![]() I think I'm actually going to withdraw my application because, the more I think about my character concept, the less I feel like he's suited for the tone/theme of this campaign. I could try to come up with something else, I suppose, but I'm not really hit by any inspiration and there are so many applicants already! ![]()
![]() Hmm. Natural Explorer-
Primeval Awareness- I like this! Being able to communicate with animals is fun, and the sensing ability is actually useful now. Hide in Plain Sight- The ranger is now a ninja. Well, it's a lot better than the old Hide in Plain Sight. I like that the archetypes are called "Conclaves" now. The beastmaster changes all seem pretty solid, although it's a bit of a bummer to have the animal companion choices reduced. What happened to the snakes and giant crabs? :) I just started playing a level 15 hunter ranger in an ongoing campaign (I was recruited to replace one of my roommates, who can't commit to the group anymore, and take over her character). I might ask the DM if I can try playing him with these revised rules, test out how it goes. ![]()
![]() I'm still working on my spiritualist and his phantom. I have a pretty good idea of his backstory and personality, but I still need to fill out the GM's questionnaire and finish up the mechanical aspects of the character. Also he needs a last name, I just can't come up with one that I like :) ![]()
![]() GM, I have a question. I started off thinking about something else and got really struck with the idea of making a Spiritualist. The only issue is that I was hoping to use the Spheres of Power magic system, because I like it a lot, but the occult classes haven't been officially converted to Spheres of Power yet. It seems like it'd be fairly straightforward to convert, because the Spiritualist just gets partial casting and very few other abilities related to magic. Would it be acceptable to swap out the Spiritualist's regular magic for being a Spheres of Power mid-caster and otherwise keep the class the same? Subject to any approval or tinkering from you, of course. ![]()
![]() Okay, thanks everyone! I will be dishing out some Hell-approved healing to my party once I level up. I do have to say though:
Drahliana Moonrunner wrote: Cure (or inflict) wound spells do not "channel energy". Channeling energy refers to a mechanic which has nothing to do with spellcasting. This is not what I'm seeing in the spell description. Cure Wounds wrote: When laying your hand upon a living creature, you channel positive energy that cures 1d8 points of damage + 1 point per caster level (maximum +5). Since undead are powered by negative energy, this spell deals damage to them instead of curing their wounds. An undead creature can apply spell resistance, and can attempt a Will save to take half damage. So, I presume it would be more accurate to say that a cleric of any alignment can channel positive energy through casting a spell which does that, but only a good-aligned cleric can channel positive energy spontaneously as part of their capital-C-E Channel Energy class feature? ![]()
![]() I am playing an evil inquisitor of Asmodeus. No one else in the party really knows how to heal, so I was thinking of taking Cure light wounds as a spell next level. But I'm kind of confused about how positive energy works. Cure wounds spells channel positive energy. The cleric's class description says that good clerics channel positive energy, which heals, and evil clerics channel negative energy, which harms. Inquisitors don't have that "channel energy" class feature, but am I still barred from learning the spell, because I'm evil? ![]()
![]() This is what I've got as a mechanical build for a Thri-kreen custom race. It's my first time doing the race builder, so let me know if anything needs to be altered. Spoiler:
Type: humanoid (kreen) Size: medium Ability Score Modifiers: Kreen are speedy and tough, but their insectoid nature can make it difficult for them to connect with other races; +2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Cha (Specialized, 1 RP) Languages: Kreen (Xenophobic, 0 RP) Multi-Armed: Thri-kreen have 4 arms. Only one hand is treated as their primary hand. (8 RP) Desert Runner: Thri-kreen receive a +4 racial bonus on Constitution checks and Fortitude saves to avoid fatigue and exhaustion, as well as any other ill effects from running, forced marches, starvation, thirst, and hot or cold environments. (2 RP) Camouflage: Thri-kreen gain a +4 racial bonus on Stealth checks while within desert terrain. (1 RP) Jumper: Thri-kreen are always considered to have a running start when making Acrobatics checks to jump. (2 RP) Bite: Thri-kreen gain a natural bite attack, dealing 1d3 damage. The bite is a primary attack, or a secondary attack if the creature is wielding manufactured weapons. (1 RP) That comes out to an even 15 RP, as far as I can tell. As for my actual character, I've been thinking about doing some kind of cleric. Since just because Dark Sun thri-kreen don't have religion, as there's no access to divine magic on their planet, doesn't mean that thri-kreen from other worlds couldn't worship a deity. I'm thinking they would be spacefarers already and essentially missionaries trying to convert others to their religion, before the character ends up in this situation. ![]()
![]() In my opinion, they should look like the way they're presented in canon art (mostly in 4e art– 5e marketing sort of feels like they forgot that dragonborn exist, sometimes) but also THEY SHOULD HAVE TAILS. It annoys me that dragonborn don't have tails. Also, I know you probably meant "more or less like Madame Vastra" when you said "like the Silurians from Doctor Who," but as a fan of the classic series, now I just want to see dragonborn who look like this :o ![]()
