I was the swashbuckler on the grassy knoll......

Playing the swashbuckler was a great deal of fun. Full of flavor, skills that seemed to fit the character concept well, and usefulness in combat.

I rolled well, and with a rapier and gaining improved critical, it allowed me to do some nice damage. My initiative was the highest in the group due to keeping at least 1 panache point, which allowed me to get into combat quickly.

Derring-do was fun to use and gave the confidence to try and move through an enemies square to set up a nice flank. Ended up not needing it as I rolled high enough anyway but it is a great way to get to try something risky once in a while.

Due to the newness of the class I forgot to try and intimidate any enemy I struck, but I'm sure it would have been useful if it stuck.

I was able to regain 3 panache points, 2 from crits and 1 from killing blow. This helped as I only had 2 to start with.

Can the signature deed feat be used with the swashbuckler deeds? If so, would most people take the feat 2x to get dex bonus number of parry and reposte opportunities every round all day long?

If possible, I'd really consider it and almost always keep 1 panache around considering the other abilities that run off of having at least 1 point in reserve.

Fair point. In which case, I don't see why the Swashbuckler should be limited to Piercing weapons.

Perhaps "any Light or One-handed Piercing or Slashing weapon."

Alas, that probably won't happen. :P

I'm still a firm believer that the class shouldn't be forced into a Dex build if the players don't want to.

Should a sorcerer or wizard not be forced into a charisma or intelligence build? I think the forced dex isn't so horrible considering the overall theme of the class. a fighter is forced into STR to be optimal (I think?) This is that agile fighting class, so it doesn't really seem out of place IMHO.

I do like the idea of "Any light or one handed piercing or slashing weapon" thus allowing more freedom to make a more diverse swashbuckling population.

I cant wait to make a dwarf swashbuckler that uses pick, hammer, or axe along with unexpected displays of agility and wit to make all the dwarf maidens swoon as he flaunts his skill across the battle field.

1) I agree that the Swashbuckler should be able to use a Buckler along with other class abilities (I don't even have a problem with TWF).

2) I don't think that you should be forced into a Weapon Finesse situation. Drop Swashbuckler Finesse at 2nd and just give them a bonus feat at 1st. Perhaps from a short list like this: Combat Expertise, Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus.

3) I dislike the "Light or one-handed piercing weapon" restrictions for a class based on using swords. I can use a light spear or a pick and still be fine, even though it completely goes against the spirit of the class, but I can't use a cutlass?

My suggestion is to re-work it along the following lines: "Any light or one-handed sword-like weapon". Perhaps include, "from the Heavy or Light Blades Weapon Groups" (with book and page numbers from the CRB and UE).

Currently, you can have a Swashbuckler with a trident, but not a longsword.

Just my 2cp worth.

Many games don't have firearms, so it is best left as an archetype. I've seen and read of swashbucklers that did not use guns at all.

Free weapon finesse is not game breaking as a level 1 dip because you can already do it! Take 1 level of fighter, free weapon finesse with full BAB progression and fort bonus.

I think the issue is, that right now the Swashbuckler can't be a pirate, without a) being a rapier pirate or b), dumping a lot of feats and reskinning a scimitar into a cutlass or sabre.

Because all pirates must use rapier, scimitar, or cutlass? That's a false assumption, and people will enjoy the previously mentioned dwarf pick wielding swashbuckler or other very creative ways to play the class. Not saying the list shouldn't be changed or expanded but to automatically discount anything other than the most optimal option is not how any role playing game should be built and judged. Open your mind and create something new and memorable.

edit: The weapon choice does not make someone a pirate. Any class and race can be a pirate as shown in skulls and shackles. Pirate is a way of life/attitude/career. I already have a player creating a swashbuckler pirate for skulls and shackles, guess i'll have to tell him he can't anymore according to your logic.....

Just wanted to say thanks for some actual playtest feedback.

Pin down is U.C. which I cant use.

Combat reflexes plus enlarge person spell + stand still is my best bet for combat.

As far as saves go, I don't want to have to count on the bard singing all the time and then use up his spells. Saving Finale can help my reflex just as well as will. Plus if I'm not the only one that fails, he may not use it on me.

the question is - is it better to have a +2 to all my saves or a +4 to wisdom and a reroll.

yes, knowing create pit is barely used is meta-gaming. Character knowledge would tell him that all the casters he's faced make him do will or fort saves so far. So if I ignore all meta-gaming, then I would never worry about reflex saves. We have a rogue or bard to spring traps.

Building a character generally uses some meta-gaming aspects, intentional or not.

create pit -almost never going to happen in a paizo AP. not a spell im going to worry about. and my ref save is not half bad.

Steel Soul - My will sucks, it will take iron will and improved just to get them equal. But it is a great feat to boost all my saves if I have room later on. I think a reroll on will is worth more than + t all my saves.

