As far as I can tell, varisians are the stereotypical gypsy. They are nomadic, scarves, colors, fortune tellers (harrow decks?), and have the same good and bad reputations in some cities. However, if I am explaining the various ethnicities, or cultures, and call varisians gypsies, some people get very, very upset. Gypsy is such a perfect word for varisian. Roma isn't. Roma doesn't make sense for Varisians, and to liken them is insulting to roma. Roma didn't travel because they were wanderers and worshipped a god of travel and stars and luck. They moved because they were persecuted. I get why calling a Roma a gypsy is wrong. I don't get why calling varisians gypsies is wrong. There is no politically correct word for them, and I think that calling varisians Roma is insulting to Roma. So, My question is: 1) Does Varisian = stereotypical gypsy?
http://paizo.com/events/v5748mkg0aeff I gave this up because when I put a "4" on it, I didn't put the fact that it was Swords and Wizardry (never played, but would be fun) and "Hard/Veteran" (qualify for Pathfinder) together. Couldn't trade it for any Pathfinder lottery items for that slot, nor do any of my local friends going have experience with 0e or swords and wizardry. While it would be fun, I don't think I'm qualified, and I will learn to take a little more time in rating lottery picks (a couple hours and making a spreadsheet is seemingly not enough) Therefore, it is on the market for the fastest person interested!
I overheard something recently in which players thought they could buy a boon (with PA) off a chronicle sheet that was crossed off because we did not fulfill the prerequisites in game. Feast of Sigils Spoiler:
The scenario was 4-10, Feast of Sigils, and we had some issues during the play of the scenario and no one got the boon of the profane sigil wafer. +2 profane bonus to any stat for a year is crazy awesome, and even my CG cleric of Cayden was willing to go to CN for it. I couldn't find anything in the Guide, nor in a general search of the forums regarding buying these type of boons. I do somewhat recall seeing a boon which specifically said could be bought with PA, but that was probably a one-time specific thing. As far as I can tell, this isn't legal, and the only way for us to get the boon now is to run the scenario, but even then it can't be put on the same character. Any thoughts?
The restaurant/room service prices are high. There is a QFC grocery store down the road a bit (just short of a mile one way). Take a left out the front door, then take a left at Hobby Lobby (which has a ton of model paints). Keep going until you get to Cleveland/Redmond intersection. The QFC (and Trader Joes) is at the far right corner. There is a game store with a huge selection of dice, Uncles's Games, I think. Go straight down the road out the front door, and take a right in the middle of the center. it's on the left after the smoothie place. Restaurants I saw were Indian, Thai, Mexican, Grill, Seafood. There is a Tully's coffee shop across the street - haven't checked it out, though. You can't get a roll-away bed with a double room (no space/fire hazard), but you can with a king size room. They look nice and don't cost extra. We asked for a fridge, and got a room with one at no extra cost. Don't know if it is too late for that for others. If you need supplies for costumes, there is a Ben Franklin craft store in the same strip mall as the QFC. There is a Zeek's Pizza that delivers - starts at $11.50 for a small cheese and goes up to $23 for a large special.
I'm in the 6-9 lvl game, but this question can apply to any of the divisions. Quote: Up to 20 Player Characters from 6th through 9th level will compete head to head using the performance combat rules from the Pathfinder Ultimate Combat book in combination with the new Jousting variation from The Very Last Book About Mounted Combat. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each division of this elimination tournament. Bring any PFS legal character to compete or use one of the pre-gen Cavaliers that will be available. Jousting is a spectator sport, so feel free to bring your own cheering section! Fame and glory await the winners, so be sure to secure your spot in the lists early! As I understand it, we can bring characters built using PFS rules. Why would anyone bring a level 6 instead of a level 9, since we are competing against each other? Is there any benefit to making a lower level character? I guess I don't get why there is a range, instead of a set level, since it seems everyone will make the strongest, highest level character they can.
I saw my schedule from the Lottory, having Kings of Absalom (Fri 1-6) and the Level 6-9 Jousting (Sat 1-6) Then I signed up for open slots, Blood on Devil's Platter (Fri 8-1), and Cyphermage PFS (Sat 8-1) Now my schedule is not showing the two events I originally had, only the two I signed up for afterwards. Help?!? [Edit - post clean-up]
Majuba says the same thing happened to him - he was signed up for a game with Pett, but then when he signed up for the open events, he lost the game with Pett. what happened?
