I'm putting together a "raid-boss" style villain for a one shot, and am curious what some of the more...aggressive spells would be to outfit this character with? He's a- *deep breath*

Human half-dragon vampire 20th level Cleric, with the Death domain, and a custom fear domain I found on the 3.5 wiki: https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Fear_(3.5e_Cleric_Domain)

Currently, I have his lair set up with a permanent desecration effect, and a zone of dispelling magic that specifically is designed to dispel any attempt at casting time based spells such as haste, time stop, temporal stasis, safety spells such as sanctuary, contingency, shield of faith, any sort of warp spells such as blink, teleport, dimensional door, etc., and either wish or miracle spells. He also has pre-summoned creatures from summon monster 6, 7, and 8 (1 per spell).

He has max gear for his mental stats (+6 to all 3), and a belt of same properties for his physical stats, as well as a cloak of resistance +5.

Right now I'm looking for spells to make him a nightmare. His title is "Lord of Fear", so I feel like the harder this encounter gets, the better. Anything PF official is acceptable, and since I'm also working with a homebrew 3.5 domain, if there are any 3.5 spells that PF doesnt have from official sources, those will work too.

So obviously this is an odd question. There are homebrew forums everywhere (this one included) that support creating your own feats, spells, worlds, races, and classes etc. But it seems like for every place you find that supports homebrew, there are camps that oppose it vehemently. You'll find people that love the idea of homebrew, then you'll find people that seem to think that if it's not a piece of officially released material, it's garbage. Or there are the moderates. Groups that find playing in homebrew settings amazing, but find the idea of homebrew races or classes despicable. Can't find something that fits your idea for a character or preference? Make it yourself. But then if you submit it to somebody else for review it may be taken as a waste of time, or useless. I think with pathfinder it's a bit more prevalent since everything is OGL content, and so is basically freely available on the SRD.

This also comes into question with things such as published adventures, or Adventure Paths, and PFS play. If paizo is running a sanctioned play event with PFS, why should anybody care about homebrew ideas? They'll never be allowed within events like this (as far as I'm aware). I'm not knocking PFS either, I think it's great. For a lot of people, that's probably the only way they can play. But then doesn't that crowd lose something from Tabletop RPG's that's supposed to be there? Isn't there supposed to be an element of creativity among not just the GM, but the players too?

And you can tell all the cool stories about homebrew adventures that you want. But telling somebody "My group played with a Witcher class, and a Dragon Knight, and we put together a class to mirror a Warlock from 3.5, and a Necromonger from Riddick." Then if nobody else can experience them or find information on those classes, the enjoyment isn't there for them. I've always felt like letting my players work from third party sources, or homebrew ideas (with approval of course) was a treat for them. But does anybody else think that homebrewing is generally frowned upon by a large part of the gaming community?

Hello everybody! Take a bit to get settled in, get any questions for your characters set up and answered, be social and we'll get started within a couple days!

Yeah, we'll probably finish the AP before GRRM finishes his damn book too. So we're going to be starting at level 1, with a 20 point buy. No stat below 7, and no stat above 16 before mods. This will be a gestalt game, and I'll be using Automatic Bonus Progression. I'm looking for good characters with excellent backstory, as well as an interesting concept. The recruitment will be for 4 players, and I'll let recruitment go until Saturday March 19th. Resources allowed are Core, ACG, ARG, Ultimate Magic, Ultimate Combat, Occult Adventures, and APG. Good luck and happy crafting!

Ninja Edit: I'm also looking for posts once a day at least, just to help the story progress. If people need a day or so to work around school or work or real life that's fine, just keep in touch with the discussion thread is all I ask.

So I'm interested in playing/running one of the AP's. Currently running through the idea of Rise of the Runelords, Kingmaker, Reign of Winter, or Wrath of the Righteous. I would love to throw in Iron Gods, but I don't have that AP (super sad face/I love sci-fi). But I'll be looking for around 4 people to run one of the the four AP's. Dot here if you're interested, and the AP with the most votes will (if there's enough interest) get a recruitment thread started. I'll leave the interest thread up through saturday, and on then I'll start a recruitment thread. Also, if we get a tie, or a win by 1-2 votes, I'll consider running two different games. So leave your interest dots here with which AP you'd like the best, and we'll see if this takes off.

