![]() I believe that today is my last day performing any sort of attorney work! I am so ready to continue the madness of this campaign! Just out of curiosity, does anyone with knowledge of the King in Yellow play ever wonder what happened to the royal family, or the vanished kingdom's inhabitants for that matter, after the land was subsumed by Carcosa? ;) Itches- Thanks for the well-wishings! The lawyer I managed to procure for him has a 98% walk rate for his clients, which is exceptional really. Rynjin- Don't feel bad about being paranoid. There's an old saying, 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me'. It's okay to be skeptical after being screwed over on a particular subject. I don't begrudge anyone for having doubts, particularly about the reality of these messageboards and what occurs on them. Praetorix- I'm glad to help you all get in touch with your inner madman! ![]()
![]() Hey guys! Sorry I haven't posted in a few days, I have been helping my buddy out with his defense that I mentioned. As of right now I have the power of attorney, at least until the actual attorney from Atlanta arrives and he can get better council. Still, my council FAR exceeds that of a public defender, as I've pointed out several things that the public defender he was going to get didn't even consider. Again, sorry for the posting issues! ![]()
![]() Posting will have to wait until sometime tomorrow. Something has come up that requires a bit of attention. I will explain a bit later, but don't have much time now. The gist of it is that a friend of mine needs my legal expertise (Studied law for a semester before I taught myself all the material that would be covered up until Masters level, due to me getting a rundown of each course by the graduates and pursuing my research independently, then got bored and switched my chosen field). Sorry to do this so early on and I hope this does not discourage anyone, as the wait is a few hours, not days or anything. Posting will resume tomorrow and will, hopefully, pick up to TWO posts per day, should there be sufficient posts to require it. I should also have maps, NPCs dossiers with pictures (Even of the lowly scrubs like William!), and similar things. I'm also considering making 'aged letters' with real life text and placing pictures online when letters are to be read, though I am unsure of how well that will work. To answer your question, Lily, all material from the Book of Vile Darkness, Exemplars of Evil, and the few PC-friendly Elder Evils material will be allowed. Some things will receive a power boost, of course. ![]()
![]() One of the orderlies makes his nightly rounds, stopping by Sarhashil's cell first. He opens a small flap in the door and slides a large, bloody steak in through the slot. The steak makes a wet slap as it hits the floor. The orderly speaks to the large reptilian man through the door, his voice dry and full of cruel humor, "Whoops, looks like I dropped that juicy steak on the ground, lizard! I'm sure it's still good though. I'm sure if you get hungry enough, you can eat it off the floor, right?". As his footsteps fade down the hallway, he can be heard muttering, "Damn scaly bastard. Why does Dr.Tiadora reward him with a steak? Where's our meal for watching these lunatics? Woman's about as batty as these freaks are..." After Odrick begins his next round of screaming, the orderly bangs his cell door with his club, "Hey, shut up you! Keep it up and I'll have you put in the sensory deprivation chamber! You can't even LOOK at the damn lightning then!" As the orderly seethes at Odrick's constant screaming, another comes down the hallway, wearing a white porcelain mask. He puts a hand on the man's shoulder, speaking in a serene, fatherly voice voice, "Calm yourself, William. These poor souls cannot help themselves. Mitra teaches us to heal the sick and mend the broken. How can they heal if you insist on treating them like that, my son?" William stutters a moment, "M-my apologies, Acolyte Levingrast! W-what are you doing here, sir?!" The masked man chuckles for a moment, "Please, William, just call me Ionacus. Dr.Tiadora wishes for you to take Odrick out for a short stroll on the ramparts. It'll do good to soothe his troubled mind. I trust this is not too much of a burden on you? It will certainly cut down on the noise that seems to bother you so." William nods, "No sir, no trouble at all!" "Good, Now, I have a few things to take care of. Run along now, would you?" William unlocks the door with his keyring, "Looks like it's your lucky night, Payne! Promise to keep