Stand Still - I like it, full attack goodness, needs combat reflexes. Gonna have to map out my feats again and see how many floating spots I have. its either 3 or 4.

I looked at steel soul. My issue is, fort is great being a dwarf fighter with decent con. Being a 2wf my dex is good, so reflex isn't bad. I have decent HP so failing reflex doesn't suck as bad. Its the save or suck will saves that are a problem. I'd rather get iron will then improved before I took steel soul. Maybe after those 2, I seem to continue to fail saves.

lol,i need more like improved iron will, even a +2 only gets me to a 5 will save. its the reroll that I need. Our bard uses saving finale to give me rerolls if he's singing, so iron will can help me make those. I get the feeling i'll need iron will and improved, will probably take those. Also thinking combat reflexes if the casters get enlarge person. Still have to work that out with them.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Also, would stand still be useful to keep enemies from getting away?

I am stuck on what feat to take.
5th level dwarf fighter, 2 weapon warrior archtype. This is for a Paizo AP, Ultimate combat is off limits as is 3rd party material. other members are cleric, sorcerer, bard, paladin, and sometimes a rogue.

So far I have:
weapon focus & weapon spec Dwarven Waraxe
Power Attack
Double Slice
2 weapon fighting.

My plan is to eventually duel wield Dwarven Waraxes. Right now I have a dwarven Waraxe and a hand axe.

Future feats are improved and greater 2wf, 2 weapon rend, greater weapon focus, greater weapon spec, furious focus, Improved critical, critical focus, staggering critical.

Should I take furious focus or critical focus now?

Combat reflexes?

What about toughness?

Iron will and improved iron will?

Is disruptive and spellbreaker worth it?

Step up feat chain?

Spell breaker feta chain?

4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 3) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 4) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 4) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 6) = 18 16

well rounded to be sure, with a flaw thrown in. could be a 5 after racial modifier.

I feel the need to disagree a bit.

Xanesha was refreshingly difficult without an easy way for my relatively new players to just get away if things got tough. Malfeshenkor was stuck in his room, they figured that out real quick.

Becasue of a party death due to the bells, they retreated and rested up. when they came back, they were able to make it to her pretty much at full. she had the whole group down excep the ranger. She was flying about casting scorching ray and the ranger was full attack with rapid shot and gravity bow. It came down to the ranger finishing her off before she got down to the hit points that her entry states she would flee at.

My new payers LOVED that battle and still talk about it. they admitted that if it was a TPK, they would have been a tad pissed but them the chance for vengeance would have been awesome. The one experienced(ish) payer said it was his favorite fight, evenm though he spent most of the time bleeding out.

Greatt tactics or a perfectly built group will take her down without as much drama, but for an average group its a refreshing fight that lets players experience the all too often forgot about posibility of death, maybe permanent depending on if they can get a PC raised.

Now, is she very tough, hell yes, overpowered even. But once in a great while facing soemthing overpowered is great, as long as the DM can help the next group that comes in by maybe having her not have the mask on this time (maybe that was the last charge?) better tactics, support from NPC's and the like.

SOon i will be playing this as a PC and my DWARF Fighter is going to charge up them damned stairs, probably get hit by a bell, and if he survives, look to get stoned by Xanesha. It will be a glorious death or a great victory. His vengeance seeking brothers and maybe a sister are ready to seek revenge against xanesha and her allies!

largely interested,

Nomadic Halfling Sorcerer type who ended up "heroing it up" and never left. He just ended up having too much fun, enjoys the city, can't wait to see what next advenutre he'll get to tag along on!

You bring up an interesting point. For this AP, i fidn their campaign traits to be subpar comapred to other APs. I thinkt hats why we are seeing so many, Chance Savior.

I could see Kelgar and Kayela getting along fine, lol.

It's always a lot of fun role-playing an Orc with a Dwarf in the same party, and I think that Zar'tan and Barruk would also have an interesting relationship due to their opposing up-bringing's as well as sharing an appreciation of body and mind, yet having two different approaches to it. Should be an interesting group, who ever ends up playing. Good luck to everyone! *smiles*

Good point, Zar'tan and Barruk do have a good amoutn in common, especially considering their upbringing. Being native to Ustalav, I'll have to consider Zar'tan's feelings towards orcs. Hmm......i'll have to poder that.

Good luck to you as well, and everyone else. Some very interesting characters so far. I love reading submissions and wondering how my characters would react to other peoples characters. Kelgar's interactions with Barruk would be some fun to role play. Also see some potential for Zar'tan and Reustan to be an interesting pair.

To avoid any confusion: Kelgar and Zar'tan are both mine.

id be interested in running a cleric, any chance the subdomains of rage and ferocitya re available? Looking for a battle minded dwarf cleric

I have a dwarven battle cleric of Gorum that is hanging out, if theres a spot open.