The air hangs heavy in the fields of Thale where you had been summoned. Rolling hills and green grass fills your vision as far as the horizon in every direction. Thale has always been a calm land, as long as memory serves. Yet in recent years, travelers have taken more to the vast wilderness and hills that it promises. The cities were wondrous marvels to behold, for sure, but they were for a certain kind of people. A land so far untouched by modern machine and magic was a rare sight, and welcome for many. That was until the armies started marching.

These armies and their camps were now dotting the landscape, the camp you are walking through being only one of many. Heat was beating down, and flies were buzzing by the horses and stables. The Iron Lands, and Iron woods, Kal'Dorem, the marshes from north, and more. All of them congregated into one place.

The tent in the center of the camp was a large Red and gold housing, surrounded by banners of many people. Two guards exited the tent as you enter. In the tent stood a man clad in cumbersome Exo-Armor, a lightweight but resiliant metal, woven in bands and cylindrical chambers around his body and limbs. He was standing over a desk, staring at a map. The hologram projecting from a flat crystal on a round stand. With his hands, he would move the map, pinching and pulling to zoom in or out as needed, or rotating to try and see beyond the furthest mountains. With a sigh, he moved his hand in a waving motion, and the hologram dispersed. He looked up at all of you.

"It's almost as bad as I'd feared. The far Blackrock mountains are seething with corruption, and beyond Fissures' End even the elves prepare for war. As much as they would wish to stay out of our affairs, now they see the plight we face."

The man approached you one by one, stretching out his hand to shake all of yours in turn. General Virgil Stanze as he was known. Commander of the steam legion from the far southern Balteria. The city-nation known far and wide for their magic powered machinery. Flying vehicles, laser weapons, floating fortresses and seas over their skies.

"I trust you all had a safe journey?" he said with a smile.

This'll kind of be the lounge area. I like to keep my games fun, so if you have any questions just ask. Although if I'm away for a bit (common because I work 3rds and sleep odd hours) feel free to offer assistance to your peers for their questions. I can hammer out any fine details after.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

This is the official recruitment thread for a homebrew campaign involving the mass combat rules from Ultimate Campaign. The campaign is starting at 12th level, and will go to 16th level at least, possibly more if players are interested in going to 20th or mythic. You will play a leader in charge of an army (or multiple armies due to the sizes of the groups in mass combat rules). The land we're starting in is called Avithale (homebrew place), surrounded by deserts to the north, mountains to the south, and forests, swamps, plains, and badlands to the east and west. You'll be representing an area of the surrounding lands, as the desert to the north had been pushed past by an Evil necromantic cleric from the far frozen north.

Marcaus Thornblood holds a frozen fortress in the Helfrost, where sick and twisted necromantic practices take hold. Undead, and sick abominations roam the frozen wastes. But recently, his minions have been spotted moving south (towards the mainlands) through the Navaru desert. He too, commands vast armies, who themselves are overseen by his high commanders and warlords:

Ezriel, the Lord of Fear
Malek Thrun, Hand of the Trickster God
Seifer Caldrim, the Quaking Giant
Ahn'Zukal, King of Eight

These names are well known by the soverign rulers in the rest of the mainlands, and they have amassed their armies in the hopes of driving back these forces.

RULES FOR CHARACTER SUBMISSIONS:

-25 point buy
-Starting at 12th level
-Guns Everywhere ruling
-WBL+50% for starting gold
-Magic Items to start are capped at +3, with bonus abilities that add up to a total of +5, (so one +2 ability, or two +1's). Otherwise, you are allowed 2 stat increasing items with max bonus of +4 to one score each, and 1 Armor increasing item capped at +4.
-Third party classes and races available, as well as custom races capped at 16 RP, also CR cap of +3 for races

Below are four custom races I've created for this homebrew setting, I've been working on it for almost a year, but these races are just clippings of the full entries with just a brief description, and crunch.

Nordrim:
The Nordrim are a hardy nomadic race known to travel the world in order to see and learn of the lands beyond their homes. They venture out to bring back stories to their tribes, and honor to their clan names. Existing primarily in forests and wooded lands, these people dedicate their honor to protect and maintain the world around them.

Stats: +2 Con, +2 Wis, -2Cha

Medium Size

Stability
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race receive a +4 racial bonus to their CMD when resisting bull rush or trip attempts while standing on the ground.

Hardy
Prerequisites: The race has at least a +2 racial bonus to Constitution.
Benefit: Members of this race gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.

Fearless
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race gain a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against fear effects.
Special: This bonus stacks with the bonus granted by the lucky (greater or lesser) racial trait.

