane Gear 3 or maybe Ultimate Equipment?

There's a *very* good chance that new art from this book will wind up in future Item Card sets.

Hmm, another reason to be glad I dropped my Pathfinder RPG sub - first printings from Paizo are always so full of mistakes! As per usual, I will grab the PDF next week and wait for a second printing version before I buy the physical version, I guess. Thanks for making the PDFs affordable and the free updates, guys - but maybe you should invest a bit more in technical editors in the future.

I've been reading this book quite a lot lately, and I've noticed a grand total of one error. Where are these supposed errors that plague the product so thoroughly? No one lists them, they just complain about them.

Perhaps I just have a different copy of the book than most of the complainers. Especially those who say there isn't a lot of new stuff. 44% of the melee weapon enhancements are new, and that's not counting the stuff that came out 2 months ago in ARG. There many entire pages I can look at with nothing but new stuff. I recognize 5 or 6 pre-existing items in the Chest section. Out of 28.

You should probably write a review saying as much then - all those of us who don't have it have to go by is the reviews, and they aren't positive at this point. After getting totally hosed on the APG first printing, I am VERY leery of buying on day one now, and if I see reviews saying it's full of errors, I am going to believe them.

This.

A majority of the errors listed in the errata thread are things like a letter missing, or an incorrect verb tense, etc. If these kinds of errors matter to you, then I suppose you are out of luck. For that matter, you are out of luck with EVERY book ever printed.

The book is of an awesome quality, and the utility for GMs is out of this world.

Glad to see people contradicting the reviews, but again - WRITE ONE if you think the reports are wrong. Right now 33% of the posted reviews say to wait for a second printing. Get that ratio down if you want people to actually believe you.

Because if they don't sell out of the first printing (because people are waiting for a second printing), then there's no reason to make a second printing. You do second printings when you run out of books :)

What I don't get are the claims that UE doesn't incorporate errata from older sourcebooks. I checked with the Core Rulebook and APG errata so far, and UE incorporates the errata from both books.

Most of the few errors in UE I have noticed are a couple pricing typos and the known issue of the random weapons table missing entries.

I do plan to write a review as soon as I get my print copy (I've been out so I haven't picked it up yet).

I agree, people either need to list true technical errors (specs, prices, etc) or quit saying it is "filled with errors".

Silver Crusade

Not only that, but stuff like sword cane being finessable (finally!) or staff prices brought in line.

And garrote from AA not being reprinted (I consider that an errata in itself :P)

The absolute only thing that disappointed me about this book was that the Agile weapon property didn't make it in. Other then that, I don't understand 99% of the whining people are doing about this book; there are inventive items for everyone, the book is well structured and very pretty to look at, and its a book about TREASURE. Is there any new weapon power that can give my crossbowman the ability to shoot his crossbow like a machine gun? maybe containing an extra-dimensional space in which he could store 100 bolts and access them at will shooting them like from a repeating crossbow?

(Question inspired by the quick loading weapon property from pg.41 of the 3.5 D&D Magic Item Compendium.)

I half recall a post by Mr. Jacobs basically pointing out that Dex to damage has only shown up in Campaign Setting stuff. Ah, found it.

Closest thing I found was the endless ammunition +2 weapon enchantment (only available to bows and crossbows). When you cock back the weapon, a non-magical arrow or bolt appears and can be fired. It doesn't reduce the time required to load/fire, and does still allow you to use your own ammunition as it disappears if you load another piece of ammo in it.

Characterizing the opinions of others as "whining" because you don't agree with them is not a productive course of action. Bear in mind this is an observation offered by someone who does not own UE and has therefore not offered any opinions of its contents.

People seem to have gotten some pretty high standards these days. Remember Sword and Fist or Tome and Blood, even after all these years I still have very fond memories of these B/W books. Were there mistakes and errata, of course - they are roleplaying game rulebooks not manuals for nuclear reactors.

I *still* don't understand why some people find typos offensive.