I have a battle cleric concept I'd like to try,

1. Do you have previous pbp experience as player and/or DM? If so, on Paizo's boards, or elsewhere? Some here, thought not recently and at Myth weavers.

2. Where do you live (specifically, in what time zone)?
EST - Northeast

3. How often can you expect to post (barring illness, vacation, etc.)?
Barring major real life changes, 1-2 a day

Character Questions:

1. Who are you, and why are you in Chologadi?

Kalgar IronHand, warrior cleric of Gorum. I came here in hopes of joinign the town in it's battles against the savages of the jungle, but it seems Gorum has a tougher battle in mind for me.

2. What do you look like?
Like a dwarf ya darn lily brained welp! Long, full red beard, broad shoulders, rugedly handsome.

3. How would you describe your personality?
Friendly, energetic, honorable, though if things move to slow, i'm likely to speed them up.

4. Why will you join the expedition into the jungle, and what skills do you offer to help ensure its success? Becasue that's where the battle lies lad, and I'm not much for boats or swimming. Besides Gorum saw fit to send me here and I have faith that it's cause I'm needed. With his blessing I can create water, ward off the heat of the jungle, heal the wounded, bolster our allies, and smite those who oppose us!

Hmmm...i was thinking Magus with black blade but seeing patcher submit a magus and a dwarf one, I'm gonna go for something different. I think a fun loving halfling would be cool for this and would be fun to play along side a dwarf. The more i ponder, the more i'm thinking halfling tank - perhaps moounted. Give me some time to think and I'll have a concept ready to answer your questions.

i'd prefer jade regent, but i can go with carrion crown as well.

Jade Regent - I've got a fun loving halfling bard idea that just needs to travel...

Just relaized i forgot to include anything about how I see him growing concept wise.

Character Growth:
I see Bruaz as looking up to Shalelu and wantying to prove himself to her. He will probably make some rash decisions early on, gaining some self control and wisdom as he gaisn experience. Eventualy he hopes to be her equal in combat and skill in the wild. As for Sandru, Bruaz is pretty opposite of Sandru in style and will becoem compatitive with the rogue. This could tunr into grudging respect ebtween the two or be a point of contention witht he stubborn barbarian disagreeign opssoing him jsut for the sake of opposing him. As for Ameiko, Bruaz is smitten with her exotic beauty and hopes to prove himself worthy of her attention. This could start as showing off (dangerously at times) as he tries to impress her. In general he is young, rash, and rebelious. He htinks that he is brave, but ahs yet to learn what true bravery is. While he is of age to be a man among his people, he harbors doubts as to his right to be called such as he has never been tested. This is a secret doibt that he keeps hidden and although he will take an opportunity to prove himself a man to others, his self doubt is always present. Whent he time cones, only the gods know if he will stand up to the test. This manifests in a strong and brash warrior who is more likely to follow someone else's lead than take charge of a situation. When pressed, he will usually back the person he respects most, hiding behind their qualifications. It remains to be seen if he can grow into a confident leader. His greatest dream is to become a warrior of legend, like his grandfather was.

OK, so heres what i'm thinking.

Bruaz:
Bruaz, male human Barbarian, looking to take the Invulnerable rager Archetype. He'd be the party Tank. Tons of hit points, front line attitude, big and intimidating. (he's not just a Tank for the sake of needing one, he really is that type of person). Skill wise i'm looking at perception, survival, acrobatics, and possibly ride to start. Will spend some points in climb, knwoledge nature, and handle animal as well. In combat he'll use a greatsword or longbow and wear medium armor. Strenght and Con are his main stats with dex as his 3rd priority. Rage powers will probably include increased damage reduction, renewed vigor, and elemental rage. Traits will include improving his rage, defiently power attack, and after that undecided.

Campaign trait:Younger Sibling - Shalelu's (adopted) When Bruaz was young, his parents lef their shoanti tribe and settled in sandpoint. His parents opened a tannery / leather shop. Bruaz had a hard time adjusting and clung to the stories his grandfather had told him. He spent most days exploring ranging freeely just outside of town. Eventually he met Shalelu, the elven ranger. Bruaz's parents feared for their son, knowing he did not yet posses the skills a normal shoanti boy would need to survive, they asked Shalelu to tutor him. Shalelu took pity on Bruaz and when not busy keeping the town safe, would teach him various skills. Through her, bruaz learned how to track, hunt, and surivive in the wilds. They also practiced swordplay and archery.

Bruaz sees himself as a true Shoanti, wild, strong, and free, and rebels against his parents for forsaking their ancestors. When he learns that Shalelu is going with the caravan, he signs on, despite his parents objections. This is his chance to get out of sandpoint, roam free as he was born to be. If they happen to find a few fights along the way, he can prove his worth in combat.

