Hey guys, I'm trying to raise funds for Wayfinder 3 and my PaizoCon trip and I'm putting all my originals from Sunken Empires (and some other KQ products) in here
Check it out, at least to see how the sketch looks like ;P
This is great! I was planning to try to find you this week to get the dunkleosteus, and now I find that image is together with my poor little fey who got the axe. E-mailing you now.

I ordered a copy after buying groceries for the week. With shipping it will cost me a little over $20 to have a hard copy shipped to my greedy paws. I'm going to ask this in another forum as well, but could you make a magic item that includes the spells Water Breathing and Freedom of Movement and have it be considered a low level magic item or would it need to be at least a medium magic item?

For a while I debated making the PDF patron-only, but in the end that's just going to annoy people.
So, as mentioned in the store blog post above, the PDF will be available in June (roughly when From Shore to Sea ships).
All you are doing by holding the PDF is telling people like me who rarely buy dead tree editions (other than my Paizo subs) anymore, that you don't want my business. Sorry to hear that. The product looks interesting but it isn't enough for me to come back and give you my money after you made me wait.
Moving on.

Now, Mr. Gamez, that's no way to be.
The patrons of Open Design paid for the privilege of getting the first look at the pdf. If a new album came out from one of your favorite bands, would you not buy that album if you discovered that fan club members got to hear it a few weeks before it was available in stores? Patrons signed up early, paid their dues, contributed to design and have waited patiently for months to see the end results, and I do hope you'll excuse them the luxury of enjoying the fruits of their labor. The fact that it is even available to the public is a new step for us here, as Open Design typically carries more exclusivity to patrons, so I do hope you'll pardon this seeming slight.
Meanwhile, we'll be getting the pdf ready for public consumption, as the work on the document didn't start until after the book went to print, and not the other way around. I do hope you'll check back when it is ready for you and pick up a copy, as it really is a beautiful book. I'd hate for you to miss out, because it seems to have intrigued you enough to post.
Sincerely (really),
-B.

Well, it's an experiment. If it works, great. If it doesn't work, this release suffers, but future releases benefit from having tried it.
Publishing models are in flux. Failure to experiment is deadly to small press publishers.
EDIT TO ADD: As Brandon says so much more eloquently than I, the PDF is already available to patrons. Seems only fair.

It seems pretty reasonable to me to make it a part of the patronage experience. I certainly don't begrudge patrons their extras. I'm just thrilled the final products now are available to non-patrons.

Like wise. Already ordered the hardcopy; looking forward to it! And I also have to agree, the patrons should get get their perks ahead of those who didn't participate. After all, they did put up their money and time for the product in the first place. The rest of us should only be fortunate we get to share in its goodness after all is said and done. :D

Check it out!
Whether you've already purchased Sunken Empires or are curious about the sort of materials it contains, I encourage everyone to head to Kobold Quarterly every day this week and check out the great spells, magic items, lost technology and monsters that didn't quite make it into the pages of Sunken Empires. Awesome material that we just couldn't fit on the barge without sinking it, including selections by Stefen Styrsky, Bill Collins, Ian Turner and Adam Daigle!
Today, Go to FIVE great spells were posted that you'll definitely want to find room for in your campaigns and on your character sheets. Print 'em out and tuck 'em into the back pages of Sunken Empires and your volume will be complete!
Then take over the world's oceans. Bwahahahaha.

Oh, I do B&W because that's what is requested from me, and honestly, I think B&W is my "strong" side, since I'm too far away from color decently for a publication the size of Open Design... I still need lots of practice!
I love your sepia work, but yeah, your B&W stuff rocks. Sometimes adding color to a complicated picture (particularly a character portrait with lots of gear and finicky little armor segments) just seems to clutter it up.

Stone Strike should explicitly state what sort of action is required to direct the stone to attack. That's probably my bad...