Low-Light and Darkvision

Nordrim Magic: As spell-like ability, the nordrim can use the following spells, once per day each: Speak with Animals, Tripvine, Read Weather

Arcane Sentinel:
Arcane Sentinels are constructs of wizards and sorcerers, bred for protection and security through civilized lands, and honorable nobles. These constructs exist as pieces of obsidian stone, held together through arcane energy, which forms arms, legs, hands and feet. They are faceless, but can communicate through a disembodied voice, that echoes forth from the stone representing the head.

Stats: As construct, no Con score, treat it as 10 for any Con based checks. Immune to Fort saves, 20 bonus hitpoints.

Does not require food, sleep or rest.

Can only be healed by arcane spells, or arcane energy. Can do this by expending 1 spell of their highest level (works as clerics channel energy) and convert into healing. Or can absorb other spells, and convert them to arcane energy as a full round action.

Casts spells as +1 to caster level. This does not give access to more spell levels, or slots.

Shadeling:
These little shadows live primarily in marshes, or blighted lands. Standing just over 4 feet tall normally, these Fey enjoy playing tricks on others, and unsuspecting guests. They enjoy learning about the cultures of others, and are intruiged by more modern creations. They are quick to laugh, and can be foolhardy.

Stats: +2 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Wis

Small

Low-light and Darkvision

Spell Like ability: Blur 1/day

Light Sensitivity
Prerequisites: Darkvision.
Weakness: Members of this race are dazzled as long as they remain in an area of bright light.

Stalker
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Perception and Stealth are always class skills for members of this race.

Sneaky
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race gain a +4 racial bonus on Stealth checks.

Nephilim:
The Nephilim are a race of creatures, formed before the mortals walked the land. Trapped in stasis in a bleak and every stretching void, these creatures have little to no memory of existence before the rule of the mortals. When the door to their prison was ripped open, they were thrust upon the land of Avithale, and seen as near Gods.

Stats: +2 Str, +2 Dex, +2 Con, +4 Int, -2 Cha

Natural Armor +4

Damage Reduction
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race gain DR 5/magic.
Special: This can be increased to DR 10/magic for an additional 2 RP. The type of DR can be changed to one of the alignments (chaos, evil, good, or law) if the race is of the outsider (native) type with ties to the appropriate plane (chaos for a race with ties to a lawful-aligned plane, evil for a race with ties to a good-aligned plane, etc.) for an additional 2 RP.

Fast Healing
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race regain 1 hit point each round. Except for where noted here, fast healing is just like natural healing. Fast healing does not restore hit points lost from starvation, thirst, or suffocation, nor does it allow a creature to regrow lost body parts. Fast healing continues to function (even at negative hit points) until a member of this race dies, at which point the effects of fast healing immediately end.

Resurrection Vulnerability
Weakness: A raise dead spell cast on a member of this race can destroy it (Will negates). Using the spell in this way does not require a material component.

Unsustainable
Weakness: This race cannot gain benefit from eating, drinking, resting, healing spells, or potions. This can cause fast healing to heal them out of combat completely in 1d4 hours.

I look forward to all submissions. Recruitment will go until Tuesday, Feb 3rd, 4pm EST.

So I've been pouring over my copy of Ultimate Campaign, and I really like the warfare rules. I'm interested to know how many people would be interested in leading an army. It won't be a straight up army vs army game though. You would get to play PC's as well. The basic jist is something like the big wars from the LOTR/Hobbit films. You can offer instructions to your army, fortifications, go on recon missions, recruitment, or even run into the thick of combat with your soldiers.

I this sounds like something you'd be interested in, I would have pc's do a 25 pt buy, with access to 4 custom races I've made, along with other player races, and starting level would be 12th. Max magic item bonus would be +3 with extra abilities totaling a +5. Don't worry about cheese level, this is meant to be high power, and epic scale.

Go ahead and dot if this is up your alley!

Hi all, I'm writing out a PF campaign setting, and one of the features is a very powerful necromantic force with a base of operations, army of undead, and constant raids. One of the bosses is a human base, half-dragon Vampire Cleric of Urgathoa 12, Lifedrinker 5 (from book of vile darkness). My question is what are some things I can do to up his badass factor? He already has 17d6 cone of cold breath weapon, all the vampire fixings, plus boost defenses (increases dr to 20/magic or silver) can empower spells without increased slots, and commands undead as well as the death domain skills and perks. He has a level 12 vampire fighter and level 12 vampire sorceress as his companions. +4 unholy scythe, a strength score of 28 and wisdom of 26. About what CR is this? I'm trying to plot out important NPC and bbeg is why I ask. Thanks in advance!

