Hey, so I am looking to try PbP GMing for the first time. I have a reasonable amount of experience as a GM (in non-PbP) and have recently been participating in PbP here as a player and really enjoyed it. There's this adventure I've been tooling around with that I'm really excited about so I thought this would be a good way to give it a try! I am pretty new to Pathfinder but have a very thorough knowledge of 5th edition, so that is the system I want to use for this.
This particular adventure would be my own conversion of an AD&D 2e module "A Darkness Gathering." It is the first in a trilogy of modules (the Monstrous Arcana: Illithid Trilogy) but can be played by itself. So my hope is to go through this first adventure and then, depending on if it's successful and player interest, move to the rest. Obviously as you can guess from it being called the Illithid trilogy, there is a focus on mind flayers as the enemies.
I don't know how many people here would be interested in this so this is an interest check / possible recruitment!
I would be looking for probably 3-6 players and the module is fairly short; I don't know how to gauge how long it would take by forum but if played face-to-face I don't think it would take more than two sessions to get through, so that gives you some idea.
Starting Level: 6. For those who have not had the chance to do much beyond low-level play this should be a fun opportunity to make a more powerful character. Stats would be point buy.
Allowed Races/Classes/Etc: Anything officially published is perfectly fine. Anything 3rd party or Unearthed Arcana would have to be looked at and approved by me on a case-by-case basis (I am quite permissive though and can work with you if you have a particular concept in mind).
Alignment: This story is probably more suited to good-ish characters, but I am fine with any alignment as long as you are willing to a) work with the rest of the party b) stop a destructive illithid plot.
If you are interested in applying please do not make a full character sheet, I wouldn't want anyone to spend the time it takes to stat out a level 6 character and then not be able to get involved! I would rather just have you tell me the basic name/race/class (e.g. "My idea is Bilbo Baggins, NG halfling rogue with the thief archetype") and then a short paragraph or two about the character's personality and any other details of your idea.
Let me know if you'd be interested or if you have any other questions.

I plan to mostly do theater of the mind whenever possible, but may have a map if it's needed to clarify a more complicated encounter. What is it that makes it difficult for you to view maps? If it is something I can accommodate for by using a different method of displaying the map, I can work it out.
5e makes that difficult by not having any guidelines at all for wealth by level, but I would like to give something beyond the default starting packages since I know some people might want to buy mounts or better armor and so on. I am thinking everyone gets 800 GP to buy their equipment and can also choose one "uncommon" permanent magic item. That seems more or less in line with what characters would have amassed over five levels of play, IME.

I do most of my PbP-checking at work, where a lot of stuff gets filtered (including Google Docs and every other solution any of my past GMs have tried), which means if I need to see the map then I can't post until I happen to get the time at home, which is less consistent than I'd prefer. In some cases, GMs have been willing to let me describe a goal and then they handle updating the map themselves, but I'd understand if that's outside your comfort zone. (Personally, I decided to run my games 100% map-free, and it's worked out fine.)
So, do you think it would be an issue?

Wow, 800gp plus a magic item is pretty generous!

I see. I can definitely work with that. I prefer to be map-free whenever I can and if a map is provided it would just be as an addendum to what's being described in the narration, for any player who would prefer a visual of what's going on or wants to be really precise about where they put their area-of-effect spells or something like that. So I think that would be fine.
My main experience with play at this level has been in the Adventurer's League, and I think most people by mid tier 2 have a minor magic item. Uncommon magic items mostly do cool-but-not-amazing things like "you can breathe underwater" or "you summon a swarm of rats to aid you in battle." If any particular thing someone wants stands out as overpowered, I could reconsider.

Yokaiboy |

Ellyn Fields/The Devil of Masks , N Tiefling(pass as human) vigilante archetype
She apears to be a normal adventurer, but is an ex-assassin. lived most of her live with suppresed emotions -> has dificultys expressing her own(lacks connection between what she is feeling and the expressing), but good at pretending. Hobby: carving masks. Wears a mask in her vigilante identity. Was saved from the Assassin guild by an adventeruer(traveling bard type), is looking for him (hint: plothook!).