quiet if we go outside for a bit?" Acolyte Levingrast opens Carcosa's door, "Having a pleasant evening, I trust? Dr. Tiadora wishes to see your latest work. You know the way to her office, my son." After finishing up his rounds with Carcosa, he goes to the door of Lily Vorkink and opens a grate on the door, "Lily? It's time for your treatment. Cold water therapy is on the menu tonight. Dr.Hanson will be presiding over your treatment. You know the routine, my child." He waves his hand in front of the grate, "Now, sleep.". Make a Will Save, DC20. If you fail, you are now asleep. This is considered the standard practice for inmates who are considered especially uncooperative. You are put to sleep, restrained, and then carted off to your treatment. As Itches paces his cell, he looks down on the floor and notices something that he was sure was not in the cell a few minutes before, a small manuscript bound in a yellow cover. The cover is blank but for the words 'Musings on the King' written in a spidery script. Itches Perception DC10:
A small piece of paper is shoved into the book like a crude bookmark. It has some writing on it, but you can't quite make it out. Perhaps closer inspection might help? Praetorix: You see the gleam of moonlight shining through the window, hitting the door. The light slowly turns unnatural, alternating between various indescribably hues that have no analogue. Do you turn around? I have something interesting planned either way! :) ![]()
![]() Or she could just place everything in spoiler with the DISTURBING CONTENT tag clearly on it. I'm fine either way. Try being a teenager GMing a campaign for other teenagers, in an evil campaign, WITH the Book of Vile Darkness content available for their use. I have had situations come up back in the day that were VERY uncomfortable! I, for one, will be using DISTURBING CONTENT warnings on some spoilers, particularly with a few of the Cult of the Yellow Sign 'ceremonies'. Anyone here read up on the Cult in Freeport? It was some pretty dark, unsettling stuff! ![]()
![]() Praetorix:
You hallucinate and fluffy cloud unicorns trailing rainbow light seem to rush in from the windowslits. The largest, most majestic unicorn goes to nuzzle up to you when, all of a sudden the rainbows fade into black ribbons of darkness. The unicorn eyes you knowingly then screams in pain as it become engulfed in roaring flames. It neighs and screams in a bloodcurdling fashion before turning into an ashen statue, which promptly falls and crumbles, spilling ashes into the air and leaving the smell of charred flesh in the room. You could almost feel the intense heat from the ashes as they settle down on your body. That was not serious at all! Just a little joke, since this is OOC. Well, a joke that turned pretty dark really quick! :) In all seriousness though, I believe that most of your hallucinations tend to take a dark, morbid edge like that one. Am I correct? Sarhashil- That is just 3 points shy of breaking the door down! WOW!!! :) ![]()
![]() Praetorix- Exactly! Since Carcosa's overlapped yours, my original version was to have them the same, with his having a little extra. My revised version, which required some searching for, made your delusions even worse than normal. It would be hilarious for a fighter to bullrush you, and, even though you get knocked back, you take no damage and are like 'Oh, what happened? I was standing RIGHT where you are! Madness, I tell you!'. :) ![]()
![]() Gameplay is up! Gave you an additional buff to that, Praetorix! I had to find my notes on alterations. The ability to ignore Mind-Affecting effects for 1d10 rounds AND, 1/day, have the effect apply to almost any detrimental condition, even DAMAGE, is pretty good! Praetorix- Do you want to go ahead and roll to see if you get a hint of what's happening tonight? If so, feel free to post in gameplay! Lily Vorkink- 1. The latter of the two. 2. It applies to ALL damage that you deal! Can we say nonlethal Acid Arrow? :) Sarhashil- Take away the Fatigue Immunity. That's a change that was in my physical revised copy of the Insanity Traits. It's too late to edit that post though. ![]()