![]() YoricksRequiem wrote: I definitely took some liberties, both mechanically and fluff-wise. It's also likely that I'm going with the worker style, rather than the four-armed incarnation, so I'm totally fine with changing the name of my race if yours is a more accurate portrayal. There's certainly enough room in the multiverse for multiple bugs. :) Oh, don't worry about "accuracy" on my account. There are lots of subspecies of mantis people with different appearances. The kreen do, canonically in D&D, inhabit multiple planets and have their own spacefaring nations, after all. (Not to mention the xixchil... hm... now there's an idea...) ![]()
![]() Oops, I forgot to do the IC sample part. Here is something in the format of an interaction between the two characters I'm most interested in. Spoiler: On a peripheral branch of the raven's Great Tree, one small raven peered out contentedly over the woods around her, noting the slight wind that shook the branches and the way the golden late-afternoon sun played across the leaves. Occasionally she trilled to herself. This was C'a'rrrar'kk, a particularly free-spirited bird who was a singer of the tree's legends. Suddenly her reverie was disturbed by a flapping of wings and an angry caw as another raven, a female with sleek-groomed feathers, alit on the branch next to her. "There you are! I have been looking for you for too long!" "What under the sun do you want, T'rrr'aaa'rrr'k?" the Singer demanded, hopping slightly away in her irritation. She had known the other female for some time and they had flown together often, but found T'rrr'aaa'rrr'k very overwhelming at times. "What have you been cawing about to my hatchlings?" was the prim response. "They come to me with their feathers raised about lurid tales of horrid fey creatures, wolves with no eyes that climb the trees to devour ravens, and all such nonsense." "I do not just caw about these things," C'a'rrrar'kk answered, with half-joking offense. "I sing their songs. And you should be careful about calling my tales absurd. There are more dangers out there--" she jerked her head to gesture to the forest beyond "--than what you've seen in your seasons, and I don't recommend you tempt them."

![]() I read the opening post. I thought "This sounds awesome." I briefly skimmed the rest of the thread while I started thinking about character ideas... I thought "I want to play a Thri-Kreen for this! I've always wanted to play one, and the race builder option plus the campaign premise means it'd actually be viable here!" Then I looked at the other posts again and realized that the second person who commented had the exact same idea, LOL. Great minds think alike? I think my preferred mechanical implementation of the race and also how I'd expand on their fluff would be different from how YoricksRequiem has done it upthread, but I will tinker with my concept a little. ![]()
![]() Cherry leans in towards the harried-looking girl-- what did she say her name was? Oh, yes... "Shiloh?" she asks in a slightly softer voice. "You say these Iomedeans have something against non-humans, well, there's plenty of people in here who have an obvious problem with that, myself included. But aren't you human yourself? You just sympathetic to us blood-tainted folk? Or have I mistaken your look?" Shiloh, I assume as a changeling you look human, yeah? -- if not, well, Cherry is not super smart and might have just missed any signs to the contrary ![]()
![]() I went ahead and started to set up an alias for this character, but I'll continue to post under my main account in this thread so as to make it easier if I have to change or delete the profile later. The beautiful drow's appearance intrigues Cherry. So that's a drow. I'd never seen one before... she sure has a way with words. Wonder if she has the steel to back it up. "Now, I don't see the problem with talking openly of putting down rebels," Cherry says. "Since no one's going into specifics about tactics, the only risk would be if someone here in this tavern is some kinda powerful rebel spy, here planning to take us all out... and I don't think anyone here's that foolish, eh?" With the last statement, she angles her body out away from the table and raises her voice slightly, looking around at the taverns' other patrons with a smirk and a challenging eye. A few people at the adjacent tables look a little bit intimidated. "Now, sister Rosa... that's a pretty speech you've given and it fills me with the sparks of vengeance, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Perhaps we take up this lovely lady's," she indicates Melisanya, "offer and talk more of strategies later." She turns to the newly arrived Aevelyn and gives a respectful dip of her head, leaning forward and gesturing in a way that looks like it'd be a curtsy if she was standing up (or wearing skirts). "Well, Milady Thassan, it's good to know they're dedicated. We wouldn't want to underestimate our opponents. But you say they're not just any rebels -- well, the arm of Cheliax and of Asmodeus is not just any law-keeping force. I'll match their so-called fanatics any day." edit: oops got beaten to it. I'll respond to Shiloh in another post in a moment ![]()
![]() All right then. After looking over all the characters as they were being sent in, there were just too many neat ideas. It was really hard to choose and I wish I had room for everyone. Here is who I ended up settling on: scranford as Lilly
