Here is the Occultist build that I was talking about.

Basically, an artillery turret that also happens to cover the skill deficiencies of the party (Diplomacy, Arcana, Planes, and Religion), as well as having a pouncing kitty-cat :-P

Honestly, if the GM would like this build so the skills are covered, I would be more than happy to run with it :-)

Years ago, I had been researching some obscure cults in the vicinity of Carrion Hill, when I fell into the middle of a plot to summon an entity from the darkness betwixt the stars. The conjuring, of course, went horribly wrong, as those involved were not skilled enough to have undertaken the necessary safeguards, and the creature went on a rampage. The Professor saved my life, and I subsequently stayed in sporadic contact with him over the years since, trading advice and stories about supernatural entities."

"Your time has not yet come."

I think you are (possibly) thinking of Deathwatch - Detect Undead specifically only detects undead auras, not anything else.

EDIT: That said, if you want to house-rule that Detect Undead picks up that there is something a little... off... (although clearly delineating that they are not undead) about Dhampir, that is fine :-)

The fact that he is clearly unaffected by sunlight should count for something...

There is a pounding on the front door of the lodge.

When the door is opened, it reveals a tall, thin man with a broad nose and high cheek-bones, suggesting Ulfen heritage at some point in his distant ancestry. He is dressed impeccably in a finely-tailored courtier's outfit, beneath which can be seen bulges suggestive of a chain shirt; at his waist is a weapon that looks something like an over-sized silver holy water sprinkler. More distracting, however, are his eyes, the irises of which glow faintly with an eerie blue light. He is otherwise quite pale, with almost chalk-white skin, and fine flaxen hair.

He pulls out a silver pocket watch, etched into the lid of which is an image of a skull-faced moon, and flips it open, gazing keenly at the clock face within for a few moments, before snapping the lid closed again, glancing back at the person who opened the door, and nodding dispassionately.

"It is not your time."

He then bows gravely, before introducing himself:

"My name is Tyrrol Radanavich. I was summoned upon the death of the Professor, but did not receive the missive until a short time ago, as I was traveling. Based on what I have seen around town, however, it would appear that something more unusual than a simple wake has been going on..."

The description also clearly states that they are living, not undead ;-)

True, they have an undead heritage, but also, technically, does a sorcerer or bloodrager with the Undead bloodline (albeit a weaker one). They are still living humanoids, not undead creatures, so Detect Undead should not work on them.

No, Detect Undead definitely doesn't work on Dhampir - they are living, breathing humanoids, after all.

A DC 10 Knowledge(local) check would tell you that he isn't human, but that he is humanoid, although not *what* he is specifically.

(In the same way that a DC 10 Knowledge(Planes) check would identify Ingrid as an outsider, but not what specifically she is.)

@Ingrid: That's fine - since Dhampir are humanoids, it's technically a DC 11 Knowledge(local) check to identify them, and I note our friendly paladin does not have that particular skill ;-)

On a slightly more serious note, whilst Tyrrol may be a bit apathetic at times, and interested in fate, blood-drinking is not really his thing, so he should be fine :-)

I will note that he will be essentially 'back-up' melee (1d6+1 is not particularly exciting for damage output) until we hit 3rd level, and he acquires dervish dance / his black blade.

How about this spin on the situation: Tyrrol encountered the Professor years ago, when he was investigating rumours of dark cults in Carrion Hill. He is running late, because he does not really keep his forwarding address updated, and so did not become aware of the Professor's death until well after the fact (in fact, not until he returned to his old lodgings in Leipstadt).

Tyrrol (N Dhampir Magus(Bladebound/Hexcrafter) 2) is a tortured soul, driven ever onward to further introversion by his obsession with the death of his mother, and the ultimate futility of existence. He seeks to gather together tools imbued with the power of the Lord of the End Times, even as his sanity fractures; whether the whispers he hears, offering advice, promises of salvation, and promises of damnation, are real or imagined is something known only to the Gods... He does not seek to end the world, however; he knows that for all things, there is a season for senescence, and seeks only to make sure that the proper path is taken.
