The pause in the Campaign Setting line has a lot less to do with Starfinder than it has to do with one of our September releases, which will be announced soon.
Ooooh, nice! A second Campaign Setting hardcover this year! That explains why the Inner Sea Faction Guide was bumped over to the RPG line!

![]() |

The strongest possibility is a 96 page softcover, like last years "Inner Sea Faiths" (i think that was what it was called).
A 200-something pages hardcover is possible, but less so because of Starfinders need for additional developers.
It COULD be something for the 10th Anniversary of Pathfinder, if it is, i hope for a VARISIA product (Boxed set!). ;-)

Intriguing!

I really think they have talked enough about the unviability of boxed set that we can accept that no such sets will be forthcoming.

And before somebody goes "but Beginner Box!" - BB was a loss leader.

On one hand, it doesn't take a genius to see that $35 is too cheap for all the content of the Beginner Box.
On the other hand, the first printing sold out and a second one was produced.
Why issue a 2nd printing if a product is a "loss leader"?
Something seems not right with that argumentation.
A financially sound boxed set of say Varisia, including a 96 pages softcover book of the region for the GM ($25), four 32 pages reprint gazetteers of Korvosa, Magnimar, Riddleport and Sandpoint for players ($10 each because no new material is needed) and five poster maps of the cities mentioned plus one of Varisia (all of them already produced in past map folios ($25) plus the box itself ($10) would add up to $100, which could be going down to $80 depending on print run numbers.
Is this something for everyone - no, probably not.
Would i buy it - in a heartbeat.

To get people into the game.

Loss leader = pricing strategy where a product is sold at a price below its market cost to stimulate other sales of more profitable goods or services. Economics!
In case of RPGs, beginner boxes are evergreen loss leaders you put out to get new people in the game. You lose on them, but you hopefully gain more from purchases made by people brought into the hobby.

Paizo isn't "big" enough to produce products it looses money on imo.
I don't think there is a rpg producing company nowadays which does that.I could be wrong though.

Actually, now that I think of it, BB might have been a VERY slim earner. Much slimmer than any other Paizo product, which still means that the only way it got made at this price point is that it is an entry product.

Which costs participating stores LOTS of money.
Only participating players get stuff for free.

Ha, I found the elusive "whai no Boxed sets, Paizo?" thread with Vic's elaboration on the topic.
Thanks for the link.
Nice to see that my $80 assumption wasn't far off.I know that box sets (or anything that has a higher price than average) doesn't sell as many copies than normal priced books.
But in the case of both Varisia (where almost all artwork and text has already been paid for and just needs to be compiled) and an Anniversary or specialty product (look at how fast the Curse of the Crimson Throne limited edition hardcover for $75 sold out), the story is a little different imo.
When i look at the "Call of Cthulhu: Horror on the Orient Express" boxed set for $120, some board games with comparable stuff inside or even a "Bestiary Box" for $45, i see that these things constantly sell pretty good.
Just sayin.

Bestiary Box has no words and uses mostly recycled art, so production costs and times are considerably lower.
I can imagine Paizo doing a 120 USD boxed set, I can't imagine myself buying it. Like Ptolus or City of Brass, it's a niche item for turbo-dedicated fans. Which brings us to the old question: do you want to use your resources to make one low ROI product, or 5 high ROI products with wider distribution channels?

Note that September would be around the right time to release another hardback in the core line, assuming that the Starfinder Core Rulebook has not taken that slot away from Pathfinder.

The stores pay Impressions Game Distribution Services, the company that runs Free RPG Day. None of that money comes back to the publisher; it's all cost for us, and that cost is exactly equal to the cost of producing the product and delivering it to Impressions. We aim to recoup that cost by selling additional copies on paizo.com afterwards.
That said, the Campaign Setting subscription thread really isn't the best place for this discussion, so if you'd like to follow it up, please start a new thread in a more appropriate place.

