Allow me to continue to play devil's advocate. In our world - western part of it, anyway - title of emperor has it's origins in Roman Empire. There were only two emperors - of East and West, and after the fall of Constantinopol only the Holy Roman Emperor (of German people) remained. Eventually, the Russian rulers became inheritors of the Eastern Roman emperors. British rulers gained imperial title because of their possession of India and territories of ancient Mogul empire and their imperial title doesn't have anything to do with the politics of European continent. In the western world wars were fought over possession of the imperial title. Kings of Prussia warred with the rest of German peoples in order to unite them in one state, but to become emperors as well. Napoleon fought with Habsburgs so that he could be sole Emperor of Europe. To conclude: there is enormous prestige in the imperial title. Emperor is way above king.
In the Western world, yes. That is not necessarily the case in Golarion where there is no Roman Emperor.
Besides, Asmodeus is the Prince of Darkness, not the Emperor. Would you want to be one-upping your divine patron in that way? Especially one like Asmodeus? Really?

Don't forget, she's also like twelve years old or so.
Twelve? Damn she sure looks older in that picture...
Consulting the sources, I only find her being called a "child empress", but no specific age reference.
So, how old is she really supposed to be? From the picture I'd guess 14-16 at least?

The official title of Cheliax's young ruler is according to p.68 of PFCS:
Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune
Yeah, I know. But it would sound a lot better like this: Her Infernal Majestrix, Empress Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune. Empires should have empresses, by the Asmodeus.

You might think Queen Liz' title is long but you don't want to know how terriby wrong it would all go if she ended her relationship with Merioneth!
I've just looked them up; they've got a pretty cool coat of arms! I'm sure that all of creation would implode, or Prince Phil's resulting comments would make us wish that it would...

Queen Abrogail is actually in her early 20s, she's not a "child ruler," despite how the PFCS describes her.
ALERT: TO ALL EAGLE KNIGHTS STATIONED IN CHELIAX
Infant Immortality revoked. The brat is fair game. Repeat. The brat is fair game. Happy hunting and godspeed. Over.
I have to admit though, thinking a dangerous kid held the keys to the kingdom did make things slightly more terrifying than they already were.

Infant Immortality revoked.
Yeah. Now she just has "pact with the devil immortality". Oh, and her Imperial Assassins.
I have to thank you for your frantic shouting, though: Three of those chicken knights were so excited by this that they dropped their cover.
Expect them back soon. In a week. To start with. You might get them back completely. Eventually.
It's interesting to watch her Highness work...

Nope. She doesn't really have much of a role to play in Council of Thieves at all.

We don't have those either. Although I suspect that Charisma is her highest stat.

They took the bait, sir. It should be a few days before they sort out that they've actually culled their own spies from our ranks. We'll press the advantage during that time. E.K.53 out.

So then we can assume either Bard or Sorcerer for her class... unless she's just an aristocrat with a contract with a pit fiend or two. Or eight.
She doesn't quite seem the cleric or blackguard type.
nightflier |
Perhaps she's a witch and Infernal Lords of Paizo's editorial pit are waiting to publish new base classes before they stat her? Oh, well... I'll just assume Cha at least 20 and high Int. (Reason why I'm asking this is because I'll be playing young officer in Imperial Legions, who's fallen in love with his empress. From afar, of course.)

Emperor.
Kings of Prussia warred with the rest of German peoples in order to unite them in one state, but to become emperors as well.
Even though the Willhelm I was Emperor of the German Empire, he remained King of Prussia.

Well, of course. That was his power base. Victoria remained Queen of England even after she became the Empress of India. That stands to reason. But - is there a Kingdom of Cheliax which gave birth to a larger Empire of Cheliax? If there is, I stand corrected. If not - Cheliax should be ruled by an Empress, for Asmodeus's sake!
Btw, Wikipedia is dow, but here's what Brittanica has to say:
Title of the sovereigns of the ancient Roman empire and, by derivation, various later European rulers, also applied to certain non-European monarchs. Caesar Augustus was the first Roman emperor. Byzantine emperors ruled at Constantinople until 1453. Charlemagne became the first of the Western emperors (later Holy Roman emperors) in 800. After Otto I became emperor in 962, only German kings held the title. In other parts of Europe, monarchs who ruled multiple kingdoms (e.g., Alfonso VI, who ruled Léon and Castile) sometimes took the title emperor. Napoleon's assumption of the title, as a putative successor of Charlemagne, was a direct threat to the Habsburg dynasty. Queen Victoria of Britain took the title empress of India. Non-European peoples whose rulers have been called emperor include the Chinese, Japanese, Mughals, Incas, and Aztecs.

Even though the Willhelm I was Emperor of the German Empire, he remained King of Prussia.
No, Wilhelm I wanted to become the Emporer of Germany, of course, but Bismarck did not - and so he became the German Emporer. The title "Emporer of Germany" could have been understood as if Germany was the private property of Wilhelm, and it could have been understood as claim for all German speaking territories which were not part of the German Empire like Switzerland, Austria, parts of Nothern Italy, etc. Bismarck as clever diplomat knew which complications could arise from choosing the wrong title, and so he forced his monarch to accept the title "German Emperor and King of Prussia".

Thanks, Yoda. Search is coming up with nothing. Is this his first cover? Another artist who's good with the action shot.
I have seen his art before, but I'm not sure on which products. His web page is here: http://www.mattdixon.co.uk

Vic, the bookmarks on this are simply "front cover", "back cover" and "guts." Would it be possible to get chapter bookmarks when you guys get the chance? Since you have nothing else going on at all.
I'll get that going.

I liked it too.. Dixon's cover that is.
Looks like the iconics got a little mixed up, but that doesn't bother me. In fact, if that is Merisiel I congratulate her on not appearing like a beetle.
Mixed up? What, can't a girl wear a new outfit now and then, especially after visiting a new town?

Greetings everyone...
I just want to tell the crew, who detailed this wonderful place called Cheliax, that not only did you give me what I wanted, (which I didnt get from Qadira), but you surpassed it by 200%.
Wow!
I might have to make a pact with Asmodeus so I can get you guys to make a Cheliax Part Duex!!
I would go into a detailed list of what I liked, but no one would read it due to length.
I have absolutely no negative feedback on this product at all. (I never look for it, but sometimes it happens...)
Thanks again Paizo. I have been sated for my love of LE for weeks to come.

I have a fluff-related question here: if Cheliax is ruled by the Church of Asmodeus, then why do they allow good gods and their churches like Erastil and Iomedae to operate openly?
It must be annoying when those meddling paladins of Iomedae start preaching a crusade against the Grotto of Asmodeus just down the way.

This is explained in the book in a very logical way... and paladins of Iomedae try to keep lower profile in Cheliax than elsewhere! (The few that didn't me and Kae sent to the care of our good friends in the Order of the Rack!)

Its also pretty easy to see Lawful neutral worshipers of these deities in Cheliax as well. Erastil is the guy that looks after "peasant concerns" that are beneath Asmodeus, and if his followers are mainly LN in Cheliax, heck, they are mainly going to be preaching about protecting the home and bringing in the crops.
Similarly, Iomedae's LN followers are going to be preaching maintaining the status quo, since upsetting things might make things worse. Iomedae even has the added bonus of being Chelaxian. "See what can happen if you grow up right and are a proper Chelaxian citizen."
Of course, in Cheliax, you can't contradict the the church of Asmodeus, so, for example, when the priests of Asmodeus are telling everyone on Ascension Day that Asmodeus "allowed" Iomedae to become a goddess to help protect Cheliax and inspire the locals, you have to be careful how you present the "authentic" version of the holiday.
