Outrider's Band (297 294 words)
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 7th
Slot ring; Price 6,300 gp; Weight -
Description
This finely-braided steel ring is flanked with opposing humanoid and equine figures, their limbs entangled in the strands. It grants a +2 competence bonus on Ride checks and a -4 competence penalty on Survival checks to follow the wearer's tracks.

Outriders often encounter circumstances where it is disadvantageous to have their mount accompany them, or, conversely, leave their mount behind. This ring allows a rider to merge with her appropriate-sized equine mount as a full-round action. The resulting ipotane form is a bipedal humanoid hybrid possessing the rider's physical and mental attributes and qualities with digitigrade legs, hooves, and minor equine features. The ipotane gains low-light vision, a +1 racial bonus to natural armor, a +4 racial bonus to Constitution (running and forced march) and Handle Animal (equines only) checks, and 1 temporary hit point for each hit die of the mount. She also gains speak with animals (equines only) at will. The mount's worn gear, not exceeding a light load, melds into the ipotane form. Separating is a full-round action, with the mount taking any hit point loss up to the amount it originally contributed, and the rider taking the balance of the loss and any persisting effects.

The ipotane treats her Constitution modifier as 2 lower when determining the effects of alcohol (GameMastery Guide, pg. 237). If merged with a non-combat trained equine, the hybrid receives a -2 morale penalty on Will saves against fear effects, which increases to -4 when facing dragons or...

This one treads into the makes adventuring easy territory for me as well as the monster in a can territory. It is a creative idea, but I was not a big fan of heroes turning into blended horses. I think your mythological inspiration is fine, jut might have been better suited to inspiring a new monster or templet for monsters then as a magic item.

Celerity Blade
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th
Slot none; Price 47,315 gp; Weight 2 lbs.
Description
Forged with an infusion of quicksilver and quickling blood, this +1 speed mithral longsword’s mirrorlike blade shimmers as droplets of mercurial liquid course from hilt to point. This weapon is nimble despite being a longsword, and functions as a light weapon. The crossguard depicts the visage of a quickling that changes expressions ranging from sneering at foes to smiling when blood is drawn.

The celerity blade harnesses the energy of the fey creature and grants the wielder a charge attack that does not need to move in a straight line. The wielder’s base land speed is doubled while charging, leaving streaks of silver trailing behind.

This blade’s swiftness grants the wielder the ability to hide its movement from view, and on the first round of initiative targets are considered flat-footed whether they have acted in the round or not.
Construction
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, cat’s grace, lighten object, haste; Cost 25,815 gp

I liked this one, particularly the treating of openness as flat footed even if they have acted in the first round. The charge is also cool, but I am not sure allowing it to change directions is a good idea. It should probably cost more too. Any way I voted for it several times.

Varisian Dancing Chain

Aura faint transmutation; CL 5th
Slot armor; Price 10,250 gp; Weight 25 lbs.

Description
This +1 chain shirt, expertly crafted for maximum mobility, is made up of thousands of delicate and decorative interlocking links. The armor has a maximum Dexterity bonus of +6, and no armor check penalty.

Most significantly, the wearer may, as an immediate action once per round, attempt to reverse an attack of opportunity made against the wearer. When an enemy attempts an attack of opportunity against the wearer, the wearer may choose to make a reflex save with a DC equal to the enemy's attack roll. If successful, the enemy's attack of opportunity misses, and the wearer may instead make an attack of opportunity against the enemy.

Construction
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, haste; Cost 5,250 gp

*This chain shirt is basically mithral.

*Its other ability will be highly challenging to use (in that often, a character's AC is enough higher than her Reflex save that it will be tough to beat an attack roll that hits with a Reflex save; I suppose it can work on a miss and grant the free AoO anyway).

*Not too interesting

I really liked this one and thought it was creative. This item got my vote many times despite thinking it might not work out with the mechanics. I thought the idea behind it and the theme were cool so with a little work I think this could be redesigned as a super cool item I would love to add as treasure to one of my RotRL games.

Mummer’s Slapstick

Aura faint illusion and enchantment; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 24,350 gp; Weight 3 lbs.

Description
This +1 club is spattered with brightly-colored paints and encrusted with gems made of paste. It was created by a fool who used it to thrash her foes in the fighting pits while keeping the audience in stitches.

