The Story of Rowland, Hand of Desna:
Rowland is the name a young, scrappy half-orc chose from the book collection of one Esme Teli, a wandering priestess of Desna who saw the youngster wandering about near Tamrivena as she made her way to the Hungry Mountains in her meandering quest for the Seven Towers. She took him in, teaching him to read from the small collection of books and scrolls she had and eventually inducting him into the faith. He was born to be a shaman and has the tattoos to prove it. After the tribe was scattered to the winds he had followed his dreams to the nearest human settlement. When he was inducted into Desna's faithful, he tattooed her holy symbol under his left eye in an attempt to reconcile who he was born to be with who he has become. Rowland left Esme's company near the mountains as he felt the strangest urge to head to the border of the country of his origin, maybe his destiny lies in being a half-breed on the border of Ustalav and Belkzen, maybe his father's tribe was invading and his destiny was to stop it, maybe it was something else. Mechanics: I plan to make a full alias later, but the plan is a full warpriest of Desna, geared toward the High Priest role, self-buffing melee DPR and secondarily healing. Definitely good-aligned and well-meaning but with a bit of a complex about orcs and his heritage.
Submitting play application for Either game, Runelords if you make me pick one: Moi: I'm new to these forums and don't have much experience with PBP in general, I'm just kind of picking things up as I go. I've been playing TTRPGs since 3.5 when I was in junior high. I like a decent balance of roll and role play: I don't want to do nothing but roll dice, but I also enjoy feeling pretty badass. I'm not keen on out-and-out PVP in most circumstances, but I enjoy a bit of personal conflict in the "paladin doesn't want the rogue to steal" sense. Basically, nobody should be rolling dice in those situations unless it's an actual PVP game. I don't think from what I've seen super sandbox games are a good fit for the online format, because it's harder to feel engaged with a silent block of text than in-person gaming. I plan to post at least once a day, typically afternoon-to-evening pacific time. I don't have a record of role play here (being new), but one character I'm particularly proud of was for a friend's original campaign setting: he was a ranger that was a former guerilla leader fighting against the encroaching enemy empire but was sold out and left for dead in the wilderness. Rather than being all gung-ho "I will have my revenge" I elected to make him more of a "shell shocked" character. He had a few compulsions such as trapping a door with a bell and sleeping with his greatsword unsheathed under his blanket, just in case. The quirks could be either comedic or dramatic and he was a versatile character.
I tend to start relatively sparse with my characters and fill in gaps as inspiration strikes during the story. Nothing mechanical, but if in Runelords we run into Ameiko I might decide that my bard got into music because he saw her playing one night or something. I find that this allows the character to engage with the setting more and doesn't require me to write an entire novel just to explain how my level 1 fighter ended up in the Sandpoint guard or whatever. Lastly, I love gestalt, I love versatile characters and I think the three person party sounds super interesting, so I hope you will pick me.
All right, I'll hold off on making an alias until I'm (hopefully) selected. This is a summary of Jace Rayne, Occult Investigator extraordinaire! Opening Narration:
[i]I'm Jace Rayne, PI to the weird. Nana always told me to fear the rougarou, a vicious, bloodthirsty wolfman that was attracted to the sound of children's laughter after sundown. Since I was old enough to make my own decisions, Nana told me my mere went to the most magical place in the country, the city of Crossroads. Being New Orleans natives, voodoo and cajun catholicism and other mysterious creatures such as Swamp Witches and the Lutin were all part of my upbringing and influence the way I see magic even today.
Since Mere up and vanished, I'd been building me the skills and knowledge to find her in Crossroads. I only inherited a spattering of my family's magic and use it to find those things that other PIs scoff at. You saw a wolfman take your baby boy? I'll look for it. Found a mysterious rune painted on your door? I know who wrote that and what you need to do to keep your family safe. Regular PIs don't do "the bizarre," but that's on my business card. I'm not too insecure to admit my weaknesses, I have three: red wine, dark coffee, and running away from literally anything that can take more than one bullet or a mystic bolt. I'm a detective, not a hitman, not a soldier. I ain't fighting anything that I can't beat. I've only been in Crossroads about a fortnight, but I'm still peeved that I haven't located my mere yet. This town is a serious meat grinder, with the vampires and werewolves and evil dwarves. I suppose it's not so different from where I came from. People round here seem to only accept a "no" if it's backed up with force, and a "please" if it's backed up with a pile of money. I don't know if she's here, but even if she's not, it's a place where I don't have to hide my magic, but it's still been useful for me to hide it when I have a contract with the Concerned Citizens. I used to hate them and their paranoia, but they make useful clients. |