Nem |

I submit Nem, a Neutral human fighter (battle master)
The image of the violent deaths of her former friends haunts Nem to this day. As a result she is cold with people and slow to make new friends.
She face problem in the most direct problems, worrying little for long time plans or preparations.
Ideal
Ideals aren't worth the effort, they only lead young men to their dead.
Bonds
Nem will never leave behind somebody she had come to call a comrade.
Flaw
Regret. Nem feel guilty for the death in battle many of his friend.
Appearance
Nem have red hair with dark green eyes. She have an athletic build and with little curves and femininity. She always wear simple and rustic clothes, nothing that would hinder her in her work.
Her faces shows signs fatigue, as if she could not have good rest at night.
Background
The woman known as Nem was trained from childhood to serve in the militia to defend his hometown. She was not the best warrior, but not the worst either. She did well in small skirmishes, however, when the time came to prove herself in a big battle, Nem found herself terrified by the horrors of the carnage. She was not able to follow orders and could only cower in fear all night long.
The next morning all of her close friend were lying dead. All the ones that knew she acted cowardly also died and so nobody demanded a punishment for her, yet Nem was not able to forgive herself and soon she abandoned her hometown.
Since then, Nem have lived as a mercenary. Constantly chasing for combats to prove to herself something, though she have not figured out what exactly she is trying to prove

Here is an old profile, I've been eager to resurrect. I believe everything is here except for the animal companion (Hero Lab makes this easy). NOTE: Looks like the background (Folk Hero) is not printing. Also, I am thinking a bird of prey named Eyeball as a animal companion.
Also, just noticed that HL doesn't print the equipment, or special abilities on the BBC preview. I was going to print the pdf, and cut/paste here, but it seems that 5E on HL has some PDF publishing issues as well. Definitely not ready for prime time.

I haven't had any experience with 5e, but am very interested. As long as someone learning the ropes would be welcome, I'll keep an eye on recruitment and see if I can't come up with a concept that fits in and I'd be interested in. (Though I'm open to suggestions given I'll be new and don't know how things work out in the system.)
I've got plenty of experience in other systems (including all other DnD systems) so I expect it wouldn't take an exceptional amount of time to learn. I'd just have to pay particular attention to changes between the editions.

baticeer |

I'm definitely interested, I really like 5E and this sounds like an interesting chance to play at a slightly higher level. Not sure on what I'd do yet, maybe a battle cleric of some kind, as that seems neat. On that note, what setting is the game in--specifically, what gods?
The setting of the adventure is "generic D&D fantasy," which in my brain usually defaults to "the Forgotten Realms," but if you have a particular god/pantheon in mind, I am not opposed to that.

I'm sure you would be fine! I am definitely open to new-to-5e players, considering this is a PF forum I was anticipating one or two people who aren't familiar with the system.

Ok, I think I had enough people express interest that I can say recruitment is happening for sure. I would like everyone to submit their character concepts by the end of the week (so that is Friday August 12). Then I can choose players and we can have next weekend to build character sheets before starting the game.

Hello all regular 5e players. Another fun adventure for all of us. Thank you baticeer for offering up such a great gem of an adventure. While I have never played this one I had friends who had and they said it was a blast.
Was thinking of reserecting a monk character I played in another game. I will level him up as I wanted him to be a 4th level monk/2nd level thief. Will post asap.

This is Daniel Stewart and here is my submission for A Gathering Darkness. The character had earned a pair of Slippers of Climbing from a past adventure. I was wondering if it would be possible to gain a second item, such as Gloves of Thievery, or perhaps gauntlets of ogre power (as both are uncommon items). Thanks, and if you have any questions please PM me or ask here.

What ar we using for ability scores? 27 point buy? I assume Sword Coast Adv. Guide is ok? I was considering a bladesinger build for the Wizard. What is the setting...homebrew?
Yes, 27 point buy and the SCAG is fine. Bladesinger wizard sounds good to me, I've been interested to see how they work in play. The setting is ... "more or less the Forgotten Realms" just because that's what I am personally most familiar with but the module is deliberately written to be for a generic D&D setting, so don't worry about it too much if you're not familiar with it, as there won't really be any FR-specific lore involved.

Feel free to swap out the Slippers of Climbing for a different item but you only get 1 overall.

Couple ideas floating around, but quick question - what do you think of the UA mystic? Being the Illithid Trilogy, I wasn't sure if psionics would be a great fit or a bad one (or if the class is too beta). Since it only goes up to level 10, I might consider some multi classing anyway. It's just one of my ideas, but thought I would check and see. Thanks!

baticeer |

I'm going to say most likely yes (I've seen the class played before in my home game and never had any issue with it), but I'll have to take another look at the psionics system and see if it would require me to change any NPCs' abilities to function as psionics. Like, if your mystic is doing proper non-magical psychic disciplines then it wouldn't feel right having them fight a mind flayer straight out of the monster manual who has "psionic spellcasting" ;)

Loup Blanc |

Alright, my planned submission is Kjell Strongarm, a Chaotic Good human barbarian 1/paladin 5. He'll be a worshiper of Thor, unless you'd prefer not to have historical pantheons represented, in which case he'll worship Kord. Either way, as of right now I'm thinking he'll have the Far Traveler background, and be the archetypal wanderer from the icy northlands, come with his own gods and his own way of life. He was used to a different way of life and has had to adapt, but his heart is always in the right place and he's wandered as a heroic adventurer of the old tales, righting wrongs, slaying monsters, and doing his part to help people wherever he goes.
In terms of the Background Characteristics...
Why Are You Here?: Wanderer
Where Are You From?: The Frigid Northlands
Personality Trait: Kjell has a strong code of honor foreign to these lands and often misunderstood, and he expresses affection and contempt in ways that can be unfamiliar to others.
Ideal: Adventure! Kjell is far from home, and everything is strange and wonderful.
Bond: Kjell is constantly fascinated by the beauty and wonder of this new land, and he will fight to his last to defend it and its people.
Flaw: Kjell does have some weakness for the intoxicants and pleasures of this land, many of which were unheard of in his homeland.