Once per day, as a standard action, the wielder can brandish the club and make it appear to be something hilarious, such as a giant carrot, pink flamingo, or anything else imaginable. Any intelligent creature within 30 feet who witnesses this sight gag must make a Will save (DC 13) or burst into a fit of irrepressible laughter for 1 round. Laughing creatures can only take a move action but can defend themselves normally.

Each round after using this ability, the wielder can spend a standard action to attack a laughing creature. On a hit, as a free action, the wielder can make a Perform (comedy) check to extend the laughter of all creatures watching for another round. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target’s Hit Dice + the target’s Wisdom modifier. The DC increases by +5 with each additional check.

The creature hit stops laughing and must make a Fortitude save (DC 13) or become dazed for 1 round. A lump rises on the dazed creature’s head as illusory birds flutter around it.

Construction
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, daze monster, disguise self, hideous laughter, creator must have 5 ranks in Perform (comedy) skill; Cost 12,175 gp

So I liked that you took a risk with this one, but I think it didn't pay off with the voters. I didn't vote for it because it was just too cartoony. I like the idea of an item a jester could use to cause a laughing effect against opponents but this felt way to modern day clown and not fantasy court jester enough. If you had let go of the coyote/road runner descriptions and the mentioning of modern pink flamingos and focused on the effects that taunting and beguiling has on others this might have been a lot better.

Raven Leather

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th
Slot armor; Price 69,875 gp; Weight 20 lb.
Description
This +2 studded leather armor is made from oiled black leather and has been decorated with numerous feathers and beads of obsidian.

As a standard action the wearer can transform himself into a flock of ravens made out of shadows and spiraling feathers. This effect functions as gaseous form, except the wearer has a flying speed of 40 ft., fills a space of 10 ft. and every creature within this area is considered to have concealment. The wearer can stay in this shape for 10 minutes per day. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but it must be used in 1-minute increments.

Alternatively, the wearer can transform himself into a corporeal raven swarm. The wearer gains a +4 size bonus to Dexterity, a –2 penalty to Strength, fly 40 ft. (average), low-light vision, scent and the swarm traits. The wearer’s swarm attack deals 2d6 points of damage. Each round spent this way counts as 1 minute of the wearer’s normal time. If the wearer’s hit points drop below 0 while in the raven swarm shape, he immediately returns to his normal form, falls unconscious and is dying as normal. This is a polymorph effect.
Construction
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, beast shape II, gaseous form; Cost 35,025 gp

I liked this one a lot and I voted for it often. My only complaint is it seems more like a wondrous item....perhaps you took your cloak idea and changed to armor with the switch. It still works, but not as well as if it were a cloak. I wish it had something that helped be more defensive for the wearer.

Perpetual Vortex Staff

Aura moderate evocation and transmutation; CL 9th
Slot none; Price 35,000 gp; Weight 5 lbs.

Description

This matte black, metallic staff is composed of small, hexagonal discs that perpetually disconnect, revolving momentarily in an erratic orbit, and reattach in ever changing locations. Perpetually unraveling and reforming a few discs at a time, the staff remains in a state of chaotic equilibrium. The perpetual vortex staff allows the use of the following abilities:

Steps of faith (1 charge) Discs swarm underneath the wielder with each step, interlocking and creating a solid surface beneath her. This ability stays active for up to 3 rounds. While active, the discs support only the wielder wherever she moves, creating walkways or stairs to aid her passage.
Throw the first stone (2 charges) Release a deluge of discs, forming a heaping mound of loose rubble that buries a target within 30 feet. A buried target cannot cast spells with somatic components and must take a full round action to extricate themselves. A DC 20 escape artist check reduces this to a standard action. Once the target is free, the affected space(s) become difficult terrain.
Cleansing vortex (3 charges) Discs swirl in a violent torrent around the wielder, creating a maelstrom of spinning metal and debris. While this ability is active, ranged attacks that target the wielder take a -4 penalty to hit and all adjacent creatures take 3d6 bludgeoning damage per turn. The wielder may also attempt a free bull rush attempt as a swift action once per turn to push all adjacent creatures back 5 feet. Succeeding on this check by more than 10 also knocks the creature prone. This ability lasts for up to 3 rounds.

Construction

Requirements Craft Staff, force punch, shifting sand, stone shape; Cost 17,500 gp

I dont recall seeing this one and others have noted it might have been DQ'd. That said it feels more of a Wondrous Item to me than a staff, or perhaps it could have been done as a rod. I like the visual you have going on though...the constant sifting discs and then using the discs in the use of the different powers that was a cool visual that I liked.