I'm looking for a miniature - preferably metal - of a little girl. She's supposed to be about 5 years old, a bard, and uses a crossbow (only a 7 str, so she doesn't do melee much) - but I'd prefer to have a non-combatant miniature. I've seen a couple from Reaper, but Reaper just doesn't have anything that's standing out for me. A halfling mini would work, but she's got to not have boobs - pointy ears I can probably cut/file down. Any suggestions? An adult female of the 28mm scale would also work size-wise.
Here goes my votes for this round (alphabetically by first name): Adam Donald - Pyrebloom
Good luck, guys!
Hey, in Rise of the Runelords my GM handed out these awesome "Heroes" of Sandpoint Cards, and went up with every time we saved the town. I'm going to do something similar in my Carrion Crown game and thought I'd share what I've done. If anyone can make these better looking, that would be awesome - post them here! Cards to handout for Ravengro Trust - when the PCs reach a certain trust level, the GM asks for their current card and gives them a new one. They first get the disliked card sometime after the first encounter, whenever they realize, through roleplaying, that they are not liked in this town. Edited Version on Google Docs
Hey, I didn't see stats for Father Grimburrow, and I like to have my major NPCs statted up, so I came up with this. The Ravengro article doesn't specify his age, but because of his picture I made him venerable. He's not that great in battle, except for healing and against undead, but fighting isn't his role. What do ya'll think? I used heroic divine NPC stats - which is why his physical stats suck so much. Besides, the guy is 70 years old, of course he's not going to be very nimble. I'm giving him a cane to walk with. I rolled his maximum life span, and rolled high (70+2d20=99), which allows him to be in the campaign for as long as the PCs are. I added his trust and diplomacy DC to leave the Restlands to cast a spell. I gave him heroic NPC gear. I tried to make him very anti-undead, but still be regal and not be fully geared up like an adventurer, because he's just an old priest. He wears the mithral shirt because the world is dangerous and it's light enough to not be obvious under his vestments. Father Vauran Grimburrow

My GM is saying that when an animal companion is reincarnated, it is no longer an animal companion. He points to an article written by the 3.5 "The Sage:" Hmm...Found this on the wizards 3.5 archive: Bringing back the animal from the dead reestablishes the link between the two of you, and you need not locate or bind a new companion; however, the reincarnate spell is an exception. The spell brings back the animal as an independent being and the resulting creature is no longer an animal companion. We use Pathfinder, not 3.5, but since Pathfinder is derived from 3.5, it's not a bad source for clarification. I'm hoping these forums help to clarify it. It makes no sense to me for a Druid to have only the Reincarnate spell and not be able to use that on her companion. Since we are on the Plane of Fire, where there are no animals, this is vital for our campaign, as the animal companion in question was one of the big damage dealers in our party (lion).
I was looking for good props for Carrion Crown and saw "spirit boards" - or "planchettes" - also known as Ouiji boards. I found a beautiful one PERFECT for a Varisian, or any gypsy divining type. It's handmade and offered by this artist for a reasonable price (at least when I got mine) http://myworld.ebay.com/dominnica Just the board: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=310313608346 It's fairly small, so portable, but not too small that it can't be used in game. For players - This would be a great prop for the "Fortune Teller" feat in the Ustalav section of the Campaign Setting, and the Feats section of the Inner Sea World Guide. [Edit] This artist offers other designs as well, I just thought this was the most appropriate out of all the reasonably priced Ouiji boards out there.
I am planning to run this AP in a few months, after my current campaign winds up. A couple of the players are interested in using the Psionics Unleashed book. How would Psionics fit into Ustalav? I'm fairly certain the players want to be from Ustalav, not some far-off region of Xian Tia. Also, what would the power level be like if I include this book? Would they me more powerful than other PCs, or would they be disadvantaged for not having psionic-related gear that traditional classes would have. I haven't looked at the book yet, but I'm not particularly good at seeing what is over-powered. (in the current game I allowed the monk to take Belial's Bite (from Cheliax book - bleeding attacks) at a very low level - to my regret - at 10th level it's finally evening out, power-wise) Any advice, suggestions, or constructive comments are much appreciated.
PLEASE don't give us spoilers for campaigns without noting it. I don't want to know that mites will be attacking kobolds. I will be a player in a Kingmaker campaign coming up & I'm trying to stay away from spoilers, yet it is hard when unrelated blog posts gives them out without warning. On another topic, AWESOME harrower!! Can't wait to paint this
How would a slow spell work on a creature that already has the staggered condition? This creature is also immune to mind-affecting effects. A) Would the slow spell work at all because of the immunity? B) How would the slow spell affect this creature? This creature is always staggered by a special effect, not by spell or being at 0 HP.
