Since the beginning, people have told stories of the monsters that stalk the night, lurking just beyond the town wall or the village’s edge. These are the creatures of myth and legend that have stood the test of time, which have entered everyday language and remained cultural touchstones for thousands of years. Now the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game goes hunting for 10 of these classic monsters, culled from among the greatest stories ever told.

Mythical Monsters Revisited explores the lives and societies of the most famous monsters of all time, drawn from the mythology of the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Aztecs, and others. Each monster entry features an extensive ecology exploring the creature’s biology and culture, notes on the monster’s real-world background, tips on how best to utilize the beast in your game, detailed overviews of the monster’s role in the Pathfinder campaign setting, and more.

Inside this book, you’ll find monsters like:
  • Medusas, the snake-headed banes of ancient Greece, who turn their enemies to stone with a glance.
  • Hydras, the many-headed serpents that grow two new heads for each one they lose.
  • Four types of sphinxes, from the riddle-loving gynosphinxes to the philosophical androsphinxes, the goat-headed criosphinxes, and the evil hawk-headed hieracosphinxes.
  • Harpies, the feral winged women whose siren songs lure adventurers to slaughter.
  • Phoenixes, who are reborn from their own ashes.
  • Couatls, the feathered serpents of Aztec myth who serve as messengers and servants of benevolent gods.
  • Other ancient terrors such as flesh-hungry wendigos, three-headed chimeras, leonine griffons, and the horrifyingly intelligent sea monsters called krakens.

Mythical Monsters Revisited is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and Pathfinder campaign setting, but can easily be used in any fantasy game setting.

Classic Monsters of Myth and D@D

5/5

I have alsways loved mythology, especially the monsters from those stories. In this book you find useful information for favorites such as the Hydra, Chimera, Griffon, Harpy, Kraken, Sphinx, Medusa, Couatl, and Phoenix. The types of information you will get will be cultural, ecological, treasure, goals, origins, and more. You also get some nice variants like a poisonous version of the hydra, an evil Phoenix, the origanal version of the Chimera to name a few. All in all I really like this book and I think other people also find as useful as I did. The only complaint I have is the inclusion of the Wendigo who is nether classic myth or D@D for me. But the good outways the bad and I still like this book, thank you Paizo.

These might be bad examples because I think the Rakshasa have already been further detailed and the Hound of Tindalos was just recently added to the system, but I stand by it!

Kyton is actually a class of outsiders, of which the chain 'devil' is only the most common...

Wow!
My good friend DJCherryPie told me there was buzz on the Phoenix. Sweet merciful crap I hope I don't disappoint and I can't wait to see how everyone else's sections turned out. It really was a great project to work on...

Not going to happen, I think. Unless they do a "Cthulhu Horrors Revisited" book. I'm not sure they're going to.

But you can always read up on the Mythos if you want to know more about the Hounds. It will only cost you some sanity, and who needs that?

Rakshasas and kytons both are outsider groups with multiple members by reputation and not much backing that up statistically yet. Rakshasas got a lengthy Ecology in Escape from Old Korvosa, which also had the five-headed rakshasa maharajah. The only other official kyton in Pathfinder is the ephialtes kyton in The Twice Damned-Prince, which is a nasty CR 16 abomination. In the 3PP market, if I may plug myself blatantly, the Creature Codex: Infernal Index has the CR 8 baboulas kyton, the illustration for which can be seen here. Think Scissor Man.

Back somewhat to topic, I am always in favor of more X Monsters Revisited, and I'm intrigued by the lineup here. Also, yes, more sphinxes please. The androsphinx and its weird roar are a D&D standby in my opinion. And I've had a very high opinion of heiracosphinxes after a random encounter in Legacy of Fire where my level 7 party fought seven of them. Loads of fun.

Of course, anything from Paizo with the word "Revisited" in the title is an automatic buy for me.

Actually the Kraken really winds me up something fierce. One of my most favorite, underused, monsters in the game. Just nasty, and i wonder if you guys might get some variant looks, non traditional perhaps more lovecraftian with it. I am not trying to flog a dead deep one here, and by no means am i beating the drum to death, but the whole tentacle undersea beast...and after the aboleth was nerfed into oblivion i hope these will become the new lords of the deep.
or something like that.

I wouldn't discount it so quickly, and naturally I've read the story. Reading Lovecraft is the best way to lose SAN.

Yes, I'm still trying to find the stats for the mysterious Leon varient. :-)

The Kraken is great but the Phoenix is the underused one on this list. I am so happy it got to be in this book since monsters like the Basilisk, Gorgon, Cockatrice, Hippogriff, or unicorn would be more likely choices.

