Compound bows are likely a gnomish prototype. Would say for certain but they aren't steam-powered.

Still playing 1E. I've glanced at 2E and there's enough similarity between it and 1E (for me at least) that it creates cognitive dissonance. Also not particularly motivated to deep dive into it since there's a ton of 1e available.

What level is the character starting at? Assuming 1st level, and since damage isn’t a concern, go wizard (transmuter) with an arcane-bonded longsword (blade adept arcanist also looks good but i haven’t played one). Highest stat in Intelligence, next in Dex, tertiary in Con. I’d avoid armor and arcane training feats (instead rely on high dex, mage armor, shield spell). If wizard, you’ll want Craft Wondrous Item as one of your bonus feats to build protection items for yourself.

As you advance in level, you can use arcane bond to gradually boost your sword—-I can see the character starting off with a dormant moonblade that slowly awakens as they gain power. Feats will be pretty standard initially—-combat casting, item creation. toughness (only if you are starting at really low level and even then, only if you get knocked down repeatedly during fights).

Generally male with a positive charisma modifier (even if the class itself isn’t charisma-based). The character often has some innate magical capacity (e.g. drow, gnome). Usually a prepared caster (I like having options). If an arcane caster, is likely a gish (bard, eldritch knight). If the class has low skill points, the character often has a positive intelligence modifier and uses FCB for extra skills (especially at low levels). Very rarely dumps stats; if I do, I’m probably rolling up a monk or a debuffer witch. If I start lawful good, then I’ll likely slide into something more “practical” unless there’s also a code of conduct to keep me honest.

Their choices also let them devote more brain power to exploring your city. They won’t have to juggle unusual race/class combos *and* remember details about the campaign.

Disguise yourself as one of the guards; carry your weapons with you.
Sneak into the area before you actually need to be there and hide a cache of your gear.
Find a hapless guard and take his gear after you knock him out.
Send a bow and quiver of arrows as a gift for someone who will be at the place.
Be part of a hunting party that brings in food. Your bow will likely be confiscated but it will be nearby.
Sneak into the place and keep your stuff with you.

When I choose a race, there is some hook that makes the choice appealing for me (race, class, gender, culture, background, personality traits, etc), particularly when viewed against the rest of the party and the campaign world in general. For example, a human bard is pretty standard. However, a Vistani human bard in Ravenloft--that has possibilities.

How interesting any race is for me depends on how many (or how few) of my brethren there are in the world. If they are rare (like a drow on the surface), why is that? If they are widely distrusted, am I going to want to deal with that situation if I play that race? If a race is rare simply because they are not native to the region, will the appeal of being different be enough to hold my interest? It all depends on what else is happening.

Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight or Magus. Pure casters are fun but sometimes you just want to smack something with a sword (and possibly a fireball).

I prefer to embrace the situation. I played an eldritch knight that arcane-bonded his longsword. It was his primary weapon and he used Hand of the Apprentice to throw it every chance he got. Of course it was stolen. But our GM made recovering it a cool side adventure.

Lightning reflexes and combat reflexes on a rogue. Didn't know about attacks of opportunity so never took one. I always imagined the character as very twitchy.

Our group raided a castle inhabited by undead and a guards and wards spell. The spell's fog made it difficult to move and fight so we had to withdraw. We went back the next day and our wizard dispelled the fog with a lucky roll. Fights go much better when you can see most of your foes.

This is the real reason wizards don't wear armor. Too much luggage.

Summon Monster V is nice. Get a large elemental or 2 - 5 lantern archons. Only downsides are the full round casting time and the extra bookkeeping.

Another possibility is leaving the spell slot open and, if he has time, preparing an appropriate spell when he needs (like wall of stone if the group comes across some interesting ruins).

Some of my favorite core spells. I tried to avoid spells that are good but ubiquitous (Greater Dispel, Heal, True Seeing).

Couple of favorites from the Gargoyles cartoon. The first makes a good Stone to Flesh spell. The second is a beautiful Geas.

If you're staying single class wizard, pick up Craft Magic Arms and Armor for your armor.

Endurance feat. Sleep in up to medium armor.

Elven chain (20% ASF) or mithral breastplate (25% ASF). Not sure if there are other materials or items that offset ASF (especially if you are going to wear heavy armor).

If you ever expect to wield a weapon, pick up the Arcane Strike feat.

If you can afford to multiclass, take a level of fighter and then Eldritch Knight prestige class. Offset the lost caster levels with the Magical Knack trait.

In my mind, "lawful good sociopath" made me think of Ozymandias from the Watchmen series. He works for the greater good but in the end has no real attachments to his teammates.

Random thoughts:

I'm loving the potential NPC interactions. Pleeease tell me your character is the party face. ; )

Wait, the cat's a cleric?! Which deity? The (presumably) first cat cleric of ______. That's got to be worth some kind of boon.

We should probably compile a list of pros and cons to help our cat make his way in the world.

Pro: Bartender will never ask him to pay a tab.
Con: Bartender may choose not to serve him because he looks underage.

Heal skill. Treat deadly wounds 1/day. Need someone else to do it for you.

Monk's wholeness of body class skill . . .which is only kind of magical . . .

Ring of regeneration. . . Is it just spells, or items in general that your PC dislikes?

You could have your shopkeeper describe +1 weapons as "mage-wrought steel." A +2 weapon could be "Valerian steel---you can see by the way light plays along the blade---only noticeable to someone skilled in spellcraft. A +1 frost sword might be described as "mage-wrought steel but look, the metal is marked by a bleak rune. Feel how cold the blade is." +3 could be "elysian steel---its metal is bane to fae, demons (cold iron-equivalent), devils, and werefolk; and so forth.

I've played one prestige class, an eldritch knight. My DM turn them into an order of arcane paladins (for lack of a better word). The class had a code of conduct, and gaining entry also required having my party and some NPCs serve as character witnesses, while the ceremony was solemn and felt sacred. It really made the wait to get into the prestige class a major milestone in my character's career.

Cayden Cailean. Someone once described him as a less-broody Malcolm Reynolds. Once I read that, it all made sense. Also, his priests wear brown robes and tunics. Can you say browncoats?

Heh. I called the monk I built for Build Thread 3 "Wingman". My thought behind it was monks can accompany rangers and rogues when they scout (high perception and stealth). They can ostensibly be flanking buddies for fighters and barbarians (and rogues) using their enhanced mobility (high speed, high Acrobatics) to get into position quickly.

At 11th level, the monk's immunity to poison makes him an indispensible wingman when heading to bars.

I like unique items but I also like seeing the big numbers on my character sheet. Sure the +3 cloak looks a bit generic but when it pushes all of my saving throws into double digits, I smile.