My players LOVED this encounter that I put together and said it was very memorable. I LOVED running it. It allows player ingenuity. It also was a way for the players to pick up two fame points (I hadn't done two of the optional encounters in a previous module and this module.) So after the mayor's mansion gets destroyed, the city is supposed to be in a bit of chaos, at least near the newly ruined estate. I didn't convey this very well to my players, and noticed a few passages that I missed that mentioned chaos & looting. (see the 4th mod's bestiary for looting) So I came up with an idea to help convey that message. They had gone into the ruins for 2 days in a row, getting all the way to the succubus. The next day, as they were walking to the ruins, they began to smell something burning. Then they heard screaming. I had previously drawn a map of a busy city street, complete with various buildings and a asmodean water fountain. (I made that up to help with the encounter) I placed a bunch of mini d6s all over to represent the amount of people in the streets, and included several actual miniatures to represent people they may pay attention to, for reasons of being shady, or just interesting. As they approach the scene they see several things: * Two buildings partially on fire (only one-three squares each).
I added the possibility of several of the miniatures to be helpful characters. When the PC bard fascinated the crowd of people to get them to stop looting, panicking, and try to get them to leave (I allowed the mechanic of fascinate to allow the bard to get the crowd to leave the street), a woman on the opposite side of the street, who had been dancing for money with her brother, who had been singing, started to also fascinate the crowd. She had a lower DC, so didn't get as many people, but helped out a little. After some role-playing, she and her brother eventually became the bard's followers (Leadership feat). The Ukobachs animated the fire to create fire elementals, and used their fire jump ability to stay away from melee combat for a while. This made the combat much more fun by lasting a little longer than usual. Once I had them "disappear" - only to reappear when they set the smithy's building on fire, which was where they came out in. The players appreciated the creativity of that. The players had just gotten a hold of a wand of quench, and used it to good purpose. Unfortunately for them, the devils don't have the fire subtype. They also summoned a water elemental - which really helped a lot (douses as it touches fire, so can douse 40ft of fire in a double move). They also looked around for vessels that could hold the water from the fountain. I had a barrel of pickles be nearby. After tossing the pickles onto the fire, two PCs went to fill it up. The elemental and the quench wand worked first, but this was a fun way for fighter types to help. I gave one fame point for defeating the devils and putting out the fires, and one for saving the child. I used the rules from the Catastrophies article in the last module. It created "explosive fires," in the words of one of my players. The fires wouldn't grow for a round or two, then could grow in two or three squares in all directions! I didn't use the rules on collapsing buildings because the PCs took care of the fire before a couple minutes went by. I did use the smoke inhalation rules to have the child pass out after a couple rounds. This got the monk to jump up to the balcony's edge, and grab the kid before "slow falling" down the side of the building. After a successful heal check (low DC - arbitrary), she told the thankful parents how to care for her the next couple of days. (If they had wanted to heal her then, a lesser restoration would have done it) Oh - I made the areas with the most people partially difficult terrain (half speed, but five foot steps ok) - once the crowd cleared, it became regular terrain. I just thought I'd share this since it was so successful. If you use it, please tell me what you did differently, or what your players came up with!
I like the quality of Reaper minis and some other manufacturers, but I'm looking for an even bigger selection for halflings, gnomes, and children. Does anyone know where I can pick up some 15mm minis that are of nice enough quality for a PC? We have a few at home, but those are the really old kind, which would be fine, if they were still being sold. Thanks!
So, a module I'm running has "young shadow" and references pg 295 of the bestiary. The problem is, as far as I can tell, making a shadow young makes it more powerful in everything except its Str damage: Shadow to Young Shadow:
It isn't affected by -4 Str or -4 Con. Am I missing something? I noticed a shadow has 3d8+6 hitpoints. Do undead get their hitpoints from Charisma, and should I lower its Charisma since it doesn't have a Con score?