I will be making a barbarian. Need to look over the players guide first and the different barbarian achetypes and such. Once i have a build, character concept and backgroudn I'll repost.

Initial thought is a man with no place to call home. Could be for any number of reasons, orphan, home destroyed, outcast, etc. Thinking he'd be a wanderer, either he gets bored and moves on or he hasn't found the right place for him.

Looking to submit a character later tonight, jsut need time to really finalize my concept before posting.

dotting for interest, not sure what id play yet

It's using all the rules for the ninja class from Ultimate Combat, by paizo. I'm just changing the fluff from oriental to more local and adding ,my own fluff on where her "KI" comes from. Definetly not looking to change any rules, just the fluff. As far as party role shes a light armored duel short sword sneak attacker, with good skill points, that can serve as a party face. The biggest thing she can't do is detect traps like a rogue can.

wareagle:
I've had this character concept of this lonely orphan raised in a monastery or temple of calistria who is taught a rarely seen style of combat and basically becomes a ninja. Her weapons are dual short swords, she is adept at deception, stealth, acrobatics, and seduction. What she doesn't know is that she is an offspring of the goddess and a mortal and her "KI" powers are actually divine powers that she can use on a limited basis.

The idea is very low oriental, just using the class as an architype of the thief class. If this doesn't work for you, then i will probably go with a female fighter "mercenary/caravan guard" No idea on style or if i'd switch to paladin, but those are my thoughts.

Working on a ninja for submission.

Thinking human female, orphan who grew up in a temple or monastary. Due to being weaker than most of her male opponents she learned early on to rely on stealth and trickery to best her opponents. She has never really fit in anywhere and so she began to wander the land, searching for something....

will flesh out details soon.

I understand, just trying to put people in 1 of the 4 classifications our Crazy DM made. Skill monkey could be possible I suppose, when you combine the 2.

I want to ask a question about Daxter whose toon is Rohan drake.

1st. What is the combined role of the summoner and Edilon?

It's one character as far as voting is concerned. At this point i'd assume you would put Melee as your primary. I saw you went low on Cha and Int, and wont be casting nearly as much, but went high on STR. Combined with an edilon ond your summons, My conclusion is melee.

As my character is melee as well, I wont be voting for another melee so If your not melee then i'lld efiently be happy to consider voting for you.

so far we have 5 melee, and 1 skill monkey, 1 arcane, and 1 heals.

If no one else posts soon it seems those 3 will determine who they want as their meat sheild.

Auk,
1/2 orc paladin of Saranrae
Need to change some things, then ill post under the allias.

I was thinking that I'd like him to have a momento of his father, who was a Knight. The sword is not only a connection to his father but is an extension of his faith and in many ways his chance at redemption. Part of his background is that he is ashamed of his beastial heritage and has turned to the gods of good, particularly Saranrae for a chance at redemption. He sees within himself, especially when he gets angry, a dark blot on his soul he assumes comes from his orc heritage. The sword would even have a name. As such I was thinking Heirloom weapon, and was curious if I would still need to spend a feat to be able to use it one handed?

Will work up a profile but, half-orc paladin using a bastard sword and shield.

dice1:

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6) + 6 = 18

dice2:

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 = 13

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6) + 6 = 18
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10

will use set one, and have something up soon.

dotting, might not get a charcter up tonight but defiently interested.

Grats all, good luck!

Currenlty playing a tiefling summoner with a biped demon eidolon and loving it. While his full attacks are nice, he's a great flanker and his perception skill is extremely handy (skilled rocks). As you level, the summoners battlefield control spells really do make a difference. Create pit matched with summoning anything that has a good cmb for bull rush really is fun, expecially if u grease the sloped edges around the pits!

Dwarven cleric of Torag with Earth and Inevitable as his domains.

Is there any backstory here we can know, a town we should be in when this starts, so that we can make a back story. Are we in desert, forest, jungle, arctic climate?

fragments to work with... witch with slumber hex and bat familiar, often treated unfairly, espicailly by nobility and hellknights, perhaps worked in a magic shop with some NPCS, one of the Npcs might have had a close encoutner with a shaodw beast and narrowly escaped.

haven't decided on race yet, not sure how well halfling would work in cheliax...... gnome is also on my radar.....

hmm.....I like your style. Thoughts are trying to penetrate my brain and if I think for a bit I might have an applicant willing to brave your first pbp DM experience.

Motteditor: still around if ya need another player, have many concepts, not heart set on anyone at this point

Would you consider a witch with the heal hex, and cure spells? A sea.witch with a familiar that either flies or can swim.

If that's not a definite no, ill stat one up and add a background. He's want the flight he'd and have ranks on fly.

Glad to see my 2 buddies gathien and kragath make it. Give em help for me lads