Kuroyama |

I'm afraid D&D lost me after 4th Edition came around, or else I'd pounce on this. I love anything from the AD&D era (and Forgotten Realms as it was then, too)! Great to see an adaptation of a module from those times.
I would try, but I'd be coming in completely blind, which is something I doubt you want. Best of luck to you with it! :)

baticeer |

@Loup Blanc: I rather like historical pantheons, actually, so a devotee of Thor is just fine. Thanks!
@Kuroyama: Yeah, it's a really neat adventure from the end of the 2E era that I think is underappreciated. If you are interested, I don't mind helping out any new players, and I can say that 5e is much closer to 3.X than it is to 4e, and is also simpler; it wouldn't be too hard to learn :)
@Maeltheron: Thanks for your submission. For the record I am not asking for a complete character sheet yet (it's not a problem that you did one, but just clarifying for anyone else).

![]() |

Hi everyone! (Especially you. You know who you are. ;)
I'm going to respectfully disagree with Kuroyama as much as I possibly can. Playing D&D 3E and Pathfinder has started to feel like I'm playing Starcraft 2 in Korea. I thought I was good, but everyone just seems to playing a different game.
I like that 5E not only said 'no' to power creep, but has effectively reset everything to sub-AD&D levels. Suddenly getting a +1 bonus means something again! =D
Another thing that I like in 5E (although I freely admit that I'm on an island here) are that clerics are amazing!
Baticeer, it looks like you still just want character concepts, and I respect that. Hence, my character will be a solid human Cleric of War. Worshipper of Torm. There's gonna be a lot of BATTLE CRIES and FOR THE GLORY OF TORM! and FOR BLOOD AND GLORY! all for the SMITING OF EVIL! =)
He stood with Aleanor Pathsteader when she assisted the Order of the Golden Lions to hold the Temple of the Divine Sun when it was besieged by a warband of BloodHand orcs. Together they held the right flank for three days and three nights until the leader of the Golden Lions, Lord-Commander Martel, launched a daring raid against the orcs' rear and broke their lines, slaying their leader Borak the Despoiler.
(On a personal note I'm a recent but avid 5E fan, and I'm an energetic and creative poster whose posts are often favorited by others. )
Let me know if you need an alias and I'll have it up with all speed. =)
Never have wielded a magic item in 5E. I'll ponder upon it.

Well, I was thinking of doing a Land Druid Wood Elf former slave, or a Tempest Cleric as it's been a *long* time since I've played a Druid in any edition. But looking through the submissions I noticed a decided lack of social skills and my favorite class of all time is a Bard. So, I thought my first introduction into 5th edition may as well be my favorite!
I'll work out more of a personality and idea for the character tonight and post some more later on.

GM Niles |

Howdy, I think I'm interested in trying this out. I'm a veteran PBP GM/Player and a huge fan of 5E. I can vouch for a bunch of guys in this thread as they are either currently in games I'm GMing or playing in.
Atlas2112 is hilarious and very creative.
Filios is a thoughtful and consistent poster.
Daniel Stewart is a good guy (His character Duncan went through the 5E module Lost Mine of Phandelver I ran here on the boards, its where he got the slippers.)
Loup is a fellow Savage Worlds geek with me on the boards here.
I don't think I missed anyone, but if I did I apologize and will rectify asap.
My idea for a character is a Dwarven Fighter named Garnult Tarnhammer. I'll be back later to finish the submission.

![]() |

So, I'm thinking of a Human, College of Lore Bard, who grew up on the streets. He tries to pretend that he didn't but it should be clear to any observant person that he did. Though, of course, he doesn't like being reminded of it.
Though oddly, he's not actually interested in money or treasure so much as knowledge and fame. He knows he can survive without money. What he fears is being forgotten and dying as just another member of the masses.

![]() |

Wow, thread really took off since I last checked in.
Don't have a build quite yet, but I have an idea: I'm thinking an infernal pact warlock who (due to low WIS) thinks he's actually a cleric of goodness and light. Some archfiend lied to him about being a good god, he believed it, and surely it must be true because now he's got magic!
High CHA, low WIS. Haven't decided yet if I want to make a melee/range hybrid with Pact of the Blade or go more "pure caster".
