Gnome Ranger and Kukris

Rules Discussion

Does a Gnome Ranger require Gnome Weapon Familiarity feat to be able to use Kukris or not?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's a Martial weapon, so you can use, but it's uncommon so you will have to find it in game or ask your DM to have it at the start if you don't use the feat.

I dislike the notion that a Gnome could gain Weapon Familiarity to buy kukris, then retrain out of that feat for something else.

But yeah, you can bypass whatever your GM has to say about obtaining uncommon items through Weapon Familiarity. With GM approval you could say they are from <insert nation here> where kukris are common weapons or you meet a merchant from such a place who was willing to sell you a couple.

I have some strong feelings about the accessibility (aka rarity) of certain equipment and knowledge in the game but I don't have to get into that.

This question got me reading gnome weapon familiarity.

Quote:

You favor unusual weapons tied to your people, such as blades with curved and peculiar shapes. You are trained with the glaive and kukri.

In addition, you gain access to all uncommon gnome weapons. For the purpose of determining your proficiency, martial gnome weapons are simple weapons and advanced gnome weapons are martial weapons.

This makes a gnome Trained with the Kukri, but doesn't give access (like it does for gnome weapons). That means that a kukri-wielding gnome would still need some way to get access to the weapon, apart from taking this feat for proficiency? Is that correct?

Indeed. You may be proficient it Kukris, but they are not Gnome weapons so you so shouldn't get automatic access.
Of course, rarity is entirely is in the hands of your GM anyway.
