No 1-18 on this character. Sylvia is a middle aged human woman with long dark hair and somewhat thick spectacles. A trio of spirits seems to float around her at all time, sometimes visible and sometimes not. She nervously adjusts her glasses as she introduces herself "Hi, fellow Pathfinders. I... I still can't believe I'm really a Field Agent. After helping defend our mortuary during that horrible attack on the Grand Lodge during the Siege of Gallowspire... They finally cleared me to go on missions. I've never been to Razmiran before" On the Boat sylvia studies from her well worn spellbook that emits an otherworldly chill while opened. She also spends some time reading over Fola Barun's letter a few times, trying to memorize all the details. Despite clearly having been at it awhile now she seems rather uncomfortable with this whole adventuring thing. Given her book, and frequent spirits flitting around her, necromancy is clearly her focus. My apologies for making assumptions, sometimes it's hard to balance pbp between pushing forward and checking on things, Follow the expert is vastly underused and I was excited to bring it up, would have had no objections if you had ruled it in another way. I spend a lot of time thinking about these sorts of things.
Thoughts with minor spoilers for later: I agree it's not entirely clear if we're in exploration or encounter mode here. Could be "direct social interaction usually take place in encounter mode." Or Exploration Mode: "negotiating with merchants" Running Modes of Play has useful bits which I think point to this being exploration but the later bit being an encounter. I had initially thought it was clearly Eexploration and the lack of immediate peril leans me that way but having read into more, I could easily see ruling either way. Seems like a recurring skill check to me, NPC wanted everybody to share, expert goes early and helps set up later PCs for success, just like the expert climber going first and then guiding their allies up. Social Encounters wrote: Most conversations play best as free-form roleplaying, with maybe one or two checks for social skills involved. Sometimes, though, a tense situation or crucial parlay requires a social encounter that uses initiative, much like a combat encounter. As with any other encounter, the stakes of a social encounter need to be high! A failed social encounter could mean a character is imprisoned or put to death, a major rival becomes a political powerhouse, or a key ally is disgraced and ostracized. Social Encounters wrote:
So talking with a single NPC with a couple checks to feels like it stays in exploration while a tense negotiation with structure and signification consequences feels like an encounter.