So it looks like we won´t get a new Campaign Setting product in AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER, after not getting anything in march, april and may (due to starfinder)?
Really?
So far, the only two books in the line in 2017 are "Lands of Conflict" and "Aquatic Adventures"!
Color me VERY disappointed.
Vote with your wallet: don't buy them.

I'm pretty much aware that it's reasonable for this line to take a break with so many major products being released this year (Starfinder, Bestiary 6, Adventure Guide, and even Book of the Damned Hardcover), and for that we can't talk about "diminished development".
But what Marco is afraid of is something I do understand, however.
I wouldn't like to see the Campaign Setting line diminishing to four or five releases per year, as it's my favorite product line. As a writer and big fan of fantasy setting, I really love reading about Golarion, its races and places, faiths and organizations, intrigues and mysteries. This is THE line that made Pathfinder get so much love, as we get dozens of contents each month - from adventure hooks to some player options and even new foes in the bestiary section.
That said, I'm also unhappy to see that we aren't getting that many books this year. It's not like I'm disappointed, but I can't actually be "pleased" with less products in my favorite line, right? Its just that we really love the Campaign Setting books.
I suppose this is only because there was a need to invest efforts in the major releases of the year, and they are actually worth it! Adventure Guide and BotD Hardcover are full of setting contents, and Starfinder is a completely new setting for us to explore.

David knott 242 |

This line already had two "filler" products each year (the adventure path map folios) that made it undesirable for me to keep up that subscription -- so I suppose that if any product line has to suffer, I guess I prefer it to be this one rather than one that I would otherwise buy every volume of.

The Gold Sovereign |

The point is, the hardcovers released this year are all heavily related to setting. It's not like we are not getting setting related material for an entire year...
- Bestiary 6, with demigods and monsters from the setting.
- Adventurer's Guide, with organization from the setting.
- Book of the Damned, with planes and demigods from the setting.
- Starfinder, a whole new setting related to Pathfinder.
Subscribers are going to suffer, however, the amount of setting related hardcovers are already worth all this "suffering". XD

A few setting hardcover books with about 250 - 300 pages instead of 10 softcover books with about 60 pages... fine with me. If campaign setting books are mainly published as parts of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game subscription line in the future, I'll have to think about subscribing for that instead of the campaign setting line though.

Removed a handful of posts. Folks, please understand that phrasing information about our products as if you are an authority can be misleading to our customers, and makes the job of our employees to present/clarify information about those products more difficult. It's also somewhat out of place in this particular thread.

I'm guessing it's getting very unlikely now. If an Azlant book was going to come out, the best time to release it was during the Ruins of Azlant when interest was at an all time high. If they didn't release it then, I'm going to guess that it's getting increasingly unlikely as interest wanes over time from that AP. :(

I would settle for a nice map. They did a beautiful on for the Shackles that had strange monsters and coffee stains on it. A map I do not have to try to make would be wonderful. I am not an artist :(
In one of the forewords the developer mentions that they played with the possibility of doing a campaign setting, but ultimately decided against it, because they didn't wanted to limit the individual developers imaginations.
I believe it was mentioned, that it was a possibility for the future, as the best outcome of the AP is a beginning re-colonialization effort for all the ruins of Azlant. This is all from my memory of course and may be wrong, but i think it is correct. ;-)

The primary reason that I didn't do an Azlant gazetteer-style book for the Ruins of Azlant is that one of the major themes of the Adventure Path was exploring terra incognita, and I felt that a book that detailed the ruins would diminish that impact. I also didn't want to 100% nail down the history of the location in order to allow GMs to customize their tables' experiences.

They have separated out the two products as starting points for the subscriptions, but there seems to be a bug -- people who selected the Lost Omens World Guide as their starting product are apparently getting the Druma book as their first product instead.
If you are wanting to start your subscription with the Lost Omens World Guide, you might want to hold off until they get this bug fixed.

If we start with a back ordered product because we want the pdf and the book, will the next in line ship as normal with the next sub even if we are waiting for the World Guide to be restocked?