As dusk sets in, the trade city of Eastwall is experiencing its evening rush. Carriages and horses flood the streets as businesses take their last customers for the day. Taverns are filling and children are laughing as they run home for dinner. Despite the evening rush, there is no hostility in the crowds. Instead, shop owners are working harder to finish their orders at a fast pace.

Near the gate however, a crowd is starting to gather. The murmurs grow louder as more people pour in, and before long you hear shouting. "Help! Somebody help us! A young boy and his father are carrying a large blanket into town. It's hard to see what's inside, but it looks like it's wrapped around a person. They make it past the initial crowd, close to the town fountain and set their load down. "We need help!" they shout. People are standing away from the two, and from the crowd comes a confused "What is it?

Ok. This is the official discussion thread for the Campaign. Any OOC questions should go in here just to try to keep the board as clean as possible. If you have any suggestions for the campain, GM tools to advise, etc post them here. I don't have a map for the campaign, I was thinking of Roll20, but still looking that over.

This campaign setting is still a work in progress, so if you have suggestions to ease up creation of the world for me, by all means let me know. Or suggestions for additions or such.

With the smell of fine ale, and the sound of laughter in the air, you sit at the bar drinking a mug of the owners finest. The dusty old tavern reminds you of home, and although everybody seems to be having a good time, from across the room you notice a hooded man sitting by the fire. "Who is that man?" you ask the barkeep. "Oh, him? He's here every now and then." The barkeep polishes more mugs, wiping in tune with the dwarven dance song. "He's often quiet, but if you've got coin to spare, he's more than a tale or two to share." Slowly, you make a wobbly walk over to a chair by the fireplace. After placing a few silver pieces in the mans donation box, he stirs from his silent stature.

"Take a look into the fire lad. Let the embers take you back. To a time when fear held the land hostage, and deaths hold was all but certain. I'll tell you of the brave ones, who sought to bring peace to the land." He leans back in his chair and reaches into his cloak. He pulls out a pipe and tobacco, lighting his herb to begin his story.

Hello everybody. Welcome to the recruitment thread for a slow homebrew campaign "For Love of Evil". I'm a new GM (I've gm'd one game before, and felt I didn't do too great, so I'm looking to get better, and give people a fun experience in the process). I'll post a brief overview of the rules, and guidelines for submissions.

-I'll be recruiting 5-6 individuals. This is going to be a slow campaign, but if you can post at least once per day, that's all I require. More is certainly welcome, but I work 3rd shift, so time I can dedicate to the boards will be less than most GM's.

-Recruitment will go until Saturday January 12, 2013 at 11:59 pm EST. If I'm late shutting down the recruitment thread, then I will be fair and allow submissions that are posted before the shutdown post.

-Characters will be on a 25 Point buy

-Races: All races from core rulebook, or advanced players guide allowed (with PSRD link). If you have a custom race you'd like to play, let me know. I worked with a GM to create an Elvish Dhampir, so if you keep it within the 10 RP standard limit, PM to me and I'll most likely ok it.

-Classes: I'd like to let any class available, as long as you can provide a link to the class description. Multi-classing is fine, but no 3rd party material.

-Alignment: Any good or neutral alignment. As much as I'd love to have Evil PC's, you're going to be the hero's in this campaign (who knew!).

-Players will start at level 5, and have standard wealth for that level. You will be allowed a single +1 weapon that is not included in equipment purchasing cost. And as far as hitpoints go, you will take full hit points for level 1, then roll the additional levels and include if you took Bonus HP for favored class or an extra skill point instead.

You will be doing a lot of role-play, as well as battle. So when you post, be sure to include the crunch, as well as a marvelous and intriguing backstory. Good luck to all participants, and I look forward to reading your submissions.

Hi everybody. I've been playing 3.5 D&D for some years now, and I've been interested in Pathfinder for a while now. I've been reading the SRD a bit, learning about the game, and I think I want to start playing. Problem is I work thirds, and don't have a whole lot of time to game. Is there some place I can do a play by post deal? I'm very new to Pathfinder (Just ordered core rulebook from Books-A-Million), so something a little slower, with a decent bit of combat, and role-play interaction. Thanks to all who can help, happy gaming! Oh yea, and Happy New Year I guess :P