Catapult Ring
Aura moderate evocation; CL 7th
Slot ring; Price 25,000 gp; Weight
Description
Curled into a tight band, this tiny copper spring stretches to fit the wearer's finger.

As a standard action, the wearer can touch a creature or unattended object on a solid surface and fling it in a direct line away from him. The target arcs 30 feet up and 60 feet away, taking damage from falling as normal. A willing target may be launched as long as it is adjacent to the wearer, while an unwilling target requires a melee touch attack. A willing target may make an Acrobatics check as if it were deliberately falling and can land on or grab hold of an elevated surface in its path. This movement does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

A target that hits an obstacle in its path takes 3d6 points of damage before falling to the ground in that square. The obstacle also takes damage, as if it were hit by a falling object. Any creature or object occupying the square in which the target lands takes damage as if hit by a falling object.

A catapult ring has six charges, which automatically renew each day. Launching a Medium or smaller target requires one charge; a Large or Huge target requires two charges; and a Gargantuan target requires three charges. The ring has no effect on Colossal targets.

Construction
Requirements Forge Ring, telekinetic charge; Cost 12,500 gp

This was easily my favorite ring and one of my favorite items s in the mix. I was surprised it didn't make the Top 32 so I suspect the judges saw something I didn't. I don't have any objective critique to give you and I don't want to speculate why the judges wouldn't have selected it. So I just say its a bummer you didn't advance and Good Job.

Think twice about creating a ring for the 2015 iteration. :p

If you thought twice and still went with it, chances are yours is one of the 39.

I think the real issue is don't try to shoehorn your wondrous item into a ring when they switch up the round 1 contest. The problem with many rings and rods in particular, and to a lesser extent some armors, is they were obviously converted wondrous items.

The secondary issue is that if the contest puts out a twist that throws you for a loop, try to run with it rather than convert an old idea that doesn't really fit (and save your awesome old idea for a situation where it can be better used, such as submitting it to Wayfinder).

While I absolutely think several items were Wondrous Items repurposed as other things, I also have to think that we have been Wondrous Item conditioned.

Meaning as designers trying to make super star quality its possible to venture to far into wondrous item territory because that is what we know.

OR, as voters to see the Wondrous Item the contestant could have made even if the designer was not converting an idea.

I think that is one of the things that makes this year so challenging, switching design modes and and still creating something that WOWS.

Let the item, weapon, armor, shield, staff, rod, or ring speak for itself. If you feel the need to tell the reader in the item description who uses its, who made it, who prizes it, how said people use it, or how other people might use it then your telling us we don't know how to incorporate the item into your game. We don't need to know because we are incorporating it into our game and we may use it that way, or in completely different ways. Histories and backstories just waste words that can be used to provide awesome description and create rules mojo. If those are tight and the Item has a fitting name we will "know" how to use it in the game.

The open call voting is coming, I for one am itching to start pressing those like buttons. When they announced the open call public voting the first time I was skeptical...but turns out I think it has become one of the best parts of the contest.

It takes time and dedication to sit through the voting grind, some will certainly make Champion Voter again...really...nothing else better to do? :) Whether you vote 5000 times or 500 times we need you to evaluate and pick for YOUR favorites. It takes time but it the end it is worth it.

We get to see lots and lots of entries, some great others not so much, but in the process we get to learn from all the things we see.

So VOTE EARLY and VOTE OFTEN or at least as soon as the booth opens and 60 seconds has passed.

This is true, but it needn't only have one. Let's examine this potential ki staff as a case study. A really elegant thing to do would be to head on over to the qinggong monk and choose ~2 spells that are qinggong spells, then add maybe 1-2 typical monk abilities and perhaps a ki ability unique to the staff. Then we add special text allowing a ki user who has any of the ki abilities listed in the staff to use the staff without UMD and to charge it 1/day for ki (keeping the limit of one character charging the staff per day and still allowing a spellcaster to use and charge the staff). This maintains the qualities of a staff without sacrificing on monk-ness (since we picked only qinggong spells).

Yes, this is cool.

What I fear we will see instead is a Ki staff designed to let characters who can wield staves get access to Ki powers, or a staff that lets a class with a Ki pool have access to spells typical only available to other classes using Ki as a way to have arcane or divine power.