![]() In the shining kingdom of Talingarde, the Church of Mitra is known as merciful to those that other societies shun. It is currently one of the few nations on Golarion that has anything even resembling a mental health system. Most of those dealing with mental illnesses are treated by the clergy and subsequently released. Some cases, however, require the patient to be locked away for their own good and the good of the kingdom as a whole. These patients are sent to Branderscar Sanitarium to live out their days in it's grey, stony halls. Once, Branderscar was a bastion of mercy, a place where the mad could go and live in relative peace, at least as much as their own inner demons allowed. In recent years, however, the asylum has changed. The staff have become progressively unfriendly, the place has not received much in the way of upkeep, and some patients whisper of darker things, such as patients disappearing into the depths, never to be seen again. Some say that nightmares now live in the asylum, while others say the doctors perform grotesque experiments upon patients who will not be missed. Given Branderscar's downward spiral, both could be true. You have been judged in the courts of Talingarde to be criminally insane. This sentence is only doled out to those deemed completely and irretrievably lost to madness. The ride to the asylum is the same for everyone: a rough one, a bumpy ride through a nearby marsh along a narrow road in the back of a locked iron carriage. The straightjacket does little to help the hours-long ride through the marsh and the air smells fetid and foul. When patients finally come before the asylum, a massive spired structure with small, slitted windows, they are taken across a drawbridge onto the island. The weather is dark and dreary around the asylum, with patients often facing drizzling rain that runs eerily down the worn angel statues found on the grounds, making them look as if they weep silent tears. After a walk through a pair of dark iron doors, patients are processed and branded with a magical symbol upon their left wrist, a Mitran symbol for healing and peace, then escorted to their cells. Condemned, you face at best a life of imprisonment where you will languish until the day that death releases you from your madness. At worst, you will disappear into the depths of the asylum, never to be seen or heard from again. You have lived in a bleak stone cell for some time now, the endless repetition of each day maddening. The only accommodations in your cell are a rather stiff bed, a latrine, a small slit that serves as a window, and the Mitran Bible. Your clothes are a uniform white straightjacket which is currently unbuckled. The door to your cell is wrought iron and is bolted shut from the outside. Two orderlies, dressed in white robes and armed with saps, patrol the hallway of your cellblock, ensuring that no patient can escape to trouble the world again. Escape seems hopeless. You have all been well searched and every attempt to conceal anything on your person has failed. And if you could somehow slip your bonds and fly out of this prison, where would you go? Who from your former life would want anything to do with a madman? Despised... pitied... alone and imprisoned... all that you can do now is wait for sickness, old age, or the asylum to claim you. For each of you, your old life is over. For each of you, hope is a fading memory. For each of you, life is nothing more than a ten-by-ten cell. And who can be blamed for wanting you locked away? Look at what your madness cost another before you were sent here. But recent weeks have been different. Dr.Tiadora, your block's resident psychiatrist, has been acting rather strange. The orderlies seem spooked by some unknown, unseen menace. And the asylum's longest-held patient has been ranting, telling everyone who will listen of a Yellow King that will come and free his children from this place of dark stone. Tonight is a dark and stormy night, rain pounding on the asylum's roof and lightning illuminating your cell through the window slits. The air seems thick with tension, as if all the madness in the asylum has raised up like a festering wound ready to rupture. Post your patient's current activities. ![]()
![]() Okay, I'm back! Lily Vorkink- You may substitute those out for spells of the same level with similar effects. Okay, so here are the Insanity Traits, redux! Delusions/Hallucinations (Praetorix)- You experience intense delusions and hallucinations. You are easily distracted by these things and suffer a -2 penalty to Perception checks and saves versus Illusions, while gaining a +4 bonus versus Gaze Attacks. In addition, your mind works in odd ways in times of great stress, occasionally warping your hallucinations to help you overcome that which frustrates you. At the GM's discretion, you may roll 1d100. Rolls of 1-50 result in you receiving a useless vision or even a deliberately misleading one, whereas rolls of 51-100 grant you a vision useful to your situation.