Set wrote:Stone Strike should explicitly state what sort of action is required to direct the stone to attack. That's probably my bad...So what action is required? Requiring minds want to know.
From my original text;
On any round where you choose not to take an attack sequence (either a single attack as a standard action or a full attack as a full-round action), the stone remains floating adjacent to your person, unless dispelled or destroyed, until the spells duration is ended. As part of a full-round action, if the stone has sufficient BAB to make multiple attacks, these attacks can be on different foes, so long as all remain within Close range of your person.
I'm not sure how applicable that would be, as this version of Stone Strike is somewhat different than my original version. I tend to overcomplicate things, and I think the rewrite may have gone a couple of words overboard in making it less persnickety. :)

I think it would be wise to admit that this all could (should) be much [i] clearer in the product description, above.
Regardless of what those (over-)close to Open Design think, the whole patron thing is pretty freaky-weird to the non-initiated.

Hey Arnwyn!
I'm not quite sure I see any confusion in the product description, or anything weird in general, as patronage isnt' part of the equation here. Simply put, Sunken Empires is a product now available for anyone to order, with another product (the pdf version) available in a couple of weeks.
That's pretty much it. My quoted statements were just clarifications to a particular customer upset that the pdf wasn't yet available, and I tried to explain why it wasn't. Patrons simply got first look at the pdf while it is being prepared, and it will be available as soon as it is ready. That's all I was explaining.
Or is there something I'm missing that might otherwise be causing confusion? I promise I'll try to explain it clearly! Otherwise, this is a new product, and anyone interested can order it. =-)
-Brandon
PS: My hard copies just made it to me. Holy CRAP what a beautiful book, guys and gals!

I'd mimic the mechanic for spiritual hammer, just for consistency's sake. It's pretty close to that effect, but arcane. I like it.

Good to know I am planning to get the pdf when it's available and it is certainly reasonable to allow early access to patrons, just wanted to be sure non-patrons would be able to get the pdf, so thanks for clearing that up.

Anyone else who pre-ordered through KQ still waiting for their print edition to arrive? My order was in weeks ago, and seeing that some people have gotten their book already I always worry that my local post office has once again fouled something up.

I don't think it could have been in "weeks ago," as the print edition was only made available on the 10th-- but even so. I put in my order at KQ.com on the 11th and mine hadn't yet crossed the country. Usually, I see stuff in about three days, but nothing yet. I figure I'll see it tomorrow or Tuesday, depending.

And yet, my receipt for the print edition is from April 26, three weeks ago tomorrow. Maybe I used magic to order it before the 10th of May. <sigh>
At least I don't have to worry as much for the time being that it's lost. Gracias.

I'm pretty sure Sunken Empires was available for pre-order for a few weeks before it was finally available to ship from the warehouse on the 10th. You're both right! =-)

I can confirm that all Sunken Empires pre-orders over at the Kobold Quarterly store were shipped the day that the book came in from the printer: Monday, April 10.
If you don't have it by Friday, please do contact the kobold minions for a replacement copy.

Right—Paizo has nothing to do with the execution of Open Design's patronage program, or with the fulfillment of any patronage product, in print or otherwise. (We don't even know who the patrons are.)
All we know is that we're selling print copies on consignment right now, and we will be selling a PDF version as soon as Wolfgang makes it available for sale.
And to clear up any notions about a 15% discount on this product here, Open Design is not currently offering a discount on this product through paizo.com to patrons or to anyone else; the discount that people have been talking about is the Pathfinder Advantage discount that Paizo offers to our Pathfinder Adventure Path subscribers, which applies to about 10,000 products here at paizo.com (including the print edition of this product).

![]() |

Can I get me a print copy at PaizoCon? Imperial Gazetteer too?
YES! And you can get signatures from me, Brandon, and Scott if we humble designers can get your signature on our copies. :)
Vic, thanks for the clarification on the discount and the (perhaps too obvious?) point that Open Design handles the patron shipments etc.

I'm more than a little annoyed at Open Design right now, at least when it comes to shipping through Paizo. I added this book into my subscriptions so now I'm off on the weird "gotta wait all week till we unlock your PDFs" queue for Pathfinder 33, ON TOP OF still having to wait for this book itself.
It had better be worth it, darn it! :)