Also if you do make it, try not to get bogged down on the feedback in your thread. Get to work on the next task right away. I did that the first year and my later entries suffered since I was too caught up on what people were commenting about my item that I lost valuable editing time.

Congrats on your item making the Top 100 List. I saw it many times while voting and I often voted it up against less interesting things, but it was not one of my favorites.

I am not a fan of items the essentially let you be a monster, or avoid encounters. I think that using this in most instances takes away from the spirit of the game and I wouldn't use it as a DM. However I think you executed it well and clear and with a few tweaks (different spells for creation) it make a good item for Players and DMs who would go for it.

What i loved about it was the last sentence, the bonus to Heal checks. I loved that you thought about a non combat way to use the cloak. If this had been the focus of the item I would have liked it a lot more. It says to me you have some creative ideas and I can't wait to see what you give us next year.

Thanks for sharing the item with us, Garrick. If you want to PM me the other Item you were considering I'd be glad to let you know what I think of it and how I might have voted if I saw it in this years mix.

The Gag Order is only in place during the open voting to prevent contestants from trying to influence our votes. You can't say anything about your entry if someone posts in your thread about your intentions you are not allowed to clarify. You are not allowed to suggest what you were aiming at, or to add extra material that might have made the entry clearer, but you didn't find a way to fit in the Word Count limit. You can't go into another contestants thread and point out or comment on perceived flaws or errors to give you a better chance. There will be enough people posting that any and all concerns will probably be addressed anyway...the judges will see to the most glaring ones.

Between the voting periods we want to get to know you. We know you want a chance to express your gratitude and to thank the voters for supporting you. We know you are dying to answer questions about the entry and there is time for that once the voting is done. Just remember to keep it professional and friendly and to wait until the appropriate time. If you win this you get to write professionally and part of that is being able to abide by Non-Disclosure Agreements. Use the voting period to practice that :) After that give us the press release and let us know how you are doing and what you are up to. (Except don't tell us what you are up to for the next round.)

It's been an eye opening experience, flattering and frustrating. I know we are all exceptionally busy people so it will mean a great deal to me if you guys could give me an honest critique of my item.

Crown of the Murder King

Congrats on your Item making it into the Top 100. This one quickly became a favorite of mine and I was hoping the judges would have picked if for the Top 32. It certainly has the WOW factor and is filled with mojo.

That said I think it might do just a bit to much. If I use this in my game I will probably drop the communication with animals and the retrieving shiny objects...they are nice for flavor but the last paragraph is where this item gets cool.

I might also tighten up the effects listed there, again it is a bit busy and has a Swiss Army Knife vibe going on even though it is all thematically linked. I probably would drop the fly ability since there are lots of other ways a character can get that and just focus on the murder of crows protecting and ravaging.

Nice Job and thanks for sharing it with us in the Critique thread ImmortalGlitch. I expect we will see you in the Top 32 soon.

Stone of Elemental Blood

Congrats on your Item making it into the Top 100. I only saw your Item a few times while voting, but I did vote for it each time. It was one of the few Items dealing with blood that I liked. It is a very creative way to gain a little extra umph from slaying creatures with a subtype.

I think mechanically it works and and l like that an Alchemist can get a little bit more out of it. The only thing I can suggest is I be clearer on how often it can be used. It says once a day, and it says It takes an hour per pint. Then below it says a gargantuan/colossal creature gives enough for a full days use. I think what you mean is it can be used once a day up to 24 hrs, but once you treated a certain amount of pints than it shuts off. So if I do 4 pints it works 4 hours and then I am done for the day, but if I have 24 pints it runs all day and night. If this were simplified I think this would be an awesome item.

Thanks for sharing it with us, mad_mac_hl, I hope to see you in the Top 32 next year.

Helm of Brass

Welcome to the contest, entering is the first hurdle and I am glad you did. I saw your item a few times while voting and I did vote for it once or twice over less creative items.

I think your opening description is right on, it made me want to know exactly what this helm did. However I was not a big fan of the first power. It is essentially 2 Spells in a Can, although it was cool looking. Also I was unclear by what you meant by using the flame as a thrown weapon reduces the duration...by how much? There is something cool going on here, but I think you need to find a way to let the spells inspire the fire effect but work differently then the spells.