Primal Regression (Sarhashil)- Your mind has regressed to a more primal, feral nature. You are immune to the Fatigued condition and may enter into a Rage even when Exhausted. You gain 3 additional rounds of Rage and you may also burn with fury longer by stressing your body to the limits. In doing so, you take 2 points of damage per HD per additional round that you Rage, as your savage fury begins stressing your muscles and blood vessels to the point of tearing. Unfortunately, your primal nature also gets to you sometimes. If a foe damages you, you must make a Will Save of DC10+HD to resist dropping everything that you do in the following rounds until you successfully damage the foe once. Sadism (Lily Vorkink)- You have an insatiable appetite for other creature's pain. Whenever you deal damage to a creature, you gain a +1 Morale Bonus to damage. This bonus to damage stacks every round until the creature dies or you switch targets, to a maximum of double your level. You may also convert any lethal damage that you deal to Nonlethal Damage, as you know the ways which you can deal pain that are not fatal. Unfortunately, you are not very resilient to pain, receiving +1 additional point of Nonlethal Damage per die of damage dealt to you. Electromania (Odrick Payne)- You are obsessed with the electricity. Your obsession with it lends itself to you being able to utilize it much easier, dealing +1 damage per die of electricity damage. You also grow progressively more joyful the longer you harness your favorite element, gaining +1 to initiative every time you deal electricity damage. Unfortunately, your fascination with electricity overrides your sense of self-preservation, taking a -2 penalty to saves versus electricity effects, due to your fascination with them overriding your sense of self preservation and you take 1 additional point of damage per die of electricity damage, as you do not even bother resisting the effect and subconsciously move towards it. Erudite Obsession (Itches)- You are obsessed with knowledge. It doesn't matter how important or how trivial knowledge is, you crave it. You gain a +2 bonus to all Knowledge Skills which you have at least one rank in and gain the equivalent of the Bardic Knowledge ability. You can also prepare one more Spell or Formula per day of any level that you can cast. You obsession makes you seem alien and disinterested in normal societal functions, giving you a -2 penalty to Bluff, Diplomacy, Perform, and Sense Motive. You also, when confronted with an unread tome or scroll, must make a Will Save DC10+HD+INT or else do everything in your power to claim it. While you may exercise as much caution as the situation warrants, you MUST claim it as soon as possible or take a -2 penalty to AC and Saves for that day, as your mind obsesses over the piece of unknown lore and knowledge. Schizoaffective Disorder (Carcosa)- Your mind is a horrible tangle of schizophrenic thoughts and your mind bounces between alien moods rapidly. This mimics the benefit of Delusions/Hallucinations, but also has another effect. When you wake every day and every time that you are exposed to a stressful stimuli, such as combat, you may choose to have your emotions switch to Frenetic Madness or Icy Calm. If you choose Frenetic Madness, you gain a +2 bonus to Initiative and +2 to Caster Level, as your mind fuels your insanity into your actions, although you also take a -3 AC as you lose yourself in your tumultuous thoughts. If you choose Icy Calm, you gain +2 on all CHA checks (Including skill checks) and Will Saves (+4 versus Fear Effects), but always go last in combat and the use of skills and other noncombat actions take an additional round to perform, as you see no particular need to rush things. So, thoughts? They are not well balanced, but fit the characters quite well, I believe. ![]()
![]() Carcosa- Have you dotted gameplay yet? I want to make sure that you can see updates before gameplay officially begins. Rynjin- I will homerule that you can play it as you originally intended. I have the 3PP Warlock class and it can basically full attack Eldritch Blast and such. It's pretty beastly, but not overpowered. Certainly not more overpowered than the Slumber Witch, Limitless Body Bludgeon Throw Mythic Barbarian, Dwarven Goliath Druid Tank, or the other ridiculous builds that I have seen on these messageboards in the past. So, is that it as far as questions? Here are your Insanity Traits! Insanity Traits: [/url] ![]()
![]() I am rather pleased with this group! A fallen adventurer-turned herald of the King in Yellow... a sadistic sociopath whose only goal is to satiate her dark lusts for pain... a madman who shows his love for the people of Talingarde with currents of 10,000+ volts... a Ratman obsessed with knowing EVERYTHING... a Killer Croc-style man whose control is rapidly slipping to the feral beast inside of him... and a delusional Halfling prophet of the end times! What a crew! :) I will have your Insanity Traits posted soon, along with a primer on Talingarde. I'm going to bed before too much longer. Ready yourselves for madness! ![]()