Note: please put stories under spoilers and note which module it is coming from. If you are a player, please don't read beyond what module you *know* you have finished. Something things my players have done in the first two moduels: Bastards of Erebus:
They attacked the temple in reverse order from the module. They went into the shack with the wolf skeletons first and went down into the tunnels. They were kicking Palaveen down, so I had him retreat to the room just past (reverse order) the newer crypt. One of the tieflings got upstairs, and when the party got up there, those tieflings were all gone. I had the "scions of westcrown" take them down and Larko chose native outsider as his favored enemy when they all leveled. now the reason I started this thread:
Sixfold Trials - the Knot: Curse: I was worried about the runecurse, but they "gave" it to Szamir! They won't find out what happens, though. Lake of Filth:
Diseases and Curses:
So I see potential in making this encounter much more memorable then a bunch of midlevel monks. Given that Eiseth is considered a being that can confer divine powers (PF Chronicles: Princes of Darkness), it would make sense to have a cleric of her, if only because its one of the only times it would make perfect sense. Also, testing out the new prestige class Diabolist, would be interesting. It could make sense in the way that they summon small fiends through lesser planar ally to give donations to Eiseth and the cause of Eriynes, in an effort to increase their standing and possibility of becoming Eriynes themselves. I'm thinking
she'd come with an imp as well, 'cause of the diabolist level. I'd lower the rest of the encounter to not overwhelm the players. Make the monks level 3 instead of 4 (no ki pool, so lower AC and no extra attack), dump the poison, and make the fire elemental medium instead of large. Because of the picture, I also want to change that MW light crossbow to MW shuriken, symbols of Asmodeus. Any comments or suggestions for a DM on her first campaign?
So, the Runecurse Sian plants for the PCs, it doesn't say what its CR is. I would normally consider this a trap, particularly since Sian didn't cast it. If the PCs go around the curse by removing it, shouldn't they get XP for it? "Story Award: If the PCs defeat Sian by turning the
This addresses defeating Sian and using the runecurse in an "ironic manner", but doesn't mention what they get for bypassing the curse. Do they get the XP of defeating Nyxervex if they just remove curse?
Ok, has anyone had to use Nyxervex, and if not, how did your players get past the Runecurse? Two of my players have infernal, but only one has linguistics and failed horribly on the check. He then placed the curse (after failing the save - 2 down) back in the bag and handed the bag to the halfling paladin, who made his save. I was looking at Nyxervex, a bone devil and figured my players wouldn't even stand a chance of *scratching* it. I'm thinking about switching the devil from a CR 9 Bone Devil to a CR 7 Salikotal Devil (in the bestiary of #26). It makes sense since Salikotals specialize in assassination and murder. Any input from GMs who have gone through this already?
The Howlers in the Asmodean Knot. Is their baying constant, and if not, what are the mechanics for them howling during combat? The only part of the stat block that mentions anything along this line is "Their constant howling." Howlers are not in the Bestiary, and their howling is completely different in the 3.5 Monster Manual. Since my players used countersong, this is important, for if it was constant, then 8 rounds of bardic music were used. Considering what's in store for them up ahead, they could use those 7 rounds of music if the howling is not constant. Thanks for the help!
One of my players has a character who took the trait with the borrowed wayfinder, from Ailyn, of course. He is planning on taking the Pathfinder Chronicler prestige class. I'm thinking the eventual arrangement will be that he submits his journal entrys of the adventures the group goes on. I like this arrangement because if, in the future, I really need to push the characters somewhere and they aren't taking the hook, I can have the Pathfinder Society request a certain item or whatever. What Lies in Dust has several advantages for players who are Pathfinders. I'm fairly new to DMing, are there any suggestions for how I can help this character become a Pathfinder?
A player of mine suggested I put this up for other DMs to benefit from. I made stat blocks, in a similar format to the iconics, for each NPC, including converting Janiven and Arael into this easy format. I have two versions, one for my players and one for me. What is in red currently is what they do not know about that NPC yet. They'll get to know if they use that NPC and fight with them. Ilara is actually Fiosa - I changed her name to fit into a character's (halfling slave) background. That character then saw fit to convert her to Erastil. He's a paladin of Erastil and they are sorta a couple, so it made sense. Other than that, I didn't change the nature of the characters overly from what is stated in their descriptions. Enjoy!
I have a theory. The AP is medium advancement. The creators took that into account, BUT because the Bestiary wasn't fleshed out yet they MAY have overlooked the lowering of all the creatures' CRs. I think the problem would be fixed if the DM increased the CR of all the monsters to 3.5 CRs. I have a problem with PC classes being 1/2 CR anyways. OR They could have just assumed the DM was going to go way out of his/her way to create a bunch of extra encounters. For example, encounters in #25:
my PCs went through the sewers (albeit I cut it a little short because they were getting bored and it was my first time DMing a large group), rescued Arael, fought two goblin rogues, and didn't level up to 2nd level until AFTER a fight with a 3rd level Barbarian Whitechin & his 1st level cleric cohort. It's my understanding that Pathfinder is calculating the CRs [for monsters w/o racial HD] by PC class level minus one or NPC class level minus two. Are you also having a problem with XP, how are you dealing with it, and what are your theories as to why this is going on?? |