I also was not a fan of the the second power creating a Plane of Fire. I like some of the effects it offers and perhaps they could be worked into the fire power of the helm in the first paragraph, but you want to be careful of keeping tight to the theme and not being a Swiss Army Knife of effects.

If you haven't found them yet on the boards go look for the SKR auto reject advice threads. Also Clark Peterson and Neil Spicer have some awesome posts about Wondrous Item design in the past years archives.

Thanks for sharing your Items with us Zachary, I hope this helps and I hope you continue to enter...I think you have the creative spark that will reveal a Superstar kind of Item.

The Frosting Sheath

Welcome to the contest, entering is the first hurdle. There were a lot of frost based items this year and this one fits the theme well. I like the description that you use. I saw it several times when voting and you even got my vote some of the time.

I think the first power is the cool power in this item. I like the idea of a cold snap reducing the movement of my foes. I am not a fan of the drawbacks to use an item, sometimes they fit the theme of an item...usually evil items...and I don't see the need to have on here. If you had stopped here I would have like this a whole lot more.

Adding the extra Icy Burst and Frost powers over did this item for me. I am not a fan of sheath's giving powers to the blades. Adding these to the item only makes it a Swiss Army Knife, but at least you kept that to the Frost theme so props for that. I get that it needed something more since the first power alone doesn't have the pizzaz a superstar item needs, but just applying weapon abilities didn't do it for me.

If you haven't gone back to the past years and checked out SKR's auto reject advice i recommend it. He gives some great tips on how to avoid making SAK's and the like.

Thanks for sharing your item with us Adam, I hope this helps you and I hope you will enter again next year because i like the mojo of your item.

Gloves of the Artful Gardener

Congrats on your Item making it into the Top 100. I saw it several times, and voted for it some of them. I thought it was very creative and a unique item but I think it needs an overhaul on the mechanics.

I like the DR to protect you from thorns, nettles, and such that can then apply to other piercing weapons like arrows and darts. I think that's a creative way to give a character a DR bonus.

I am not as fond of the permanently altering 20 cubic feet of vegetation and I think this is where the mechanics need some work. You say it can be used three times a day, but then mention charges are expended. This is different rules language and it confuses me. Can I recharge it and use it more times a day. Do the different effects require different use of charges? How does it charge up? I think you just mean to indicate that if the attempt to alter magical effects fails it still counts as one of the uses, but its unclear. Also how much time does it take to alter a 20 cubic feet of vegetation? Does a simple change take the same amount of time as a complex one? These are things I think you need to clarify to really make this Item solid. I do like that you considered and addressed how this item would work against magical effects.

I think this item does to much, and I like the idea of the third power better than the second. I think it would be cool to have the wearer of the gloves able to sculpt a sudden ally out of the surrounding vegetation. Again the mechanics are not clear here. I may be missing it but I searched Paizo's PRD site and couldn't find a living topiary. As a DM I am unsure what the base stats are for a living topiary to add a template to.

I hope this helps because I think it has a great concept. Thanks for sharing it with us gbonehead.

I don't think posting these here is a good idea, unless the original authors want to ask for feed back in the other thread it has been community etiquette to not comment on or share other people items without them soliciting it.

Hello all,

This was my first year entering the contest. I would appreciate any feedback you might have on my item. Thanks!

Dead Jester's Cap

Welcome to the Contest. I saw your item a few times in the voting and I did vote for it some of those times. The reason: I thought it was creative with a good name. I liked the concept of the jester cap giving powers over the undead.

The reason I didn't vote for it more often is I don't see a lot of use for it in the game. As a DM I don't see a villain with a cap telling jokes to the undead as something that inspires the need for adventures to come and stop them. I also couldn't think of a reason my PC would want to find this in a treasure horde and use it.

I like that you took a chance with this and think you have the begging of something cool. If I had seen this before the contest I think I would have suggested trying to focus on the creepy and less on the charismatic.

I hope you keep submitting Items because I think you might surprise us next year. Thanks for sharing your Item with us DiamondDustDealer.

GOOGLE everything....I once found out the cool name of an item was also the name of a Space Ship in a popular sic-fi series that I don't follow. However, I bet many others do, and that would have evoked the wrong image for the item.

There were a lot of "keep me alive after I die" items this year and except for this one I didn't vote for them. This one I felt had the right idea and I loved it the first time I read it and voted for it every time i saw it. Congrats on making it to the top 32 and Good Luck.