![]() My apologies for the wait. I woke up around 5:00 P.M. and played Dying Light for several hours after eating some food. Here are my selections for the party's composition! 1. Carcosa, the Tattered Shepherd 2. Praetorix 3. Lily Vorkink 4. Odrick Payne 5. Sarhashil 6. Itches There were a lot of REALLY good applicants, something that I have come to expect here on Paizo from what I have gathered during my lurking period. It still didn't prepare me for the tough decisions of choosing between you all. I commend all of you for the amazing characters you put together and hope that we get to game sometime! Those who have been selected, report to gameplay and discussion! ![]()
![]() Gestalt is much more fun, because it opens up options for your character that would otherwise take level-dipping, and therefore forfeiture of capstone abilities, in order to partially actualize in-game. A perfect example is playing a Trickster-type (Capitalized because of the title given to Coyote!) character like Loki. We all know that sneak attack and illusion spells are what is necessary, but level-dipping, especially when one is a dedicated spellcaster, hurts immensely! ![]()
![]() Seth86- I believe that you have what you need. To give you a checklist, you do have a statblock, background, personality, appearance, and a mental illness, right? Veneficus Heketch- Am I reading a crazed version of Sir Alonne here? Just got through with that boss, hence why I thought of him when I read your write-up and weapon. If you don't know who that is, look up the fight with him on YouTube. He's basically a super samurai duelist in the Crown of the Old Iron King expansion for Dark Souls 2. Hardest boss in the game, in my opinion. Also, nice write-up with the diagnosis! As a professional in abnormal psychology, I can say that you made that look quite legit! CampinCarl9127- Background, appearance, and personality are all things that I would like to see on your character. I rather like his "The dragon made me do it!" mentality that I'm reading he has. Korak the Boisterous- I have no issues with you reflavoring any traits on the SRD. ![]()
![]() Ah okay, I understand the question better now! The first replaces your CHA modifier to begin with, which I don't really consider a bonus, just a substitution. The second ADDS the WIS modifier to the checks. Based on this, I conclude that the 'bonus' only comes from the second ability and, hence, they stack. Is Soren's CHA skills going to be through the roof? Yes, but considering that not all NPCs can be persuaded/dissuaded/manipulated by words alone, I think that is not TOO strong of a power, at least no more so than dumping several feats and traits into those types of bonuses. In the end, CHA skills only have situational use in life-or-death combat against true foes, unlike the plethora that it can apply to with low-tier scrubs, so it can just be a useful tool for skipping past unnecessary fights against weaklings that will only eat up posting time. My verdict: They stack! ![]()
![]() Korak the Boisterous- That one is fine, as is this one by the same publisher. ![]()
![]() Okay, once I select people for the campaign, I will give everyone a primer on Talingarde that will eventually be the product of several hours of compiling information, copy-pasting information on the major cities, and removing the few spoilers that are well-hidden in the text from said excerpts. Nathan Monson- Apophania (Umlaut symbol over the second a) is the word that you are looking for to describe your mental disorder. Apophenie is the human tendency to see connections in unrelated things, whereas Apophanie is the term coined by Klaus Conrad to describe when that tendency becomes a psychosis. Praetorix- The Prophet Story Feat is allowed, as are any other Story Feats that people may wish to take, assuming it fits the campaign. Lily Vorkink- I am homebrewing all of the Insanity Traits, so all that awesome is solely due to this guy right here! Korak the Boisterous- Of course you may submit, as you were one of the first people who posted. Seth86- It would be something to the effect of bonuses to Will Saves and CHA-based skills, but the complete and utter inability to have someone use Aid Another on you, as well as receiving one less point of healing per die. Does that adequately answer everything? ![]()
