Somewhere there is a perfect world where the people who DM constantly and just want a taste of playing are able to live in harmony with their DMPCs. That world is not our own sadly, and DMPCs are a terrible idea 99% of the time. Even with the best intentions, anything beyond an occasional NPC dipping their toes in the pool with the PCs is asking for a bad game, disaster at the worst. This video has some great points(Matt Colville ALWAYS DOES!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqth2dFlIzQ Specifically his comments on how to interact with the party as an NPC fighting alongside them(@about 16mins into the vid)

Soon as I read "-Real time with turn based combat" I started to get all uppity because for years I've felt all the great games that could have been turn based/grid have instead been made turn based but Real time, but then I read the "(real time optional)" and calmed down Lol.
1 - Turn-Based, Grid Combat(Think Final Fantasy Tactics) 4-6 Party Members active (with maybe another 6 in reserve, or even infinite amount) Fully Customizable or Player Character Fully Custom with partially Customizable well fleshed out party members. This would be my dream game. 2 - Skyrimfinder - This would be a great way to explore different nations, and the ability to join PFS/Hellknights/Etc. would be AWESOME. And the endless options for crafting a character in PF would make for a game with tons of replayability in theory. 3 - A "Witcher-esque" game with a mostly pre-determined character identity, perhaps like Dragon Age you could select between several pre-sets, though part of what makes the Witcher's storytelling so tight and engaging is using a pre-written character imo. Would be a great chance to delve deep into a single nation and it's politics, this is where I think a game based in Cheliax would REALLY shine(though it would be my first choice for any style PF game!)
I think it's pretty common sense that anything that doesn't explicitly say it can be used on Starships/Starship Weapons/ETC., can't be used on them. I'm not saying there is no room for thought on the matter, and some people certainly will allow/disallow anything not explicitly spelled out, but I really think the developers intention is clear. Same goes for the 'Does Far Shot Apply' thread, seems obvious to me that it's not intended to.
What I find most troubling about this book, and of course the Shifter specifically is not that is poorly written, contradictory, and is appears to have been written by 5 different people in separate rooms. No my concern is that Paizo is an amazing company that makes thousands of awesome products that I LOVE, but it is no secret that 5e is flourishing amongst those who desire a simpler chassis for gaming, and PF marches on with it's fans who adore the freedom and choice presented to it's players(myself included). Now we are literally told that Shifter is a dud because people didn't want to have choices. I'd rather believe that you are lying than to think that is actually the reality of the situation
I would definitely get a consensus from the other players on how they feel about having this going on in the game, mostly in regards to dealing with a potentially hostile player/pc. The tables are a neat idea I suppose, though it seems really severe for RP, while also potentially stripping any organic feeling it might have had. I'm not a fan rolling for reactions/etc in general simply because I prefer to RP more "au natural". I would recommend using the tables as a guideline rather than a hard ruleset. These are very serious penalties in some cases, solely for the sake of RP, something you could simply choose to do, or represent in other non-mechanical ways.
Sounds like his singular concern is the narrative for the campaign. Which is easily in the top 5 worst DM issues. Though it's possible that his players are just on the rails of the story like a video game. In my experience the only players who don't mind that type of campaign are ones who haven't played any other kind.
Doing damage in a campaign, and with a party of characters that are built more around flavor/roleplaying/etc. you could get away with taking just a couple combat based feats like Deadly Aim, Rapid Shot, Etc. --- If you are playing with people who optimize their characters based on combat rules/tactics, you should petition to completely re-write your character for all the reasons stated by others above.
I really wish the people who submit reviews would come back down to Earth a bit. I appreciate them taking the time and resources to acquire the books for review, but these reviews for the Companion splat books are out of control. Singing the highest praises and gushing about how amazing it is, is just such an over the top reaction. Yes I like the book too, but I'm not planning on having children with it! ;)
Sorry but I can't abide by the banning of firearms, there are not enough good reasons to do so, and the bad judgment of a few is never a good reason to punish the masses. People who want to hurt others will always find a way, and the more likely it is that someone may be armed, the less likely a criminal is to attempt to victimize them. Overall the areas in the US with the highest gun control, do not have less gun related violence/crimes, and in some of those locations, they actually have higher rates. In my experience most of the people I know who are for stricter gun control know little about firearms, these are the same people who think and AR-15 is more lethal than any other semi-automatic rifle. Thankfully so far most of what I've see on here from the "anti-gun" advocates denotes a better understanding of fire-arms than the previously mentioned people.