I have connected a discussion thread where you can go and finish setting up aliases, character sheets, maybe talk about character relationships, et cetera. ![]()
![]() Never mind my previous question about occult classes (although someone else might be interested in the answer I suppose), I was flipping through information on the allowed races and stumbled on the Ifrit Immolator inquisitor archetype, which immediately gave me the idea for an Asmodeus-worshipping pyromaniac inquisitor. :D At one corner of the bar there sits a young woman with deep red skin, garbed in the black and red robes of an Asmodean. This is the ifrit known as Cherry. Her fingers tap nervously on the bar as she hears the discussion between the others. Rosa in particular catches her eye. For once I am not the one who stands out of this crowd the most, she thinks with amusement as she watches the imposing tiefling. As a fellow disciple of the Dark Prince, Cherry has heard about Rosa's infamous past. Best not bring it up directly with this one, but oh, those flames must have been a delight! "Well, I'd join my sword to yours," she adds to Rosa, sliding down towards where the other women are discussing the news. "And our Hellfire together would help burn out those rebels." The last is delivered with a grin, and a flick of her finger against the wooden bar that leaves the slightest scorch-mark. ![]()
![]() @Ultrageek - I am going to veto the Revenant subrace because I don't feel it's a good fit for this adventure. The "respawn if you die" and "everything is about completing one very specific goal" makes it a race that really only works for a very particular sort of campaign. Feel free to keep the flavor that your character came back from the dead, that is pretty neat, but I would rather he just be mechanically a normal race. @Jiggy - I just need the concepts for now. We will make full character sheets after I pick the players. ![]()
![]() @Loup Blanc: I rather like historical pantheons, actually, so a devotee of Thor is just fine. Thanks! @Kuroyama: Yeah, it's a really neat adventure from the end of the 2E era that I think is underappreciated. If you are interested, I don't mind helping out any new players, and I can say that 5e is much closer to 3.X than it is to 4e, and is also simpler; it wouldn't be too hard to learn :) @Maeltheron: Thanks for your submission. For the record I am not asking for a complete character sheet yet (it's not a problem that you did one, but just clarifying for anyone else). ![]()
![]() I'm going to say most likely yes (I've seen the class played before in my home game and never had any issue with it), but I'll have to take another look at the psionics system and see if it would require me to change any NPCs' abilities to function as psionics. Like, if your mystic is doing proper non-magical psychic disciplines then it wouldn't feel right having them fight a mind flayer straight out of the monster manual who has "psionic spellcasting" ;) ![]()
![]() Filios wrote: What ar we using for ability scores? 27 point buy? I assume Sword Coast Adv. Guide is ok? I was considering a bladesinger build for the Wizard. What is the setting...homebrew? Yes, 27 point buy and the SCAG is fine. Bladesinger wizard sounds good to me, I've been interested to see how they work in play. The setting is ... "more or less the Forgotten Realms" just because that's what I am personally most familiar with but the module is deliberately written to be for a generic D&D setting, so don't worry about it too much if you're not familiar with it, as there won't really be any FR-specific lore involved. Duncan Esteros wrote: This is Daniel Stewart and here is my submission for A Gathering Darkness. The character had earned a pair of Slippers of Climbing from a past adventure. I was wondering if it would be possible to gain a second item, such as Gloves of Thievery, or perhaps gauntlets of ogre power (as both are uncommon items). Feel free to swap out the Slippers of Climbing for a different item but you only get 1 overall. ![]()
![]() Ok, I think I had enough people express interest that I can say recruitment is happening for sure. I would like everyone to submit their character concepts by the end of the week (so that is Friday August 12). Then I can choose players and we can have next weekend to build character sheets before starting the game. ![]()
![]() Loup Blanc wrote: I'm definitely interested, I really like 5E and this sounds like an interesting chance to play at a slightly higher level. Not sure on what I'd do yet, maybe a battle cleric of some kind, as that seems neat. On that note, what setting is the game in--specifically, what gods? The setting of the adventure is "generic D&D fantasy," which in my brain usually defaults to "the Forgotten Realms," but if you have a particular god/pantheon in mind, I am not opposed to that. aptinuviel wrote:
I'm sure you would be fine! I am definitely open to new-to-5e players, considering this is a PF forum I was anticipating one or two people who aren't familiar with the system. ![]()
![]() I see. I can definitely work with that. I prefer to be map-free whenever I can and if a map is provided it would just be as an addendum to what's being described in the narration, for any player who would prefer a visual of what's going on or wants to be really precise about where they put their area-of-effect spells or something like that. So I think that would be fine. My main experience with play at this level has been in the Adventurer's League, and I think most people by mid tier 2 have a minor magic item. Uncommon magic items mostly do cool-but-not-amazing things like "you can breathe underwater" or "you summon a swarm of rats to aid you in battle." If any particular thing someone wants stands out as overpowered, I could reconsider. ![]()