![]() Just out of curiosity, how would people like for me to create a Google Drive document that I can update with results of knowledge checks, NPC dossiers, artwork both from the books and from other sources that help make people who want visual satisfaction and a better idea of how things look? Rynjin- There will be a side thread for that sort of thing, should people be interested in it. If not, I will simply present a selection of options at appropriate times for PCs to vote on and then I will handle that part. For that matter, I will even allow the PCs to run characters for the MinionQuest side story, should they be interested in playing lackeys in the Cult of the Yellow Sign. Due to the obvious hint above, I DO have Way of the Wicked Book Seven, which mostly handles fun extras that can be included in the campaign. ![]()
![]() The Initiative boost would last until either combat ends or you get dropped. And the Initiative boosts WOULD move you up in the order of actions. So expect to start out at your Initiative and then, essentially, have the highest score in the group after a few blasts of electricity on your 'special friends' that are trying to lock you up or kill you. Anyone that has played WotW before will like the way I changed the 'companions' around! Grumblejack was especially fun to alter. :) ![]()
![]() And to give you an idea on what yours would be, Rynjin, Electromania would be something like +1 damage per die of electricity damage, +1 to initiative every time you deal electricity damage (Due to you growing progressively more elated at the prospect of spreading the joy!), but taking a -2 penalty to saves versus electricity effects, due to your fascination with them overriding your sense of self preservation and you take 1 additional point of damage per die of electricity damage, as you do not even bother resisting the effect and subconsciously move towards it. Sound cool? ![]()
![]() I know people are curious about the Insanity Traits, so here is a copy of message I sent a few minutes ago. "To give an example, those with Hallucinations gain -2 to Perception and saves against Illusions, but gain a +4 bonus to saves versus Gaze Attacks and also can roll a d% to determine if they actually have a useful hallucination that can help them on a part they are stuck on. To use another example, Lily's Sadism will give escalating bonuses to damage rolls and she can convert any lethal damage she deals to nonlethal, but she takes 1 point of nonlethal damage per die from attacks, due to sadists having a horrible pain threshold AND she must deal pain once per week or else suffer a penalty to Will saves and any checks requiring concentration equal to the number of days deprived after that period (Max -5), as her urges build up to the point where they are distracting. Get the idea on the insanity traits now?" ![]()
![]() Also, I have a question for you all. There has been a request for me to put the changes to the Way of the Wicked AP that I will be implementing in this campaign on the messageboards for others to utilize. Can I trust that everyone will refrain from viewing said thread, which would contain MASSIVE spoilers for potential player characters? I ask because I know that it would be quite a bit of 'click bait'. ![]()
![]() Praetorix- That's the point of this campaign, to allow people to play the utter psychopaths that they want to, with the reasonable limitation of not screwing over other party members and not derailing the campaign. And the Dark Souls series are REALLY good dark fantasy RPGs. They are sort of like hack'n'slash dungeon crawl-type games, but with a rich backdrop and the difficulty of old-school video games, with regular enemies that will gang up and murder your character, bosses that are punishingly difficult to most gamers who did not play older games, and you drop all of your souls, which count as EXP and currency combined, when you die (And, if you fail to retrieve it before you die again, you lose all those souls forever!). The first game has a Twilight of the Gods feel to it, whereas the second game is basically a journeying in a fallen kingdom where the curse of undeath began. I strongly encourage you to look up some videos on YouTube if you are a fan of dungeon crawly or RPG type games on the console or PC. Rynjin- Odrick CAN be from Ghastenhall! Do you have a player's guide or did you Google up information? And Bloodborne is beastly! Trust me, you will love the trick weapons. A word of advice, should you ever get the game: try to kill Eileen the Crow, a fellow hunter, when you first meet her and before you fight Father Gascoine. There's a glitch that removes her from the game, making you unable to do her optional quest to get her awesome Crow Armor and her Blades of Mercy, which are one of the best armor and weapons in the game. Do try to be at a decent level though, because she WILL murder you if you let her combo you when she splits the Blade of Mercy into two daggers. That game has a very strong Lovecraft vibe and has some rather dark moments and some moments that can induce a very strong 'squick' reaction in people who are not as jaded as gamers/horror movie fans. Darthrancor- I did indeed enjoy the read! She seems very Cult of the Yellow Sign material!