Great news!

"chimera, couatl, harpy, kraken, medusa, sphinx"

Guess I should put off making those npcs…

I have always wanted to see some variant Griffons, combining other birds and cats.

Raven/ Panther
Owl/ Snow Leopard
Falcon/ Cheetah
Vulture/ Cougar
Osprey/ Tiger
Condor/ Jaguar
Parrot/ Ocelot
Kestrel/ Lynx

And for a Dire Griffon :D
Blood Hawk/ Liger or
Terror Bird/ Saber-tooth

The only way this book would look better to me would be if it replaced couatls with the lamia. Or have they already been covered elsewhere?

But yes, this is seriously cool-looking.

Any chance we'll get to see the Gorgohydra variant in this book James?

I can remember writing a note into the back of my paperback copy of 'At the Mountains of Madness'(Vol.1) listing how many dice of SAN loss you experienced for reading it cover to cover.(hey I was 17)

I would rather see the Gorgimera.

Variant animal combinations for the chimera and griffon would be cool.

the male version of the medusa.

the clash of the titans version of the medusa.

Bah! The Gorgohydra would crush your Gorgimera beneath it's armor plated hooves! ^_~

I'm not a big fan of the chimeric monsters beyond the chimera. Things like a gorgohydra or a mantimera or a basigriff aren't nearly as interesting to me as brand new creatures or creatures from mythology.

I dunno, James is a pretty huge Lovecraft fan, and from what I gather several other Paizo people are as well. I would put money on there eventually being a "Mythos Horrors Revisited" type book.

Ohh i might have money!!!!

Well insane alchemists and wizards have to create SOMETHING in their spare time besides Golems don't they? :P

Besides, what's not to love about a 5 headed armor plated huge trampling petrifying gas breathing monstrosity with fast healing? ^_~

OMG! Mantimera? Basigriff? Awesome stuff? My players had better watch out! I foresee spike ridden stone statues in their futures. ^_^

Personally I'm all Lovecraft'd-out! Enough with Chuthulu's ilk! They've received plenty of love so far and can take a little break for now! Let's see some new monsters (from Native American, Christan, Indian, or Asian mythology) or combinations of old monsters (aka the Gorohydra, Gorgimera, Mantimera, or Basigriff)! ^_^

I'm pretty sure that's a mock-up cover; I think that chimera art is from an interior piece in Kingmaker #4: Blood for Blood.

That said, I can personally guarantee that the chimera section is gonna be AWESOME!!! :)

So what you're saying is that the real cover is going to have two chimerae fighting Amiri? Yay!

Nothing against Jason, but after the past ten or so episodes of 3.5 Private Sanctuary, I find it a bit hard to take the chimera serious.

A Lamashtan planar ally that's an extraplanar disease-bearing mixture of a giant vulture and a hyaenodon could be funky and thematic.

A 'reverse' owlbear that's a great horned owl with the backend of a bear could also be cool as an improved familiar.

I hope there is variant for a poisonous Hydra and electrical breath weapon Hydra.

Some fun alternate Chimera compinations.

Atractive version of a Harpy.

clash of the titans version of the Medusa(Greater Medusa).

Some alternate compinations for Griffons.

A weaker version of the Wendigo(CR6-10).

The history/origins of these creatures.

Alternate versions of the Shinx, Kraken, Couatl, and Phoenix.

Awesome Chimera with feathered wings and what looks like a manticore's tail.

chimera according to numbers and alphabetical order. So either a baby chimera or some unexpected combination of critters that leads to a cute amalgam. :)

Again, really happy couatls are in this. They've needed futher exploration for a long time.

Still really hoping the sapient creatures have some non-evil possibilities explored, especially the poor medusa(seriously, the most unjustly maligned mythical being ever. Ancient Greek values are pretty screwed up).

Earth Pony/Pegasus/Unicorn chimera!

Like the cover it's about time Valeros got something heroic..there's been a tendency to show him being crass or getting his ass kicked. Also nice to see him on a cover without Seoni who has been a little overused recently.

Seoni is never overused.

Eath Pony/Pegasus/Unicorn Chimera oh man I can not stop laughing on that one.

Bunny/kitten/puppy chimera is definitly a possibility.

Oops I meant spell it Earth Pony not "Eath".

I still wondering what could be so cute in this book.

Will we see varaints for the Pheonix?

Will any of the monsters have class levels?

The cover art has been updated( a while ago) but what about the descripton/information section?