![]() I plan to mostly do theater of the mind whenever possible, but may have a map if it's needed to clarify a more complicated encounter. What is it that makes it difficult for you to view maps? If it is something I can accommodate for by using a different method of displaying the map, I can work it out. 5e makes that difficult by not having any guidelines at all for wealth by level, but I would like to give something beyond the default starting packages since I know some people might want to buy mounts or better armor and so on. I am thinking everyone gets 800 GP to buy their equipment and can also choose one "uncommon" permanent magic item. That seems more or less in line with what characters would have amassed over five levels of play, IME. ![]()
![]() Hey, so I am looking to try PbP GMing for the first time. I have a reasonable amount of experience as a GM (in non-PbP) and have recently been participating in PbP here as a player and really enjoyed it. There's this adventure I've been tooling around with that I'm really excited about so I thought this would be a good way to give it a try! I am pretty new to Pathfinder but have a very thorough knowledge of 5th edition, so that is the system I want to use for this. This particular adventure would be my own conversion of an AD&D 2e module "A Darkness Gathering." It is the first in a trilogy of modules (the Monstrous Arcana: Illithid Trilogy) but can be played by itself. So my hope is to go through this first adventure and then, depending on if it's successful and player interest, move to the rest. Obviously as you can guess from it being called the Illithid trilogy, there is a focus on mind flayers as the enemies. I don't know how many people here would be interested in this so this is an interest check / possible recruitment!
character creation:
You are a group of fairly experienced adventurers who live in the bustling mid-sized city of Stormport. You all know each other at least somewhat; you might be long-time friends or have just recently met, it is up to the players to decide. One thing you have in common is a connection to a particular individual, the elven ranger Aleanor Pathsteader. She is a stalwart defender of the innocent and a trusted ally for all of you: perhaps she saved your life, or fought beside you in the past, or taught you something about adventuring. One morning at the tail end of an unseasonably bitter winter, you received a strange letter from her inviting you to meet her at a particular tavern in the city upon the next new moon. When you pursue this you will become involved in unraveling a tangled plot that goes far beyond just the city of Stormport...
Starting Level: 6. For those who have not had the chance to do much beyond low-level play this should be a fun opportunity to make a more powerful character. Stats would be point buy. Allowed Races/Classes/Etc: Anything officially published is perfectly fine. Anything 3rd party or Unearthed Arcana would have to be looked at and approved by me on a case-by-case basis (I am quite permissive though and can work with you if you have a particular concept in mind). Alignment: This story is probably more suited to good-ish characters, but I am fine with any alignment as long as you are willing to a) work with the rest of the party b) stop a destructive illithid plot. If you are interested in applying please do not make a full character sheet, I wouldn't want anyone to spend the time it takes to stat out a level 6 character and then not be able to get involved! I would rather just have you tell me the basic name/race/class (e.g. "My idea is Bilbo Baggins, NG halfling rogue with the thief archetype") and then a short paragraph or two about the character's personality and any other details of your idea. Let me know if you'd be interested or if you have any other questions. ![]()
![]() Does "no evil races" include kobolds? I have been really wanting to play a kobold for some time because I just love the idea. If a kobold would not be permitted (which is what I assume... I just thought it can't hurt to check) I may try to come up with something else, I have a few other ideas. This module seems like a lot of fun. ![]()

Well if you knew it without looking it up or anything... then you just win my immediate appreciation for being a fan of my favorite book series ever :P I am such a big Lemony Snicket fan that I got the VFD tattoo on my ankle, haha. ![]()
![]() Feats are much less important to a character in 5e than they are in Pathfinder. They're technically considered an optional rule, and there are no feat trees or starting feats (unless you choose Variant Human for your race, in which case you get one feat at level 1). Off the top of my head the other major rules difference that someone coming from 5e to PF would want to keep in mind (for our purposes) is that spell preparation is a bit different. You have spell slots and you prepare a certain number of spells, but you're not putting spells "into" the slots at preparation time. So if you have 2 fifth-level spell slots and you prepare both Fireball and Animate Dead one day, you can cast Fireball twice and not cast Animate Dead, or vice versa, if you want to. You just choose which spell you want to use at the moment of casting. ![]()
