"Yakmen! Oh this is terrible to hear indeed. I have not encountered these creatures before. . . they are dangerous and wicked, then?" "Might my other companions approach?" Uthman motions to the others in the woods to come out, "What is to be done about these maurauders I wonder. . ."

Karrick Margandan was once an ordinary man, a common laborer living in Alkenstar, living an ordinary life. Offered a high-paying courier job for the Altkin guild -- a wealthy and influential family of gunsmiths -- Karrick was to deliver a parcel to a prominent member of the guild at a private workshop. However, Karrick was unaware that he was being swept up into the political web of intrigue that preceeded a schism within the Altkin guild. The package Karrick delivered was an alchemical explosive device used to assassinate a prominent member of the Altkin guild. Elements within the Altkin guild used their influence in the shield marshalls to plant evidence to frame Karrick that would have him quickly, and quietly, apprehended and sentenced for a crime he did not commit. For his crimes, Karrick was thrown into the subterranean mining prison Avernus. Located deep below the Mana Wastes, Avernus (named for the first layer of Hell itself) was a lightless hole where prisoners mined metal ore sent up to the refineries and foundries of Alkenstar. Located in an isolated valley in the wastes, this prison would be where Karrick was to disappear and die. However, those that threw Karrick away were not prepared for him to survive his ordeal. Avernus was a terrible place, a violent and vicious hole where brutality is law and only the strong survive. It was in this dark and hopeless place that Karrick found strength and determination he never knew he had. Avernus turned Karrick into a ruthless killer, forced to fight to defend himself and with no one but the darkness as his ally. It was the warping energy of the wastes itself that changes Karrick the most, mutating him and causing his eyes to take on a reflective sheen and slitted pupils like that of a cat. His features hardened, becoming subtly feral looking and predatory. Over the fifteen years of his imprisonment, Karrick never gave up the hope of freedom -- and more importantly, revenge. Learning the ways of the prison and developing an escape plan, Karrick one day managed to slip outof his cell by feigning restraint, murdered the guards he encountered along the way, and with stolen armor and weapons fought his way out of Avernus to the surface. By luck, blood, and rage Karrick took his first breath of free air under the ashen skies of the Mana Wastes. He would return to Alkenstar with the sole name he recalled that could lead him to the men responsible for his predicament. Discovering that the Altkin guild had divided into two new houses following his escape made Karrick's job harder, and all those he knew that were tied to the courier job he had taken had disappeared shortly following his imprisonment. Eventually, word of Karrick's escape and his special talents reached the ears of the Grand Duchess of Alkenstar, who was quietly recruiting adventurers to track down the identity of an assassin who murdered a Nidalese diplomat in Alkenstar. Hiring Karrick to track down an assassin was easy, offering him the names of those who were responsible for putting him in Avernus instead of the gold promised to others is all it took to get his attention. However, given the secretive nature of the assignment she was unable to keep the local authorities off of him, and if Karrick slipped up he would wind up facing the threat of Avernus again. Karrick's situation was anything but simple. The circumstances surrounding the Nidalese ambassador's assassination revolved around a power-play by the Nidal government and representatives seeking to put a puppet diplomat in the influential position of representative to Alkenstar while attempting to circumvent a mad Gebbite ritual to be held in the dead capitol of Mechitar. Ultimately, Karrick was betrayed by the Grand Duchess, when her plan to blame the hired mercenaries for the assassination backfired and her involvement with the assassination was uncovered. Marked for death and hunted across the Mana Wastes with the mercenaries he was working with, Karrick's sole comfort was that his path crossed with the men responsible for his imprisonment in Avernus. This culminated in a bloody spree of murderous revenge before he would part ways with his mercenary companions and strike out on his own once more, leaving them to solve the tangled political situation on their own. They knew at his heart that Karrick was a self-serving man, but while it seemed as though his decision to abandon them was purely out of self-interest, one mercenary Karrick had grown close to believed that the knife-wielding murderer had left them to draw the trail of the Shield Marshals off of their trail... ...Karrick wouldn't ever admit to doing something so selfless. |
